KAMUT BRAND WHEAT

THE GRAIN

KAMUT® brand khorasan wheat is an ancient grain, guaranteed under the KAMUT® brand, to never be modified or hybridized, always organically grown, and is prized for its nutrition, ease of digestibility, sweet nutty-buttery taste, and firm texture It is a source of protein, fiber, and vitamins and is high in minerals including selenium These nutrients have many benefits including contribution to normal cognitive function, normal metabolism, maintaining normal blood pressure, and protection from oxidative stress Khorasan is a variety of wheat and has gluten However, the gluten in KAMUT® brand wheat is different than found in modern wheat Many people with sensitivities to modern wheat report being able to eat KAMUT® brand wheat with no difficulty and thus that it is an excellent alternative to modern wheat We created a research program to understand this phenomenon and to confirm the health benefits of KAMUT® brand wheat

ORIGIN

Most likely originating in Mesopotamia, legends exist of this grain being found in Egyptian tombs Farmers in Turkey call the grain “Camel’s Tooth” because of its shape or the “Prophet’s Wheat,” referring to another legend that Noah brought the grain with him on the ark

1949

The Story of KAMUT® brand wheat began when Earl Dedman, a US Airman stationed in Portugal, received some unusual looking grain from a man who claimed to have taken it from a tomb in Egypt Earl sent 36 kernels of the wheat to his father, a farmer near Fort Benton, Montana, USA

1964

The grain called “King Tut wheat” became a local novelty A farmer passed out samples of the grain at the nearby county fair where Bob Quinn, 16 at the time, first saw it In 1977, remembering the giant King Tut wheat, Bob became interested in making a giant wheat snack and Bob’s father, Mack, located a jar of the grain

1978

Bob returned to the family farm near Big Sandy, Montana The wheat was grown to increase the supply, starting from a handful of kernels that were carefully selected by Mack Bob also became interested in organic farming and by 1989, the entire Quinn family farm had become organic

1990

Demand grew rapidly as many people reported enjoying the taste of foods made with the grain and that it was easier to digest compared to modern wheat After positive results of an initial study with wheat sensitive people, Bob recognized the unique and healthy qualities of the grain and sought to protect them by preserving the variety under a trade name

TODAY

KAMUT® brand wheat can be found throughout the world in products including breads, pasta, pizza, cereals, snacks, pastries, crackers, beer, green foods, and cereal drinks
