Tout le bien est un récit autobiographique à double fond : d’une part la vie de l’ancien soldat d’élite israélien et vétéran de guerre Elik Niv, d’autre part, la vie de Jan Lauwers, Grace Ellen Barkey et leurs enfants dans leur habitation et lieu de travail du quartier de Molenbeek.

C’est une histoire d’amour à une époque où l’Europe sacrifie ses valeurs et que toujours plus de gens cèdent à la haine et à l’incompréhension.

All the good is a story with a double autobiographical background: on the one hand, the life of Israeli elite soldier and war veteran Elik Niv, and on the other, Jan Lauwers’ life with Grace Ellen Barkey and their children in a house and workspace in Molenbeek. It is a love story in an age in which Europe is throwing its values to the wind and a growing group of people is being seduced by hate and intolerance.

Het is een liefdesverhaal in een tijd waarin Europa zijn waarden te grabbel gooit en een steeds grotere groep mensen zich laat verleiden tot haat en onbegrip.

Vlakbij de Kaaistudio’s staat een rij verwaarloosde en ongezonde sociale woontorens die binnenkort tegen de grond gaan: het zijn de vijf blokken van de Papenvest.

De huidige bewoners moeten plaatsmaken voor een koopkrachtiger publiek. Het Brussels Brecht-Eislerkoor brengt een muziektheaterstuk dat hun verwarring en onzekerheid probeert te vatten en evoceren. À proximité des Kaaistudio’s se trouvent cinq barres de logements sociaux insalubres et négligés : les cinq immeubles du Rempart aux Moines. Tous vont bientôt être rasés. Les habitants doivent faire de la place pour un public plus nanti. Le spectacle de théâtre musical du Brussels Brecht-Eislerkoor tente de saisir et d’évoquer leur confusion et leur incertitude.

A stone’s throw from the Kaaistudios, there is a row of dilapidated and unhealthy social housing blocks that will soon be demolished: the five blocks of the Rempart des Moines. The current residents have to make way for more affluent buyers. The Brussels Brecht-Eisler Choir is presenting a musical theatre piece that attempts to capture and evoke their confusion and uncertainty.

In haar eerste werk voor het theater brengt Els Dietvorst twee solo’s samen.

De eerste wordt gespeeld door Dirk Roofthooft, de tweede door de jonge Brusselse actrice Aurelie Di Marino. De ene monoloog is een spiegel van de andere.

Als tweeluik staan ze stil bij thema’s als individualisering, globalisering en migratie, en de vervreemding en onttovering van de wereld die ze met zich meebrengen.

Na een toernee door Vlaanderen keert de voorstelling terug naar de Kaaistudio’s, waar ze afgelopen seizoen in première ging.

Waarom is het belangrijk om de gemarginaliseerde geschiedenis van het feminisme in Roemenië en Oost-Europa voor het voetlicht te brengen?

En wat kan dit betekenen voor ons collectieve, historische bewustzijn?

Met een collage van feministische stemmen, artistieke gebaren, historische avant-garde en traditionele songs focust Eszter Salamon op de geschiedenissen van Roemenië.

In the American Midwest of the 1880s, men would conceal illegal bottles of alcohol in their boots. The term ‘Bootlegging’ – meaning to smuggle – was born. Now there is Bootlegged: an encounter between Boyzie Cekwana and Danya Hammoud. Two bodies, two stories and two histories collide to create a third, shared story. Both choreographers show one another the wrinkles that the past has left on their bodies. But this new encounter also leaves its mark.

In het Amerikaanse Midwesten van de jaren 1880 gebruikten mannen hun laarzen om flessen alcohol illegaal te vervoeren. De term ‘Bootlegging’ – oftewel smokkelen – was geboren. Nu is er Bootlegged: een ontmoeting tussen Boyzie Cekwana en Danya Hammoud. Twee lichamen, twee verhalen, en twee geschiedenissen vormen al botsend een derde, gedeeld verhaal.

Beide choreografen tonen elkaar de sporen die het verleden op hun lichamen heeft achtergelaten. Maar ook dit nieuwe samenzijn laat sporen na.

Maar met de komst van het internet is het format definitief op zijn retour. In TALK SHOW neemt Suze Milius er afscheid van, in een poging om waarde toe te kennen aan alles dat geleidelijk verloren gaat.

theatre ‘A challenging absurdist response to troubled times.’ – THE STAGE ‘Devilish gameshow is a Forced Entertainment tour de force.’ – THE GUARDIAN Op een leeg podium onder felle lampen doen zes troosteloze clowns hun best om samen de tijd te verdrijven. Ze vliegen elkaar in de haren, komen tot bedaren, en dan herbegint het spel van voren af aan. Out Of Order – de eerste woordeloze voorstelling van Forced Entertainment – balanceert op een slap koord tussen grap en tristesse. Het is een voorstelling in flarden, die wijst op een wereld aan flarden.

De muziek zwelt telkens weer aan tot een climax. En alles leidt uiteindelijk tot… niets.

Sur une scène vide et sous des projecteurs éblouissants, six clowns tristes s’efforcent de faire passer le temps. Ils se crêpent le chignon, s’apaisent, et puis recommencent.

Out Of Order – le premier spectacle sans paroles de Forced Entertainment – oscille savamment entre drôlerie et tristesse.

Un spectacle en lambeaux dans un monde en lambeaux. La musique s’amplifie et atteint son apogée à plusieurs reprises. Et finalement, tout cela ne mène à… rien.

In Out Of Order, de recentste voorstelling van het Britse theatergezelschap Forced Entertainment, zit een groep clowns rond een tafel. Elk stil moment vult zich telkens met de volgende conflictueuze explosie.

