HOW ARE WE MANY?

When I got invited to write this piece, the first thought that came to my mind was rather than to question How to be many?

I immediately had the urge to rephrase it as How are we many?

From this small rephrasing, we can affirmatively assume a plurality already exists in our lives. We do not have to start from scratch, or relearn a new way of living, but rather build on what we already have. That is not to deny that the human story is entrenched with hierarchies that have created inequalities both intra-species and inter-species. Undoubtedly, the narrative we have been operating with places the white man (and all he has constructed in spiritual and financial systems, science, and technologies) above all beings — and non-beings. In my project Kitchen. Table., which explores the history of food and food-making practices through trade and migration, I found that a different story already exists in the feminine spaces and practices in the kitchen.

We all need to eat and most of us eat not only for sustenance, but for the joy of taste and for the conviviality of sharing a meal. The taste buds in our mouth that bring us pleasure, and the idea that what we eat is ‘good for our body’, are deeplyentrenched characteristics that drive us to make choices on what food we cook or eat. We need to think like Robin Wall Kimmerer, who says in her brilliant book Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants: ‘Imagination is one of our most powerful tools. What we imagine, we can become.’ What Kimmerer writes about are stories of re-worldling that paint a different image of how we can co-habit with other beings and non-beings on earth, and beyond it into the cosmos.

Take Time, Listen to Your Gut Feelings The kitchen needs time, and making food is often a collaborative process in one way or another. Pickling/fermenting is a metaphor for both these ideas, so I invite you here to make this simple pickle at home. The pickling/fermenting process essentially creates the conditions for yeast and bacteria to form a community in a jar of vegetables. As my artist friend Mirna Bamyeh puts it: you are hosting other micro-organisms who actually do all the work!

The preparation itself doesn’t need much time, but the fermentation process does.

Jar Find a glass jar with a screw top, or a Mason jar. Make sure it is clean (hot water, soap and/or vinegar does the trick), then dry.

Veggie You can make this pickle with one vegetable, or a mixture of these three: Wash and break half a cauliflower into little florets.

Wash a carrot and a medium-sized beet; if you buy these organic, you can wash them well and not peel their skin. Cut into bite-sized pieces. Put all three in the jar.

Brine Dissolve one generous

tablespoon of salt in 2 cups (about 500ml) of warm water. The brine must cover the vegetables completely. There should not be any space at the top of the jar, otherwise the air will invite fungus — which is not welcome to this party! So, if you need more brine, make more.

Flavour

If you are feeling adventurous you can add chili, or peppercorns, or a piece of garlic, or a sprig of a fresh herb such as laurel or rosemary.

Time For one or two days, the jar can sit on a windowsill on which the sun shines directly. This gives you the chance to admire the beautiful colours of the jar, while the warmth gets the fermentation process started. Then store in a cupboard. It will be ready to eat in about three weeks.

In the meantime, I invite you to imagine the larger community of people in the city who have the same jar of pickles sitting in their window. I also invite you to research the human microbiome, and become acquainted with the many bacteria, fungi, and yeasts that live in and on our bodies. Some of these bacteria and yeasts from our skin (and vegetable skin) are busy fermenting the vegetables in the jar. These communities make the unique flavour of the pickles. When you open the jar to taste the pickles, you are feeding the bacteria and yeast communities in your mouth and they help you break down and digest the food. It is a reciprocal relationship. There are over 30 trillion micrograms of bacteria living with us in our bodies, and they outnumber human cells by 10 to 1. Therefore, we are many, or maybe we are not human at all!

Tracing the Lifeline of a Plant Coming to live in Belgium nine years ago made the Kitchen. Table. project possible. The social fabric in different cities in Belgium — especially Brussels — offers a richness of food cultures from all around the world. I was not exposed to this when I was living in Jordan, where food is predominantly from the Eastern Mediterranean. Diverse food cultures in a city are first and foremost evidence of the diversity of its residents. Migrants bring with them the ingredients they need to cook their food.

Supermarkets start to open up — enterprises that are supported by a global network of trade. Soon after, restaurants will surely follow. And before you know it, the most popular items on the menu have made their way to becoming everyday commodities on the supermarket shelf. Humous is a good example of this story.

