The shovel is in the ground and the North Grenville Public Library is on its way.

The library has secured the funds for their $5 million dollar new centralized public library in downtown Kemptville. On Friday, June 11, a group of people walked down into the growing gravelfilled excavation that will by next year, be the new library. With construction equipment sitting in the background, the group officially kicked off the long awaited construction.

It has been almost a decade since the North Grenville Public Library Board set out to build a new library for all of North Grenville.

Back in 1998, after the amalgamation of the town of Kemptville, Oxford-on-Rideau Township and South Gower, the North Grenville Public Library found itself operating out of four small library centres.

There was a branch of the library in Oxford Mills, Kemptville, South Gower and Burritt’s Rapids.

Back in 2002 the library board realized that the cost of retaining the four branches was too much.

Renovations to expand the library service and make all of the different branches accessible were not possible because of the cost and the age of the buildings. The library board decided that there was only one reasonable alternative - a new centralized library in Kemptville. Sue Higgins the CEO of the library was thrilled to see the groundbreaking ceremony finally take place. “The smiles on the faces say it all,” she said adding, “We are now counting the days to opening day.”

Gord Brown, MP for Leeds and Grenville has been instrumental in helping out the library board cause. He was at the ground breaking ceremony. “What a great day for North Grenville,” he said. “The library will be a draw for people to come downtown,” he added.

North Grenville Mayor Bill Gooch agreed that the library will be a very special place for all of North Grenville. “This will be a key part of downtown Kemptville,” he told the crowd at the ceremony. “It will be an economic generator for the community.”

MPP Steve Clark has watched and helped the library as it went through all of the different phases of its struggle to get funding.

He thanked his predecessor Senator Bob Runciman along with several key federal cabinet ministers who supported the project. “This is truly a project that has touched many people,” he said, “It is here today as a result of all of your hard work,” he said addressing members of the library board and the public at the construction site.

The goal of getting a new public library has been one that the library board and its supporters have never wavered on.

“It is a big plus to have all of the new options a new library will bring,” said Room to Read Chair Bill McElrea. He added that he was pleased to see Helen Groskops there. Helen Groskops has been retired from the library for the past 27 years and she worked in the library for 46 years.

Norma and George Fisher are both honorary chairpersons of the Room to Read campaign.

“This is a historic moment for Kemptville,” said George Fisher.

He attributed the success of the project to past and present community members who would not allow the idea of a new library die. “Dedicated citizens made it a reality,” he said.

A piece of North Grenville will be sent to Kandahar to accompany Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan.

The initiative comes as part of the “Flag Project,” that was started in previous tours in Afghanistan.

The project gives an opportunity for Camp Nathan Smith members to have their city flag flying at the entrance of the camp, amongst those of the hometowns of several of the camp’s members.

Warrant Officer Jason Ritchie of Oxford Station and Petty Officer Second class (PO2) David Cox of Kemptville are currently stationed with the Canadian forces in Afghanistan and wrote a letter to the municipality asking to send the North Grenville flag.

They are stationed at Camp Nathan Smith in Kandahar City, with the ProvinReconstruction Covering cial team and Task Force the local Kandahar’s U.S. unit

the 97th MP Battalion.

“Given its success, my group (Rotation 9) has decided to pursue the initiative,” said Ritchie in a letter to the municipality.”

At council on Monday night, all members including MPP Steve Clark signed a letter indicating how honoured they were to have the North Grenville flag accompanying Canadian soldiers.

“It’s tremendous that we can have the North Grenville flag flying proud,” Clark said.

Council had their own remarks in the letter.

“North Grenville is particularly proud to acknowledge the contribution of our soldiers in this area,” said Mayor Bill Gooch. “Especially in view of the fact that Private Blake Williamson, 1st Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment; a member of our community, gave his life in the performance of his duties at Panjwaii district, west of Kandahar City.”

Once the flag and the letter arrive at Camp Nathan Smith, Ritchie said they

will fly it for the duration of the tour.

Camp Nathan Smith, which is where the North Grenville flag is being sent, has more than 500 Canadians that combines the expertise of diplomats, corrections specialists, development experts, Canadian police, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and the military.

The flag will be sent back at the end of their mission, planned for winter of 2010. In addition, a certificate will accompany the North Grenville flag certifying that the flag was flown during Rotation 9, at Camp Nathan Smith, Kandahar, Afghanistan.

At Monday’s council meeting, the sale of surplus buildings were also discussed that included comments from the Heritage Committee. The buildings that are currently being discussed are Acton’s Corners, the former fire station, Kemptville Library, South Gower Library the courthouse and Oxford Mills Library. COMMUNITY

Some things are forever During a time when just about everything we are familiar with seems to be changing or being redesigned, some welcome news has arrived in the form of a North Grenville Chamber of Commerce workshop featuring speaker, Roy Prevost.