‘In de figuur van de clown gaan komedie en tragedie hand in hand.

Maar met de huidige politieke en klimatologische crises in het achterhoofd, is zijn aanwezigheid op scène natuurlijk geen toeval’, zegt regisseur Tim Etchells.

Forced Entertainment bestaat al meer dan dertig jaar. Hoe bewaar je het evenwicht tussen enerzijds trouw blijven aan de kern van waar het gezelschap voor staat, en tegelijk met elke voorstelling jezelf weer heruitvinden en met de tijd mee evolueren?

In de kern is Forced Entertainment een blijvende samenwerking tussen zes artiesten.

In de loop van de tijd bouwen we een taal op, een reeks vaardigheden en aanpakken, collectieve kennis, en begrip. Dat gaat gepaard met een lang en langzaam soort politiek engagement. Ons doel is iets te ontwikkelen dat echt collectief is. Maar natuurlijk was er vanaf het begin al verandering: verschuivingen in de esthetica en verschuivingen in de manier waarop het proces werkt. Het gebeurde ook door andere mensen uit te nodigen om met ons samen te werken of door verschillende soorten projecten op te zetten. Dus het gaat inderdaad om een soort evenwicht tussen engagement voor een continu gezamenlijk proces en een openheid om wat we doen te laten beïnvloeden door de wereld en onze respons op die wereld.

Wanneer je Forced Entertainment bekijkt vanuit dat continue perspectief, zijn er verschillende elementen die almaar terugkeren, zoals herhaling. Waarin zit hem de kracht van herhaling?

We tonen bijvoorbeeld een groep mensen die zozeer gefascineerd of geobsedeerd zijn door iets dat ze er almaar weer naar terug willen keren. Zo wordt herhaling een manier om personages op te voeren die een probleem proberen te doorgronden of op te lossen, die zichzelf los proberen te maken of ergens uit proberen te geraken.

Gek genoeg gaan die voorstellingen evenzeer over verandering. Ze gebruiken herhaling om verandering te tonen. Wanneer elementen (zoals bewegingen of teksten) herhaald worden in onze voorstellingen, veranderen ze eigenlijk voortdurend – we stemmen het publiek af door de aandacht op verschillen en verschuivingen te richten.

Toont die constante zoektocht naar oplossingen ook een fascinatie voor mislukking?

Ik denk dat we vaak geïnteresseerd zijn in figuren die falen, die geen glorieuze, gemakkelijke oplossing voor hun probleem vinden. Ze zitten met iets en zoeken een uitweg.

Er zit komedie in de mislukking, in de manier waarop mensen vastzitten in het materiële en er niet aan kunnen ontsnappen. In het leven zitten we allemaal met verschillende dingen en het is niet omdat we graag zouden willen dat er iets verandert, dat het ook zomaar gebeurt.

Ik vind het fascinerend om mensen met iets te zien worstelen. Tegelijk erken ik ten volle 10

hoe moeilijk dat is én de realiteit van werken in een situatie waarin we niet alles rondom ons kunnen controleren.

Out Of Order is jullie eerste stuk zonder woorden. In Real Magic zaten wel nog enkele woorden, hoewel die in de loop van de voorstelling hun betekenis verloren. Nu gaan jullie een stap verder.

De beslissing kwam voort uit het repetitieproces. Het was geen doel of ambitie vooraf.

We begonnen het stuk te maken zoals altijd: door verschillende materialen uit te proberen.

Eigenlijk zijn we met veel tekst begonnen. Die probeerde het materiaal uit te leggen of erop in te grijpen, maar ik denk dat we allemaal aanvoelden dat hij het materiaal zwakker in plaats van sterker maakte. Gesproken taal reikt altijd een bepaald soort informatie of uitleg aan. En we vonden het net prettig dat er geen informatie kwam: wat gebeurt is wat gebeurt.

Het is heel privé, maar ook superdirect. Het is wat het is. De gesproken taal was verwarrend, alsof het de lucht uit de ballon perste. Ik denk dat ik op een bepaald punt wist: hier ontdoen we ons eindelijk van alle gesproken taal.

In een tekst die je over Out Of Order hebt geschreven, noem je de figuren op het podium ‘bijna clowns’. Wat bedoel je daarmee?

In onze voorstellingen bekleden we de personen op scène met referenties aan een bepaalde theatrale of performatieve functie – ze kunnen eruitzien als cabaretiers of showdansers, of als clowns. Maar vervolgens doen ze nooit helemaal wat je van zulke figuren zou verwachten – alsof ze hun rol vergeten zijn of alsof ze momenteel niet aan het werk zijn. In Out Of Order zit een groep clowns rond de tafel en op verscheidene momenten lijkt er een gevecht of achtervolging in te zetten. Het zou hun clownsact kunnen zijn. Maar zeker zijn we niet. Is al dat discussiëren en vechten echt? Is het toneel? Doen ze het voor hun plezier?

Haten ze elkaar? Hoe moeten we het begrijpen? Natuurlijk spiegelt het een situatie waar we ons ook buiten het theater vaak in bevinden: we komen in situaties terecht waarvan we niet snappen wat er aan de hand is, waar we niet zeker zijn van de status van wat ons omringt.

In die zin brengen we in Out Of Order een bizarre situatie op scène. Er is iets vreemds aan de hand en als publiek moet je je daartoe zien te verhouden. Je wordt in een confrontatie met de gebeurtenissen geduwd. Er is geen compromis, we gooien je het diepe in – niemand komt je alles uitleggen, niemand maakt een grap die aangeeft dat alles wel weer goed komt.

Het is er gewoon en jij moet daarmee omgaan. We moeten erop vertrouwen dat het publiek een manier zal vinden om daar doorheen te komen.

