Holistic Health Care for the Whole Family While in her early 20s, Dr. Cara Poppas damaged her neck and spine in a car accident that left her body in chronic pain. After getting nowhere with conventional medicine, a friend recommended she try a chiropractor to find some relief. This pressure created a flat spot in his skull and was pushing his brain forward, creating a bulge in his right skull suture,” explains Dr. Cara. “After one gentle adjustment, he napped on the floor in the office, and now breastfeeds from both sides, making life much easier for mom.”

Having experienced chronic pain herself, Dr. Cara understands and emphasizes that healing comes from within and that her chiropractic care facilitates the body’s innate healing potential. An Unlikely Match

Last year, a couple of Kailua-based businesses, ‘Aikahi Aloha Coin & Collectibles and Aloha Tattoo, opened a shored space at Hilton Hawaiian Village. What may seem like very different businesses with very different clientele experienced success almost immediately. Here, Paul Vierling, owner of ‘Aikahi Aloha Coin, and Tim Goodrich, owner of Aloha Tattoo, open up about their individual businesses and how this partnership works.

TG: I love making pictures. I’ve always had a passion for drawing. Tattooing came very naturally to me.

How has your business changed over the last two years?

Tim Goodrich

How long have you been in business?

Paul Vierling: I’ve been in business for 40+ years. I took over ‘Aikahi Aloha Coin about 15 years ago.

Tim Goodrich: I have been tattooing in Hawai‘i since 1995. I bought Aloha Tattoo in 2008.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

PV: I enjoy helping people. In this business, I identify the value of items and help them decide what to do with them. Pass them down in their estate, consign them or sell them.

PV: It’s gotten substantially busier.

People have gotten more uncertain about the future, so they’ve started to change or increase their financial instruments, which includes investing in gold and silver.

TG: For me, business hasn’t changed too much.

It’s been a year since you’ve been open and sharing a space at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. What led to this expansion?

PV: I was approached by someone associated with HHV and given the opportunity to open a pop-up retail shop. It was supposed to last for 3 months, but I realized I could make it work long term.

How did you two become business partners?

PV: Signing a multi-year lease at HHV was less of a risk if I had someone else come in with me. Some of Tim’s artists were customers, so

that’s how we met. I approached him with the idea of sharing this space and he said yes immediately.

TG: I’ve always wanted to be in Waikīkī. I love surfing the south swell. The sun is always shining.

There’s a ton of foot traffic. Paul presented the opportunity and I jumped at it. Paul and I do very well whenever we join forces.

He is an awesome mentor.

Are you surprised by the success you’ve experienced thus far?

PV: I’m very pleasantly surprised.

We were optimistic that it would go well, but the fact that we’ve been so successful, so quickly, has been a surprise.

TG: I’m not surprised at our success. We’re an unstoppable team.

What are your plans for the future?

Celeste has a strong background in the fitness world. She grew up as a professional dancer and became an International Teacher Trainer of Barre.

Saving Lives Through Organ & Tissue Donation The need for organ donation is great. Currently there are 364 people on Hawai‘i’s waiting list in need of a life-saving kidney, pancreas or liver. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that the need for organs is growing almost twice as fast as the supply. Nationally an estimated 18 people die every day waiting for an organ. More than 1 million tissue transplants are performed each year, and the need for tissue continues to rise.

Organ donors like Brandon Lodge are true heroes.

Brandon saved three lives in Hawai‘i as a kidney and liver donor. He gave sight to two others as an eye donor.

He donated bones to an unknown number of recipients and as a tissue donor, his saphenous veins and heart valves went on to restore even more lives. Brandon’s simple act of kindness so clearly demonstrated his belief that life is worth giving.

Starting a New Chapter

Global Village closed its doors earlier this year, ending a 20+ year span with a storefront in Kailua.

But owners Dawn Ravelo, Debbie Ah Chick-Hopkins, and their mom Sharrie AhChick haven’t closed up shop for good. They’re all still in Kailua and moving their retail store online.

“It feels like we’re going back to our roots in a way,”

for making jewelry, having done it throughout college for fun. Despite not having the business experience, they decided it was now or never. “At that time, our husbands were in grad school and we didn’t have kids yet,” Dawn remembers.

“We just went for it and figured everything out along the way.”

They made an effort to source products like that.

Over the years, Global Village has experienced many transitions. In 2010, they made a big decision to stop carrying beads.

“A bead business requires a lot of time and effort,” explains Debbie. “At that time, beads and supplies were available at other stores in Kailua.

We were growing and had a lot to manage. We just couldn’t handle the bead side of the business anymore.”

Another big transition they worked through was the growth of social media and a shift to the digital marketplace. Dawn and Debbie point out the technology available now that wasn’t available when they started

and how very few retailers today start out with a physical location.

The new generation is starting online or on social media and growing from there.

Now that they’ve started this new chapter, Dawn, Debbie and Sharrie are focused on getting back to their core products and branding. They’re doing graphic tees, hats and jewelry, which are available online and when they’re set up at Aloha Home Market.

They remain passionate about giving back to the community, supporting local, and being a Kailua business.

Once again, they’re figuring it out as they go, but enjoying the process.

“There’s a lot that goes into having a physical location.

You’re managing employees, inventory, the whole space,” says Debbie. “We’re able to enjoy our town right now, which is something we haven’t been able to do for a long time. We’re excited to experience Kailua in a new way, connect with the community, and continue to be involved moving forward.

Mid-Pacific Country Club Celebrating it’s History and Longstanding Traditions

On May 5, 1926 Mid-Pacific Country Club manifested in the small charming windward town of Kailua.

This once ki’awe-covered 202 acres of land persuaded Lanikai developer, Charles Frazier and 65 businessmen to create an 18 Hole Champion Golf Course.

An Out of this World Experience

Nick Bradley founded Stargazers of Hawai‘i to bring the universe to life. Using his mobile telescope, Nick shows guests what can be seen in the night sky.

From constellations to planets to star clusters, the excitement of looking into the night sky never goes away.

Nick’s interest in the stars started in middle school when he read a book about constellations. He could only make out the brightest stars from the apartment where he lived in Honolulu, but he was hooked and hungry to see more. He visited the planetarium at Bishop Museum and joined the Hawaiian Astronomical Society, a local astronomy club which he’s been a member of for over 20 years.

He graduated from UH Mānoa with a degree in electrical engineering and began a career in the construction industry. He went up in the ranks, eventually becoming a Project Manager and Estimator for general and electrical contractors but his passion for astronomy never went away. He continued studying

the stars and constellations and looking into the sky.

In 2019 Nick established Stargazers of Hawai‘i to share his knowledge with anyone else interested in the stars and what can be seen from earth.

Homeschool and other educational groups, corporate groups, families, friends, couples and double dates have all viewed the night sky with Nick.
