In order to meet the needs of a rapidly growing senior population, the State of Hawai‘i Legislature instituted the Kupuna Education Center as part of an aging and long-term care initiative. The mission of the Kupuna Education Center is to develop and provide training and education for the older adult community population in active aging, provide family caregiver training, and coordinate this information with all of the University of Hawaiʻi Community Colleges.

The Office of Continuing Education and Training is launching its DIY Personal Enrichment Series for the Fall 2019 semester. The series will give the students the opportunity to learn from an instructor in the classroom on a number of topics that will save them time and money.

For Fall, we are starting with a bang with courses that will be offered at the Culinary Institute of Pacific. This new state of the art facility will be offering Butchery, Beer Making, Baking, Pickling, and few more. Then we move it over to some DIY cultural classes with lei making and lauhala weaving.

We plan on adding more for Spring 2020 and we are looking for ideas from the community. We invite you to let us know what you would like to see offered to the public at continuinged.kapiolani.hawaii.edu/ survey. Hawai‘i Cook Apprentice Program

Kapi‘olani Community College is leading the way in bringing new apprenticeship programs to healthcare and culinary professions in Hawai‘i.

Healthcare professionals at all levels have historically completed a “real world learning experience” under the names of internship, externship, clinical practicum, residency, field work, and other titles. The great majority of these experiences are provided to students in the form of unpaid hours.

An apprenticeship has the same two basic components at the “internship” model real world learning and classroom education.

The critical difference is the apprentice is an employee of the clinical site – and thus the clinical site selects the apprentice. The apprentice is paid during his/her apprenticeship hours.

The employer has the opportunity to assign its best and most knowledgeable employees as a mentor for the apprentice. This is a great strategy to ensure the employee understands the employer’s values, institutional knowledge, and the systems and processes from day one of the apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships are available as part of the Optometry Assistant, Phlebotomy, Pharmacy Technician, and Community Health Worker programs. Details for the Community Health Worker (CHW) program can be found at:

The Hawai‘i Cook Apprentice Program is a 30-week comprehensive culinary training program that offers current back-of-thehouse food service workers the opportunity to take several classes at the KapCC Culinary School absolutely free.

Participants attend one 6-hour hands-on class per week and upon completion earn the Hawai‘i State Cook Certification as well as have the classes count for credit at KapCC. Participants will also work through a list of on-the-job competencies at their workplace. Participation is limited. Contact Program Coordinator Marcus Fiske at marcusjt@hawaii.edu to learn more.

Hawai‘i Restaurant Management Apprenticeship Program The Apprentice will be enrolled in a 25-week online hybrid training program that is designed to work around a full-time work schedule. Classes they take can be done on their own schedule and should only take a few hours each week. The Safety & Sanitation course can also be used as credit in the KapCC Culinary Program should participants choose to continue their education by applying to KapCC. The program is available for anyone STATEWIDE.

BEGINNING UKULELE & INTERMEDIATE

MELT INTRODUCTION WORKSHOP

We have multiple options for the Ukulele player from beginning to the advanced. The beginning class will teach you basic information about your instrument and the chords.

Once you are comfortable with the chords and strumming you are ready for the intermediate class. The advanced class is for students who are comfortable with the chords, strumming, and are familiar with several songs. Note: Bring your own ukulele. Located at the Waikiki Mindful Learning Center.

This workshop teaches you how to use specialized soft rollers and small MELT Hand and Foot Treatment Balls to simulate the results of manual therapy. Participants will learn the MELT method, a simple self-care solution to help reduce or avoid chronic pain symptoms, improve balance and alignment, and feel better overall. The class include one MELT practice session. This workshop is appropriate for people of varying ages. However, the ability to get up and down from the floor is necessary. This class is a prerequisite for other MELT classes.

TAI CHI FOR ARTHRITIS FOR FALL PREVENTION (TCAFP) Basic Tai chi for Arthritis for Fall Prevention prepares students with no background in tai chi to practice and become familiar with the warm-up, first six movements and the Cool Down segments of TCAFP. Tai Chi for Arthritis for Fall Prevention (TCAFP) is an evidence-based program that is supported by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) targeting seniors to improve balance.

In addition, the TCAFP promotes relaxation, flexibility, and strength. The Hawai`i Department of Health (DOH) promotes TCAFP island wide as part of their fall prevention program.

DEMYSTIFYING BEHAVIOR CHANGES WITH DEMENTIA As part of our Dementia Care Series, this class is recommended for caregivers of a friend or family member with Dementia. The instructor will demystify unwanted behaviors associated with dementia and what is lost with brain change and how it affects feelings and actions.

DEMENTIA STAGES This class is recommended for caregivers of a friend or family member with Dementia. The instructor will cover the GEMS model, which recognizes the dynamic nature of the human brain and its abilities. Additionally, the instructor will cover a positive look at dementia stages and appropriate activities.

COMMUNICATION WITH COMPASSION This class targets family caregivers of a friend or family member with Dementia. The instructor will cover normal versus not normal aging, how dementia affects the brain over time, and effective techniques for successful communication specifically Positive Physical Approach and Hand-under-Hand.

Objective: Educate the family and friends about what happens to the brain as we age vs. aging with dementia and the best way to communicate with the individuals with dementia.