Zoals zoveel van onze stukken balanceert dit stuk tussen speels, komisch, humoristisch, en de afgrond, dat gigantische gat eronder. We proberen het stuk in dat spanningsveld tussen die komische energie en het gevoel van een enorm emotioneel en politiek gat te houden. Daar willen we het hebben, precies op dat evenwichtspunt. Het is inherent aan de figuur van de clown, maar je vindt het evengoed bij Beckett en Bruce Nauman: die fascinatie voor figuren die bestaan om te entertainen en grappig te zijn, maar die ook een band hebben met conflict, geweld en tragedie. Precies dat hangt al in de lucht wanneer je die make-up aanbrengt.

Out Of Order is ook een uitdrukking die we gebruiken voor kapotte machines. Wanneer ze ‘buiten dienst’ zijn functioneren ze niet (meer). Mogen we de clowns als dysfunctionele clowns zien, dus clowns die niet optreden en bijgevolg niet langer efficiënt zijn, afgekeurd door een maatschappij die enkel efficiëntie en perfectie aanvaardt?

Ik denk dat er twee dingen spelen. Om te beginnen werken we vaak met figuren uit het populaire entertainment, het cabaret, de vaudeville of stand-up… Er is altijd een interesse voor wat er gebeurt wanneer het verkeerd loopt met zo’n uiterst efficiënte amusementsmachine of wanneer ze stopt met functioneren. De machinerie gaat kapot, maar sommige 11

onderdelen blijven doorgaan. Wat zien we dan? Natuurlijk zijn er verschillende mogelijkheden: wanneer ze begint te haperen, begrijpen we beter wat entertainment is. We zien het geweld ervan – het geweld van wat het is om toeschouwer te zijn, of wat het is om uitvoerder te zijn. We beginnen de mensen achter het entertainment anders te bekijken.

En poëtisch gezien verschijnen er nieuwe mogelijkheden wanneer dingen stuk gaan – je hebt het normale functioneren van de machine gereorganiseerd en er komt iets anders aan de oppervlakte.

Ook toont Out Of Order een groep mensen die rond een tafel zitten alsof ze een vergadering, discussie of conferentie bijwonen. Zo’n bijeenkomst van een groep rond een tafel kan veel dingen zijn. Het lijkt me niet verwonderlijk dat we Out Of Order of Real Magic net nu hebben gemaakt, in tijden van Brexit, Trump en klimaatverandering. Er heerst een gevoel dat politieke oplossingen in een eindeloze impasse terecht zijn gekomen.

Zelfs wanneer iedereen het correcte antwoord op een vraag kent, lijken ze niet in staat om het ook zo te laten gebeuren. Ik denk dat die twee stukken de frustratie met onze structuren aanraken. En ze gaan heel erg over mensen die vastzitten in een sociale en politieke machine die niet naar behoren werkt.

Op vlak van entertainment zijn we ook geïnteresseerd in de vraag waar we een publiek naartoe kunnen brengen. Hoeveel van de efficiëntie van die zeer strikte amusementsmachines uit de populaire cultuur of de mainstream heeft een publiek nodig? We weten dat een publiek eigenlijk veel meer aan kan dan mensen doorgaans veronderstellen – ze kunnen naar veel verschillende plaatsen gebracht worden. Ik denk dat we ons daarom zozeer tot theatermaken aangetrokken voelen: omdat het een plaats is waar je nog kunt experimenteren en spelen met dat soort vragen om zo een heel ander soort contact met je publiek te creëren. Dat is wat we willen. Het is ons er niet enkel om te doen om die machine kapot te maken. Het draait om de ruimte en de connectie die je kunt openen met toeschouwers.

En op de een of andere manier, wanneer je de machine stuk maakt, wanneer ze buiten dienst is, ontstaan er meer mogelijkheden dan wanneer alles op rolletjes loopt.

Out Of Order, le nouveau spectacle de la compagnie de théâtre britannique Forced Entertainment, nous donne à voir une bande de clowns autour d’une table.

Chaque moment paisible est porteur de la prochaine explosion conflictuelle.

Comédie et tragédie vont de pair chez le clown, mais compte tenu du temps de crises politique et climatologique, la présence de ce personnage sur scène n’est pas une coïncidence, nous explique Tim Etchells, directeur de Forced Entertainment.

Cela fait plus de trente ans que Forced Entertainment a vu le jour. Comment maintenir l’équilibre entre s’en tenir à la quintessence de Forced Entertainment et continuer à se réinventer à chaque production et à évoluer avec le temps ?

Par essence, Forced Entertainment est une collaboration continue entre six artistes. Au fil du temps, nous avons construit un langage, un ensemble de compétences et d’approches, une connaissance et une compréhension collective. Et cela va de pair avec une sorte d’engagement politique long et lent. Notre objectif est de développer quelque chose de réellement collectif. Mais des changements ont bien sûr toujours eu lieu, dès le début : des changements sur le plan esthétique, dans le mode de fonctionnement du processus. Par ailleurs, nous avons aussi toujours invité d’autres personnes à venir travailler avec nous ou lancé des projets de type différent. Il s’agit donc en effet d’une sorte d’équilibre entre un engagement commun dans un processus continu et une ouverture au changement, une tentative de permettre au monde et à nos réponses au monde de changer des choses dans ce que nous faisons.

Si l’on considère Forced Entertainment du point de vue de la continuité, on observe plusieurs caractéristiques récurrentes, comme la répétition. Où se situe la force de cet élément selon vous ?

L’une des façons dont nous utilisons la répétition est de montrer sur scène un groupe de gens tellement fascinés ou obsédés par quelque chose, qu’ils ont envie de le répéter encore et encore. La répétition devient un moyen de porter à la scène des personnages qui essaient de comprendre ou de résoudre un problème, de se détacher, de sortir de quelque chose.

