Rétrospective is Jérôme Bels subjectieve terugblik op zijn eigen werk. Uit zijn videoarchief koos hij verschillende dansfragmenten.

Via een zorgvuldige montage reconstrueert hij daarmee de ontwikkeling van zijn denken over dans. Door de nadruk te leggen op de verwevenheid van dans en politiek komen centrale thema’s in zijn werk bovendrijven.

Jérôme Bel voert John Cage’s beroemde lezing Lecture on Nothing op in het Frans: een hypnotiserende ervaring. « Je n’ai rien à dire et je le dis. » C’est avec ces paroles que John Cage entame son discours Lecture on Nothing à l’Artists’ Club à New York en 1949. Le texte emprunte beaucoup à une partition hypnotique qui suivrait la structure des récentes compositions musicales de Cage – y compris une attention particulière au silence. À présent, Jérôme Bel lit le discours en français.

Rétrospective is Jérôme Bel’s subjective reflection on his own work. He chose various dance fragments from his video archive.

Through meticulous editing, he has used them to reconstruct the development of his thinking about dance. By emphasizing the links between dance and politics, he foregrounds central themes in his work.

Following the screening, there will be an extended talk with Jérôme Bel, in English.

Come and meet the world-famous economist and thorn in the side of what he calls the ‘free market fundamentalists’. Wanneer we Bashar Murkus spreken over zijn recentste stuk, The Museum, heeft hij net enkele dagen vrij. Het perfecte moment voor een interview, vindt hij, want het biedt hem wat afstand tot het creatieproces.

De jonge theatermaker is een bezige bij: sinds 2011 heeft hij bijna twintig stukken gecreëerd en in 2015 werd hij artistiek directeur van het Khashabi Theatre.

Met The Museum brengt hij een gevaarlijk machtsspel op het podium: ‘Geweld is niet iets dat je alleen bij enkelingen treft, het is deel van elk van ons.’

The Museum reflecteert over een terroristische aanval. Waarom dat onderwerp?

Voor The Museum wilden het team en ik het concept terrorisme of extremisme onderzoeken. We hadden wat moeite met de manieren waarop we doorgaans over zulke onderwerpen reflecteren. Je neemt namelijk heel gemakkelijk je toevlucht tot een erg politiek standpunt, en je gebruikt makkelijk woorden en beschrijvingen die gedefinieerd zijn door mensen met macht. We wilden doelbewust een andere manier vinden om over terrorisme te praten dan hoe het systeem het ons oplegt, als ‘iets slechts dat mensen doen’.

Natuurlijk is het iets slechts, maar klopt niet om een groot verschil te maken tussen oorlog en terrorisme, zoals het systeem doet. Bij oorlog zijn meer geld en meer macht gemoeid.

Dat is volgens ons het enige verschil. Maar doordat een oorlog geïnitieerd wordt door een staat, heeft hij zogezegd bestaansrecht.

The Museum voert twee figuren op: een terrorist en een politie-inspecteur. Twee tegenstanders, kun je zeggen. Kun je ons wat meer over hen vertellen?

Inderdaad. We hebben anderhalf jaar aan dit project gewerkt. We wilden een structuur vinden waarin we het individuele terrorisme konden confronteren met het terrorisme van het systeem. Daarom hebben we elk van deze vormen van terrorisme gelinkt aan één personage. De individuele terrorist wordt gerepresenteerd door iemand die een terroristische aanval heeft uitgevoerd in een museum voor moderne kunst. Door dat te doen, dacht hij de wereld te kunnen veranderen. Hij koos de kunst als doelwit, en kinderen als slachtoffers – kinderen die naar het museum waren gebracht om iets over het leven bij te leren. Het tweede personage is de speurder. Alles wat het systeem denkt over hoe het leven zou moeten zijn, brengt hij met zich mee. Door die twee types terrorisme op één plek samen te brengen, proberen we om niet wanhopig met maar één van beide bezig te zijn. Je kunt ook niet zomaar zeggen voor wie jij het zou opnemen en dat maakt de personages net zo interessant.

Ze verenigen twee tegengestelde manieren om het leven te zien, maar beiden proberen te achterhalen hoe het zou moeten.

Hoe en waar ontmoeten de personages elkaar?

Het stuk brengt de speurder en de gevangengenomen terrorist samen in de nacht voor diens executie. Ze zijn alleen in een kamer, niemand kan hen zien, dus ze kunnen doen wat ze maar willen. Die setting biedt hun de kans om heel gevaarlijke spelletjes te spelen.

Beiden zullen die nacht, in die kamer, de grenzen van het geweld en het kwaad aftasten.

En om dat te doen zullen ze hun macht op alle mogelijke manieren inzetten. Geweld is duidelijk niet iets dat je alleen bij enkelingen treft, maar iets wat deel is van elk van ons.

In de korte beschrijving van het stuk blijven de personages vrij abstract: ze worden niet geografisch geïdentificeerd of gecontextualiseerd. Heb je dat bewust gedaan om je buiten bepaalde debatten te houden?

