This story is Quasimodo’s and his search for love and friendship. He is a man that has different abilities and wants to be known for who he is and not what he looks like on the outside. The true hero to the story, he just wants to be understood and find his place in society. Esmeralda, a gypsy* young woman, shows him the friendship and love that he has been searching for.
Esmeralda’s storyis secondary to that of Quasimodo’s but is that of a woman who was born to a French mother but raised by the Romani. She is a kind, understandingandstrongindividualthatknowsrightfromwrong. She just wants justice for her people, who are persecuted by Claude Frollo, thearchdeaconofNotreDame.
“Whatmakesamonster,andwhatmakesaman?”
Thisquestionispresentedwithintheproductionatthetopandendof theshow.IsQuasimodothetruemonsterofthestory, becauseofthe way he looks, or is the pious Claude Frollo? This play, from Victor Hugo’s work of historical fiction, explores just that. Frollo, the antagonist of the story, shows us that the power of one man can destroy the lives of many others, through his actions, words, and beliefs in the church. He not only shuns outcasts of the world, represented in the Victor Hugo novel by gypsy* culture, but also kills and betrays to build the power of the church and his own sense of righteousness.
Early in the rehearsal process I asked the cast why this story is important to them and today’s society. They came back with some very interesting observations concerning religious and racial persecution, dealing with marginalized people and how they were treated in the past and how it reflects what is happening today, politicalcorruption, andhowpeoplewithdifferentabilitiesaretreated, arejustamongthefewreasonsthatwerepresented.
Lean forward and immerse yourself in the story. In The Hunchback of Notre Dame, we see that those who are different than us may be themosttruthful, honest, andhelpingindividuals.
Enjoytheshow!