The main theme of his presentation was that customer service and good value still lead the parade of reasons why we want to deal with one person or another or one business or another.

Price is only one way of differentiating one product from the next, and there is no doubt that the lower the price the greater the chance people will want that particular product. However, in the list of reasons to buy from merchant X instead of merchant Y is how you feel about the product and the people you are dealing with.

To hear an acknowledged expert in the field of customer service and successful business strategies, promote the idea that common sense, courtesy and quality, combined with a reasonable and fair price is the solution for just about all of us when it comes to buying a product or an idea, is refreshing.

That brings us all to the shores of the fake lake.

The optics are sad in this particular political issue and the result is for many, disgust and frustration.

The government of the day has forgotten all about customer service and as many would agree, the government has lost track of who their clients are.

All of the current federal political parties with the exception of the NDP and the Green party seem to be failing to impress their constituents with their actions. The tragedy is that there are more than a few politicians out there who have consistently come through for us rural folks and they may end up wearing shabby clothes because of what their leadership has come up with, not what they have done themselves. Honesty, is still the best policy.

Having a healthy relationship with a customer or a voter is still the way to go. Ironically, the business of making money and making a profit, or even getting that vote has as much to do with how you feel about the people you are appealing to as it does about the quality of the product or idea you are offering. I guess you will never be able to take the person out of the equation.

The 4th annual fundraiser golf tournament and Silent Auction for the Kemptville Karate-Team Canada will be held at Rideau Glen Golf Club on Sunday, June 27, 2010. Registration will be until June 19.. The tournament includes 18 holes of golf, a banquet, and offers a prize for Hole-in-One on par 3 along with other prizes, a silent auction and a 50/50 draw. Never doubt what your small actions can do When I wake up in the morning, I never know what to expect or who I’m going to cross paths with when I come into work.

Sometimes I meet the bad, the worse or the downright monsters.

A bad encounter with one of these negative balls of energy can leave a bad taste in your mouth.

But sometimes, that one person you meet reminds you that there are remarkable people in this world.

I met up recently with a lady named Joan Nolan – a Kemptville ambassador for the National Capital Region Children’s Wish Foundation.

She called me because she wanted a story thanking the businesses and volunteers for their contributions – she requested that the focus be kept off her.

When I walked into her house, I was overwhelmed with the bright paint on her walls and the sun streaming through her cozy living room. “I like to keep it bright in

KRISTY WALLACE here, dear,” is what she told me when I complimented the colour of her walls. We sat down at her kitchen table and she told me about the Children’s Wish Foundation and all of the generous area businesses who have offered their help. But I still wanted to know why Joan specifically dedicated so much time to the foundation. Sipping coffee, she told me about her grandchildren. Pictures of the little guys were scattered across her bright kitchen walls as if to remind her of the more pleasant things in life. Her eyes slowly welled up with tears as she told me how priceless a child’s laughter is to her. in the hospital who are not as lucky as her grandchildren. That’s what motivates her. I watched as this woman who I’d never met before sit in front of me and tell me how great the community has been in helping her cause – but she didn’t want any credit. I Somehow, all those negative people I’ve come across were erased.

My encounter with Joan taught me negative energy can be killed off with positive energy. As much as I think everyone should be like Joan, you don’t have to dedicate a huge amount of time to spread positive energy. Next time you’re waiting in the drive-thru at Tim Hortons, buy the car behind you a coffee or a donut. It will be a pleasant surprise for them when they pull up to get their order.

Then maybe next time, that person will do the same for the person waiting behind them, and so on. Never doubt how great of an impact your positive actions could have, whether they’re big or small.

On the morning of June 2, a male was seen coming out of a Reuben Crescent backyard and leaving on a bicycle. The youth on the stolen bike headed south towards Kemptville Public School. The suspect is described as approximately 14

years old and wearing a black hoody with a black and white circle on the back. The bike is described as a blue and white BMX Mongoose. A day later a decorative star was stolen from the front of the same residence. The investigations are ongoing.

On the evening of June 8, police observed three individuals walking to the rear of the Merrickville Medical Centre and St.

Marguerite Bourgeoys School. The males were followed and were observed smoking what was believed to be marijuana.

The males were approached by the officers and three grams of marijuana and a bag with marijuana residue was turned over to the police.

ROBYN HARRIS Two budding philanthropists raised funds for the Room to Read Campaign during their bookmark and lemonade sale on May 30. Friends, Sidney Boettger and Nicole Geleynsi, both 9, were making bookmarks, when Nicole’s grandmother, Martha, suggested that they could sell their bookmarks and donate the proceeds to the new library. Delighted with the suggestion, the girls got busy and made dozens of bookmarks and some tasty lemonade. Of course they needed to advertise, so the two friends made flyers and then distributed them to every house on their block the morning of the sale.

