How to Be Many in Many Places?

Een vogel-theater in wording In de zomer van 2022 gaan de verbouwingswerken in het Kaaitheater van start. Ze zullen minstens twee jaar duren. Daarom brengen we de komende jaren onze activiteiten deels onder bij andere theaters in en om Brussel — een verhuizing die veel vragen met zich meebrengt. Wat betekent het voor een theater om niet meer op haar eigen plek in de stad aanwezig te zijn? Wat kunnen we leren van het samenwerken in en met andere huizen? Wat zijn de gevolgen voor het programma, de kunstenaars en het publiek als Kaaitheater niet langer een (kunsten)‘centrum’ is waar iedereen naartoe trekt, maar zichzelf moet verplaatsen en aanpassen?

En wat betekent deze kleine verandering in het licht van de gebeurtenissen in de rest van de wereld? Een minieme verschuiving temidden van voortdurende globale migratiestromen. Een tijdelijke opschorting temidden van een wereld die uit elkaar valt.

Andere verhalen mogelijk maken Kunnen deze bewegingen langs verschillende ‘territoria’ en binnen telkens andere muren, ons mogelijkheden doen ontdekken om de stad anders te benaderen? Laat de gastvrijheid van andere organisaties — en het uitnodigen van kunstenaars en publiek bij hen — ons toe om op een andere manier over gastvrijheid na te denken? Kan deze verandering van perspectief ons leren om de dingen anders te zien?

Sinds twee jaar onderzoekt het Kaaitheater samen met CrossTalks/ VUB en een aantal kunstenaars en theoretici het ‘more than human’ (meer dan menselijk) perspectief. En hoewel psychologe en filosofe Vinciane Despret schrijft dat het oneerlijk is om aan dieren te vragen menselijke problemen op te lossen, zijn we het met haar eens wanneer ze schrijft dat “belangstelling hebben voor hoe andere soorten omgaan met territorium, stelt onze verbeelding open voor andere manieren van denken. [...] en maakt andere verhalen mogelijk.” 1 Omdat we het essentieel vinden om vandaag nieuwe verhalen te verzinnen, laten we ons inspireren door artistieke praktijken die nieuwe ruimte scheppen en die ons raken. We vergroten ons perspectief, we ‘doen alsof’ en worden ‘more than human’.

Een vogel-theater worden.

Een (science) fictieverhaal Stel je een andere realiteit of toekomst voor waarin theaters kunnen muteren en hybridiseren met andere soorten en zich gaan gedragen als vogels: vogeltheaters.

Het vogeltheater van ons verhaal, Kaaitheater, moet eind juni haar nest verlaten. Ze heeft dan niet langer een eigen uniek, afgebakend territorium maar moet tijdelijk beroep doen op de gastvrijheid van andere vogeltheaters, en hun territorium delen. Het boek van Vinciane Despret, Habiter en Oiseau (Actes Sud, 2019), kan ons helpen om de wereld anders te bewonen en vorm te geven.

Net als alle vogels en theaters, heeft het vogeltheater een eigen territorium. Maar dit territorium gaat het vogeltheater niet vooraf, het ontstaat pas met de komst van het vogeltheater en haar lied of programma: een compositie aan voorstellingen.

Het vogel-theater zingt haar territorium. Haar lied materialiseert een gebied, het creëert een landschap. Daarom zingt het vogeltheater hier anders dan daar. Haar lied verandert van plek tot plek. Als het vogeltheater van territorium wisselt, verandert ook haar programmazang.

Leven is in de eerste plaats samenleven Het territorium is een rustplek waar het vogeltheater kan zingen, een programma kan presenteren en een publiek kan ontvangen. Maar het is meer dan dat.

Belangrijk is dat deze rustige plek omgeven wordt door buren. Want, zoals Vinciane Despret zegt, er is geen manier van leven die niet in de eerste plaats “samenleven” is. Vogels, theaters en ook vogeltheaters duwen tegen elkaar aan en stellen grenzen aan hun territorium. Op deze grensgebieden creëren ze ruimte waar iets gebeurt en installeren ze een periferie.

De komst van een nieuwe bewoner (Kaaitheater) verandert de omgeving van de andere vogeltheaters, wat op het eerste gezicht voor verstoring kan zorgen. Een vogeltheater op zoek naar nieuwe territoria wordt soms weggeduwd. Maar we leren van Vinciane Despret dat het ook — en vaker dan we denken — anders kan. Het territorium waarvan men dacht dat het ondeelbaar was, opent zich en maakt ruimte voor de nieuwe aanwezigheid.

Een gezamenlijke partituur creëren Waar vogeltheaters territorium delen, verandert hun programmalied. Ze leren de structuur van elkaars zang en geluidsspectrum. Ze delen een klankruimte en beginnen samen te zingen. Ze maken samen een nieuwe partituur.

Want voor vogels, theaters en vogeltheaters, betekent het vormen van een territorium ook het omgaan met bestaande machten, en deze in acht nemen.