A recipe of this humble ‘street’ food of the Arab Mediterranean first appears in the fourteenth century cookbook The Treasure Trove 15

of Benefits and Variety of Food on the Table, written by an anonymous author in Egypt. In its modern translation by the brilliant academic and cook Nawal Nasrallah, the book lists eleven different recipes of Himmas Kissa. Below is one you can try:

(618) Another recipe for [Himmas Kassa] Take boiled chickpeas and pound them into a fine mush.

Add vinegar, sweet olive oil, tahini, black pepper, mint, flatleaf parsley, and a bit of dried thyme, walnuts, almonds, pistachios, and hazelnuts-all pounded, toasted caraway and coriander seeds, salt, lemon preserved in salt, and olives. Spread the mix on a plate. Sprinkle the surface with cassia (cinnamon) and drizzle it with olive oil. Set is aside for a day, and serve it. It will come out good, God willing.

While we struggle today with the negative consequences of our appetite for both the familiar and the unknown, imported produce gives us another way of understanding our connectedness beyond political borders. When we buy sesame seeds harvested in Sudan, we are consuming a plant that formed its life from another earth, air, rain; it endured (dust) storms, draughts, and floods. It shared its life with worms, it fed on animal poop, and mingled with yeasts, fungi and bacteria, as well as the humans that harvested the seeds under the blazing sun. It’s true that a lot of these products have been cleaned and ‘sanitised’.

Nevertheless, by thinking of the singular journey of a plant — even metaphorically — we can give tribute to all the lives we eat (not just the animals) whose happy or unhappy journey ends up in our belly, feeding our body, and the trillion other bodies living in it. In the smallest grain of sesame we consume we become Sudan.

In his book Fruit from the Sands: The Silk Road Origins of the Foods We Eat, Robert N. Spengler III outlines the history of one of the most famous trade routes in the world which ran from China through Central Asia to what we now call the Middle East.

Across this network ‘the transmission of intellectual culture, technology, raw and crafted materials, and human DNA through the mountains, valleys and deserts of the Silk Road shaped European and Asian history… [It] altered ecosystems and cuisines around the globe.’ When we walk into a speciality shop that sells food from Pakistan, Syria, Brazil, Romania or Congo, we are participating in the very old human habit of insourcing and trading products, 16

produce for our joy and sustenance. Humans have always been on the move, and that is how seeds and recipes moved. Let us not forget that 500 years ago there was no tomato outside of the Americas, and garlic has only recently been accepted in Northwestern Europe as a basic herb in the kitchen.

Mighty Oregano Kitchen. Table. was guided by the three plants that make the herbal mixture za’tar. This food which carries the same name of the plant za’tar — ‘oregano’ in Latin and English — is a staple in the Arab Eastern Mediterranean kitchen. It is an everyday food consumed by dipping bread into olive oil, and then into the za’tar mixture, and eating it. Or it is sprinkled on a small freshly-baked pizza called Man’oushe Za’tar.

It strikes me how ephemeral za’tar is — simply a combination of a dried herb, a tiny seed, sesame, and the soft citrusy skin of the seeds of the flower of the sumac tree. Like dust: if you sprinkle it in the wind, it disappears. Not much food from anywhere around the world that I can think of can blow away like dust in the wind. At the same time, it carries so much cultural weight, memory, and a connectedness to three seasons of the year.

In spring, people would traditionally forage za’tar from the wild.

In summer, they harvest sesame seeds. And in the fall, they collect sumac.

In Arabic, a single shrub of za’tar/oregano is referred to as beit za’tar, which means a home of oregano. Language gives us clues to how people relate to the objects and beings around them. The intimacy of calling a singular bush a home denotes that people recognise the plant as a safe space: a place where beings come together, a place of nurture and care. In the book Gewürze und Kräuter 2, the ‘mighty oregano’ is described as important in medicine for its strong antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal oils. In the past, rather than isolating single compounds in a plant, medics would regard the healing qualities of the whole plant. They also took inspiration from the plant’s form and shape, to understand what we spiritually learn from it. The way a beit za’tar grows — horizontally spreading new branches to set roots beside its mother — signifies strong familial bonds and love. The ‘mighty oregano’ is also connected to the planet Venus.

Commonly referred to as the planet of love, Venus guides us in making bonds with people with whom we share a part of our life.

If one bite of a food connects us with the many cosmologies of our known and unknown universes, then we are many.

