positive impact on the more than 1,500 people who live with MS in our community.” This year is the 21st annual event, and organizers are preparing for their largest crowd – 650 cyclists and more than 70 teams are expected to participate in the event. The routes for the tour range from 65 km to 185 km, and there are five rest stops for participants. One of those will be at the University of Guelph Kemptville Campus, where cyclists can reserve in advance indoor accommodations or have the option of camping on the campus grounds. Hundreds of cyclists will be riding their bikes from Ottawa to Kemptville – and it’s all for a good cause. On Aug. 7 and 8, the Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Rona MS Bike Tour will be taking place and there’s still a call for volunteers. Organizers hope to raise half a million dollars in support of research, and local programs and services. “For many of the cyclists, there is a personal connection with MS. I originally got involved in riding with the Tour because of my wife, who lives with MS,” said Dick Louch, RONA MS Bike Tour committee chair. “But the tour is also great fun. It’s a terrific event for cyclists with a guaranteed fun-filled weekend that will have a
fire, dance and prize giveaways. There will also be a new tradeshow tent for the outdoor enthusiast and medievalthemes demonstrations featuring archery and armored knights. According to the MS Society of Canada, multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord. It is the most common neurological disease of young adults in Canada. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 40, and the unpredictable effects of MS last for the rest of their lives..
