Life in the time of COVID-19 has been full of challenges, but hopefully you’ve found a few (maybe many) reasons to be grateful. I’d certainly rather be required to “stay at home” in Kailua than anywhere else!

Without a doubt, Kailua is a lovely place, but what makes our town truly beautiful are the people that form this amazing community.

We treat each other like ‘ohana, we support one other, care about our neighbors, and step up when someone’s in need. We’ve seen that repeatedly as individuals and businesses donated their time, talents and resources to fill a variety of needs, from masks and hand sanitizer to meals and online classes … It’s not surprising, but it’s incredible nonetheless!

As we went to press, it was unclear when businesses would start opening their doors again and life in general start going back to “normal.” By the time you’re reading this, I hope that process has already begun.

As of the beginning of 2020, both of the Maui Tacos O‘ahu locations are under new ownership! Mason and Kelly Cummings are excited to bring new life into both the Kailua and Pearl Highlands restaurants by getting back to what made Maui Tacos so popular in the early days.

“Maui Tacos started as a small beach shack, giving aloha to everyone who ate there,” Mason explains. “We want to bring back the old vibe and aloha and really reconnect with our customers and the community.”

What started on Maui in 1993 has grown into 7 locations across Hawai‘i. Mason and his family, who have owned a home in Kailua for years, are excited to bring the spirit of the original company back to the O‘ahu restaurants. “We are really focused on improving the quality of our product,” he says, “as well as providing ‘‘ohana deals,’ geared towards feeding families a great meal for less.”

One of the first menu items to get a revamp was the Fish Tacos.

Now made with fresh, local, line-caught fish like Mahi-Mahi, Hebi, Ono, Kajiki, and Nairagi, the Fish Tacos marry traditional Mexican food with island ingredients. The mild, flaky fish is marinated, grilled, accompanied by the crunchy texture of locally grown cabbage, then finished with a creamy jalapeno and cilantro aioli. Guests can top their tacos with a selection of sweet and spicy salsas made from fresh pineapple, mango, tomato, and other ingredients The menu will continue to feature plates, bowls, and burritos. The Burritos and Bowls will begin to incorporate a “build your own”

concept. All of the classic Burritos and Bowls will stay on the menu for the loyal diners’ taste buds. Mason also says to keep an eye out for special items that will only be available for a short time, offering exciting, fresh options on a regular basis.

A liquor license is also in the works, so guests can look forward to enjoying signature Maui Tacos cocktails!

“We are also rolling out Family Packs or ‘Ohana Deals to feed more people for a great price,” says Mason. Options include 4 burritos with chips and salsa, 4 quesadillas with chips and salsa, and a 2 burrito + 4 taco option as well.

“The goal of all of these changes and additions,” he says, “is to increase the quality of our menu items and provide options that will be more appealing to our local customers.”

While the COVID-19 pandemic has affected Maui Tacos, just like it’s affected most local businesses, Mason is positive and excited to reopen the doors for dine-in service when the stay at home restrictions are lifted. “We’re doing the best we can right now,” he says. “We’re taking advantage of the forced closure of our dining room to make some renovations and refresh the space!” Until then, take out and delivery through BiteSquad and Door Dash is available.

Our First Response to our First Responders…Mahalo!

If someone told you one year ago that our world was going to stop and we would be living in an apocalyptic daze, it’s likely you would never have believed it. Yet, here we are today, experiencing the greatest halt in recorded history.

When the COVID-19 virus hit our world, no one realized that our everyday normal was going to change forever. No longer would professional athletes, style bloggers, movie personalities and hip hop artists be the center of attention. Instead, a brave group would rise from the rubble to the top of our hero page.

To help the community come together while practicing social distancing, Doni has partnered with Pali Lanes in Kailua Town to create “Messages of Mahalo.” On this mural, the community can write a message of gratitude, hope, healing, and inspiration.

First responders illustrate the very definition of heroism by putting their lives on the line for us every day. These nameless, faceless men and women rush to the scene of a crisis which many of us run from. In this COVID-19 pandemic, we see doctors, nurses, emergency technicians, firefighters, and police officers stay true to their calling of helping people.

Doni Chong found a simple way to show her appreciation by sewing face masks.

She gave them away to those in her community of Kailua, but also to people living and working in Salt Lake, Kāne‘ohe, even in Texas. “Giving should not be about geting a photo opportunity to promote yourself,” she says. “It’s about a proven track record of unselfish action. A true heart of a servant shows consistent authenticity.“ When her posts on social media were shared, Doni was approached by Jennifer, the wife of a firefighter. Jennifer asked how many masks could quickly be sewn for her husband and the crew. Doni immediately started sewing masks for the firefighters and by the next morning, masks were available for those who came in on their morning shift.

Doni is a hopeful candidate for State House Representative 51 - Kailua, Lanikai and Waimānalo. After raising her four children (ages 14, 16, 26 and 29) she wanted to find another way to stay involved. With over 30 years of experience in the for-profit, nonprofit, community and entrepreneur sectors, she believes a balanced perspective is needed at the legislature.

While nodding to those who presently serve in government, Doni believes we cannot continue with the same methodology that has been in place in our state. “I am a citizen