We are many beings and non-beings all mushed-up in one. I leave here the recipe for making za’tar this fall. The sharp oils of oregano will surely protect your health as the season shifts.

Za’tar Recipe

1 PART TOASTED SESAME or a little more if you like it’s taste.

The best comes from east Africa Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia.

½ PART SUMMAC Which you can buy from Syrian, Lebanese or Turkish shops in Brussels. ½ TEASPOON SALT Put the oregano in a coffee mixer and grind to the count of 6 or until it’s a lightly grainy powder.

Put it in a bowl with the sesame, salt and sumac. Mix very well so the ingredients blend. Store in a jar in dry place. To eat, put the mixture in a bowl. Put olive oil in another bowl.

Tear a piece of bite size bread.

Dip the bread (with gusto and determination) into the oil. Then dip it into the Za’tar, and then into your mouth!

The best ones I have come across are either sold in Syrian shops, or in Greek shops under the name Dittany or Dictamnus which have a large, round olive-green leaf.

O Samba do Crioulo Doido

NL O Samba do Crioulo Doido is een stekende, frontale kritiek op de raciale stereotypen die geassocieerd worden met zwarte lichamen en die rondspoken in ons collectieve onderbewustzijn. Het stuk werd in 2004 gecreëerd door Luis de Abreu en 20 jaar later doorgegeven aan Calixto Neto. Het is een schalkse toe-eigening van een lichaam dat vaak als ondergeschikt wordt beschouwd, een uitnodiging om zichzelf en de eigen geschiedenis terug te claimen.

FR O Samba do Crioulo Doido est une critique frontale et piquante des stéréotypes raciaux associés aux corps noirs qui hantent nos inconscients collectifs. Créée par Luis de Abreu en 2004 puis transmise à Calixto Neto 20 ans plus tard, la pièce est une réappropriation malicieuse d’un corps souvent vu comme subordonné, une invitation à reprendre possession de soi et de son histoire.

EN O Samba do Crioulo Doido is a stinging, frontal critique of the racial stereotypes associated with black bodies that haunt our collective subconscious. The piece was created by Luis de Abreu in 2004 and, almost two decades later, has passed on to Calixto Neto. It is a mischievous appropriation of a body often considered subordinate, an invitation to reclaim itself and its own history.

NL Als de maan ons kon vertellen wat ze ziet op aarde, hoe zouden we haar woorden dan vertalen? En wat als er een wolk zou tussen komen? Met het ‘weerbericht’ als dramaturgie werkt Livre d’images sans images met verschillende media die niet bij elkaar willen komen.

S’inspirant du « bulletin météo » comme dramaturgie, la pièce s’appuie sur différents médias qui ne cherchent pas à se conjuguer les uns avec les autres.

EN If the moon could tell us what she sees on earth, how would we translate her words? And what if a cloud would come in between?

Using the ‘weather report’ as a template for dramaturgy, the piece works with different media that do not seek to come together.

NL Een doorlopend gesprek tussen dochter en vader over menselijke kennis en onbekende gebieden. De horizon, als metafoor voor wat onbekend of onbegrepen is, ligt niet enkel in de verte maar zit ook in ons; verspreid doorheen ons lichaam, ons leven en onze geschiedenis.

Deze horizon is oneindig, het leven niet.

FR Une conversation permanente entre une fille et un père sur les connaissances humaines et les territoires inconnus. En tant que métaphore de ce qui est inconnu ou incompris, l’horizon ne s’étend pas seulement au loin mais également en nous ; dispersé dans nos corps, nos vies et nos histoires. Unearth

NL Met Unearth worden we zachtjes meegenomen op een lange reis, die zich uitrekt en speelt met de elasticiteit van de tijd. Negen performers weven geleidelijk de draden van een onzichtbaar netwerk om ons heen, met polyfone liedjes, gefluisterde melodieën en poprefreinen.

The Sheep Song

NL Een schaap staat op en besluit dat het niet langer tevreden is met zichzelf. Het voelt dat het meer in zich heeft, voorbestemd is tot een glorieuzer leven dan dat van zijn soortgenoten. De weg naar de ultieme transformatie is lang, maar het schaap zet door, vastbesloten om het lot, de wetten van de fysica en de goede smaak te tarten. A Series of More-Than-Human Encounters

Things we know we will never know kijkt naar de Horizon als een zich uitstrekkende, veranderende grens en onderzoekt de verbinding tussen ‘het onbekende daarbuiten’ en ‘het onbekende hierbinnen’. Het wordt een avond om te spreken over de dingen waarvan we weten dat we ze nooit zullen weten.