Ces spectacles ne traitent d’ailleurs que de changement, de manière amusante certes, et ils se servent de la répétition pour le montrer. Les choses qui se répètent dans nos spectacles (des mouvements, des textes) changent en fait tout le temps – nous accordons le public en concentrant l’attention sur les différences et les changements.

Cette recherche constante de solutions témoigne-t-elle aussi d’une fascination pour l’échec ?

Je pense que nous nous intéressons souvent aux personnages qui échouent, qui ne trouvent pas l’évidente solution glorieuse à leur problème. Ils sont coincés et essaient de trouver un moyen de s’en sortir. Il y a de la comédie dans l’échec, dans la manière dont 13

les gens sont coincés et incapables de trouver une échappatoire. Dans la vie, nous sommes tous coincés de diverses façons et ce n’est pas parce que nous aimerions que quelque chose change que cela se produit automatiquement. Selon moi, il y a quelque chose de fascinant dans le fait de regarder des gens se débattre avec quelque chose, d’en reconnaître la difficulté et dans la réalité de travailler dans une situation où nous ne contrôlons pas tout autour de nous.

Out Of Order est votre premier spectacle de théâtre muet. Dans Real Magic, il y avait encore quelques mots, même si au fil du spectacle, ils perdaient leur sens, mais à présent vous franchissez un pas de plus.

La décision émane du processus de répétition, ce n’était pas une intention ou une ambition préliminaire. Nous avons commencé à créer cette pièce comme chaque fois : en essayant différents matériaux dans le studio. En fait, nous avons commencé par beaucoup de texte pour tenter d’expliquer ou servir de médiateur, mais je pense que nous avons tous ressenti que le texte affaiblissait le matériau au lieu de le rendre plus puissant. Le langage parlé offre toujours une sorte d’information ou d’explication. Et nous aimions le fait qu’il n’y ait pas d’information : ce qui se déroule se déroule. C’est très privé, mais aussi très direct. C’est ce que c’est. Le langage parlé était déroutant et retirait de l’air du ballon. Et je pense qu’à un moment donné, je me suis dit : ce spectacle est celui où nous allons enfin nous débarrasser de tout langage parlé.

Dans un texte que vous avez écrit sur Out Of Order, vous qualifiez les personnages sur scène de « quasi-clowns ». Qu’entendez-vous par là ?

Dans nos spectacles, les costumes des performeurs font souvent référence à une sorte de fonction ou performance théâtrale : ils peuvent ressembler à des animateurs de cabaret, à des danseurs de revues ou à des clowns. Mais ces personnages ne font jamais tout à fait ce à quoi on pourrait s’attendre de leur part – comme s’ils avaient oublié leur rôle ou comme s’ils faisaient relâche. Dans Out Of Order, une bande de clowns sont assis autour de la table et à divers moments, une sorte de bagarre ou de poursuite semble avoir lieu. Cela pourrait être leur numéro de clowns. Mais en même temps, cela ressemble à une bagarre qui éclate dans un bar ou à une scène de film d’action. Les costumes de clown leur donnent une tournure théâtrale ludique, mais on n’en est pourtant pas tout à fait sûr. Toute la dispute et le pugilat sont-ils réels ? Est-ce de la comédie ? Le font-ils pour s’amuser ? Se détestent-ils vraiment ? Comment le comprendre ? Bien sûr, cela reflète aussi la situation que nous vivons souvent en dehors du théâtre : nous rencontrons des situations où nous ne comprenons pas ce qui se passe, où nous ne sommes pas sûrs du statut de ce qui nous entoure.

En ce sens, nous avons créé une situation étrange sur scène dans Out Of Order. Il se passe quelque chose d’étrange et, en tant que public, il faut y faire face. Le spectateur est poussé dans une rencontre avec des événements. C’est sans concession, c’est un plongeon dans l’abîme – personne ne vient tout expliquer ou plaisanter sur le fait que tout ira bien.

C’est là et il faut faire face. Et nous devons faire confiance au public, être confiants qu’il trouvera un moyen de négocier cela.

Cette pièce, comme beaucoup de nos pièces, se maintient en équilibre entre quelque chose de ludique, de comique, d’humoristique, et l’abîme, l’énorme trou béant en dessous.

Nous tentons de maintenir la pièce dans le champ de tension entre cette énergie comique et la sensation d’un immense trou sur le plan émotionnel et politique. C’est là que veut se situer le spectacle, précisément sur ce point d’équilibre. C’est inhérent à la figure du clown.

C’est aussi dans Beckett, et dans Bruce Nauman : il y a cette fascination pour ces personnages qui sont là pour divertir et être drôles, mais qui entretiennent un lien avec le conflit, la violence et la tragédie. C’est exactement ce qui est dans l’air au moment où on se grime.

Out Of Order (hors d’usage) est aussi une expression utilisée pour les machines.

Lorsqu’elles sont « hors service », cela signifie qu’elles ne fonctionnent pas ou plus.

Pourrait-on faire une lecture des clowns comme des paillasses dysfonctionnels, qui ne sont plus performants ni efficaces ? Rejetés par une société qui ne permet que l’efficacité et la perfection ?

Je pense qu’il y a là deux choses. Tout d’abord, nous travaillons beaucoup avec des personnages du divertissement populaire, des clowns, des personnages du cabaret, du vaudeville ou du stand up… Il y a toujours cet intérêt pour ce qui arrive quand cette machine de divertissement très efficace ne tourne pas rond ou ne fonctionne plus.