Zo heb ik theater het liefst. Ik ben niet echt geïnteresseerd in heel persoonlijke personages. Ik ben geïnteresseerd in acteurs die een ruimte delen met het publiek, die een verhaal brengen en belangrijke vragen stellen. De cruciaalste problemen zouden gewoon erg menselijk moeten zijn, los van een specifieke plek of een specifiek land. Door met basismateriaal aan de slag te gaan, wil ik uitvissen hoe ik dat in een structuur kan passen die voor een publiek kan komen.

In dit stuk is de ontmoeting met het publiek erg sterk. We hebben te maken met drie verschillende lagen theater tegelijk. We hebben het over een terroristische aanval, die eigenlijk gecreëerd is om een film te zijn. Mensen doen aanvallen om ze te kunnen filmen.

Het publiek kijkt ernaar op schermen. De aanval is dus een geënsceneerde productie.

Er is zorgvuldig over nagedacht hoe hij eruit moet zien, hoe hij moet klinken, wanneer hij uitgezonden moet worden… Aan de andere kant is de executie van een gevangene door de staat ook theater. Het is de bedoeling dat mensen ernaar kijken, ze wordt op film vastgelegd, ze komt op tv en in de media. Ook dat gebeurt in een bepaalde stijl die aan een publiek wordt gepresenteerd. En dan is er dit stuk, The Museum. We creëren drie situaties en we proberen uit te zoeken hoe we die bij elkaar kunnen brengen op eenzelfde podium.

Eigenlijk hebben we niet zozeer te maken met personages op zich, maar met wat het publiek ziet en denkt, wat de acteurs het publiek proberen te doen denken of voelen. Het gaat niet over Palestina, niet over de Verenigde Staten. Het gaat gewoon over ons als mensen.

Je gebruikt een museum, wat ook een erg geënsceneerde context of ruimte is. Wat betekent dat voor jou? Je hebt het over het museum als een ruimte voor opvoeding en geschiedenis. Waarom kies je precies een museum als plaats van een aanval?

Een museum vond ik een logische plek: wanneer je macht hebt én de sleutels van een museum, dan schrijf je geschiedenis, dan schrijf je wat er echt gebeurd is. Ik denk dat het slim is om net daar een aanval te situeren. We wilden er niet een of andere gek aan het moorden laten slaan. Nee, we hebben het over iemand met een Master in de beeldende kunsten. Hij heeft gestudeerd, hij begrijpt waar het leven om draait, waar kunst om draait.

Hij was ervan overtuigd dat hij op die manier de wereld kon veranderen. Net zoals ik hoop dat ik iets kan veranderen in de wereld door dit stuk te maken. Het schept een band tussen kunst en terrorisme. En dat is belangrijk, want ik wil een verbintenis met de onderwerpen die ik in mijn stukken behandel.

Dus is The Museum eigenlijk een stuk over hoe we deze aanval zouden moeten zien.

Hoe we hem zouden moeten begrijpen. Meestal horen we alleen wat machtige staten over zo’n onderwerp te vertellen hebben. We horen allerlei verschillende media. We kennen terrorisme op de manier waarop de Verenigde Staten het ons willen doen begrijpen. En dat is niet correct. Natuurlijk is het complete waanzin om mensen te vermoorden zoals ik het toon in het stuk, maar het is ook waanzin om in een vliegtuig te stappen en zomaar duizenden mensen in één minuut te vermoorden. Ik zeg ook niet dat iemand die vijftig kinderen ombrengt in een museum gewelddadiger is dan iemand in een kantoor in Tel Aviv of waar dan ook in Israël die mensen ombrengt in Gaza, gewoon door op een knopje te drukken. Het is hetzelfde. Dus laat ons het onderwerp vanuit verschillende invalshoeken bekijken. Dat is wat wij proberen te doen.

Het conflict dat je in The Museum ensceneert, doet denken aan een van je vorige stukken, New Middle East, dat ook een machtsverhouding opvoert tussen een terdoodveroordeelde en een staatsfunctionaris, in dit geval de beul. Hun machtsverhouding verschuift in de loop van de voorstelling. Hoe verhouden die twee stukken zich tot elkaar?

Het grootste verschil tussen New Middle East en The Museum is de inzet van de strijd.

In New Middle East vechten beide personages om te leven en te overleven. In The Museum hebben ze geen probleem met doodgaan. Het conflict draait net om de betekenis van hun dood. Dat is een groot verschil: niet vechten voor je leven, maar voor de betekenis van je leven. Het genereert ook een heel andere esthetica. Het nieuwe stuk is heel clean en gebruikt elementen van het modernisme. Het visualiseert wat staten kunnen doen om te moorden zonder al te veel vuil of bloed. Gewoon een klein spuitje, rustig, zonder een enkele gil, zonder in het rond spattend bloed.

We denken even terug aan Parallel Time, het stuk dat je in 2014 met het Al-Midan Theatre maakte, en waardoor dat theater zijn subsidies kwijtraakte. Hoe is de situatie in Haifa vandaag wat bepaalde narratieven betreft?

