Director’s Note
This show has a special history in our community. The original Kalamazoo Civic production was ready to open in 2020, final dress complete, when the world shut down. Sarah, who now serves as our music director, was Olaf in that cast. Oddly enough, what we all lived through that year gave this story new meaning and a clearer perspective on what can happen when uncertainty and isolation take hold.
And that happens to be what Frozen Jr. is really about: not just sisterhood, hit songs, or a castle made of ice, but fear, the courage to be seen for who we truly are, and the grace to understand what’s different in others. What I love about Frozen is how it turns struggle into connection. Beneath all the sparkle and humor, it asks what might happen if we stopped hiding, opened our hearts, and met each other with compassion instead of judgment.
Together, Katey, Sarah, and I worked to build a rehearsal room grounded in trust, a place where the kids could take risks, explore, and discover without self-consciousness. This cast has truly become a family. Each performer brings something unique. It feels fitting that a story about embracing different gifts became the space where these kids learned to celebrate those gifts in each other.
My hope is that our Frozen Jr. reminds you to do the same: to meet what you don’t understand with curiosity, and to keep choosing connection, even when it’s hard. That’s the kind of world we’re trying to build, onstage and off. This performance is dedicated to the company of the 2020 production of Frozen Jr., whose spirit and resilience continue to inspire us.