Vanaf september 2022 zal Kaaitheater minstens twee jaar lang een eigen programma maken in de Kaaistudio’s en in De Kriekelaar, en strijken we als een vogeltheater neer in het territorium van andere theaters. We leren er hoe anderen aandacht schenken en hoe zij met hun lied het landschap om hen heen vormgeven.

We zullen hun lied leren en misschien leren zij ook het onze. Samen proberen we een gemeenschappelijke partituur te schrijven. Zo creëren we nieuwe territoria waar we in koor kunnen zingen.

En aan het einde van het verhaal hopen we dat ons theater-inbeweging niet het enige is dat kan hybridiseren, vogel kan worden en elders een toevluchtsoord kan vinden. We hopen dat in de stad, de wereld, en overal waar er muren zijn gemaakt van huid die ademen,2 gebieden opengaan om mensen — of instellingen — op doorreis te verwelkomen. En dat uit het samengaan van hun lied nieuwe landschappen ontstaan.

Devenir un oiseau-theatre À partir de l’été 2022, Le Kaaitheaer sera en travaux et ses activités seront en partie hébergées par d’autres théâtres à Bruxelles et à la périphérie. Ce déplacement, qui devrait durer deux ans au moins, apporte avec lui de nombreuses questions : Qu’est ce que cela signifie pour un théâtre, de ne plus se trouver à la place qui lui a été assignée dans la ville ? Que va-t-il pouvoir apprendre en partageant les conditions de travail d’autres lieux ? En n’étant plus un ‘centre’ (d’art) vers lequel tous.te.s se déplacent mais en devant à son tour se déplacer et s’adapter, quel impact ceci aura t-il sur son programme, les artistes, les publics ?

Et comment ce petit changement vient-il s’inscrire dans le reste du monde qui change aussi ? Un infime déplacement au milieu d’un flot continu de migrations. Une suspension temporaire au milieu d’un monde qui s’effondre.

Rendre possible d’autres histoires Se pourrait-il que ces changements de murs, ce déplacement de territoire, nous offrent malgré tout, aussi, des opportunités pour approcher la ville différemment ? Est-ce que le fait d’être accueilli dans d’autres organisations — pour, à notre tour, y inviter des artistes et du public — nous permettrait de penser l’hospitalité de façon différente ? Est-ce que ce changement de perspective nous ferait envisager les choses autrement ?

Cela fait deux ans maintenant que le Kaaitheater se penche avec CrossTalks/VUB et de nombreu·se·s artistes et théoricien·nes·s sur une pensée qui serait ‘more than human’ (plus qu’humaine). Et bien que la psychologue et philosophe Vinciane Despret écrit qu’il est injuste de demander aux animaux de résoudre les problèmes des humains — nous pensons cependant avec elle que “ s’intéresser à comment d’autres espèces font territoire, c’est nous ouvrir l’imagination à d’autres façons de penser. [...] C’est rendre possible d’autres histoires.” 1 Alors, parce que nous pensons qu’il est essentiel, aujourd’hui, d’inventer de nouvelles histoires, nous nous laissons inspirer par des pratiques artistiques qui créent des espaces nouveaux et nous déplacent. Nous élargissons nos perspectives, nous faisons ‘ comme si ’, et devenons ‘ plus qu’humain ’.

Devenir un oiseau-théâtre.

Une (science-)fiction Imaginons que dans une autre réalité possible, ou dans le futur, les théâtres pourraient muter, s’hybrider avec d’autres espèces et devenir, par exemple, comme des oiseaux. Des oiseaux-théâtres.

L’oiseau-théatre de notre histoire, le Kaaitheater, devra quitter son nid à la fin juin. Il n’aura bientôt plus son propre territoire, unique et défini. Il devra demander l’hospitalité temporaire à d’autres oiseaux-théâtres, et partager leur territoire. Le livre de Vinciane Despret, Habiter en Oiseau (Actes Sud, 2019), pourra alors nous guider afin que nous apprenions d’autres manières d’habiter, donc de faire monde.

On y apprendra que l’oiseau-théâtre,comme les oiseaux et les théâtres, a un territoire. Mais que ce territoire ne préexiste pas à l’oiseau-théâtre. Le territoire apparaît avec celui-ci et plus particulièrement avec son chant que l’on appelle aussi son programme : un ensemble de spectacles-notes.

L’oiseau-théâtre chante son territoire. Son chant matérialise un territoire, il fait apparaître un paysage. C’est pourquoi, l’oiseau-théâtre ne chante pas de la même façon ici ou là. Son chant se modifie selon l’endroit où il se trouve. Quand le théâtre-oiseau change de territoire, son chant-programme, se modifie également.

Faire partition commune Et ce qu’il se passe, alors, c’est que, en faisant territoire commun, les oiseauxthéâtres modifient leur chant-programme. Ils apprennent la structure du chant et du spectre sonore de l’autre. Ensemble, ils se partagent l’espace sonore, ils font choeur. Ils créent une nouvelle partition.