Vandaag werk ik voor het Khashabi Theatre, een onafhankelijk Palestijns theater in Haifa. Die groep bestaat uit onafhankelijke Palestijnse kunstenaars. Samen hebben we besloten dat we een plaats en een theater nodig hebben die onafhankelijk zijn: ze krijgen geen Israëlisch geld, zijn niet verbonden met de mainstreamcultuur. Als we niet gebonden zijn aan de staat om onze producties te maken, dan produceren we wat we maar willen op die plek. In die zin zijn we vrijer. We zijn blij om hier te zijn, in bezet Palestina, omdat het ons land is. Maar er is geen plaats voor ons in het culturele veld. In het Khashabi Theatre kiezen we ervoor onze verantwoordelijkheid voor het maken van onze kunst op te nemen.

Het is onze vorm van verzet en onze manier om onze identiteit te behouden. En het zorgt ervoor dat we niet alleen met onze mensen kunnen praten, maar met iedereen in de wereld.

Het is cruciaal om zonder regels en beperkingen te kunnen creëren, zonder dat iemand zegt: ‘Hier mag je het niet over hebben.’ Nadat het Al-Midan Theatre in Haifa was opgedoekt, kozen we ervoor de connecties te verbreken. Nu kampen we met andere problemen, natuurlijk, maar we maken tenminste wat we willen en we reizen er de wereld mee rond.

Au moment où nous nous entretenons avec Bashar Murkus sur sa dernière pièce, The Museum, il profite de quelques jours de répit. Le moment idéal pour une interview, affirme-t-il, parce que cela permet de prendre quelque distance du processus de création. Le jeune auteur dramatique et metteur en scène est un homme actif : depuis 2011, il a créé près d’une vingtaine de pièces et depuis 2015, il est le directeur artistique du Khashabi Theatre.

Avec The Museum, il met en scène un jeu de pouvoir dangereux : « la violence n’est pas le propre d’une personne en particulier, elle fait partie de tous les êtres humains. »

The Museum traite d’une attaque terroriste. Pourquoi avoir choisi ce sujet spécifique ?

Pour The Museum, l’équipe et moi avons choisi d’explorer le concept de terrorisme ou d’extrémisme. Nous avons rencontré quelques difficultés avec nos modes de réflexion sur ce sujet, parce qu’on se retrouve facilement à en discuter d’un point de vue très politique, en utilisant des mots et des descriptions définis par les détenteurs du pouvoir. Or nous souhaitions délibérément trouver une manière d’aborder la question du terrorisme différemment de celle dont le système le voit : « une mauvaise chose que les gens commettent ».

C’est une mauvaise chose évidemment, mais ce n’est pas correct de faire une énorme différence entre la guerre et le terrorisme, comme le fait le système. Selon nous, la seule différence est que la guerre implique plus d’argent et de pouvoir et que le fait d’être engagée par un État la justifie.

The Museum met en scène deux personnages : le terroriste et l’inspecteur de police.

On pourrait dire deux antagonistes. Pouvez-vous nous en dire un peu plus à leur sujet ?

En effet. Nous avons travaillé un an et demi à ce projet. Nous désirions trouver une structure dans laquelle nous pouvions mettre en regard le terrorisme individuel avec le terrorisme du système et les réunir sur scène. Nous avons donc relié chacune des formes de terrorisme à un personnage. Le terrorisme individuel est représenté par celui qui a commis un attentat dans un musée d’art moderne. Il pensait changer le monde par son acte. Il a choisi de s’en prendre à l’art et de tuer des enfants qu’on a emmenés là pour leur apprendre la vie. Le second personnage est l’investigateur. Il porte à la scène tout ce que le système estime que la vie devrait être. En réunissant deux types de terrorisme dans le même espace, nous ne tentons pas désespérément de confronter les deux, de nous ranger du côté de l’un ou de l’autre. Et c’est ce qui rend les personnages si intéressants. Ils réunissent deux conceptions opposées de la vie et tous deux tentent de comprendre ce qu’elle devrait être.

Comment les deux personnages se rencontrent-ils ?

La pièce réunit un investigateur et un terroriste condamné à mort dans la nuit qui précède l’exécution de ce dernier. Ils sont seuls dans une pièce, personne ne peut les voir.

Ils peuvent y faire ce qu’ils veulent. Le cadre leur offre la possibilité de jouer des jeux très 13

dangereux. Cette nuit-là, dans cette pièce, tous veulent tester les limites de la violence et du mal en utilisant leur pouvoir de toutes les manières possibles. La violence n’est manifestement pas le propre d’une personne en particulier, elle fait partie de tous les êtres humains.

Dans la courte description de la pièce, les personnages restent quelque peu abstraits, au sens où ils ne sont pas identifiés ni contextualisés sur le plan géographique.

Est-ce un choix sciemment opéré pour éviter certains débats ?

C’est ainsi que je préfère le théâtre. Je ne suis pas vraiment intéressé par des personnages qui incarnent des personnalités très spécifiques, mais par des acteurs qui partagent le même espace que le public et tentent de raconter une histoire qui touche à des questions importantes. Le sujet principal devrait être très humain, très universel, non pas associé à un lieu ou un pays spécifique. En travaillant la matière initiale, je souhaite découvrir la meilleure façon de la couler dans une structure susceptible de se déployer face à un public.

