Merrickville Legion receives federal accessibility grant for lift Jennifer Westendorp jwestendorp@perfprint.ca

Barrier free access to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 245 Merrickville is now possible. Member of Parliament for Leeds Grenville, Gord Brown, presented a cheque for $19,134 to Legion President Randy Stowell on Feb. 12. “Our first priority is to create barrier free access to this building,” said Stowell. “Without funding from the federal government, we wouldn’t be able to do this project. It is a simple project that is vitally important.” The grant money, which is from the Enabling Accessibility Fund, is for a wheelchair ramp lift, which will be installed on the side door of the Legion. The way it works is a person in a wheelchair or someone who finds stairs difficult to manage can go onto the platform and press a button to access the Legion on their own, without assistance. “It will allow everyone to enter this building on their own and with dignity,” said Stowell. The cost for the installation of the commercial lift, which will be done by Upper Canada Elevators, will be $19,838. The lift travels on a rail system mounted to the wall or to towers

mounted on the landings. The cost for opening the wall and installing support backing for the lift is estimated to cost $4,600. The creation of the exterior landing that allows wheelchair access and adding a door operator to the external door is estimated to cost $5,000. The total estimated cost of the project is $29,438. “This is the second accessibility grant the Legion has received from the federal government,” said Stowell. “The first one was a $38,000 grant we received in 2012, to put in a lift. The lift was completed in March 2013 and we are using it. It has allowed people with mobility issues to enter this building. However, right now we have to carry the wheelchairs up the stairs. With this grant money and the wheelchair ramp lift, it will give people complete freedom and access to this building.” Brown said it was his honour to present the funds, on behalf of the Minister of State for Social Development, Candice Bergen. “In communities across Canada, organizations like yours are making a real difference in helping improve the lives of Canadians,” said Brown. “I’m here today to talk about accessibility, something that most of us hardly notice and often take for granted.

Getting around by car or public transit, entering a building, going up and down the stairs…these are things most of us do without even thinking.” He explained for millions of Canadians, accessibility is an important issue, because it can mean the difference between getting a job or not, being independent or not and feeling included or not. “Over the years, we have seen a real change in attitudes,” said Brown. “Handrails, wheelchair ramps, kneeling buses, elevators and visual fire alarm systems are making life easier for Canadians with disabilities. We should be proud of that, but there are still barriers to overcome.” He explained the federal government has taken unprecedented actions to improve accessibility for all Canadians. “And with ongoing partnerships like the one we have with your organization, we’ll continue to improve the quality of life for Canadians of all abilities,” said Brown. “I wish you many years of success and thank all the people here in the Legion who helped make this happen. Thanks to your work, we’re eliminating barriers and we’re helping to bring workers, employers and communities together.”

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 245 Merrickville received a $19,134 federal grant for accessibility. A ceremony was held, with an official cheque presentation, on Feb. 12. From left, Merrickville Mayor David Nash, Zone Commander Anne Dutcher, MP Gord Brown, Legion President Randy Stowell, Treasurer Ken Richardson and Sergeant at Arms Gord Headley. Since the launch of the Enabling Accessibility Fund in 2007, the federal government has funded over 1,800 projects, helping thousands of Canadians gain better access to their communities’ facilities, programs and

services. The Legion hosts a dinner and dance every Friday night, which costs $20. Also, every third Thursday of the month, the Legion hosts a free seniors lunch, with entertainment

by a swing bridge band. Lunch is free to everyone over the age of 55 and consists of soup and sandwiches. Stop by the Legion, at 229 Main Street West in Merrickville, for more information.