Le mécanisme s’enraye, mais certains de ses dispositifs continuent de fonctionner. Que voit-on alors ? Bien sûr, différentes choses deviennent possibles : nous comprenons mieux ce qu’est avant tout le divertissement dès lors qu’il commence à se détraquer. On en voit aussi la violence – la violence de ce qu’implique le fait d’être spectateur, ou ce qu’implique le fait d’être performeur. On commence à voir de manière différente les êtres humains qui se dissimulent sous le divertissement. Et sur le plan poétique, de nouvelles possibilités commencent à émerger lorsque les choses tombent en panne – parce qu’on réorganise le fonctionnement normal de cette machine et qu’autre chose commence à émerger.

L’autre aspect d’Out Of Order, c’est qu’il montre un groupe de gens assis autour d’une table comme s’ils avaient une réunion, une discussion ou une conférence. Cette réunion d’un groupe de gens autour d’une table peut être beaucoup de choses. Je ne suis pas surpris qu’Out Of Order ou Real Magic soient réalisés à l’heure actuelle, en ces temps de Brexit, de Trump et de réchauffement climatique. Il y a ce sentiment que les solutions politiques sont dans une impasse sans fin. Même si tous connaissent la bonne réponse à une question, ils ne semblent toujours pas capables de s’organiser pour la mettre en œuvre. Je pense que ces deux spectacles s’adressent à une certaine frustration à l’égard de nos structures. Et il s’agit en grande partie de personnes coincées dans un mécanisme social et politique qui ne fonctionne pas correctement.

Quant aux questions de divertissement, nous nous intéressons aussi à la question de savoir où nous pouvons emmener un public. Dans quelle mesure le public a-t-il besoin de l’efficacité de ces machines de divertissement très rigoureuses répandues dans la culture populaire ou dominante ? Nous savons qu’un public peut faire face à beaucoup plus que ce que les gens supposent en général – on peut l’emmener vers de multiples destinations différentes. Je pense que c’est ce qui nous a poussés à faire du théâtre en premier lieu. Parce que c’est un lieu où l’on peut encore expérimenter et jouer avec ces questions afin de créer un type de contact différent avec le public. C’est ce que nous désirons. Pas seulement pour le plaisir de briser cette machine. Ce qui compte, c’est le type d’espace et de liens qu’on peut créer avec le public. Et d’une certaine façon, quand on détraque cette machine, quand elle est hors d’usage, les possibilités deviennent plus grandes que lorsque tout fonctionne parfaitement bien.

WE THROW YOU IN THE DEEP END, AND YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT A CONVERSATION WITH FORCED ENTERTAINMENT’S TIM ETCHELLS

In Out Of Order, the latest show by the British theatre company Forced Entertainment, we see an alley of clowns around a table. Each quiet moment is charged with the next conflictual explosion. Comedy and tragedy go hand in hand in the figure of the clown, but considering these times of political and climatological crises, a clown’s presence onstage is no coincidence, says Tim Etchells, director of Forced Entertainment.

It’s been more than thirty years since Forced Entertainment was founded. How do you maintain the balance between sticking to the core of what Forced Entertainment is versus continuing to reinvent yourself with each piece and evolving with the times?

At its core, Forced Entertainment is an ongoing collaboration between six artists. Over time, we have built up a language, a set of skills and approaches, a collective knowledge, and an understanding. There is a kind of long slow political commitment to that. Our goal is to develop something that is truly collective. But of course right from the beginning, there has always been change: shifts in the aesthetics, and shifts in the way the process works, but also inviting other people to come and work with us or by instigating different kinds of projects. So it is indeed a question of finding a balance between commitment to an ongoing process together and at the same time being open, trying to let the world and our responses to the world change things inside what we do.

When looking at Forced Entertainment from the ongoing perspective, there are several features that keep on recurring, such as repetition itself. Wherein does the strength of this element lie for you?

One way we use repetition is to show a group of people on stage who are so fascinated or obsessed by something, that they want to turn it over again and again. Repetition becomes a way of showing figures on stage who are trying to understand or solve a problem, trying to unstick themselves, to get out of something.

In a funny way of course, these performances are also all about change. They use repetition in order to show change. When things (movements, texts) are repeated in our performances, in fact they change all the time — we’re tuning the audience, focusing attention on differences and shifts.

Does this constant search for solutions also show a fascination for failure?

I think we’re often interested in figures who are failing, who are not finding the glorious easy solution to their problem. They’re stuck with something and trying to find a way out.

There is something comedic in failure, in the way people get stuck with material and are not able to escape it. In life we’re all stuck with various things and just because we would like something to change it doesn’t automatically do so. For me there is a fascination in watching people struggle with something, in acknowledging the difficulty of that and the reality of working in a situation where we don’t control everything around us.

Out Of Order is your first silent theatre show. Real Magic did still have a few words, but they lost all meaning as the piece went on. Now you have gone another step further though.

The decision came out of the rehearsal process, it was not an aim or ambition beforehand. We started making that piece the way we start everything: by trying different materials in the studio. In fact, we started with a lot of text, which tried to explain or mediate the material, but I think we all felt that the text was making the material weaker instead of stronger. Spoken language always pretty much offers a kind of information or explanation.

And we liked that there was no information: what is happening is what is happening. It is very private but also super direct. It is what is it. The spoken language was confusing and took the air out of the balloon. And I think at some point I started thinking: this is the one where we will finally get rid of all the spoken language.

In a text you wrote about Out Of Order, you call the figures on stage ‘almost clowns’.

What do you mean by that?

