Beyond the Mirror will officially open on December 3, taking over the space that The Black Cat Salon has occupied for the last number of years. Beyond the Mirror will be absorbing a number of stylists and are already taking appointments. “We are excited that our family of stylists is growing,” says Gizell Ancheta,“and that our expansion will continue to serve our community in Kailua.” Gizell is co-owner of The Fix with Matt Gallagher, and the duo has continued their partnership through Beyond the Mirror. The stylists who will be transitioning are currently taking appointments at The Fix Kailua until Beyond the Mirror opens its doors. They will continue to hone their skills and serve clients.

Landscapers have already cleared this access path as one of the first projects being taken on at the property, demonstrating the commitment Love Hawaii has to making a positive contribution to the community and of truly listening and responding to the needs and concerns of those who live, work and play in Kailua every day. Shop Small in Kailua This Holiday Season
This holiday season, Kailua has a few fun, new events to look forward to. During these shopping and socializing events, local Kailua businesses will offer special deals and promotions, a festive atmosphere, and amazing incentives to shop local. Put a dent in that Christmas gift list, splurge on something for yourself, and get into the holiday spirit while shopping with friends and neighbors during Shop Small Kailua and Holiday Sip & Shop events. The weekend after Thanksgiving, Nov. 29-31 will be the first ever Shop Small Kailua event! During this holiday shopping kick-off, a

Shop Small Kailua brings the businesses together, creating a sense of community among our small businesses and gives residents an incentive to check out what’s happening in Kailua Town. Saturday, Nov.30, is the main event. The Shop Small Hawaii tent will be up in Kailua Town with information about participating businesses, events, offerings, and possible giveaways. Market History
Kalapawai Market, at the entrance to Kailua Beach Park, has been a regular part of life for Kailua and Lanikai residents for what seems like forever. It’s a landmark; seems like it’s always been there. And, if we’re talking modern day Kailua, it’s pretty true. Longtime Kailua residents and many of the regular customers grew up with “the market.” Like Kailua Town, it’s gone through phases and evolutions to become the Kalapawai we know today, offering everything from coffee and pastries to deli items, to “small kine” grocery items,
the floors or do odd jobs for payment. As those same kids grew up and started working, money was still tight for many of them. Elsie kept a tab for everyone on flaps she tore off of cigarette boxes. Every two weeks when they got paid, they’d pay off their tabs for beer, cigarettes, fish bait and anything else. Then they’d start a new one a few days later. One of those kids, who is now retired and still lives in Kailua, said, “The Wongs were saints. They kept us going. When Elsie passed away, everyone gathered behind the market to remember her. The running joke was ‘Eh, you pay your tab yet?’”

He gradually upgraded, renovated, and added new items that served both Kailua residents and beach visitors. The green represented an iconic plantation house, matching the style and aesthetic Don wanted to achieve. They added coffee and became the first coffee shop in Kailua. Then they became the first coffee shop with an espresso machine in town. A couple years later, they added the small wine section. A couple years after that they added the deli.