Parce que pour les oiseaux et les théâtres et aussi les oiseaux-théâtres, faire un territoire c’est composer avec des puissances existantes, et les honorer. À partir de septembre 2022, et pour au moins deux ans, le Kaaitheater développera son propre programme dans les Kaaistudio’s et dans le Kriekelaar, mais il deviendra aussi un oiseau-théâtre qui viendra nicher au creux du territoire d’autres oiseaux-théâtres. Avec ce changement, nous apprendrons à faire attention à comment les autres font attention, à comment ils chantent le paysage qui les entourent et qui deviendra aussi, momentanément, le nôtre.

Nous apprendrons leurs chants et peut-être qu’ils pourront apprendre le nôtre et ensemble nous essayerons de faire partition commune. Nous essayerons de créer de nouveaux territoires d’où chanter-programmer en chœur.

Et à la fin de l’histoire, ce que l’on espère, ce que notre théâtre en déplacement ne soit pas le seul à pouvoir s’hybrider, à devenir un peu oiseau et à trouver refuge ailleurs. Ce qu’on espère, c’est que dans la ville, dans le monde, partout où il y a des murs qui sont fait de peau et qui respirent,2 des territoires puissent s’ouvrir pour accueillir des gens (ou des institutions) en transit et que de leurs chants croisés puisse émerger de nouveaux paysages.

Habiter, c’est d’abord cohabiter On apprendra ensuite que le territoire des oiseaux-théâtres est une chose changeante.

Ce qui importe, c’est que ce lieu calme soit entouré de voisins. Car, comme le dit Vinciane Despret, il n’y a aucune manière d’habiter qui ne soit d’abord et avant tout ‘cohabiter’. Les oiseaux, les théâtres et aussi les oiseauxthéâtres se poussent les uns contre les autres pour se donner une périphérie,14 pour créer une frontière à leur territoire et ainsi entrer en contact avec d’autres, bref créer un endroit où il se passe des choses.

Et c’est justement ce que notre oiseau-théâtre vient faire. Cette arrivée d’un nouvel occupant (Le Kaaitheater) vient transformer le milieu dans lequel les autres oiseaux-théâtres vivaient jusqu’alors et affecter leur comportement. Et l’on pourrait penser, à première vue, que ce changement dérange.

Cependant, ce que nous apprenons par le biais de Vinciane Despret, c’est que s’il arrive qu’un oiseau-théâtre en quête de nouveaux territoires soit repoussé et qu’on lui refuse le droit d’apparaître dans celui de quelqu’un d’autre, il arrive parfois — et plus souvent qu’on ne le pense — que la cohabitation se passe autrement. Le territoire que l’on pensait être indivisible, impartageable, s’ouvre et crée alors de la place pour le nouvel arrivant.

Becoming a Bird Theatre From the summer of 2022 onwards, the new Kaaitheater will be under construction and its activities will be partly hosted by other theatres in and around Brussels. This move, which is expected to last at least two years, brings with it many questions. What does it mean for a theatre to not be able to use its normal residence in a city? What will it learn by sharing the working conditions of other places? No longer being a ‘centre’ (of art) that everyone is gravitating towards but itself having to move, what impact will this have on its programme, the artists, the audiences?

How does this small adjustment fit into the rest of the world, which is also changing? A tiny shift in a continuous stream of migration. A temporary suspension in the middle of a collapsing world.

Making other stories possible

Could it be that these changes of walls, this displacement of territory, also offer us opportunities to approach the city in a different way? Would being hosted in other organisations — and in turn inviting artists and audiences — allow us to think about being a host in another way? Would this change in perspective allow us to see things differently?

For two years now, Kaaitheater has been working with CrossTalks/ VUB and numerous artists and theoreticians on a ‘more than human’ approach.

Although psychologist and philosopher Vinciane Despret writes that it is unfair to ask animals to solve human problems, we agree with her that “to be interested in how other species handle territory is to open our imagination to other ways of thinking. [...] It is making other stories possible.”1 So, because we believe that it is essential today to invent new stories, we are inspired by artistic practices that create new spaces and move us. We broaden our perspectives, we ‘pretend’, and become ‘more than human’.

Becoming a bird theatre: a (science) fiction

Imagine that in another possible reality, or in the future, theatres could mutate, hybridize with other species, and become, for example, like birds. Bird theatres.

The bird theatre in our story, Kaaitheater, will have to leave its nest at the end of June. It will soon no longer have its own unique and defined territory.

It will have to ask for temporary hospitality from other bird theatres, and share their territory. Vinciane Despret’s book, Habiter en Oiseau (Actes Sud, 2019), can then help us learn other ways to inhabit, and therefore to make the world.

The bird theatre, just like birds and theatres, has a territory. But this territory does not pre-date the bird theatre. The territory is created by the bird theatre itself, it’s created by its song or programme: a composition of performances.

The bird theatre sings its territory. Its song makes a territory materialise, it makes a landscape appear. This is why the bird theatre does not sing in the same way everywhere. Its song changes depending on where it is. When the bird theatre changes its territory, its song repertoire also changes.

Living is first and foremost about living together

The territory of the bird theatres is first and foremost a place of rest from which to sing and from which to present a programme and welcome an audience. But it is never just that.

