Vera Mitchell and Dwayne Acres were recently inducted into the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame in Milton for their decades of hard work in the agriculture industry. Osgoode Ward hosted a family barbecue recently to honour the two area farm owners who are also the first in the area to be recognized provincially. The event also served a dual purpose – proceeds went to the Close to Home Campaign raising funds for the Winchester District Memorial Hospital. More than 200 people came to event which was held at the Metcalfe Fairgrounds, Agricultural Hall. “It was extremely flattering,” said Mitchell. “I wasn’t expecting it.” Mitchell has impressive accomplishments both in the field of agriculture and her years as key owner/operator of Donevelyn Farms Limited since 1952. Her farm is made up of 1,000 acres and has four separate enterprises – dairy, a grain elevator,

cash crops and custom cropping services. She has also become a well-known spokesperson across Ontario, speaking to the press as someone with considerable knowledge of the dairy industry and Ontario agriculture. The now 81-year old is a defender of farm practices and has emphasized that farmers are excellent custodians of land. In addition to being on the Advisory Board of Kemptville Campus, she was appointed by the minister of agriculture as a founding director on the Ontario Farm Debt Review Board. Mitchell was also awarded the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Medal for Outstanding Citizenship, Business Leadership and Contributions to Agriculture. Her induction into the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame was sponsored by Garnet Ralph and William Tupper. Mitchell was humble about her achievements. “That was a real experience getting inducted into the hall of fame,” she said. Farmers see page 3

Gilles Roger knows firsthand what military families go through when their loved one is away. That’s why the Metcalfe musician- who’s also an RCMP officer and former military official himself – is determined to raise $1 million for the Military Family Resource Centre. The centre supports the families of soldiers in times of crisis and in their day to day lives. “These are people having a hell of a time getting the government to cover their family’s expenses,” said Roger. “Not to mention worrying about being killed that day.” Roger recently wrote his song called Half Mast Again as part of the fundraising campaign where he is donating 100 per cent of his song sales to the resource centre. In addition to the song, Roger is also writing a script for a video and intends on taking his campaign on the road by playing in as many community events as he can. “Eventually as the song gets produced, the video will come out as well as a documentary,”

he explained. The documentary and video will show the production of the song as well as have interviews with military officials in Petawawa who will talk about the daily lives of soliders and their families. The video will also follow Roger through his experience as he tries to raise $1 million for military families. “I want people to see that and experience it through my eyes,” said Roger. He will be paying for any additional costs out of his own pocket - including hiring producers and directors for the films. Roger will also produce a special edition CD of his single. “I don’t want people to just have a CD. I want them to have additional value as well,” said Roger. “And it’s for charity and it’s for a good cause. I believe in getting something for what you give.” Roger got the idea for the fundraising campaign when he was performing at a military Courtesy photo friend’s wedding on Canada Day Gilles Roger of Metcalfe plays at a recent performance in Trenton. to help benefit the Military Family Resource Centre When he and another musiwhich helps families of soldiers in their day to day cian started talking, the musilives. cian mentioned seeing a flag at half-mast the day before at a military base. “It struck a note with me,” he said. “The next day [when I went to write it], it just came out of me.” Roger has been busy making appearances on radio stations and through other media outlets across the community, and said every step he takes will hopefully help the cause. He hopes that with every appearance and sale, the fundraising campaign will just get bigger. “These soldiers and their families serve us. They don’t ask why, they don’t include politics, they just go and do their job,” said Roger. “When soldiers get hurt, they have to cope with that the rest of their lives or when they die, there’s no mommy or daddy for their little kids.” He added that his fundraising campaign is a way of saying thank you to the brave men and women serving this country. “This particular project gives me a sense of giving back to people who are already giving so much to us,” he said. If anyone is interested in helping Roger or would like to know more about his project, visit his website at: www.gillesroger.ca. His website includes blogs and upcoming events of where he will be performing. Roger is also on Facebook and can be contacted by email at GillesRoger1@mac.com