FR Il existe un lieu auquel la connaissance humaine n’aura jamais accès. L’horizon marque cette frontière. Mais un point final est également enfoui dans notre corps, notre psyché, notre biographie et notre histoire. Things we know we will never know considère l’Horizon comme une frontière qui s’étire et se transforme, et explore le lien entre « l’inconnu du dehors » et « l’inconnu du dedans ». TRAVELLING SOURCES NL Travelling sources is een driedaags kunst- en reflectieprogramma samengesteld door Hari Prasad Sacré, Arshia Ali Azmat en Hoda Siahtiri over gemeenschappen die imperiale grenzen onvrijwillig doorkruisen en bedreigde vormen van vertelkunst met zich meedragen.

Travelling sources nodigt Ariella Aïsha Azoulay uit voor een academische, cinematografische en narratieve reis rond gestolen kunst, vaardigheden en materialen die opgeslagen en tentoongesteld worden in imperialistische musea. Azoulay neemt je mee op een anti-koloniale tocht (in het Engels ‘travel’, van het Franse ‘travail’, dat staat voor pijnlijke en intensieve arbeid, ook gelinkt aan verplaatsing), in de voetsporen van zij die op zulke reizen gedwongen werden. Ze belicht de aanspraak van ontheemde gemeenschappen (inclusief zij die nu Europa binnenvluchten) op de gestolen objecten die in koloniale musea tentoongesteld staan.

Hari Prasad Sacré

is an educator and researcher currently affiliated with Ghent University, working on transnational histories, illiteracy and political emancipation. His academic and artistic work explores cultural translation as a pedagogical project for dialogue, solidarity, connectivity and emancipation.

Hoda Siahtiri

is an audio-visual and performance artist and researcher. Her artistic and educational background is in cinema and performing arts. She defines herself as a storyteller who narrates and mediates voices that have been silenced in the past.

Siahtiri’s work centers around the feminine body, knowledge and ancestral heritage. She conducts a PhD-research on the singing tradition of Bakhtiari women in the west of Iran.

Arshia Ali Azmat

is a graphic designer, community organiser and researcher affiliated with VUB. Her artistic and graphic work focuses on linking personal and global histories through storytelling and archival explorations. She is also contributing to a research project on vacant spaces in the city and their transformation from temporary occupation sites to permanent social infrastructures.

TRAVELLING SOURCES Ariella Aïsha Azoulay

is an author, curator of anticolonial archives, film essayist, and theorist of empires and its various technologies (from partition to photography). She is Professor of Modern Culture and Media and the Department of Comparative Literature at Brown University. Her work centers around unlearning imperial histories, engaging with archives to generate anti-colonial knowledge and generate potential histories.

Juna Suleiman

is a Palestinian filmmaker, casting director, film editor, and actress.

Since completing her studies in Cinema and Television in 2006, she has worked on numerous films, alongside her first feature documentary Mussolini’s Sister which received nominations and awards internationally.

Hagar Ophir

is a multidisciplinary artist, trained as a historian, stage designer and dancer. Her works establish history as a space for action and imagination of possible presents beyond separations of time, nation-states and ideologies.

NL Helen en haar man Danny vieren thuis het nieuws dat Helen zwanger is van hun tweede kind. Hun etentje wordt onderbroken door Helens broer Liam die onder het bloed toekomt. In zijn theatertekst Orphans (2009) vol chaotische en levensechte dialogen die de haperende communicatie tussen mensen bijna natuurgetrouw weergeven, ontrafelt Dennis Kelly minutieus een moreel dilemma.

FR Helen et son mari Danny fêtent chez elles·eux la nouvelle qu’Helen est enceinte de leur deuxième enfant. Leur dîner est interrompu par Liam, le frère d’Helen, qui arrive couvert de sang. Dans sa pièce Orphans (2009), riche en dialogues chaotiques et réels qui dépeignent presque fidèlement la communication chancelante entre individus, Dennis Kelly démêle un dilemme moral avec minutie.