What is important is that this quiet place is surrounded by activities and neighbours. For, as Vinciane Despret says, there is no way of living that is not first and foremost “living together”. Birds, theatres and bird theatres push against each other to create a periphery, to create a boundary to their territory and thus come into contact with others, in short to create a place where things happen.

That is exactly what our bird theatre is doing. The arrival of a new occupant (Kaaitheater) changes the environment that the other theatres have inhabited until now and affects their behaviour. You might think, at first sight, that this change is disruptive. However, what we learn from Vinciane Despret is that while sometimes a bird theatre in search of new territories is turned away and denied the right to appear in someone else’s territory, sometimes — and more often than we think — the outcome is quite the opposite. The territory that was thought to be indivisible, which could not be divided, opens up and creates space for the newcomer.

What happens then is that, by making a common territory, the bird theatres modify their programme song. They learn the structure of the song and the sound spectrum of the other. Together they share the sound space, they form a choir. They create a new score.

Because for birds and theatres just as for bird theatres, making a territory means dealing with existing powers, and paying them tribute.

From September 2022, and for at least two years, Kaaitheater will develop its own programme in the Kaaistudio’s and the Kriekelaar, but it will also become a bird theatre that will nestle in other theatres’ territories. With this change, we will learn to pay attention to how others pay attention, to how they sing the landscape around them, which will also momentarily become ours.

We will learn their songs and maybe they can learn ours and together we will try to create a common score. We will try to create new territories from which to sing our programme in chorus.

At the end of the story, what we hope is that our theatre on the move is not the only one that can hybridize, become somewhat birdlike and find refuge elsewhere. What we hope is that in the city, in the world, wherever there are walls that are made of skin and breathe,2 territories can open up to welcome people (or institutions) in transit and that from their intertwined songs new landscapes can emerge.

De klimaatproblematiek mag dan wel mainstream geworden zijn, de urgentie is niet verdwenen. Hoe kunnen we op deze planeet samenleven, met respect voor elk levend wezen? Kunstenaars zijn als geen ander in staat om hun fascinatie voor deze grote vragen te vertalen naar participatieve projecten, zintuiglijke voorstellingen of indringende gesprekken.

La question du climat est peut-être devenue un sujet courant, mais l’urgence n’a néanmoins pas disparu. Comment pouvons-nous vivre ensemble sur cette planète, en respectant chaque créature vivante ? Les artistes ont cette capacité qui leur est si singulière de traduire leur fascination pour ces grandes questions en projets participatifs, en performances sensorielles ou en conversations pénétrantes.

La Fracture

In haar solo en eerste theatervoorstelling La Fracture, deelt Yasmine Yahiatene de scène met videomateriaal. De voorstelling is een onderzoek, een zoektocht naar haarzelf, naar haar verleden en vooral naar een ontcijfering van een complexe en intieme relatie — de relatie met haar vader. Het is het begin van een werk van herstel, van weerbaarheid. « Papa, tu sais quels sont les points communs entre l’Algérie et l’alcool? J’en ai trouvé trois, la honte, le tabou et le silence... » Dans son solo et son premier projet de théâtre La Fracture, Yasmine Yahiatene partage la scène avec la vidéo. Elle se lance dans une quête d’ellemême, de son passé et surtout dans le décryptage d’une relation intime et complexe, celle avec son père. En cherchant à renouer le contact avec celui-ci, elle revient sur ses origines algériennes, kabyles, sur l’alcoolisme de son père et sur les points communs entre ces deux sujets pour entamer un travail de réparation, de résilience.

In her solo and first theatre performance La Fracture, Yasmine Yahiatene shares the stage with video material. The performance is an investigation, a search for herself, for her past and above all for a decipherment of a complex and intimate relationship — the relationship with her father.

While trying to re-establish contact with him through various media, she returns to her Algerian and Kabyle roots, to her father’s alcoholism, and to the overlaps between these two subjects. It is the beginning of a work of recovery, of resilience.

Ze nam deze polyfone muziekvorm uit de 14de eeuw als uitgangspunt voor de ontwikkeling van een nieuwe danstaal. Tegenover de complexiteit en ongrijpbaarheid van het leven plaatst ze het lichaam. In al zijn kracht en vitaliteit, maar ook in zijn kwetsbaarheid en sterfelijkheid.

Geselecteerd als één van de meest belangwekkende voorstellingen van het seizoen, stond de voorstelling in het Kaaitheater tijdens Het Theaterfestival van 2011. Nu keert deze parel terug naar Brussel in de thuisbasis van Rosas in Vorst.

Pour En Atendant, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker s’est inspirée de l’Ars Subtilior. En prenant comme point de départ cette forme musicale polyphonique du XIVe siècle, elle a développé un nouveau langage de danse.

Contre la complexité et l’insaisissabilité de la vie, elle impose le corps. Dans toute sa puissance et sa vitalité, mais aussi dans sa vulnérabilité et sa mortalité. Sélectionné comme l’un des spectacles les plus importants de la saison, il a été présenté au Kaaitheater lors du festival de théâtre 2011. Cette pépite revient aujourd’hui à Bruxelles au foyer de Rosas à Forest.