Dans cette pièce, la rencontre avec le public est très puissante. Nous touchons à trois différentes strates de théâtre en même temps. Nous parlons d’un attentat terroriste, au fond imaginé pour être un film. Les gens commettent des attentats pour les filmer. Le public le regarde sur des écrans. Une attaque est une production soigneusement mise en scène sur le plan des images, du son, de la diffusion… D’autre part, l’exécution du prisonnier par un État est aussi du théâtre. Il faut que les gens la voient, la filme, la diffuse à la télévision et sur les réseaux sociaux. Les États la présentent aussi au public selon un certain style. Et puis, il y a cette pièce que nous créons, The Museum. Nous y jouons avec trois créations de situations théâtrales et nous tentons de découvrir comment elles pourraient se rencontrer sur une même scène. En ce sens, nous ne sommes pas vraiment préoccupés par les personnages en tant que tels, mais par ce que le public voit et pense, par ce que les acteurs tentent de faire penser ou ressentir au public. Il ne s’agit pas de la Palestine ni des États-Unis. Il s’agit de nous en tant qu’êtres humains.

Vous utilisez le musée qui est également un contexte ou un espace très mis en scène.

Quelle en est la signification pour vous ? Vous parliez du musée comme d’un espace d’apprentissage et d’histoire. Pourquoi avez-vous délibérément choisi le musée comme lieu d’un attentat ?

Le pas en direction du musée m’a semblé logique : quand on a le pouvoir et les clés du musée, on écrit l’Histoire et ce qui s’est « réellement déroulé ». Je pense qu’un attentat dans ce lieu est un scénario habile, astucieux. Nous ne voulions pas mettre en scène un fou furieux qui tue des gens. Non, il s’agit de quelqu’un qui détient un Master en arts plastiques. Il a étudié, il comprend ce qu’est la vie et ce qu’est l’art. Il se dit que par cet attentat, il pourrait changer le monde. De même que moi, en créant cette pièce, j’espère changer quelque chose, partout dans le monde. C’est ce qui relie intimement l’art et le terrorisme. Voilà qui est important pour moi, parce que je désire avoir des liens avec les sujets que j’aborde dans mes pièces.

The Museum est donc véritablement une pièce sur la manière dont nous devrions considérer, comprendre, lire cette attaque. De manière générale, nous n’entendons que ce que les États puissants disent sur ce sujet. Nous entendons tous ces médias. Nous connaissons le terrorisme du point de vue dont les États-Unis veulent que nous le comprenions. Et c’est mensonger. Bien sûr que c’est complètement fou de tuer des gens de la sorte, mais entrer dans un avion et tuer des milliers de gens en une minute, c’est complètement fou aussi. Je ne peux pas affirmer que quelqu’un qui tue cinquante enfants dans un musée soit plus violent que quelqu’un qui est assis dans une pièce à Tel-Aviv ou n’importe où en Israël et tue des gens à Gaza en appuyant simplement sur un bouton. C’est la même chose.

Alors, parlons du sujet à partir de différents points de vue. C’est que nous essayons de faire.

Le conflit que vous allez porter à la scène dans The Museum semble lié à une de vos pièces précédentes, New Middle East, qui s’articule aussi autour de la relation de pouvoir entre quelqu’un qui est condamné à mort et un représentant officiel de l’État, en l’occurrence le bourreau. Les rapports de force changent au cours de la pièce. Comment mettez-vous ces deux pièces en parallèle ?

La plus grande différence entre New Middle East et The Museum est la raison pour laquelle ils se battent. Dans New Middle East, les deux personnages se battent pour vivre et rester en vie. Dans The Museum, la mort n’est pas le problème, ils se battent à propos du sens de leur mort. Ne pas se battre pour sa vie, mais pour le sens de sa vie, cela constitue une immense différence. Et cela génère une esthétique très différente aussi. La nouvelle pièce est très épurée et fait appel à des éléments du modernisme. Elle montre ce que des États sont en mesure de faire pour tuer sans trop de gravats ou de sang. Juste une petite injection, calmement, sans que personne crie. Sans effusion de sang ni giclée d’hémoglobine.

En repensant à Parallel Time – la pièce que vous avez créée en 2014 avec l’Al-Midan Theatre et qui a entraîné la suppression des subventions de ce théâtre – quelle est aujourd’hui la situation à Haïfa en ce qui concerne certains récits ?

Aujourd’hui, je travaille au Khashabi théâtre à Haïfa, un théâtre palestinien indépendant composé d’artistes palestiniens indépendants. Ensemble, nous avons décidé qu’il nous fallait un lieu et un théâtre indépendant, c’est-à-dire qui ne reçoit pas d’argent israélien, qui n’est pas lié à la culture dominante. Et comme nous ne sommes aucunement liés à l’État pour nos productions, nous pouvons produire ce que nous voulons dans ce lieu. En ce sens, nous sommes plus libres. Ici, en Palestine occupée, nous sommes heureux de vivre sur notre terre, mais il n’y a pas de place pour nous sur la scène culturelle. Au Khashabi théâtre, nous avons décidé d’assumer notre responsabilité dans la création de notre art. C’est notre forme de résistance et notre manière de sauver notre identité et cela nous permet de nous adresser à notre peuple et à tout un chacun dans le monde. Il est fondamental de pouvoir créer sans aucune règle ni restriction, sans personne pour nous dire « vous ne pouvez pas parler de la sorte ». Après la fermeture de l’Al-Midan Theatre à Haïfa, nous avons choisi de simplement rompre les liens. Maintenant, nous faisons bien sûr face à d’autres problèmes, mais nous pouvons au moins créer ce que nous désirons et tourner à travers le monde entier avec nos productions.