FR Il s’agit d’essayer de rentrer à la maison, dans une maison. Il s’agit de cellui qui part et de cellui qui reste. Il s’agit d’être étranger·ère. D’être réfugié·e. De fiction et de réalité, et de la manière dont on imagine cette réalité. Il s’agit d’autres fictions. Du passé depuis Homère. De notre passé. D’aujourd’hui, d’ici, et de maintenant.

NL In februari 2024 is Brussel het speelveld van IT TAKES A CITY — een gloednieuw festival voor de volgende generatie van Brusselse podiumkunstenaars. Acht verschillende Brusselse podia en kunstenorganisaties bundelen hun krachten voor deze nieuwe biënnale en presenteren nieuw en bestaand werk uit de Belgische hoofdstad.

FR En février 2024, Bruxelles sera le terrain de jeu de IT TAKES A CITY : un tout nouveau festival axé sur la nouvelle génération d’artistes de la scène bruxelloise. Huit organisations des deux côtés de la frontière linguistique unissent leurs forces pour ce nouveau festival biennal afin de présenter de nouvelles productions artistiques et d’autres qui existent déjà, réalisées dans la capitale belge.

OCCUPER L’ESPACE POUR Y RACONTER DES RECITS QUI ME SONT CHERS Une rencontre avec Soa Ratsifandrihana, par Maria Dogahe et Eva Decaesstecker Elle danse depuis qu’elle a su se tenir debout, la musique est son refuge.

Depuis 2021, la danseuse et chorégraphe Soa Ratsifandrihana crée son propre travail. En tant que femme de la seconde génération d’immigration malgache en France, aujourd’hui installée à Bruxelles, elle occupe

l’espace des arts de la scène pour y raconter des récits et convoquer des références qui lui sont chères, et qu’elle souhaiterait partager à un plus large public que celui des habitué·es du théâtre. De 2023 à 2025, Soa est artiste en résidence au Kaaitheater.

Quand s’est produite la transition de danseuse à chorégraphe ?

C’est une question que je me pose encore aujourd’hui.

Je pense que je me suis mise à chorégraphier lorsque j’ai ressenti la nécessité d’amener mes propres références sur scène. La chorégraphie n’était pas un désir au départ. Ce que je voulais, c’était danser. Mais si je voulais danser comme je le souhaitais, il fallait chorégraphier.

Outre la danse et la chorégraphie, tu écris aussi.

Quel est ton parcours d’écrivaine ?

Les rêves d’être autrice, c’est certainement mon côté français. Écrivaine, c’est beaucoup dire. J’écris oui, mais j’écris pour moi. Il se peut que je me mette un jour à partager des textes en tout genre et cela m’est déjà arrivé de le faire. Mais pour le moment, c’est principalement une pratique sans but précis qui m’aide à me situer, à me comprendre, à consigner les choses que j’observe et que je ne veux pas oublier. L’écriture accueille ma complexité et travaille ma sensibilité et mes sens.

On m’avait toujours dit qu’« un arbre sans racines ne pousse pas ». Je questionne parfois ma façon de creuser l’intime, mais je suis comme ça, et sur le plan personnel et artistique, j’ai besoin de m’accrocher à des réalités qui me définissent malgré leurs complexités. De fait, le retour aux origines est aujourd’hui évident.

Le retour du récit, oui. Je me méfie actuellement de ce qu’on appelle les formes abstraites. Lors d’une première sortie de résidence pour mon nouveau projet, j’ai fait des tests pour voir comment pouvaient dialoguer la matière radiophonique et la danse.

J’accompagnais des paysages sonores ou des témoignages en dansant. Parfois, je traduisais littéralement ce qu’on entendait en mouvement. J’ai pu constater que cela dérangeait. Les spectateur·ices habitué.es du lieu préféraient des mouvements plus abstraits. C’est quelque chose que je ne comprends pas toujours et pourtant, l’abstraction a été plus que présente dans mon parcours d’interprète. Je pense qu’on est nombreux.ses à se poser la question : jusqu’à quel point explore-t-on l’incompréhensible pour se distinguer ?

HOE KAN EEN SPEL ZO ONTZETTEND BELANGRIJK ZIJN?

Interview met Ahilan Ratnamohan, door Barabara Van Lindt Barabara Van Lindt en Eva Decaesstecker Theatermaker en choreograaf Ahilan Ratnamohan, geboren in Australië van Srilankese ouders, studeerde initieel af aan de filmschool in Sydney en overwoog een voetbalcarrière, voor hij

het podium opstapte. Als theatermaker maakt hij vandaag interdisciplinaire stukken met onconventionele performers en vormen.