For En Atendant, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker took inspiration from Ars Subtilior. Taking this 14th century polyphonic musical form as her starting point, she developed a new dance language. Against the complexity and intangibility of life, she places the body. In all its power and vitality, but also in its vulnerability and mortality. TRISTERO Fluisterbehang / Visite Guidée ‘De muren hebben oren’ zeggen we wel eens. Maar wat als ze ook zouden kunnen spreken? Voor Fluisterbehang legt Tristero de verborgen verhalen bloot, opgeslagen in de muren van de Schaarbeekse woonst in de Gallaitstraat 80. Dit herenhuis uit 1888 vormt een spannend decor, mét vluchtroute. Tijdens een geleid bezoek leg je letterlijk je oor te luisteren aan de wanden van het oude gebouw. Wie sliep er op de zolderkamer tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog? Maar ook: wat is precies een huis? Is elke woning ook een thuis? En wat willen we ten allen tijde binnenskamers houden?

On dit parfois que « les murs ont des oreilles ». Mais que se passeraitil s’ils pouvaient également parler ? Pour Fluisterbehang, Tristero découvre les histoires cachées, emmagasinées dans les murs de la demeure située au numéro 80 de la rue Gallait à Schaerbeek. Ce manoir de 1888 constitue un décor passionnant, avec une issue de secours. Lors d’une visite guidée, vous écoutez littéralement les murs de l’ancien bâtiment. Qui a dormi dans la mansarde pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale ? Mais aussi : qu’est-ce qu’une maison, exactement ? Chaque maison est-elle aussi un foyer ? THE WONDERS OF MULTILINGUALISM #3 Sinds een tijd vinden Passa Porta en Kaaitheater elkaar rond het thema meertaligheid, in al zijn wonderlijke en complexe facetten. Afgelopen mei stond de avond in het teken van het begrip ‘moedertaal’, deze herfst vindt er opnieuw een avond plaats. Het thema staat nog niet vast, maar de opzet is ondertussen bekend: centraal staat het onderlinge gesprek, aangevuld met korte artistieke interventies rondom het thema.

Passa Porta et Kaaitheater se réunissent depuis quelque temps pour discuter du multilinguisme, sous toutes ses merveilleuses et complexes facettes. La soirée de mai dernier était consacrée à la notion de « langue maternelle », et une autre se tiendra cet automne. Le thème n’a pas encore été choisi, mais la structure est déjà connue : l’accent est mis sur la conversation mutuelle, complétée par de courtes interventions artistiques autour du thème.

For some time now, Passa Porta and Kaaitheater have been meeting up to discuss multilingualism in all its wonderful and complex facets. Last May, an evening was devoted to the concept of ‘mother tongue’; this autumn, there will be another such evening. The theme has not yet been decided, but the structure is already known: the focus is on mutual discussion, supplemented by short artistic interventions around the theme.

LUCAS KATANGILA La Veste du Président Met zijn politieke solo The President’s Jacket kaart de Congolese danser, choreograaf en activist Lucas Katangila de wantoestanden in Oost-Congo aan. Gehuld in witte kledij, doopt hij zijn armen in een bad vol bloed — bloed dat er dagelijks vergoten wordt. Zijn choreografie balanceert tussen soepele, vloeiende bewegingen en een zeer berekende, soms zelfs ingehouden dans. Tot de spanning niet meer te houden is en het stuk losbarst en het geweld uitspuwt.

Avec son solo politique La Veste du Président, le danseur, chorégraphe et activiste congolais Lucas Katangila s’attaque aux exactions commises dans l’est du Congo. Vêtu de blanc, il trempe ses bras dans une baignoire remplie de sang — du sang qui y est versé chaque jour. Sa chorégraphie oscille entre des mouvements souples et fluides, et une danse très calculée, parfois même retenue. Jusqu’à ce que la tension ne puisse plus être contenue et que la pièce éclate et crache la violence.

With his political solo The President’s Jacket, Congolese dancer, choreographer and activist Lucas Katangila tackles the abuses in eastern Congo. Dressed in white, he dips his arms into a bath full of blood — blood being shed there every day. His choreography balances between supple, flowing movements and a very calculated, sometimes even restrained dance.

Until the tension can no longer be held back and the piece erupts, spitting out the violence.

La répétition ludique de plusieurs phrases et perspectives constitue une parodie du « bon sens » du monde occidental du XXIe siècle. Romance est une invitation à découvrir la reconnaissance, la répulsion et l’humour qui se créent lorsque vous autorisez une tierce personne à porter votre voix.

Lígia Soares nous fait réfléchir dans un cadre intime à la façon dont nous pensons en tant qu’individus au sein d’un groupe, en utilisant des phrases ordinaires pour générer des connexion entre elle et les membres du public.

The playful repetition of various sentences and perspectives forms a parody of the twenty-first-century Western ‘common sense’. Romance is an invitation to discover the recognition, repulsion and humor that is created when you allow someone else to be your voice. In an intimate setting, Lígia Soares makes us reflect on how we think as individuals within a group by using ordinary sentences to create connections between herself and audience members.