Grit bus brings back politics

Room to Read sends thanks

Whether you’re a Conservative, Liberal, New Democrat or Green supporter, you can’t blame the Grits for bringing politics back to where it belongs – the coffee houses, the farms, the community centres. Someone once broke down politics like this – “It is derived from the word ‘poly’, meaning ‘many’, and the word ‘ticks’, meaning ‘blood-sucking parasites.’” Geez - good thing politicians have thick skin. But in all seriousness, when you shave down all of the meanings of the word “politics,” the bare bones of it all comes back to relating to citizens. At the beginning of Canada’s young life, politics was practiced in the local bars and on the streets. But now, it seems you have to have a university degree to do politics – and you have to have a university degree to understand politics. It’s not that people are getting dumber. People are just as intelligent as they’ve always been. But like everything, politics has evolved and now all of a sudden Canadian politicians have also fallen into the trap of practicing politics behind closed doors. The breakdown of the Liberal Express on its second day didn’t symbolize a breakdown of the Liberal Party – it symbolized the breakdown of the current way politics was being done by every party. And despite the setback, everyone on the bus – including Ignatieff - kept their chins up and the Liberal Express is bringing politics back on the road to the communities and to the people. Love him or hate him, at least Ignatieff ’s head is in the right place. It’s not science that people like leaders they can relate to – Barack Obama also used this charm and down-to-earth quality in his campaign and it landed him in the most powerful position in the world. Ignatieff ’s attempt at bringing politics back to the people might not earn him any votes. His popularity throughout this two-month journey might not soar like it did for Obama. But maybe this is the first step in getting other parties out of Ottawa and into areas where there’s real people asking real questions.

The true meaning of holidays The Civic Holiday - which was celebrated just this past weekend offers a fantastic break in the middle of summer. It’s hot, sunny and people are ready to get out and enjoy the peak of the season. Much like Family Day and Labour Day, it’s a holiday where people get a day off at the perfect time. These holidays usually come after long hulls of stressful times - whether it’s home life, or there haven’t been any holidays from work in a while. While people might wonder what is celebrated on Civic Holiday, Family Day or Labour Day, the answer seems simple to me - sometimes, people need to be cut a break, and these holidays are there to relieve us of stress. And in particular, they’re there to remind us of the importance of work-life balance. The work-life balance is getting to be difficult these days. With BlackBerrys and work email accessible from home, a lot of people are finding themselves with no clear balance of their personal life and work life.

KRISTY WALLACE It used to be that people left their office, and everything associated with work at the office and came home to enjoy their personal life. But BlackBerrys, as well as other technologies, have come along and brought us back to a similar place that was before the labour movement - except now it’s different. Instead of working on a railroad or a mine for 16 hours a day, people today are blending work and family - which in the end is unhealthy for either aspects of life. It’s kind of like that episode of Seinfeld where George Costanza’s “relationship” life mixes in with his “independent” life when his friends and girlfriend start hanging out together. We all laugh when George exclaims “A George divided against itself cannot stand!”

But really, it’s a funny and clever observation. Blending the work/home lives just doesn’t work emotionally, mentally and physically. When you’re stressed out at work, you bring those emotions home - along with the BlackBerry and constantly checking work email - this leads to an unhappy home life and arguments ensue. And the cycle begins. To me, holidays like the Civic Holiday that was just this past weekend breaks that cycle. The holiday reminds us that it’s okay to have break. And, that it’s okay to be given a break once in a while. The festivals that are offered around the area during this time are also incredible in reminding people of the importance of family time. Canalfest, which took place in Merrickville over the long weekend, gave people the opportunity to get out of the house, get away from their work and enjoy time with family and friends. And that’s what the Civic Holiday - and others like it - are all about.

Come join the Inaugural “Milk & Mallets” Festival. This first time festival comes to Winchester during Dairyfest weekend Aug. 6 to 8. The festival consists of more than 19 stone carvers from as far as St. Catharines to participate in this two-day event, which has been popular for years in Europe. There is a wide variety of entrants registered for this year’s event, ranging from hobbyists to professionals. Some carvers are currently working at Parliament Hill performing carving restoration work on the West block. The festival starts on Saturday, Aug. 7 at 7 a.m. where the carvers receive an Indiana limestone piece with dimensions up to 14” by 12” by 9” and carve their choice of finished product. This will be a true carving event as only hand tools are to be used. The public is invited to watch free of charge as these talented craftsmen transform a block of stone to a piece of art. The art work will be turned over to the Winchester Park committee, where-

by the pieces will be auctioned off at 5 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 8 at the Lions pavilion with proceeds going towards the new “Sweet Corner Park” in Winchester. The location of this year’s festival will be at the “Sweet Corner Park” in downtown Winchester on Saturday Aug. 7 and on Sunday Aug. 8 it will be relocated down the street to the community arena. Co-organizer Dan Barber has taken part in numerous festivals in Europe and has commented that he believes this is a first of its kind in North America. This festival is also about a bond that exists within the sculpting community and also the camaraderie that is formed when fellow carvers get together and share their carving experiences with each other. Two frenzied days “On the bus with Michael Ignatieff MARJORY LOVEYS Special to the Advance