Zoals elk parcours, is ook het jouwe opgebouwd uit ervaringen en keuzes. Het zijn eye-openers, geplante zaadjes die indirect jouw weg bepalen.

Klopt! Het kantelmoment in mijn kijk op cinema kwam bijvoorbeeld door Requiem for a Dream van Darren Aronofsky. Mijn eerste revelatie binnen podiumkunsten was een theatervoorstelling van Carlos Gomez. Een kantelpunt van performer naar regisseur was tijdens mijn tijd bij het gezelschap Branch Nebula. Toen ik toevallig een repetitie bijwoonde van het dansensemble bij Theater Ulm besloot ik meteen erna balletles te volgen. Ik kwam er ook voor het eerst in contact met een meertalige omgeving.

Taal is een van de rode draden doorheen je werk.

Wanneer werd taal voor jou een onderwerp om voorstellingen rond te maken?

Dat was in 2010 met The Foreigner — een soort spel waarbij een groep buitenlandse leerlingen die Engelse les volgden, de gids waren voor een grotendeels Engelstalig publiek. Veel van de tactieken die we hebben gebruikt, ben ik de voorbije jaren blijven onderzoeken.

Ik leer talen aan de hand van de context waarin ik me bevind en ben voorstellingen gaan maken in de lokale taal, zoals The Perfect Migrant, een monoloog in het Lets, of recent Une Tradiction Infidèle in het Frans.

Ik besefte hoe weinig plek ik kon vrijmaken voor het Tamil, de taal van mijn ouders die ik zelf niet aangeleerd kreeg (ik werd opgevoed in het Engels in Australië, in de overtuiging dat dit later mijn kansen zou vergroten). Ik leer altijd twee talen tegelijk en de taalkeuze is vaak gebaseerd op de projecten die ik doe.

Recent heb ik voor mezelf besloten dat Tamil altijd een van de twee talen moet zijn.

Naast taal was voetbal ook een van de grote onderwerpen in je werk, al lijkt dit thema de laatste jaren wat meer op de achtergrond te liggen.

Voetbal is al een aantal jaren afwezig in mijn werk — iets wat ik betreur. Ik heb het gevoel dat meertaligheid in België meer weerklank vindt en ook mijn eigen eindeloze interesse in taal heeft ervoor gezorgd dat de focus tegenwoordig voornamelijk daar ligt.

Binnen voetbal heb ik wel nog veel te onderzoeken.

Sinds ik trainer ben in mijn dochters voetbalteam, besef ik hoeveel ik van voetbal hou. En dat durf ik soms niet zeggen in de kunstenwereld. Het fascineert me dat een spel zo ontzettend belangrijk kan worden dat je er continu mee bezig kunt zijn. Volgend jaar vindt trouwens het Europees Voetbalkampioenschap plaats in Duitsland. Het lijkt alsof 2024 het jaar van de terugkeer naar mijn voetbalroots zal zijn!

BUREN IS A VERB. Interview with Oshin Albrecht and Melissa Mabesoone

by Agnes Quackels and Eva Decaesstecker In the essay ‘Building, Dwelling, Thinking’, the German philosopher Martin Heidegger uses ‘buren’ as a verb.

In this interview, Oshin Albrecht and Melissa Mabesoone — who called their collective buren — often translate it as

‘nesting’. Another favourite pastime of theirs is inverting, going from the recognisable to something alien, from golf sticks to playground equipment.

You both come from visual arts. How did you end up in the performance scene?

In early 2013, we were able to attend the Les Laboréales residency programme, which unwittingly became the first step in our careers on stage. Until then, our own installations and performances had always been in a visual context. As part of our visual work, we had also been doing scenography. We mostly created in situ, so the environment always played a role.

That is also what inspired us to use buren, as our name. ‘Buren’ is about constantly being in relationship with your surroundings. About how, wherever you are, you help shape that place.

You work multidisciplinarily and many projects consist of multiple versions in different media.

Is there a set medium you start with and from which other forms emerge?

We often start from a collection of objects and images.

Some objects prompt a particular action, others invite you to write something about them or stimulate looking. We look for the object’s poetical and political aspects.