Dorothée Munyaneza verweeft de persoonlijke reizen van zes zwarte vrouwelijke kunstenaars uit Afrika of met Afrikaanse roots. Aan de hand van koorstukken en sculpturale elementen, en met kostuums als rode draad doorheen het stuk, belichamen de zes vrouwen een collectieve kracht die hun ontmoeting mogelijk maakt. Ze zingen, dansen en schreeuwen de herinnering aan vervlochten geschiedenissen. Deze bevrijding verenigt hen in een wereld waarin ze, met al hun woede en zachtheid, nooit zullen ophouden onafhankelijk te zijn. « Pour moi, la beauté existe dans l’insoumission ».

Dorothée Munyaneza tisse les parcours intimes de six artistes noires, africaines ou afro-descendantes. Dans ce spectacle choral et sculptural, où le costume offre un fil rouge sur le plateau, ces femmes sont habitées par une force collective qui rend leur rencontre possible. Elles dansent, chantent et clament la mémoire d’histoires mêlées. Cet affranchissement les unit dans un monde où elles ne cesseront jamais, entre colère et douceur, d’être souveraines.

Zintuiglijke cartografieën, eco-futuristische omzwervingen, beeldende kunst, archiefcollecties, spoken word en performances dienen stuk voor stuk als verbindingsmateriaal om de Brusselse archipel samen te houden.

Imaginons que Bruxelles soit un océan rempli d’îles culturelles interdépendantes, reliées par la même eau et séparées par différents modes de communication, de transmission et de production. Quels sont les points de connexion entre ces différents réseaux, comment se négocie la relation entre Saint-Josse et Watermael et entre Schaerbeek et la Grand Place? Cartographie sensible, déambulations éco-futuristes, arts visuels, collectes d’archives, spoken word et performances sont autant de matériaux réunis pour relier les îles qui composent l’archipel bruxellois.

Let us imagine Brussels as an ocean full of interdependent cultural islands, connected by the same water and separated by different modes of communication, transmission and production. De achtste letter van het alfabet, de ‘H’, is de letter waarmee Effi & Amir hun onderzoek begonnen naar het gebruik van ‘Schibboleths’. Dit zijn uitspraken of klankgevingen die iemands groepslidmaatschap bepalen op basis van dictie en tongval. In deze interactieve performance nodigen ze een beperkt publiek van 20 personen per sessie uit om samen ons stemapparaat te verkennen, dat tegelijk vertrouwd en raadselachtig is. Rondom een ronde tafel worden lijnen getrokken, geluiden gemeten en verhalen verteld over hoe de stem een grenslijn kan worden en hoe een klankverzameling een controlepost wordt.

La 8e lettre, H, est la lettre qui est à l’origine de la recherche d’Effi & Amir sur la pratique ancienne et contemporaine du « Shibboleth », soit la détermination de l’appartenance d’une personne à un groupe par une caractéristique de son élocution. Dans cette performance participative, iels invitent un public limité à 20 personnes par session, à explorer ensemble un domaine familier mais cependant parfois étranger, celui de notre appareil vocal. Autour d’une table ronde, des lignes sont tracées, des sons sont mesurés et des histoires sont racontées sur la façon dont une voix se transforme en une frontière et une collection de sons, en un point de contrôle.

The 8th letter, H, is the letter that started Effi & Amir’s research into the both ancient and contemporary practice of ‘Shibboleth’, the determination of a person’s group-belonging by a feature of their speech. In this participatory performance they invite a limited audience of 20 people per session to explore together a familiar yet sometimes alien field, that of our vocal apparatus. Around a round table, lines are drawn, sounds are measured and stories are told of how a voice becomes a border and how a collection of sounds becomes a checkpoint.

Ghost Writer and the Broken Hand Break

Drie performers draaien drie kwartier lang rond hun as — een beweging die in Sufi-ceremonies moet leiden tot een staat van religieuze euforie. In Miet Warlops versie wordt het een experiment op de fijne scheidingslijn tussen controle hebben en verliezen. Het is een mengeling van wervelende dans, voordracht en concert. Hoe kun je een evenwicht vinden tussen zelfbeheersing en devotie? Ghost Writer and the Broken Hand Break stond in 2019 in de grote zaal van het Kaaitheater, nu maakt de voorstelling haar come-back in het Kaaiprogramma.

Trois interprètes tournent autour de leur axe pendant trois quarts d’heure — un mouvement qui, dans les cérémonies soufies, est censé conduire à un état d’euphorie religieuse. Dans la version de Miet Warlop, il se transforme en une expérience sur la fine ligne de démarcation entre avoir et perdre le contrôle. C’est un mélange de danse tourbillonnante, de récitation et de concert. Comment trouver un équilibre entre la maîtrise de soi et la dévotion ? Ghost Writer and the Broken Hand Break a été présenté en 2019 dans la grande salle du Kaaitheater, et le spectacle revient aujourd’hui dans le programme du Kaai.

