The newest watersports shop in Kailua is as committed to community and sustainability as it is to having a great time in the ocean. “Our goal is not only to get people on the water and have fun, but also to educate them about the wildlife they’ll encounter and how to protect what makes this place so special,” explains Joey Gallagher, cofounder of Sun and Salt Adventures Hawaii. “This is something we don't take lightly and our guests know it. They have a tendency of coming back with trash they found out on the beach.”

Joey and co-founder Zander Kempf both have a passion for watersports and adventure. Surfing, kiting, foiling, whenever they aren’t working, it’s likely they’re in the water in some capacity. “It might be cliché, but when I’m on the water, the worries of the world just disappear,” Joey says. “There’s not much better than having a guest come back to the shop, sun beaten and salty, their face glowing as they talk about the amazing experience they had. Giving people the opportunity to feel that is the best part of this business.”

Zander remembers a guest who's lived on O‘ahu her entire life, but never been to the Mokulua Islands. “She couldn’t believe she’d missed out on that experience for so long and is now a regular customer,” he says. “Things like that inspire us to tailor our services to what guests need and want.”

Sun and Salt offers a variety of kayak tours, SUP and kayak lessons, and rentals of items that range from kayaks to snorkels, beach chairs, coolers and umbrellas. Zander and

to Kailua

Joey want Kailua to know that Sun and Salt is here for the community. They recently launched a kama‘āina membership program, inspired by that guest who went to the Mokuluas for the first time. For a monthly fee, members will have unlimited usage of rental items, with friends and family perks included.

Buying all of this equipment, for one person or a family, is pricey and requires a significant amount of storage space. The membership program is a convenient, affordable

option for kama‘āina who want to enjoy ocean adventures without the commitment of buying, maintaining and storing boards, paddles and kayaks. Giving customers access to the ocean and adventures on the water, while teaching and inspiring them to keep the water and coastline clean is what Joey calls “practical sustainability.” While Sun and Salt continues to educate every guest that comes through, they also support local organizations focused on conservation, as well as beach and wildlife clean ups. They’ve partnered with the Kailua Chamber of Commerce to host networking pau hana events, and are excited to host more community events in 2023. Be on the lookout for monthly art shows, featuring local artists, live music, entertainment and food trucks.

“We’ve definitely faced challenges, but we’ve gotten to a great point where we can provide the best guest experience while also protecting the community and the place we love,” says Joey. “We’re excited to see how this journey evolves!”

As the sun sets on 2022, there’s a lot to celebrate. Amazing small, local businesses serve our community. The options we have to support local are truly abundant.

Kailua’s small, family-owned shops, restaurants, childcare, senior care, home, lawn and pool services, beauty and wellness specialists, fitness centers and activity offerings just scratch the surface. Our local businesses are all worth checking out. We encourage you to shop local as often as you can this holiday season. Running a small business comes with many challenges, but the business owners we work with agree that serving their friends, neighbors and community is one of the biggest rewards. We invite you to read about the businesses featured in these pages. Whether you’re looking for a great meal, the perfect gift, or something fun for the family, it’s all right here. “Let’s grab a cup of coffee!” The suggestion is thrown out every day for a variety of reasons. Old and new friends getting together, colleagues meeting to discuss business, a first date suggestion. The simple act of having a cup of coffee brings people together. Even that morning cup of coffee brings roommates, couples and families together. It’s a part of daily life, a ritual, a tradition.

That is one reason Brian and Lindsey Burik, owners of Tradition Coffee Roasters, are so passionate about producing premium coffee.

Brian was born and raised in Queens, NY, and served as a firefighter in New York City, retiring from FDNY as a Lieutenant after more than 20 years of service. No matter which firehouse he was in, the crew always got together at the kitchen table, drinking coffee.

“The aroma of coffee brewing always brought us together,” he says. “We’d laugh and talk about everything. Sometimes we’d agree, sometimes not but, in large part that’s how we got to know each other. And when the alarm sounded for a fire, we headed out together as one team.”