Most of our work is currently presented within the performing arts. But every time, derivative ‘products’ such as prints, objects, videos are created as part of the creation process. For us, it is a game with different forms of display, acting and image-making.

What are your main sources of inspiration?

Musicals from the 1950s come back often, mainly because of the scenography with endless spaces without corners or edges and in which new worlds constantly emerge in a very fluid way. There are also loads of writers, musicians and videographers who inspire us — from Lewis Caroll and Erika Beckman to Meredith 109

Monk — but what stands out is the combination of popular or accessible sources and more intellectual references.

Many of the scenes you create as part of your work include domestic features. Within it, you play your roles as female characters and question situations from a feminist perspective.

The image of women, both in art history, advertising and history has been woven into our work for some time, but we only explicitly addressed it with Blue Skies Forever. There, we really started focusing on stage effects. The show is very much about the gaze, what perspective you offer to the viewer, how an image is constructed and manipulated, and the way people look. As we were creating, we noticed a kind of self-censorship in ourselves, which then turned into a form of resistance.

A resistance through transformations. We played with representations and preconceptions, transforming through voice acting, poses and costume changes.

Every year, Het TheaterFestival kick-starts the new season with a selection of the most surprising and interesting productions from the last season. The festival alternates between Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent.

The international house of literature Passa Porta is a unique, multilingual meeting place in the heart of Brussels for anyone and everyone curious about ideas, texts and stories. HISTORY APPEARS IN THE MAKING OF A NEW KAAITHEATER

NL Het Kaaitheatergebouw aan de Sainctelettesquare staat al een jaar in de steigers. Muren vielen weg en toonden wat anders onzichtbaar bleef. Oude gevels kwamen tevoorschijn en brachten het verleden weer tot leven. Heel even maar, want beetje bij beetje worden deze ontblote fundamenten ingevuld door de vele wanden en ruimtes van het vernieuwde theatergebouw. Straks begint hier voor Kaaitheater een nieuw hoofdstuk.

FR Le bâtiment du Kaaitheater situé au square Sainctelette est en cours de rénovation depuis un an.

Des murs ont été abattus, révélant ce qui demeurait sinon invisible. D’anciennes façades sont apparues et ont fait revivre le passé.

Pendant peu de temps cependant, car peu à peu, ces fondations nues sont comblées par les nombreux murs et pièces du bâtiment rénové du théâtre. Un nouveau chapitre va bientôt s’ouvrir pour le Kaaitheater.

EN The Kaaitheater building on Square Sainctelette has for a year now been behind scaffolding.

Walls have been removed revealing what so far had been invisible. Old façades emerged and brought the past back to life.

But only briefly, because step by step, the bare foundations are being completed with the many walls and spaces of the renovated theatre building. A new chapter will soon begin here for Kaaitheater.

EN Kitchen Broadcast is an ongoing online conversation, listening to different voices, rhythms and sounds that reflect contemporary situations crossing their path in Brussels, composed by Joachim Ben Yakoub and Reem Shilleh.

The first episodes cover the process of decolonisation in the Maghreb, the work of Lara Khaldi and Rolando Vazquez, lumbung practice (a concept of the Indonesian ruangrupa around collective ways of working and living together) and other types of institutions.

Mophradat reads PUBLICATIONS NL In 2004 ontstond Mophradat in Brussel, met als doel kansen te creëren voor kunstenaars uit de Arabische wereld via financiering, het uitschrijven van opdrachten, samenwerkingen en ontmoetingen. Mophradat landde in 2022 al eens in de Kaaistudio’s met hun Read the Room-festival — en komt in 2024 terug met een nieuwe editie.

Read the Room is ook een publicatiereeks rond vragen die een impact hebben op de Arabische artistieke gemeenschap (iedereen verbonden met de Arabische wereld via een brede waaier aan kunstpraktijk). De eerste (Engelstalige) edities behandelen Arabische kunstcollectieven in Europa en zelf-organisatie. De reeks is online te lezen, samen met tal van andere publicaties zoals Why Call It Labor? On Motherhood and Art Work (waarrond Mophradat een gesprek organiseerde binnen het Kaaitheaterprogramma) of Can we Rule It Out? Collective ideas for keeping sexual abuse out of art spaces.