In our performances, people onstage are often dressed with reference to some kind of theatrical or performance function — they might look like cabaret entertainers, or show dancers, or clowns. But then they never quite do what you’d expect such figures to do — as though they have forgotten their roles or as though they are somehow off duty. In Out Of Order a bunch of clowns are sitting around the table and at various points some sort of fight or chase seems to be happening. It could be their clown act. But at the same time, it looks like a fight breaking out in a bar or like a fight in a movie. The clown costumes push it in a playful theatrical direction, but at the same time, we can’t quite be sure. Are the disputes and the fighting real? Is it an act? Are they doing this for fun? Do they really hate each other? How to understand it? Of course it also mirrors the situation we’re often in outside of the theatre: we encounter situations where we don’t understand what is happening, where we’re not sure of the status of what surrounds us.

In that sense, we’ve created a strange situation on the stage in Out Of Order. There is something odd happening and as an audience you need to deal with it. You’re pressed into an encounter with the events. It’s uncompromising, it throws you in the deep end — no one is coming to explain everything or to make a joke about how it’s all going to be fine.

It’s just there and you have to deal with it. We have to trust the audience that they will find a way to negotiate this.

This piece, like many of the pieces, balances between something that is playful, comical, with a lot humour, and the abyss, the huge hole underneath it. We’re trying to keep the piece in the tension between this comical energy and the sense of a huge hole emotionally and politically. That’s where it wants to be, exactly on that balance point. It’s inherent to the clown figure. It’s in Beckett too, and in Bruce Nauman: there is this fascination with these figures who are there to entertain and to be funny, but who have a relationship with conflict and violence and tragedy. That’s exactly what’s in the air when you put on that make-up.

Out Of Order is also an expression used for machines. When they’re ‘out of order’ they don’t function (anymore). Could you read the clowns as dysfunctional clowns, which are not performative and efficient anymore? Rejected by a society that only allows efficiency and perfection?

I think that there are two things there. First of all, we work a lot with figures from popular entertainment, clowns, cabaret or vaudeville or stand up… There is always this interest in what happens when this very efficient machine of entertainment goes wrong or stops functioning. The machinery breaks but some of its devices continue to perform. What do we see then? Of course different things become possible: we understand better what entertainment is in the first place when it starts to break down. We see the violence 17

in it too — the violence of what it is to be a spectator, or what it is to be a performer.

We start seeing the people underneath the entertainment in a different way. And poetically speaking, new possibilities start to emerge when things breaks down — because you’ve rearranged the normal functioning of that machine and something else starts to emerge.

The other thing about Out Of Order is that it shows a group of people, sitting down around a table as if they might have a meeting or a discussion or a conference. This gathering of a group around a table can be many things. It is no surprise to me that Out Of Order or Real Magic are made now, in this moment of Brexit and Trump and Global Warming.

This sense that political solutions are in an endless deadlock. Even though everybody knows the correct answer to a question, they still don’t seem to be able organize themselves to make it happen. I think both of those pieces speak to a kind of frustration with the structures that we have. And they are very much about people who are caught in a social and political machinery that doesn’t work properly.

When it comes to questions of entertainment, we also have an interest in the question of where we can take an audience? How much does an audience need of the efficiency of those very tight entertainment machines that are set out in popular culture or mainstream forms. We know that an audience can actually cope with a lot more than people ordinarily suppose — they can be taken to many different places. I think that is what pulled us into making theatre in the first place. Because it’s a place where you can still experiment and play with those questions in order to create a different kind of contact with the audience. That’s our desire. Not just for the sake of breaking that machine. What matters is what kind of space and connection you can open up with audiences. And somehow when you’re breaking that machine, when it’s out of order, the possibilities are greater than when everything is going smoothly.

HOW TO BE MANY? Met de vraag How to be Many? landden de nieuwe artistiek en algemeen coördinatoren Agnes Quackels en Barbara Van Lindt in het Kaaitheater. Intussen zijn ze aan het werk, leren ze het huis kennen en onderzoeken hoe ze van het Kaaitheater een meerstemmig huis kunnen maken. In dit gesprek lichten ze alvast een tipje van de sluier.

IN TANDEM Agnes: Een jaar geleden besloten we allebei te stoppen op onze huidige job, zonder een nieuw plan in het vooruitzicht te hebben. We volgden elkaars werk al lang en hadden al heel wat gesprekken achter de rug over wat een kunstinstelling kan zijn. En toen kwam de mogelijkheid om die ideeën ook echt in werkelijkheid om te zetten.

Barbara: How to be Many? verenigt vragen die op dit moment in de samenleving en het kunstenveld leven: hoe kunnen we, vertrekkend vanuit de feitelijke diversiteit, ook inclusief worden? Hoe vertaalt zich dat in een manier van leidinggeven en artistieke keuzes maken?

MEERSTEMMIGE PLANNEN B: We zijn nog maar pas begonnen, en de plotse besparingen vragen om scherpe keuzes, waarbij we ook op zoek zijn naar evenwicht en gelijkwaardigheid. De pijlers van onze oorspronkelijke plannen zijn daarbij richtinggevend. Vanuit de titel How to be Many? focussen we op continuïteit, een meer intensieve publiekswerking, het introduceren van open source programmering en cultiveren we de mentaliteit van een lerend instituut.

A: Met continuïteit willen we de verantwoordelijkheid van dit huis naar de artiesten en het veld toe bewaren. Je mag de ontwikkeling van het Vlaamse landschap van de afgelopen dertig jaar niet zomaar weggooien. Dat heeft mee bepaald hoe we vandaag naar podiumkunsten kijken, hoe we ze maken.

A: We zullen 20% van onze budgetten en ons programma in handen geven van anderen en dan vooral voor mensen en organisaties die doorgaans minder gerepresenteerd zijn. Dit idee van ‘open source’ leerden we kennen in Centre of Contemporary Arts in Glasgow, waar de organisatie (infrastuctuur, expertise en personeel) als toolbox aangeboden wordt om het programma van anderen te realiseren.