When it comes to coffee, the focus at Tradition is quality and consistency. “Our goal is to roast and serve specialty grade coffee that is good to the earth and good to the people that participate in the coffee seed lifecycle,” Lindsey explains. “We are meticulous in the green coffee beans we select. We seek out farmers with certifications like Organic, Rainforest Alliance, Fair Trade, Smithsonian Bird Friendly, and Women Owned. By roasting in small batches, we can showcase the flavors of the coffee and ensure the freshest product possible.”

Lindsey, whose mother grew up in Kailua, has wonderful memories of vacations here. After Brian retired from the FDNY, they moved to Kailua with their two daughters. After the move, Lindsey and Brian began roasting from home, trying to create the

perfect cup of coffee. It soon became a bigger operation than they could have anticipated.

Tradition Coffee Roasters moved into Kapa‘a Industrial at the beginning of 2022. In this larger commercial space, they do wholesale roasting for cafes, restaurants and hotels, while offering a variety of roasts to retail customers, and a fun spot to enjoy an amazing latte!

Tours, roasting classes, coffee immersion and cupping classes are all available as well. Get a behind the scenes look while learning about how a coffee bean gets from the farm to the roaster, the variables that impact the bean, the spectrum of flavors that a roaster can make and how the flavors and aromas are created, different ways to brew the beans, and enjoy a tasting. Taking a tour is educational, eye-opening, and demonstrates the passion everyone here has for their craft.

Tradition Coffee Roasters is warm and inviting by design. You’re welcome to look around, ask questions, order a cup of coffee and relax. Customers will find signature roasts available for purchase, including the Aloha Blend, Firehouse Blend, 100% Ka‘ū, 100% Kona, and the newly released dark blend Lava Legacy. There are monthly specialty roasts and both kama‘āina and visitors can sign up for a monthly coffee subscription to have the limited roasts shipped to their door.

The roastery has started hosting regular events as well. On Saturdays, they partner with other small businesses to offer events like pottery and yoga, which also include a coffee lesson or tasting. And Fridays have turned into Food Truck Friday, showcasing a rotating lineup of amazing local food trucks.

“Brian and I are always here,” Lindsey says. “We love meeting people, we love talking story, and we look forward to introducing more people to our roastery and the coffee we’re creating!”

Give Yourself the Gift of Home Ownership

Celebrating almost two decades in Kailua, HG Mortgage is experienced and knowledgeable about home financing in Hawai‘i. The team is committed to helping clients through every step of the mortgage process, whether that means a first home purchase or an investment property. HG Mortgage will also review a current mortgage to see if refinancing could help save a homeowner money.

Branch manager Pam Davis wants people to know the options available to them and encourages giving yourself the gift of home ownership this holiday season. “If you’re currently renting a home, why keep paying someone else’s mortgage?” she says. “Not sure if you’re qualified to purchase your dream home? Call us and find out.” If home ownership is a future goal, Pam and the team can get you on the path so you’re ready when the time is right.

“Everyone and every situation is different,“ she explains. “We’ll work with you, present your options, and identify the ones that best fit your needs. Speak with a team member, find out what’s available to you, or review your current mortgage at no cost,”

Helping families move into their Hawai‘i homes continues to keep Pam excited. “We love working with families who have called Kailua home for generations,” she says. “We also have Mortgage Loan Officers who have served our country in the military, are familiar with the sacrifices these families make, and the mortgage options specific to their needs.” Whatever a client’s background or needs, HG Mortgage is here to help.

“We love living and working in Kailua,” she says. “Kailua is our home, but we are able to do mortgages across the state. Call us to set up a phone appointment to discuss getting you into your Hawai‘i dream home.”