NOT FIGHTING ABOUT MY LIFE, BUT ABOUT THE MEANING OF MY LIFE A CONVERSATION WITH BASHAR MURKUS

When we spoke to Bashar Murkus about his latest play, The Museum, he was taking a few days off. It was the perfect moment for an interview, he said, because it offered some distance from the creative process.

The young theatre maker is a busy man: since 2011 he has created almost twenty pieces and in 2015 he became the artistic director of the Khashabi Theatre.

In The Museum, he stages a dangerous power game: ‘Violence is not something that belongs to one person, it is part of all human beings.’

The Museum reflects on a terrorist attack. Why did you choose this particular topic?

For The Museum, me and the team chose to research the concept of terrorism or extremism. We had some difficulties with our ways of reflecting on the topic because you easily find yourself talking about it from a very political point of view, using words and descriptions that are defined by the people in power. We deliberately wanted to find a way to talk about terrorism in a different way than the system sees it – ‘a bad thing that people do’. It is a bad thing for sure, but it is wrong to make an enormous distinction between war and terrorism, as the system does. According to us, the only difference is that war involves more money and more power. It has the right to exist because it is initiated by the state.

The Museum stages two figures: the terrorist and the police inspector. Two strong opponents, one would imagine. Can you tell us a bit more about them?

Indeed. We worked on this project for a year and a half. We wanted to find a structure in which we could confront individual terrorism with systemic terrorism, to bring them together onstage. So we linked each of the forms of terrorism to one character. Individual terrorism is represented by someone who has committed a terrorist attack in a modern art museum. He thought that this act would change the world. He chose to attack art and to kill children, children who had been brought to the museum to learn about life. The second character is the inspector. He brings with him all of the system’s presumptions and expectations about how life should be. Our intention in placing two kinds of terrorism side by side is not to attempt to deal desperately with one kind. It is difficult to predict how you might identify with each of the characters, and that is what makes them so interesting. They reunite two opposite ways of seeing life and both are trying to figure out how it should be.

How do the two characters come together?

The play brings together an inspector and a terrorist, depicted here as a prisoner, on the night before the prisoner’s execution. They are alone in a room; nobody can see them.

They can do whatever they want in this room. This setting offers them the chance to play very dangerous games. Each of them tests the limits of violence and wickedness in the room that night, exerting their power in every possible way. Violence is clearly not something that belongs to just one person, it is part of all human beings.

In the short description of the piece, the characters stay rather abstract in the sense that they are not identified or contextualized geographically. Is that something that you consciously did to avoid certain debates?

This is how I love theatre the most. I’m not really interested in very personal characters.

I’m interested in actors being in the same space as the audience, trying to tell a story, touching on important questions. The main issues should be very human, not connected to one specific place or country. By using basic material, I want to explore how to put it in a structure that can take place in front of the audience.

In this piece, the meeting with the audience is vey powerful. We deal with three different layers of theatre at the same time. We are talking about a terrorist attack, which is actually created to be a movie. People commit attacks to film them. The audience watches it on screens. The attack is a carefully planned production in terms of how it should look, how it should sound, when it should be broadcasted… On the other hand, the state’s execution of the prisoner is also theatre. People should see it and they will film it and broadcast it on TV and in the media. They too have a certain style to show it to the audience.

And then there is the piece itself, The Museum, as a third layer. The piece plays with three theatrical creations of situations and we try to find out how they can be brought together on one stage. In this sense, we do not really deal with characters as such, but with what the audience sees and thinks, what the actors are trying to make the audience think or feel.

It’s not about Palestine, it’s not about the USA. It’s just about us as people.

You use the museum, which is also a very staged context or space. What does it mean to you? You talked about the museum as a space for learning and history. Why did you specifically choose the museum as the space of an attack?

The step towards the museum seemed a logical one to me: when you have the power and the keys to a museum, you have the power to write history and to write what really happened. I think it’s clever to stage an attack inside a museum. We didn’t want to bring in a crazy person killing people. No, we are talking about someone who has an M.A. in visual arts. He studied, he understands what life is about, what art is about. He thought that in this way, he would be able to change the world. In making this piece, I too hope to change something all over the world. This implies that there is a close connection between art and terrorism. Which is important because I want to be related to the topics that I address in my pieces.

So The Museum is really a piece about how we should see this attack. How to understand it. We usually only hear what the powerful states say on this subject. We hear all these media. We know terrorism in the way that the USA wants us to understand it. And that is false. Of course it is really crazy to kill people like that, but it is also crazy to step into an airplane and just kill thousands of people in one minute. I can’t say that someone who kills fifty children in a museum is more violent than someone sitting in a room in Tel Aviv or anywhere else in Israel and killing people in Gaza just by pressing a button. It’s the same.