The bookmarks, made of decorated popsicle sticks, were purchased by kind-hearted neighbours who came out to support the girls and the Room to Read Campaign. A total of $39 was raised from their event.

During a cheque presentation at the campaign office, Nicole said that it made sense to donate to the new library building fund because “everyone in my family likes books.” Both families commented on their excitement about a new central library in North Grenville.

LIZ ANGUS Crowds filled the North Grenville Curling Club arena last Friday evening and Saturday morning, taking advantage of the large selection and low prices at HeyDay. This was HeyDay’s 50th year. Each June, since 1961, the Kemptville District Hospital Auxiliary has organized a gigantic yard sale to raise funds for hospital equipment.

Fittingly, this year was the biggest success ever. Final sales figures topped the previous record reached in 2008.

The weather co-operated - neither too hot nor too cold - so shoppers were able to comfortably enjoy browsing for those special items to take home.

Shoppers came from miles around to snap up bargains in clothing, books, linens, china, craft supplies, electrical appliances, furniture and sporting goods.

Children and parents swarmed the toy section.

At 1 p.m. on Saturday, winners of all the draws and raffles were announced.

The big winner was Fred Lohmann of Osgoode, who won $3,468 on the 50-50 draw, for which tickets have been on sale since April.

Other raffle winners were Linda Bridgeman, Teresa Crawford, Shelley Doucet, Cathy Duncan, Heather Hughes, Carol Lavigne, Diane Miller, Chris Morgan, Ferne Richardson, Marilyn Schroder, Belle Severn, Lise Snedden, Connie Soucy, Terry Sullivan, Lillian Thorpe, Sandra Togh, and Brian Walker.

Prizes included donations from Canadian Tire, Down the Garden Path, Home Hardware, Pioneer Nursery, Rideau Woodland Ramble, Rooney Feeds, and Weatherall Gardens.

The event’s success reflected the efforts of a great many individuals as well as community groups and businesses who contributed.

Dozens of volunteers participated in the setup and operation of HeyDay, contributing hundreds of hours over four days from Wednesday through Saturday.

Several service clubs, including the Lions and Kinsmen, sent members to help with set-up and cleanup.

In addition to thanking the volunteers, donors and shoppers, the KDH Auxiliary would like to thank the many businesses and groups that contributed to Hey Day’s success this year.

This includes too many to list here—including some 200 who posted the HeyDay flyer to advertise the event—but several deserve special mention.

The Curling Club rented their facilities to the Auxiliary for the event, and provided gracious and unfailing support during the four days that Hey Day occupied their premises.

Mike Martin of Super Sound Productions set up a sound system and broadcast live announcements and commentary at Hey Day on Saturday morning.

The Kemptville Players ran the children’s centre (toys, games and books), and the Kemptville Horticultural Society organized and ran the plant section.

Kemptville Truck Centre, Kemptville Building Centre, and dePencier Building Supply generously contributed trucks and drivers to pick up large items.

Canteen supplies were donated by Albert’s Meat Shop, Beking Poultry Farm, Giant Tiger, Lanthier Bakery, and the B&H Foodliner. The B&H and Johnston’s Independent Grocer lent grocery carts, which were of great help in transporting goods during the sorting and set-up process.

Dumpsters were provided by Tomlinson Environmental Services and by “Fast Eddie” Auto Recycling & Container Service.

The Salvation Army collected all unsold clothing. North Grenville Community Living took the unsold books, and leftover sports equipment went to the Youth Centre. Selected unsold furniture was donated to Lazarus House.

This is truly a community event. For 50 years the KDH Auxiliary has brought people together for HeyDay, combining their efforts to make each year’s sale a new success.

This year’s Hey Day convener, Bev Carson, says “Mark your calendars now for next June 10-11: those are the dates for HeyDay 2011!”

Kemptville District Hospital first opened its doors on June 28, 1960 after years of planning and fundraising by a determined group of local volunteers.

On June 26th 2010, KDH is giving back to the community – with a whole day of family fun at Riverside Park and then turning the NG Curling Club into the scene of a 60s sock-hop.

A volunteer committee, chaired by Jim McManaman of Solution One Financial, has been hard at work organizing the day and ensuring that there is something for everyone.

Community support and sponsorships has been forthcoming – Scotiabank has signed on as the event’s Gold Sponsor.

The day will start with a Volleyball Tournament at 9 a.m. This is a mixed recreational tournament being organized by Barb MacEachern from Keller Williams Solid Rock Realty Inc. Registration costs $150 per team and teams must have a minimum of 50 per cent female players At noon, approximately 50 vehicles are expected to take part in a Poker Run through Spencerville, Prescott, Cardinal and Heckston.

