Over 60 years since its Civic debut, A Raisin in the Sun returns to the Civic Auditorium. The Civic was the first community theatre in the nation to present Lorraine Hansberry’s masterpiece of a play. The title is derived from a Langston Hughes poem, "Harlem". With A Raisin in the Sun, Hansberry became the first Black woman to have a play produced on Broadway in 1959. A film adaptation followed in 1961. This play is still actively taught and performed in schools/theatres across the country. It is highly regarded as one of the greatest dramas ever written for the American Theatre. It’s been my honor to direct this Centennial Celebration Production for our 94th season.
Anthony J. Hamilton DirectorI first saw the play in 2004 when the Civic presented it in the Parish Theatre. It was directed by Robert L. Smith (who would become my friend and mentor). I will never forget that experience; it has stayed with me almost 20 years later! It was the first time I’d ever seen anything like it: a story about people I recognized from my own life. I saw myself and my family represented in a profound and highly theatrical manner.
We have worked for weeks to present this impactful evening of theatre to you. You’re invited to forget everything for the next several hours. Be in communion with us. Talk back to us, laugh and cry with us, allow yourself to be swept up in this timeless story. I guarantee you will see yourself or someone you know in one (or several) of these rich and dynamic characters.
Peace ‘n Blessings, Anthony J. Hamilton

This is my very first play and I am in it with my real live mom, who’s playing my mom, and my real live grandma, who’s playing my grandma! Most of my role in the play relates to my real life! This was a lot to remember but not more than my mom and grandma. I like everyone in the play. I love playing basketball, football and playing 2K22 and Madden on my PS4. I love to spend time with my family and friends. I am thankful for this opportunity and would like to do it again. Thanks for coming to see me!
Rev. Karen Moorman (Lena Younger) is a pastor at Grant Chapel AME Church in Three Rivers, Michigan.
