MP Gord Brown announces $77,000 of funding for Limerick Forest Jennifer Westendorp jwestendorp@perfprint.ca

Limerick Forest has received roughly $77,000 of funding from the National Trails Coalition. The announcement was made by Leeds Grenville MP Gord Brown, during a press conference held at the Limerick Forest Interpretive Centre on March 6. “Our government recognizes the importance of multi-purpose recreation spaces and wants to ensure we invest to expand those we can and restore those that need it, Brown commented. The Limerick Forest, in partnership with the Bytown Motorcycle Association, successfully applied for funding for two projects from the NTC. The first application, submitted in the fall of 2014, was for the trail network rehabilitation, upgrading and signage, in the amount of $42,000. The second application, submitted at the end of January, was for the Limerick Forest trail network connection, in the amount of $35,000. “There is a lot of work we can do here with this funding, said Forest Manager Geoff McVey. “The trails are used more and require more maintenance. We are going to rehabilitate old trail

systems that are rutted and connect two of our trails, to make them safer for users. Currently, recreational vehicles have to drive down a section of road to get to the other trail system, which they legally can’t do. We are also going to use the funding to put up new signage and add and expand some parking lots for trail users. Brown explained the government wants to help construct new, and renew existing, trail infrastructure for all uses, including hiking, cycling, horseback riding, ATV’s, cross-country and snowmobiling, to name a few. “We are committed to providing funding for national recreation trails in the 2014 budget, and once again, we have delivered, said Brown. “The Government of Canada’s partnership with the National Trails Coalition will help expand and rehabilitate Canada’s snowmobile, all-terrain vehicle and nonmotorized trail system thanks to the $10 million in federal funding that will flow over the next two fiscal years. He explained between 150 and 200 projects are expected across Canada. “I am pleased that we are supporting the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville in

By supporting projects like this, our

government is demonstrating its commitment to the health and well-being of Canadians. He explained a strong recreational trail network helps ensure the UCLG can offer quality fitness and recreational opportunities, not only to local residents, but also tourists who wish

to enjoy nature at its finest. “The United Counties will receive two grants from the federal government under this program, said Brown. “The first is $21,000 for repairs, maintenance and signage on Limerick Forest Trails. The second is $17,188 for a network trail con-

nection project. Partnered with the United Counties and the Bytown Motorcycle Association, the funds will double, meaning a total of nearly $77,000 to be spent on trails this year. Chris Davis, President of the Bytown Motorcycle Association, said he was very happy about the funding announcement. “Our club has about 200 members who enjoy using the trails at Limerick Forest, said Davis. “This funding is going towards making that experience safer and more enjoyable. The jewel and crown is everyone works so well together, for the betterment of the trail system. Thanks to Geoff and his team for their top notch application to the National Trails Coalition. David Nash, Merrickville-Wolford Mayor, said the trail system benefits the health of all residents. “This is one of the best trail systems in Eastern Ontario, if not all of Ontario, said Nash. “Thank you Mr. Brown for this funding announcement. Members of the county council, forestry staff, volunteers from the Friends of Limerick Forest and the Bytown Motorcycle Association attended the conference.