Three performers spin around their axis for three quarters of an hour — a movement that in Sufi ceremonies is supposed to lead to a state of religious euphoria. In Miet Warlop’s version, it becomes an experiment on the fine line between having and losing control. It is a mixture of whirling dance, recitation and concert. How can you find a balance between self-control and devotion? One Song speelt zich af in het universum van Warlop, waar een groep performers de arena betreedt voor een betoverend ritueel over afscheid, leven en dood, hoop en wedergeboorte.

Het is 2070, 100 jaar na de eerste staatshervorming. België bestaat niet meer en Vlaanderen is, na 4 jaar oorlog, onafhankelijk geworden.

De families van Poolse bouwvakkers en poetsvrouwen die destijds de gebouwen hebben opgetrokken en schoongemaakt, controleren het land via de technologieën die ze toen inbouwden. Te midden van dit alles proberen een slager, de laatste in de stad, en zijn zoon met een handicap, te overleven. Gorges Ocloo regisseert, componeert en speelt in The Butcher samen met Josse De Pauw. Toon Callier zorgt voor live muziek.

Nous sommes en 2070, 100 ans après la première réforme de l’État. La Belgique n’existe plus et la Flandre est devenue indépendante après quatre ans de guerre. Les familles des ouvrier·ères du bâtiment et des nettoyeur·euses polonais·es qui ont construit et nettoyé les bâtiments à l’époque, contrôlent le pays grâce aux technologies qu’ils avaient jadis construites. Au milieu de tout cela, un boucher, le dernier de la ville, et son fils handicapé tentent de survivre. Gorges Ocloo dirige, compose et joue dans The Butcher avec Josse De Pauw. Toon Callier assure la musique en live.

The families of the Polish builders and cleaners who constructed and cleaned the buildings at the time control the country through the technologies they managed to insert. In the midst of all this, the last butcher in town and his disabled son try to survive. Gorges Ocloo directs, composes and performs in The Butcher together with Josse De Pauw. Een gebogen rug, sprekend zonder mond. Armen die hun eigen gang gaan. Benen die uit zichzelf in het rond zwaaien. Horen al die lichaamsdelen wel bij elkaar? En hoe vloeibaar is identiteit? In zijn solo-debuut verkent Milø Slayers de grens tussen mens en monster. Hiphop en abstracte hedendaagse dans smelten samen, onder een lichtspel dat de gekende menselijke verhoudingen voortdurend vervormt.

Un dos courbé, parlant sans bouche. Des bras qui suivent leur propre chemin. Des jambes qui se balancent toutes seules. Est-ce que toutes ces parties du corps vont ensemble ? Et à quel point l’identité est-elle fluide ? Dans son premier solo, Milø Slayers explore la frontière entre l’être humain et le monstre. Hip-hop et danse contemporaine abstraite se fondent sous un jeu de lumière qui déforme constamment les proportions humaines familières.

Leçon de Ténèbres

In Leçons de Ténèbres zijn vier figuren te zien, drie volwassenen en een kind, die als spreekbuizen van vergeten en verdoezelde verhalen fungeren. Ze graven en graven, gebukt en gebogen, tot ze op het verborgene stoten. De figuren veranderen en vervormen, ze verschijnen en verdwijnen.

Pour cette nouvelle création, Betty Tchomanga poursuit ses recherches sur les cultes vaudou et les croise aux questions d’urgence climatique et sociale.

In Leçon de Ténèbres, four bodies, three adults and a child become the mouthpieces of stories that have been forgotten or that we have tried to make disappear. These people burrow, hunched and curved, until they unearth the invisible. They transform, disappear and metamorphose. In turn, they bring forth visions and assist and challenge them. For this new creation, Betty Tchomanga continues her research on Voodoo cults and crosses them with questions of climatic and social emergency.

Onze hedendaagse cultuur is steeds meer doordrongen van ‘ambient’ ervaringen. Netflix-series, populaire liedjes, maar ook de constante vernieuwing van onze sociale media feeds: ze ontstaan door een kruising van lichtzinnig genot en banale verleiding. Hoe zou een ambient theatervoorstelling eruitzien? Wat gebeurt er als je deze ambient kwaliteit uitvergroot en versterkt, en je ze furieus over de scène laat razen?

Notre culture contemporaine est de plus en plus imprégnée d’expériences « ambiantes ». Les séries Netflix, les chansons populaires, mais aussi le renouvellement constant de nos flux de médias sociaux : ils sont créés par un croisement entre jouissance frivole et séduction banale. À quoi ressemblerait un spectacle de théâtre d’ambiance ? Que se passe-t-il lorsque vous magnifiez et amplifiez cette qualité ambiante et la laissez se déchaîner sur scène ?

Twee artiesten, een theatertechnicus en een muzikant wachten op het begin van hun voorstelling. Alles is er, maar waar blijft toch het publiek?

Al snel blijkt dat er meer dingen vragen oproepen. Van wie is dat koffiebekertje dat door de lucht zweeft? En welk spook gaat er daar met het verlengsnoer vandoor? De onzichtbare man gaat over alles dat je niet ziet.

En stiekem ook over hoe fijn het is om niet gezien te worden.

En ja, je leest het goed: 4+. Zodra de winter in het land is, presenteren Kaaitheater en Bronks — theater voor jong publiek in Brussel — samen een familievoorstelling.