De eerste gesprekken met Brusselse organisaties zijn al opgestart.

B: Naar ons publiek toe vertrekken we vanuit het concept ‘sense of entitlement’: wie voelt zich gerechtigd om te spreken? Hoe kunnen we ervoor zorgen dat meer mensen zich aangesproken voelen om een relatie aan te gaan met hedendaagse podiumkunsten? We onderschrijven Frie Leysens mantra ‘onderschat nooit uw publiek’ en voegen eraan toe: besef ook dat een potentieel publiek – vanwege de drempels die het ervaart ­– als het ware zichzélf kan onderschatten.

A: Onze modus operandi is die van een lerend instuut. Vanuit de wens om bij te dragen aan een toekomst die feministisch, intersectioneel en inclusief is, leren we van bestaande praktijken. Of het nu CCA Glasgow is, Zinnema hier in Brussel, het Zurichse Gessnerallee (een driekoppig vrouwelijk directieteam) of Primeira Vez van Portugese Teatro Nacional D. Maria II.

LEREN UIT ERVARING A: We nemen ook ervaringen mee die we in het verleden opdeden, doordat we op verschillende domeinen binnen de kunsten hebben gewerkt. Ik heb zelf in verschillende posities binnen de sector gewerkt, zoals in een productiebureau of als artistiek leider van een kunstencentrum. Wat ik meeneem is het inzicht in hoe kunst geproduceerd wordt: wat zijn de werkcondities van de kunstenaar?

B: Ik neem naar het Kaaitheater de ervaring mee dat er geen mede-eigenaarsschap is zonder medeauteursschap. Als je wil dat een huis als het Kaaitheater gedragen wordt door verschillende mensen – zowel de kunstenaars als het publiek en de medewerkers – moet je hen ook mee laten schrijven aan het verhaal van het Kaaitheater.

HOW TO BE MANY? C’est avec la question How to be Many? que les nouvelles coordinatrices artistiques et générales Agnes Quackels et Barbara Van Lindt ont atterri au Kaaitheater. Entretemps, elles sont à l’œuvre, elles explorent la maison et examinent la meilleure manière de faire du Kaaitheater un lieu polyphonique. Dans cet entretien, elles lèvent un coin du voile.

EN TANDEM Agnes : Il y a un an, nous avons chacune décidé de mettre un terme à nos emplois du moment, sans autre projet en prévision. Nous suivions depuis longtemps nos carrières respectives et avions déjà eu d’innombrables discussions de ce que pourrait être une institution artistique.

Et puis, la possibilité de concrétiser ces idées s’est présentée.

Barbara : How to be Many? rassemble des questions qui préoccupent la société et le champ artistique actuellement : comment pouvons-nous, à partir de la diversité factuelle, également devenir inclusifs ?

Comment cela se traduit-il en une manière d’opérer des choix artistiques et d’encadrement général ?

PROJETS À PLUSIEURS VOIX B : Nous venons à peine de commencer et les coupes budgétaires soudaines requièrent des choix pointus, auxquels s’ajoute une quête d’équilibre et d’égalité. Les piliers de nos projets initiaux restent notre orientation. À partir de l’énoncé How to be Many?, nous nous focalisons sur la continuité, sur une médiation vers le public plus accentuée, sur l’introduction d’une programmation open source et nous cultivons une mentalité d’institut d’apprentissage.

A : Avec la continuité, nous souhaitons préserver la responsabilité de cette maison envers les artistes et le champ artistique. On ne peut pas simplement jeter aux orties le développement du paysage artistique flamand des trente dernières années. Cela a contribué au regard que nous portons aujourd’hui sur les arts du spectacle vivant et sur la façon dont ils sont créés.

A : Nous allons confier 20 % de nos budgets et de notre programme à d’autres, surtout à des personnes t des organisations qui sont moins représentées en général. Cette idée d’open source nous vient du Centre of Contemporary Arts à Glasgow, où l’organisation (infrastructure, expertise et personnel) est proposée comme boîte à outils pour réaliser le programme de personnes extérieures à l’institution.

Les premières discussions avec des organisations bruxelloises ont déjà été entamées.

B : Vers notre public, nous partons du concept sense of entitlement (sentiment d’avoir droit) : qui se sent habilité.e à parler ? Comment pouvons-nous veiller à ce que davantage de gens se sentent appelés à engager une relation avec les arts de la scène contemporains ? Nous souscrivons au mantra de Frie Leysen : « ne sous-estimez jamais le public ». Et nous y ajoutons : toujours avoir conscience qu’un public potentiel peut se sous-estimer en raison des seuils qu’il rencontre.

A : Notre mode opératoire est celui d’un institut d’apprentissage. À partir du souhait de contribuer à un avenir féministe, intersectionnel et inclusif, nous nous inspirons de pratiques existantes.

Que ce soit du CCA Glasgow, de Zinnema ici à Bruxelles, de la Zurichse Gessnerallee (une équipe de direction tricéphale majoritairement féminine) ou du projet Primeira Vez du Teatro Nacional D. Maria II au Portugal.

APPRENDRE DES EXPÉRIENCES A : Nous nous inspirons aussi d’expériences passées, puisque nous avons toutes deux été actives dans différents domaines au sein des arts. Moi-même, j’ai occupé diverses fonctions dans le secteur, comme la création d’un bureau de production ou la direction artistique d’un centre d’art. B : J’emporte avec moi au Kaaitheater l’expérience qu’il n’y a pas de copropriété sans copaternité de l’œuvre. Si l’on souhaite qu’une maison comme le Kaaitheater soit portée par plusieurs personnes – aussi bien des artistes que le public et les collaborateurs –, il faut les laisser participer à l’écriture du récit du Kaaitheater.