Makes A Splash with Kai Lani Pools

Swimming pools and spas are wonderful to have in any home, but sometimes they become a hassle or, even worse, a liability. That’s where Kai Lani Pools, a Kailua based pool and spa service company, can be your best asset. Kai Lani Pools provides weekly pool service, as well as repairs and upgrades. "We’ve seen major strides to increase the efficiency of pool equipment in recent years. One example is new variable speed pumps that have reduced electrical consumption by 75 percent,” says owner Nick Youngleson. “We specialize in upgrading pool pumps to the most energy efficient option available, saving our customers around $1,000 annually."

As a Nationally Certified Pool Inspector, Kai Lani Pools also does inspections for home buyers. “On most home purchases we identify three to five issues that will either require a credit to the buyer or a repair,” Nick

explains. “Pool electrical issues and unbalanced pool water are the most common issues we run into. This is something that is often overlooked by home inspectors”

In addition to servicing pools, the company is also O‘ahu’s number one hot tub repair specialist. Kai Lani Pools is the warranty station for almost all brands sold on the island, including Jacuzzi, Watkins Hotspring, Bullfrog Spas, Strong Spa and Master Spas. “That means that no matter who you buy a hot tub or spa from, we will always be able to repair or warranty your tub,” explains Nick.

Nick and his team pride themselves on providing professional, on-time service so all their customers have to worry about is enjoying their pool or spa. If you are in need of pool or spa maintenance, new equipment or a repair, give Kai Lani Pools a call for a free onsite estimate.

Rapid Response to Fire & Water Damage in Kailua

When disaster strikes a home, it’s usually a “worst nightmare”situation. The best thing anyone can do is get help immediately. Next on the priority list is finding a team that truly cares about getting your home – and your life –back to normal. Fortunately, ServiceMaster Fire & Water Restoration checks those boxes.

Located at Kapa‘a Industrial Park, the team is certified, trained, and ready to respond to your calls 24 hours a day.

“No one wants to make a call because there’s been a water or fire emergency,” explains owner Jim Conroy. “We understand the upheaval something like this can cause. It’s our priority to make the clean-up and restoration process as quick and painless for you as possible.”

ServiceMaster Restore has been around for over 80 years. The company is a “Preferred

Service Provider” for many insurance companies like State Farm and Allstate, and because Jim and his team are located in Kailua, they are able to get to a location on the Windward side in minutes!

“When you’re dealing with a water emergency, the sooner we get there, the better,” Jim explains. “We suggest you call us immediately.

Cleaning up the aftermath of a leak or flood, mitigating the damage should be your first concern. If you call me directly, I can get to you right away, which can save a lot of time and money.”

In addition to water cleanup, Jim’s team does fire, smoke, mold, odor, hoarding, and trauma cleanup. They do, and have always done, disinfecting with every service they provide, and now for COVID 19 as well. They have the training, experience and equipment to do each job right.

Making Great Memories … Every Day for 20 Years!

“‘Make good memories today.‘ That’s always been our goal,” says Jojo Youngs, owner of Senior Options. This year, the company celebrated 20 years in business, offering ‘ohana-style care for aging individuals and couples who want to stay in their own homes.

During the holiday and Christmas season, the Senior Options team puts even more emphasis on spending quality time and making good memories today. “At the end of the day,” says Jojo, “time is really the only gift that matters.”

The holidays can be especially hard on kūpuna. They may no longer have friends and family to rely on, they may not be able to leave the house or move around like they used to. Part of the care that Senor Options provides is coming up with creative ways to

make sure their clients are able to experience the holiday traditions that they love. They’ll take them on a drive to see lights and decorations, put up the tree and decorate their home, bake Christmas goodies, help them write letters to loved ones, even sing carols and watch holiday movies!

Jojo and her team take great pride in providing the best care possible for every client, treating each as they would members of their ‘ohana. They work with families to create a plan that fits their specific needs. They aim to keep kūpuna as independent as possible, for as long as possible, and adjust care as needs change.

Making good memories and cherishing the precious moments together has been the guiding principle at Senior Options for two decades, cherished by all who have felt that care.