Deux artistes, un technicien de théâtre et un musicien attendent le début de leur représentation. Tout est là, mais où est le public ? Il s’avère rapidement que d’autres questions se posent. Het Brussels vocaal performance ensemble YouYou Group neemt zijn intrek in de ‘penthouse’ van de Kaaistudio’s. Tot eind december werken ze er aan nieuwe projecten. De YouYou Group werd opgericht in Brussel in 2014, met de steun van Myriam Van Imschoot, met de bedoeling de interesse in het vocale gebruik van de youyou (in het Frans) of de zaghareed (in het Arabisch) te delen, verder te verdiepen en vorm te geven.

L’ensemble vocal bruxellois YouYou Group s’installe dans le ‘penthouse’ du Kaaistudio’s. Elles y travailleront sur de nouveaux projets jusqu’à la fin du mois de décembre. Le Groupe YouYou a été fondé à Bruxelles en 2014, avec le soutien de Myriam Van Imschoot, dans l’objectif de partager, d’approfondir et de façonner l’intérêt pour l’utilisation vocale du youyou (en français) ou du zaghareed (en arabe).

In lijn met het Kaaitheatermotto How to Be Many? probeerden we tickets zo toegankelijk mogelijk maken voor zoveel mogelijk mensen. En het werkte! Daarom zetten we {PAY WHAT YOU CAN} voort. Voor alle voorstellingen in het komende Kaaiprogramma koop je tickets aan de prijs die jij bepaalt.

Hoe werkt {PAY WHAT YOU CAN}? Bij elke voorstelling vind je een reeks prijzen terug waaruit je zelf kan kiezen. De prijs in kleur is de suggestieprijs. Vergemakkelijkt een lager tarief je bezoek? Dan ben je vrij dat te kiezen. Kan je je een hogere ticketprijs veroorloven? Dan zorg jij ervoor dat anderen minder kunnen betalen.

(Paspartoe & Article27-tarieven blijven geldig voor wie daar recht op heeft.)

Let op: bij voorstellingen die we samen met andere theaters organiseren, is dit systeem enkel van toepassing wanneer je tickets via het Kaaitheater koopt. Aan de kassa op de voorstellingsavond zelf gelden mogelijk andere prijzen.

L’année dernière, nous avons expérimenté un nouveau système de tarification : {PAY WHAT YOU CAN}. Conformément à la devise du Kaaitheater, How to Be Many?, nous avons essayé de rendre les billets accessibles au plus grand nombre de personnes possible. Et ça a marché ! Comment fonctionne le système {PAY WHAT YOU CAN} ? À chaque représentation, vous trouverez une série de prix parmi lesquels vous pourrez choisir. Le prix indiqué en couleur est le prix suggéré. Un prix plus bas facilite-t-il votre visite ? Alors vous êtes libre de le choisir. Pouvez-vous vous permettre un prix de billet plus élevé ?

Vous faites ainsi en sorte que d’autres peuvent payer moins. (Les tarifs Paspartoe et Article27 restent valables pour ceux·celles qui y ont droit).

Last year, we experimented with a new pricing system: {PAY WHAT YOU CAN}. In line with the Kaaitheater motto How to Be Many?, we hoped to make tickets as accessible as possible for as many people as possible. And it worked! That is why we will carry on with {PAY WHAT YOU CAN}. For all performances in the new Kaaiprogramme, tickets are available at a price of your choosing.

How does {PAY WHAT YOU CAN} work? For each performance, there is a series of prices from which you can choose. The price in colour is the suggested price.

Would a lower price make it more likely that you come? Then feel free to choose that price. Can you afford a higher ticket price? That way, you can make sure that others can pay less. (Paspartoe & Article27 fares remain valid for those who are entitled to them).

ACT est un projet de coopération européenne autour de l’écologie, du changement climatique et de la transition sociale. À la source de ce projet à envergure européenne, il y a 10 structures culturelles issues de 10 pays européens travaillant dans les champs de la performance et des arts visuels. ACT est un projet soutenu par le programme Europe Créative de l’Union Européenne pour un période de quatre ans (2019 - 2023).

Vertrekkend van samenwerking, vertrouwen en vrijheid van uitwisseling, zoekt BE MY GUEST naar flexibele manieren om in te spelen op de behoeften en trajecten van kunstenaars, en investeert op lange termijn in hun werk.

BE MY GUEST réunit 11 partenaires internationaux attentifs au renouvellement des formes et connus pour leur engagement auprès des artistes. Basé sur la complicité, la confiance et la liberté des échanges, BE MY GUEST se questionne sur des manières adaptées de répondre aux besoins des artistes, il est attentif à leurs trajectoires et se base sur une relation d'accompagnement investie, avec un suivi au long cours.

BE MY GUEST brings together eleven international partners that are attentive to the renewal of artistic forms and which are well-known for their commitment to artists. Based on the collaboration, trust and freedom of the exchanges, BE MY GUEST reflects on flexible ways of responding to the needs of artists, it is attentive to their trajectories, and it is founded on a relationship of invested support which is sustained over the long-term.