So let’s talk about the topic from different points of view. That is what we’re trying to do.

The conflict you will be staging in The Museum seems related to a previous piece of yours, New Middle East, which also shows a power relation between someone sentenced to death and a state official, in this case the executioner. Their power relation shifts during the piece. How would you compare these pieces to one another?

The biggest difference between New Middle East and The Museum is what the characters are fighting for. In New Middle East, both characters are fighting to live and stay alive.

In The Museum, there is no problem with dying, but they are fighting about the meaning of their death. It’s a huge difference, not fighting about my life but about the meaning of my life. And it generates a very different aesthetic. The new piece is very clean and uses 17

elements of modernism. It visualizes what states can do to kill without a lot of dirt or blood. Just a little injection, calmly, without anybody screaming. Without blood spraying around.

Thinking back on Parallel Time, the piece you made in 2014 with Al-Midan Theatre, which caused the theatre to lose its funding, what is the situation today in Haifa concerning certain narratives?

I currently work at Khashabi theatre, which is an independent Palestinian theatre in Haifa. The theatre consists entirely of independent Palestinian artists. We decided together that we needed a place and a theatre that is independent, that does not receive any Israeli funding, and which is not connected to mainstream culture. And as we are not connected to the state in dealing with our productions, we can produce whatever we want here. In that sense, we are much freer. Here in occupied Palestine, we are happy to be here because this is our land, but there is no space for us in the cultural scene. At the Khashabi theatre, we chose to take our responsibility in the making of our art. It’s our form of resistance and our way to save our identity, ensuring that we can talk to our people and to everyone in the world. It’s crucial to be able to create without any rules or constrictions, without anyone saying ‘you can’t talk like that’. After the Al-Midan Theatre in Haifa closed down, we decided just to break our connections. Now we are dealing with different problems of course, but at least we can create what we want and tour all over the world with it.

Voor hun nieuwste voorstelling slaat het trio van de KOE de handen in elkaar met Lineke Rijxman van het toneelgezelschap Mugmetdegoudentand.

Een samenwerking die al 27 jaar in de lucht hing, en nu eindelijk landt – al werkten Lineke en Willem de Wolf eerder al samen in bijvoorbeeld Hannah & Martin of Vermogen. Het denkproces rond seks(e)(n) vertrok vanuit een roman van Goethe maar gaat – zoals wel vaker bij deze gezelschappen – eerder over hoe (persoonlijke) thematieken op de scène brengen en over het toneelmaken zelf.

Een maand voor de première schuiven we bij de vier makers aan de keukentafel en krijgen we een inkijk in het creatieproces.

Het vertrekpunt van de voorstelling lag bij de roman Die Wahlverwandtschaften.

Vanwaar kwam de keuze om rond dit werk van Goethe te werken?

NATALI BROODS: Het boek van Goethe was een idee van mij. Ik was vooral getriggerd door het plot van het boek: een koppel nodigt twee mensen uit, wat leidt tot het vermengen van verschillende relaties. Maar eigenlijk is het boek ongelooflijk gedateerd en gaat het over het conservatieve idee van het huwelijk. Lineke en ik merkten al snel dat we er niet veel mee konden.

Is het boek er dan volledig uit verdwenen?

WILLEM DE WOLF: Als je het boek zelf hebt gelezen, herken je waarschijnlijk wel nog bepaalde elementen in de voorstelling. Het dilemma waar we vanaf dag één al mee zitten, is dat in de tijd van Goethe de natuur een metafoor was voor je eigen seksualiteit. In de wilde natuur zag je een spiegeling van je eigen wildheid terug. De vraag is dan wat er met die metafoor én je seksualiteit gebeurt wanneer de natuur zoals nu zo onder druk staat.

De natuur in Goethe’s boek is helemaal geprojecteerd in de tuin, alles gaat over de tuin, het uitbreiden ervan, cultiveren, plannenmaken en alles speelt zich er af, ook de kruisingen.

LINEKE RIJXMAN: Ik denk dat het goed is om te zeggen dat het boek weliswaar het theoretische startpunt is geweest, maar dat we ook al snel uitgekomen zijn op de titel ‘seks(e)(n)’. Dat geeft ons veel meer vrijheid dan iedere keer te denken hoe wat we doen zich verhoudt tot het boek. We zijn wel met twee mannen en twee vrouwen en we hebben het wel over kruisen en ook over natuur en milieu en seksualiteit, maar de voortdurende referentie naar het boek hield ons tegen om het over het nu te hebben en over ons.

NB: We dachten wel nog even dat we over het boek moesten vertellen, maar dat gaf ons een oud gevoel. Bij We hebben een/het boek (niet) gelezen deden we dit, door telkens te vertellen over het boek in plaats van het gewoon te spelen. In The Marx Sisters of Hannah & Martin kozen we dan weer om het te hebben over het leven van de auteurs, maar ook die procedures kennen we te goed. We hebben dus gezocht naar een andere manier om toch met dat materiaal aan de slag te gaan. We beschouwen het, maar onze invulling is echt persoonlijk.