FR Mophradat a été fondée en 2004 à Bruxelles, et est une organisation qui entend créer des opportunités pour les artistes du monde arabe par le biais de financements, de commandes, de collaborations et de rencontres.

Mophradat a déjà atterri au Kaaistudio’s en 2022 avec son festival Read the Room — et reviendra en 2024 avec une nouvelle édition.

Read the Room consiste également en une série de publications sur des questions ayant un impact sur la communauté artistique arabe (toute personne liée au monde arabe par un large éventail de pratiques artistiques). Les premières éditions (en anglais) traitent des collectifs artistiques arabes en Europe et de l’auto-organisation. La série peut être consultée en ligne, ainsi que de nombreuses autres publications telles que Why Call It Labor ?

We try to record the debates, talks and lectures we organise as much as we can and share them on our Vimeo channel. From the latest More-than-HumanEncounters lecture to the Olave Talks during the lockdown, or the many Performatik salons, to old formats like Soul Food.

FR La chaufferie de l’ancienne brasserie de l’Étoile — aujourd’hui le Kaaistudio’s — au cœur de Bruxelles est depuis longtemps le laboratoire du Kaaitheater et de ses partenaires, un lieu où des créateur·ices de toutes générations résident, créent et présentent leur travail.

Le concert studio — un espace de 100 m2 avec une hauteur impressionnante de 6m70 et une lumière zénithale est à louer !

Avec son plancher en bois, ses murs en briques et son excellente acoustique, cet espace se prête à de nombreuses activités, des réunions aux réceptions et aux fêtes d’entreprise. À côté du concert studio se trouve un foyer doté d’un bar et d’une terrasse, qui peuvent également être loués.

EN The distillery of the old lambic brewery L’Étoile — now Kaaistudio’s — in the heart of Brussels has long acted as a laboratory for Kaaitheater and its partners, a place where makers of all generations reside, create and present.

The concert studio which covers 100 m2 with a massive ceiling height of 6.7 metres and an overhead light intake is for rent! With its wooden floor, brick walls and excellent acoustics, this space lends itself to numerous activities — from meetings to receptions and company parties. Next to the concert studio is a foyer with a bar and a terrace, which can also be rented.

NL De stookplaats van de voormalige geuzebrouwerij L’Étoile — vandaag de Kaaistudio’s—in hartje Brussel is sinds jaar en dag hét laboratorium van Kaaitheater en partners, een plek waar makers van alle generaties resideren, creëren en presenteren.

De concertstudio — een ruimte van 100 m2 met een indrukwekkende hoogte van 6m70 en een zenitaal licht — is te huur! Met de houten vloer en bakstenen wanden en uitstekende akoestiek, leent deze ruimte zich tot tal van activiteiten, van vergaderingen tot recepties en bedrijfsfeesten. Naast de concertstudio ligt een foyer met bar en terras, die mee gehuurd kunnen worden.

Kaaitheater’s new clothes Winter 23, we launched an open call for a new graphic designer for Kaaitheater. More than 130 people, collectives and other constellations reacted. We were overwhelmed, touched and also very happy. After a careful selection process, Brussels based designers Chloé Delchini and Morgane Le Ferec were the ones selected. Here’s the statement they submitted for the Open Call: “Graphic design is putting words on stage for people to see them. This stage is of multiple formats. A visual composition works like a play, moves like a choreography. Typographical characters are like narrative characters: they have a voice in space, they tell a story.

Theatre and dance are modular practices, they adapt to space for one moment relived and replayed to feel unique.

Modular typefaces have this flexibility too: they are always build from the same parts and pieces but they can convey and write anything. Like a body dancing. Like an actor playing.

With a new design came the wish to create a new sound, so proudly presenting Kaaitheater’s MOTHERTUNE, composed by Brussels based musician/performer Céline Gillain. In her own words: “The MOTHERTUNE is a call to celebrate being alive, a pop song sung by a multitude of mouths possibly with the idea of turning this celebration into a protest. The sung words are ‘Leaving open the gate’ — the gate of emotions, but also the door of the art institution. Emotions are a way in that don’t require a certain cultural or social background, they’re powerful political tools as we get carried along/away by them.

To compose the MOTHERTUNE, I thought about Chantal Mouffe and her proposal to radicalize democracy by bringing passion back to the left, bringing back the body into the political debate; as well as Luce Irigaray when she speaks of the ‘archi-ancient and the forever future’.”