There will be prizes for the best combinations of dice rolls. Registration costs are $25 per vehicle but are waived if participants raise $100 in sponsorship.

Sponsored by Kemptville Building Centre, the Children’s Area will open up at 1 p.m. and will include a bouncy castle, face painting, obstacle course and much more. KDH’s own OR nurses will be on hand to perform life-saving procedures on any injured bears at the Teddy Bear Hospital.

With support from the Kemptville Kinsmen and Brent Kelaher from the Branch Restaurant, the Beer Gardens and live entertainment will begin at 1 p.m. Several local bands will be on-hand, concluding with Roxzilla taking the stage around 7 p.m.

Woodland’s from Spencerville will be serving the best BBQ chicken in the Valley from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets for this will sell out quickly so we recommend that you consider purchasing your tickets in advance.

And finally, the day will finish off with a real 1960s style dance sponsored by Royal Lepage Gale Real Estate. The NG Curling Club will be rocking with Eddy and the Stingrays on stage at 8 p.m.

The Metcalfe Jets are hoping to build on the success they had at the end last season when they hold the first of their spring and summer camps June 12 and 13 at Leitrim Arena.

After going undefeated in the last three weeks in Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League (EOJHL) play, team president George Giroux wants to continue to stimulate positive results.

The first two-day camp will involve fitness and scrimmage for up to four hockey teams, with the idea of getting more players onto the ice.

There will be an off-ice session later in the month and other camp in August before the team is picked at the end of that month.

“They don’t usually fill up, but the players get more ice than they can handle,” Giroux said. “Some of them have rusty skates at this time of year.”

Giroux expects to see two types of players.

First, those who have been out before and hopeful of earning a spot on the team.

This was the Metcalfe Jets team last year. The team went undefeated in the last three weeks of the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League.

Secondly, those younger players just looking for a taste of EOJHL action in the future.

It’s the 15 and 16-year-old player that

the camp is tailored towards.

“We’re trying to motivate the players to continue and improve themselves,” Giroux said.

“They’ll see that we’re serious about our hockey program and they’ll see that there’s a lot of competition out there.

They’ll see what they have to do to play at this level.”

The Jets finished last in the league’s tough Metro Division with 35 points.

But Giroux feels they have been improving in each of the last three years in the Metro-Valley Conference.

The team officially serves the communities of Osgoode, Manotick, Metcalfe, and Russell regions.

However the organization can gather players from anywhere it chooses.

While the team has athletes from places like Sudbury and even the United States, Giroux said nearly 70 per cent of the team was comprised of locally-born players – the highest in the EOJHL. “The idea is to promote hockey and the participation of as many local players who think they have the stuff or want to measure themselves to see what they need to do to get ready for real tryouts in the following year,” Giroux said.

The Jets will play 40 regular season contests next season starting in September, plus two as part of a showcase event September 19 and 20.

Students at École Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys School in Merrickville recently went back in time 400 years to get a taste of what it was like to be a French settler in Ontario.

“Students are learning how to make fire, they’ll eat pea soup, and will learn about canoeing and all the traditional things,” said grade 6 teacher Johanne Bégin during the presentation.

Dressed in traditional garb, Christian Pilon showed students what it was like to be a coureur des bois – a French settler who was involved in the fur trade.

Students laughed as Pilon loaded sixth grade student Avery O’Brien up with heavy luggage and furs to carry on his back just like French settlers had to do centuries ago.

“Kids were pretty excited to see him today,” said Bégin. “He’s really outgoing and very fun so I think the kids are really into it.”

Bégin added that the morning-long visit was one way the French school in Merrickville is trying to teach its students about French heritage and culture in Ontario.

“Merrickville kids are not really rooted and they don’t have a chance to see French culture because it’s mostly Anglophone people [in the community],” said Bégin.

With the 400th anniversary of Francophones settling in Ontario this September, Bégin said the school is currently working out something for Pilon to give a presentation to parents.

Most students at the school have at least one Francophone parent, Bégin said and most of the language spoken at the students’ homes is English.

“We thought it would be a way to expose them to the culture,” she said. She added that the French Merrickville school has children from all over the region, including Merrickville, Cardinal, Spencerville, Perth and Kemptville.

“We try to do as much as we can in the school to facilitate the connection with the French culture,” said Bégin.

“I think more and more, the school is being recognized by the community and around.” École Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys is currently planning a celebration for Franco Ontarian’s successes of 400 years of Francophones in Ontario, 35 years of the Franco Ontarian flag and the passing of the law to make Sept. 25 Franco Ontarian day.

In addition, there are current efforts to bring together area Francophones to celebrate the achievements of Franco Ontarians. Sainte-MargueriteBourgeoys recently held a meeting at Jonsson’s Independent to discuss ways to regroup.