Even terug naar de titel, jullie spelen met seks, sekse, seksen en kiezen bewust niet voor het woord ‘gender’. Zit hier een natuur-cultuurvraagstuk in? En hoe gaan jullie om met ambiguïteiten die zowel in de culturele als biologische benadering voorkomen die de binaire visie op sekse en gender onderuithalen?

WDW: Dat is inderdaad een complexe materie waar we vooral op het niveau van taal mee bezig zijn: dat het ontwikkelen en ontdekken van een biologie in jezelf, van het ontdekken van een voorkeur in jezelf, dat dat altijd nog vertaald moet worden in taal – ook naar jezelf toe. Ook dat het heel ingewikkelde processen zijn om zelf aan te geven wat het verschil is daar waar het zich van nature aandient, of daar waar het zich door sociale omstandigheden aandient. We zijn specifiek steeds op zoek geweest naar scènes waarin dat conflict naar voren komt.

PVDE: Het is evenwel niet de bedoeling om daar standpunten in te nemen. We willen eerder het spanningsveld opzoeken tussen een natuurlijke geaardheid of oorsprong of genetische kaart en hoe je culturele identiteit is gevormd. Woorden spelen hier inderdaad een belangrijke rol in, om bepaalde zaken meer betekenis te geven, om een jargon te ontwikkelen. Je hebt meer en meer labels nodig, om telkens jezelf te onderscheiden als individu in een groter geheel. En dat groter geheel heb je ook voortdurend nodig om jezelf in te kaderen en te identificeren. Dat groter geheel zijn de mensen waar je je tegenover afzet, maar ook de mensen waar je je goed bij voelt. Waar je je bij betrokken voelt. En dan is er nog de noodzaak om je telkens binnen dat label waar je je van bedient, nog te gaan differentiëren in nog een kleiner of ander label. Het is elke keer een kwestie van je bevrijden uit iets dat onderdrukkend wordt. Telkens wanneer er een woord voor bestaat, wordt het ook onderdrukkend en heb je nieuwe woorden nodig om je daaruit te helpen, enzovoort.

WDW: Je kan het ook het verfijnen van je persoonlijkheid of individualiteit noemen.

En dat moet je in zo’n proces ook persoonlijk nemen en vervolgens ook uitvergroten in tekst en chargeren want dat is het meest interessant. We zijn daar met z’n vieren ook niet gelijk in, niet alleen qua sekse maar binnen de seksen denken we er anders over. Ook politiek bijvoorbeeld. Het is natuurlijk ook een heel politiek thema.

Zowel voor de KOE als voor gezelschappen met wie ze samenwerken – Mugmetdegoudentand, tg STAN… – is het persoonlijke altijd politiek. Het gaat over jullie, wie je bent op scène, wie in het echt en altijd heel politiek, altijd alles in vraag stellend.

Ook hier dus?

PVDE: Klopt. De tegenstellingen onder elkaar zorgen ervoor dat er nooit een duidelijk standpunt wordt ingenomen. Het heeft niets met laf zijn te maken, maar eerder met het feit dat er geen één pasklaar antwoord is. We gaan de paradoxen niet uit de weg, we proberen ze door te trekken in de manier van spelen en denken over spelen, wat heel de tijd in beweging is. We kiezen niet voor iets heel specifieks en afgelijnd. De polen op zich zijn niet belangrijk, maar wel de dynamiek tussen die polen. Daar draait het om, en dat is ook waar het in het leven om te doen is. Als je echt met elkaar wil samenleven, dan zul je voortdurend moeten wisselen van plek en moeten bewegen tussen verschillende standpunten. Anders sluit je doelgroepen uit en word je onmogelijk om mee samen te leven, ook voor jezelf.

Dus moeten we altijd inconsequent blijven.

Voor seks(e)(n) kozen jullie om met z’n vieren te spelen. Hebben jullie ook overwogen om mensen met een andere seksuele voorkeur of genderidentiteit te betrekken?

NB: Nee. We hadden in de eerste plaats zin om samen een werk te maken met ons vier, toen kwam het boek en dan veranderde met Lineke’s idee de titel naar seks(e)(n). Het is dus gaandeweg geworden wat het is, maar we vertrekken voor voorstellingen altijd vanuit de vraag met wie gaan we samenwerken.

PVDE: En het heeft niets te maken met het uitsluiten, want daar hebben we natuurlijk al gigantisch veel over gesproken. Stel dat we hier nu met een aantal mensen zouden samenwerken, waardoor alle genderverhoudingen of identiteiten aan bod zouden komen, dan nog blijft de vraag: hoe ga je daarmee om? Mogen zij dan enkel zichzelf spelen, met

hun eigen geaardheid en genderidentiteit – wat ik heel paternalistisch zou vinden? Heel de toneelspeelkunst wordt op een bepaald moment in vraag gesteld als we geen anderen meer mogen spelen.

LR: Tegelijk gaat de voorstelling vooral over onszelf. Zelfs als we zouden besluiten dat we een scène zouden willen maken over de jongens die op elkaar vallen en de meisjes die op elkaar vallen en alles wat je ertussen kan verzinnen, dan gaat het nog steeds over ons.

WDW: Enigszins worden we hierbij natuurlijk beschermd door het medium theater.