What was it like to ride the Liberal Express with Federal Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff ? It was a swinging pendulum. We went from calm-and-orderly to energy-and-bustle and back again to calm numerous times as we went to events in Brockville, Kingston, Napanee, Peterborough, Cobourg, Markham and Ajax - all in two days. Once settled on the bus, all was calm-and-orderly. The logistics crew took roll calls to ensure that no one was left behind. People settled in. Before each stop MPs and candidates briefed Mr. Ignatieff on local issues. I had the opportunity to spend an hour between Cornwall and Brockville discussing the concerns of LeedsGrenville. Mr. Ignatieff was keenly interested in the need for jobs in the cities and towns of eastern Ontario, and pleased that residents at the doors express support for our food policies: improving access to locally grown food; better labelling so consumers know its source; a total re-think of farm assistance programs; and more inspections at the boarder to ensure that imported food is safe

They sat around another table covered with computers, Blackberrys, and cameras - and the occasional cold hamburger as they fed themselves and the voracious 24 hour news cycle. Mr. Ignatieff was allowed little rest as he was immediately briefed for the next event. In two days on the bus we attended whistle stops, town halls question-and-answer sessions, a briefing and session of hammering nails at a Habitat for Humanity project, a Board of Trade lunch and a celebration for our uniformed public servants – the military, fire and police services. We started fresh in the mornings and ended the days wrinkled and weary. But my time on the bus was exhilarating, interesting and educational - an amazing way to learn about our country. I can only imagine the sense of Canada that will be gained by Mr. Ignatieff and the Liberal Team after a summer “On The Bus. Marjory Loveys is the Federal Liberal candidate for LeedsGrenville

NEVIL HUNT nevil.hunt@metroland.com

Mayoral candidate Jim Watson is halfway through a series of visits to some of Ottawa’s rural communities, and he says he’s already heard from many frustrated voters. After an earlier stop in Cumberland, Watson met residents in Greely on July 28. More than 40 people heard him speak at the Greely Community Centre, and about half stepped up to the microphone to ask questions. Watson said he’s found that rural Ottawa residents have expressed the greatest dissatisfaction with amalgamation. “Rural residents too often feel disconnected from their government.” he said. A lengthy question-and-answer session was somewhat dominated by discussion of a future recreation path in Osgoode ward and the pros and cons of allowing snowmobiles on the trail. Watson showed

that he’s kept up with Osgoode ward’s local news when the issue of a new multiuse trail was raised. Members of the Osgoode Carleton Snowmobile Trail Club (OCSTC) asked if Watson would stand by the two-year agreement the club has to use the cityowned pathway in return for maintaining the former rail bed. Other local residents said snowmobiles make too much noise at all hours of the day and night, and make it dangerous for others to use the trail. Watson said the question of motorized vehicles on the trail will end up with the city’s transportation and transit committee after October’s election, and the public will have a chance to comment then. OCSTC board member Bruce Patterson offered to take Watson on a snowmobile trip through rural Ottawa to see the trail network firsthand. On Aug. 26, Watson will be at North Gower’s Alfred Taylor Recreation Centre from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Ryan’s Day marks 600th project

ERICA BRUCE Special to the Advance

To celebrate Ryan’s Day on July 27, the Ryan’s Well Foundation is announcing another momentous milestone – the completion of its 600th water and sanitation project. In just over one year, Ryan’s Well has completed an additional 100 projects bringing access to clean water and sanita-

tion to over 685,000 people. In a northern Ugandan village, Ryan’s Day is celebrated each year on July 27. The day honours Ryan Hreljac of Kemptville, whose foundation is also based in Kemptville. This day marks the anniversary of Hreljac’s first trip to the Angolo Primary School in 1999 - the site of his first well. More than 10 years later, this well continues to serve the school and neighbour-

ing communities. Each year on this day students take time off school to volunteer in their own town and surrounding communities. “It is humbling to have a day recognized in my honour,” said Hreljac. “But it is even more rewarding to see the positive impacts of our projects on communities, especially children.” The Angolo Primary School is just one example where a well and a latrine

(constructed in 2007) allow children the opportunity to go to school rather than spend hours a day collecting water. Children also learn about such hygiene practices as washing your hands and preparing food properly. For more information, visit the website www.ryanswell.ca Erica Bruce is the communications coordinator for the Ryan’s Well Foundation.

BRIAN WILSON Even though it is only August, hockey is back for next season! The 73’s held their main camp July 9 to 11 at the North Grenville Municipal Centre. The 73’s have gone through some personnel changes since the end of their playoff series against the Brockville Braves, the eventual Fred Page Cup champions and semi-finalists at the RBC Cup. In the early spring, after leading his team to their first ever playoff berth, head coach Chris Droeske tendered his resignation. Chris stated that he felt he no longer had the time, energy or passion that any team deserves from their head coach. As is usually the case in these situations, the rest of the coaching staff also was replaced. On April 2, the 73’s announced that Pat Malloy would assume the responsibilities of head coach. Pat has an impressive hockey pedigree.

