Research at the Institute of Planning deals with the development of sustainability and architectural quality in the planning of landscapes, towns, urban spaces and settlements. The background for the research is changes in the conditions of planning, which are created by globalisation, climate changes and society's development from production to service and consumption. The result is new spatial types, methods, ideas and proposals, which are generalised and create new concepts and architectural practice. The research is linked to the Institute's main areas and centres. Under the heading of ‘The Global Garden’, landscape planning covers a field that ranges from restoration of historical structures to the development of parks, infrastructure and urban spaces as well as new settlements. The Center for Public Space Research has completed projects on theory and method related to urban space research, urban spaces in the light of climatic changes and outdoor spaces in transformed harbour areas. The international conference ‘Urbanism and Urban Qualities, New Data and Methodologies’ has been completed in collaboration with Aalborg University and the University of Copenhagen. Urban planning covers the structure and dynamics of regions and cities, and planning is interpreted as a way of phrasing action plans that can intervene in development and steer it in specific directions. The Center for Urban Planning carries out projects on density and sustainability, strategies for sustainable urban transformation and Danish harbour transformation projects. The discipline organises a Master's programme in Strategic Urban Planning and the first two-year programme ended in the summer 2010. The Department of Human Settlements has completed the project ‘Home Space, Maputo’ in Mozambique and developed the field ‘Humanitarian Disaster: Challenges for Architecture’ in collaboration with the university in Santiago de Chile, the University of Copenhagen and UNHCR. Urban planning ranges from public spaces and homes to settlement and building planning with projects on sustainability and the idea and function of the dwelling. Workshops have been held in relation to the exhibition ‘Land – Architecture – People’ in collaboration with visiting professor, architect Pierre d'Avoine. The collaboration at Center for Housing and Welfare has been concluded with the book ‘Bolig og velfærd – 27 forskningsprojekter om danskere og deres boliger’ (Housing and Welfare – 27 research projects about Danes and their homes). The ‘Interreg IV’ project ‘Sound Settlements’ has been launched. The Center for Sports and Architecture has completed projects on sports and culture buildings, buildings for education, health and physical activity as well as urban planning. The conference AproPOS was held in connection with the publishing of the book ‘AproPOS – Arkitektur, Pædagogik og Sundhed’ (AproPOS – Architecture, Pedagogy and Health). The centre also organised the exhibition ‘Outing’. Furthermore, it must be mentioned that in the spring of 2010, Architect and Reader Finn Barnow was awarded a Doctorate in Architecture for his four-volume work ‘Aspects of the History of Urban Development’.