Health Education Kapi’olani Community College has a long standing reputation for the short term training programs offered in a variety of healthcare careers. These progrrams range from two to twelve months. They are designed to provide the education and training needed to prepare you for employment in a rewarding job. There is a strong employment demand in Hawai‘i for the graduates of all the programs listed. Each program has unique details. Information Sessions are provided on a regular basis for each program. It is important you attend an Information Session to assist you in registering for the program of your choice. Information Session dates are listed at each program web page.

Massage Therapy

Phlebotomy

In its 18 year, the Kapi`olani Community College’s Massage Therapy program is a 600-hour evening program comprised of coursework with theory, hands-on practice, and competency testing with clinical experience. The length of this program is approximately 11 months. Students who successfully complete the program earn a certificate of competence and are eligible to take the Hawai`i State Board of Massage License Examination, as well as qualify for the Massage and Bodywork License Examination (MBLEx), required for most U.S. mainland states.

Attend an information session to learn whether this program will fit your needs and learn about what to expect while in the program. These sessions are free and no appointment is necessary. FREE parking on-campus.

The nationally approved Phlebotomy program prepares the student to collect specimens from patients for laboratory testing.

There is a focus on collecting and processing blood samples and other body fluids in a safe and accurate manner. A certificate of competence is awarded upon successful completion of the program. Graduates are eligible to take the national certification exam provided by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

The program consists of two parts: • Part 1 – Classroom (145 hours): Taught on

Thursday and Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons.

• Part 2 – Clinical Practicum (100 hours): In a clinic, hospital, or patient service center, Monday through Friday 8 hours per day, for 2.5 weeks.

Optometry Assistant

CDHC for Dental Hygenists

The Optometry Assistant program is one of KapCC’s newest health education programs. It is a one-year apprenticeship employment program including a 145–hour campus course that prepares students for the national Certified Paraoptometric (CPO) Examination offered through the American Optometric Association.

Optometry Assistants assist optometrists in running his/her optometry practice through well-developed on-the-job learning and related classroom instruction. The student apprentices may be employed in private practices or clinics. The campus course is open to those already working in an optometry office and those considering employment in an optometry office.

The Community Dental Health Coordinator (CDHC) program is a six to twelve-month professional development apprenticeship employment program including a 145-hour campus course that empowers dental hygienists to help diverse populations overcome barriers that prevent them from accessing and benefiting from dental health services. They focus on case management, navigation, oral health education and promotion, motivational interviewing and community mapping.

Their expertise link patients to available but underutilized dental care. They serve as advocates, facilitators, motivators, and culture brokers with oral health resources. Their overall goal is empowering community members, communities and dental healthcare systems to achieve positive outcomes in overall health status. The program is open to practicing dental hygienists.

Pharmacy Technician

Surgical Technology

The Pharmacy Technician program is a 305–hour program that prepares students for the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination offered through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists by receiving, processing, and filling prescriptions and medication orders; determining charges and obtaining reimbursements, including insurance and Medicare payments, maintaining medication and inventory control systems, and participating in the administration and management of the pharmacy practice. Graduates may work in retail or hospital pharmacies.

Surgical Technology is a five phase accredited program incorporating prerequisite content from anatomy and physiology, microbiology and medical terminology with program content to prepare the student for the industry. Classroom instruction and onsite operating room exposure introduce the student to the working environment and role of this important member of the surgical team. Surgical technologists master knowledge in aseptic techniques and skills required when setting up the operating room and working during surgical procedures.

In addition, surgical technologists are employed at hospitals and ambulatory sugery centers. Applications for this best qualified, first accepted program are accepted between May 1st and June 1st. Students who successfully complete the program are eligible to take the National Certification Exam for Surgical Technology via the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

PUA for Dental Assistants The Professional Update & Advancement (PUA) program is a six to twelve-month apprenticeship employment program including a 145-hour campus course that prepares dental assistants for the national Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) examination offered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). The program is open to those already working as a dental assistant. Apprentices may be employed in private practices or clinics.

Money Management: Using Excel to Plot Your Life’s Course In this hands-on session, you will learn some basic money management while being introduced to MS Excel. Learn the power of beginning to save just five dollars a day which can provide direction in your life’s journey. Create your own personal budget in Excel and helpful techniques with sticking to it. Learn how to calculate future value formulas in Excel based on your savings goals/plan.

INTRODUCTION TO SURVEY CREATION & ANALYSIS This high-level course utilizing multiple applications is designed for you to engage as a first step for survey creation and analysis. Learn the most important question for the design of your survey and potential biases. Create and send surveys using Google Forms/Sheets. Understand Mean Perceived Learning Scores (MPLS) with Likert Type survey questions as you begin analyzing the responses for an understanding of the survey results. These series of classes are designed for those of you who are intersted in learning proper cooking or baking techniques and skills. Classes are held in the Culinary Institute of the Pacific at Diamond Head. In most cases, you have the oppurtunity to prepare and produce certain foods, sample, and discuss methods and techniques with the chef instructor. To ensure individual attention and safety, class enrollment is limited unless otherwise noted, all participants must be at least 18 years of age, unless accompanied with an adult.

While working in pairs preparing and cooking, this workshop encourages one to be “pono,” while learning about Hawai’i’s history, culture, and language.

DIY stands for “do it yourself.” These processes all involve learning about and gaining the skills that are ordinarily held by professionals.

While there are endless online tutorials that show everything from crafts to large-scale DIY projects, they often gloss over the difficulties that can be encountered.

Doing things on your own also allows you to avoid paying someone else to do it, but doing it well can involve learning a range of skills and techniques. Doing it yourself keeps you from outsourcing these routine tasks to outside professionals.