He leaves the position of associate coach with the Ottawa Junior Senators to come to Kemptville. Pat also coached the Ottawa Valley Titans to three championships, including two provincial championships. This past spring he was an associate coach with the Australian national men’s hockey team at the IIHF II World Championships in Mexico City. Also joining the organization is Bob Thompson as the Director of Player Personnel. Bob brings with him a wealth of hockey knowledge that will be helpful to the team members. He will also assist in developing education plans and in the future growth of the players. Rounding out the new staff is Shawn Patrick as assistant coach. Shawn arrives in Kemptville with Junior B head coaching experience, recently with the Shawville Pontiacs. He also was named “Coach of the Year” twice while with the Arnprior Packers. Paul Shilton joins us as Head

Scout and video coach. Paul is also currently the eastern Ontario scout for the Windsor Spitfires and now has two Memorial Cup rings. Andrew Allen is the team’s goaltending consultant. Andrew brings lots of experience, having played NCAA hockey and a career in the American and East Coast leagues. He also was a back-up for the Florida Panthers. At the main camp, 70 to 80 players were giving it their all to catch the eye of the coaches. The players were 73’s veterans, 73’s draft choices and invitees as well as a few walk-ons. The players were both local and from out of the district. There were players from Quebec, B. Time changes many things but love & memory ever clings. A booklet of commemorative verses is available for viewing at our office to help you get through this difficult time.

In Memoriam

In Memory of Diane (Kenny) Clark July 12th, 2009

SCOTT: In loving memory of a dear daughter, Linda Christie(Scott) Who passed away accidentally July 31, 1977. Somewhere way up above us Dwells a dear daughter of mine. Whom I looked on as a treasure Whom I cherished as divine. My heart aches with sadness And silent tears will always flow. What it meant to lose you, Linda No one will ever know. They say there is a reason They say that time will heal. But neither time nor reason Will change the way I feel. The years we had together Are worth their weight in gold The joy and love you gave me Will be mine to have and hold. Some day, Linda, I will meet you Some day I know not when But I know that day will come And we’ll never part again. So sadly missed and lovingly remembered, from Mom and Brother Robert.

We cry everyday because we miss you so much. We think, why? Why? Why is life so unfair? Why does he need you, up there? Is it a dream? It can’t be true? A year ago, you were taken from us Yes, right out of the blue. We wish you were here with us. Camping, laughing & having fun. Playing cards & “Bingo” And having won. We can see the smile on your face, As if it was only yesterday. We see you at the track, As Jesse & Cole race, back to back. Oh, you should see little Riley, He will be 2 years old in November. He has red hair, baby blue eyes And as cute, as ever. Zoey the cat is now living with us. We think of how you would have loved him, cuddling, petting, purring and such. As the seasons changed this past year, Everywhere we turn, We felt you were near. A morning bird chirping in the tree, A wild flower on the side of the road, Or that great country song on the radio, makes me think of you and our family. Our favorite time of the year, Looking for pumpkins, as we run and cheer. Watching the leaves change color & fall, but we never forget, the best of all. Halloween!! When the kids dress up. Decorating, candy And all that fun stuff.

BIRTHS

All the pretty lights, Is what we see. Also, that special ornament, On the Christmas tree. Our annual trip down East, Well, it just won’t be the same. Cancer is such a terrible thing, I wish there was someone to blame?! Walking down the beach, There is so much that you would see. A pretty shell, colored glass or an agate, you would always find, for you and me. As this year has gone by and The seasons passed, We will never forget you and all the fun times we have had. Everyday that goes by & I feel blue, I will look around & see all the pretty things, and I remember the beautiful you. Mom! Nanny! We miss you so! So much more than you’ll ever know. Love Always & Forever, Kim, Kelly & Families. X0X0X0

The

Metcalfe theatre announces changes KRISTY WALLACE

kristy.wallace@metroland.com

Just Kiddin’ Theatre has recently gone through some changes. “We are growing and these changes reflect that growth,”said Andrie Nel, executive director. Some of the changes include capping individual drama groups at 15. The flagship after school

group on Wednesday afternoons has also shifted to a 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. timeslot. In support of the new groups, Just Kiddin’ Theatre commissioned the writing of The Gillian Trilogy. The trilogy shows different perspectives in a “doomsday” scenario. “What is really exciting is that it caters to our unique needs very well,” said Nel. Nel said one of the more dis-

appointing changes is that registration fees have gone up from $50 to $80. “They are still very low and remain consistent with our mandate to provide accessible programming but they better reflect our financial reality,” said Nel. The Mainstage program begins Sept. 11 and registration is currently underway. Visit: www.justkiddintheatre.com for details.