HOW TO BE MANY? The new artistic and general coordinators Agnes Quackels and Barbara Van Lindt have arrived at Kaaitheater with the question How to be Many?. They are working, discovering the centre and exploring how they can make Kaaitheater a many-voiced theatre. In this conversation, they lift a corner of the veil.

IN TANDEM Agnes: A year ago, we both decided to stop the jobs we were doing, but we didn’t have a plan about what to do next. We had been following one another’s work for a long time and we had had many conversations about what an arts institution could be. And then we were offered the opportunity to put those ideas into practice.

Barbara: How to be Many? brings together questions that are currently being raised both in society and in the arts world: how can we become inclusive from within our factual diversity? How does that translate into ways of being managers and making artistic choices?

MANY-VOICED PLANS B: We’ve only just started, and the sudden budget cuts require difficult decisions in the context of which we must try to find balance and equality. The cornerstones of our original plans are our guiding principles. Starting from the title How to be Many?, we are focussing on continuity, more intensive audience development, the introduction of open source programming, and cultivating a mentality of a learning institution.

A: Through continuity we seek to preserve the responsibility this theatre has towards the artists and the field. You can’t simply disregard the developments in the Flemish landscape over the past thirty years.

They in part determine how we currently conceive of the performing arts, and how we create them.

A: We will give 20% of our budgets and our programming to others, and especially to people and organizations that tend not to be well-represented. We discovered this idea of ‘open source’ at the Centre of Contemporary Arts in Glasgow, where the organization (infrastructure, expertise and staff) are offered as a toolbox to realize the programme of others. The first conversations with organizations in Brussels have already started.

B: Our relationship with our audiences is based in the concept ‘sense of entitlement’: who feels entitled to speak? How can we ensure that more people feel prepared to engage with contemporary performing arts? We subscribe to Frie Leysen’s mantra ‘never underestimate your audience’ and add the following: realize that a potential audience may as it were underestimate itself – due to the thresholds that is experiences.

A: Our modus operandi is that of a learning institute. We learn from existing practices based on our desire to contribute to a future that is feminist, intersectional and inclusive. Whether it is CCA Glasgow, Zinnema here in Brussels, the Zurich Gessnerallee (a three-member team of female directors) or Primeira Vez by the Portuguese Teatro Nacional D. Maria II.

LEARNING FROM EXPERIENCE A: We are also shaped by our past experiences, given that we worked in different domains in the arts.

I myself worked in various positions within the sector, including in a production office and as the artistic director of an arts centre. What I take with me is the insight into how art is produced: what are the working conditions of the artist?

B: What I’m bringing to Kaaitheater is the experience that there is no co-ownership without co-authorship. If one wants an arts centre like Kaaitheater to be sustained by different people – the artists as well as the audience and members of staff – you have to let them contribute to writing Kaaitheater’s story.

This curated Beckett evening presents a surprising mix of forms: a monologue by Johan Leysen; an academic lecture about memory, neurology, machines and consciousness; a video installation with an immersive (post-)apocalyptic landscape; and a concert. Through this journey, Kris Verdonck explores a fascination that he shares with Beckett, namely technology and the increasing conflict between humans and machines. Do we still have a place in the world in which we are not only increasingly being replaced by machines, but which is also evolving towards inhabitability because of our own actions?

Sara Ahmed is an independent feminist scholar and writer, concerned with how power is experienced and challenged in everyday life and institutional cultures. In this talk, she draws on interviews conducted with staff and students who have made complaints within universities that relate to unfair, unjust or unequal working conditions and to abuses of power. Ahmed approaches complaint as a form of diversity work: the ordinary and often painstaking labour of trying to transform institutions so they are more accommodating. She reckons with the fact that complaints so often happen ‘behind closed doors’ – even when they appear to be opened.

In the 1970s, the two World Trade Centre towers crowned the newly developed ‘Little Manhattan’ in Brussels Northern District. The project failed, leaving the towers and surrounding area largely abandoned. Since late 2017, the owner of the towers has showed a renewed interest in the area. Closely witnessing the changes from their studio space on the 25th floor of WTC tower 1, Wouter De Raeve and Lietje Bauwens decided to enter the debate by making a film with several actors that claimed a voice in the transition. WTC A Love Story uses fiction as a method to explore what stories enter the scene when the process of representation is accelerated.

Sur une scène couverte d’une épaisse couche de terre sont rassemblés 14 danseurs d’âges et de parcours différents. Dans un flux continu de mouvements d’un corps à l’autre, le groupe, qui évolue de manière constante vers une apothéose sauvage, est régi par une expérience tactile qui partage solitude et fiction : comment peut-on être en groupe et néanmoins seul ?

On a stage covered with a thick layer of earth stand fourteen dancers – all different in age and dance background. Movements flow from one body to the next, gradually building to a wild climax. The result is a tactile experience that shares loneliness with fiction: how is it that you can be alone even when you’re in a group?

Op een scène die bedekt is met een dikke laag aarde staan 14 dansers – alle verschillend in leeftijd en dansachtergrond. Gestaag opbouwend naar een wilde climax, vloeien bewegingen van het ene lichaam naar het andere.

Het resultaat is een tactiele ervaring die eenzaamheid met fictie deelt: hoe kun je in een groep toch alleen zijn?

À partir de l’actualité de cette révolution, l’auteur Mustapha Benfodil brosse un portrait universel de la résistance et du rôle indéniable qu’y jouent les femmes.

L’architecte et urbaniste Halim Faïdi vit et travaille à Alger. Lors de cette conférence, il se penche sur le passé et l’avenir de la célébrissime Casbah de sa ville. Bien qu’elle est au Patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, elle aujourd’hui menacé de délabrement et de surpopulation.