Wanneer Natali en ik een scène hebben over onze seksuele voorkeuren, weet je nooit of de tekst echt van ons is of van iemand anders. We husselen de teksten sowieso door elkaar: de tekst die bedoeld is voor de één, kan uiteindelijk gezegd worden door de ander.

Een tekst geschreven door een man kan zo ook door een vrouw gespeeld worden en omgekeerd. Daarbij bewerken we ook elkaars teksten. Vooral de tekstverdeling is hier interessant. Meestal verdelen we sowieso laat, maar qua genderverdeling brengt dit wel een extra laag naar boven.

NB: Er spelen natuurlijk ook andere factoren mee: de ene wil de verdeling iets logischer houden, sommigen willen een bepaalde tekst heel graag spelen. Dus het is niet enkel manvrouw. Het gaat ook over waar iemand zin in heeft om te spelen.

WDW: Wat wel erg anders is voor mij, is dat Lineke erbij is. Omdat het nu gaat over twee mannen, twee vrouwen, wit, in gepriviligeerde omstandigheden, die kunnen nadenken over mode, kunst, tuinen, de wereld, reizen, seksualiteit. Seksualiteit is een onderwerp, waarover je praat, waarover je in therapie kunt, waarin je een soort vrijheid kan ontwikkelen allemaal wel of niet zogenaamd. Het gaat allemaal over wie we zijn. Het feit dat we niet met z’n drieën zijn maar dat Lineke erbij is, verandert de verhoudingen. Natali is niet meer de enige vrouw bijvoorbeeld.

Komt #MeToo ook aan bod in het stuk? En hoe gaan jullie er mee om?

LR: Het woord zelf is er nu uit, maar het thema zit er sowieso wel in. Het zou fijn zijn als we het woord niet nodig hebben om het thema toch te behandelen.

WDW: Het is met begrip voor de fijngevoeligheden maar tegelijkertijd is het ook met een bulldozer ten aanzien van die fijngevoeligheden.

PVDE: Maar vanaf het moment dat we voorzichtig moeten beginnen worden, moeten we echt nadenken over onze stiel. Kunnen we dat dan nog wel doen? Dat is het probleem van de politieke correctheid. We willen wel heel goed weten waar we over bezig zijn en waarom we bepaalde dingen zo doen en niet anders.

WDW: Dat maakt ons werk ook interessant: wat betekent het om iemand anders te spelen? Op een gegeven moment dreigt alles appropriatie te worden en dan kan je alleen maar opkomen als jezelf en praten als jezelf, met teksten van jezelf. Dan is de fictie uit de toneelspeelkunst en filmkunst verdwenen. Dan wordt het ingewikkeld. Want we hebben de fictie en het narratief nodig.

theatre In 1994 schreef Jan Decorte zijn onnavolgbare theatertekst Bloetwollefduivel, een gitzwarte abstrahering van het ultieme stuk over het kwaad: Shakespeares Macbeth. body a.k.a. vertrekt vanuit deze iconische tekst, maar wil het kwaad bezweren en de neerwaardse spiraal ombuigen naar een extatische roes. Jan Decorte, Sigrid Vinks en het jonge multitalent Lisah Adeaga werpen hun body en soul in de strijd. Een belangrijke rol is weggelegd voor een doordeweekse pollepel.

Eind jaren 20 introduceerde Nâzım Hikmet het vrije vers in de Turkse poëzie en werd zo de eerste Turkse moderne dichter. Mensenlandschappen, zijn absolute meesterwerk, schreef hij grotendeels in gevangenschap. Het vijfhonderd bladzijden tellende epos raakte pas na zijn dood gepubliceerd, opgedeeld in vijf ‘boeken’. Michiel Vandevelde zette vorig jaar Book I op het toneel in opdracht van het festival steierische herbst. Nu volgt ook Book II. In the late 1920s, Nâzım Hikmet introduced free verse to Turkish poetry, and was thus the first modern Turkish poet. He wrote the majority of Human Landscapes, his magnum opus, while in prison. The five hundred-page epic was only published posthumously, divided into five ‘books’. Michiel Vandevelde staged Book I last year, commissioned by the steierische herbst festival. Book II now follows.

MICHIEL VANDEVELDEBE Human Landscapes – Book II

Voor Book I, dat zich afspeelt in een derdeklassetreinwagon, koos Vandevelde voor een donkere, intieme setting. De vijf performers bewegen zich traag voort tussen het publiek dat op de grond zit of ligt.

In Book II komen de rijken uit de eersteklassewagons aan het woord. Tegenover hun verhalen en bedenkingen bij de oorlog die er zit aan te komen, plaatst Vandevelde arbeidersliederen, live gezongen door het Brussels Brecht-Eislerkoor.

For Book I, which is set in a third-class train carriage, Vandevelde chose a dark, intimate setting. The five performers move slowly between the audience, which sits or lies on the floor.

Book II brings the wealthy people in the first-class carriage to the fore. Vandevelde juxtaposes their stories and thoughts about the impending war with workers’ songs that are sung live by Brussels Brecht-Eislerkoor.

Tijdens een meditatieve huilmarathon van bijna een uur, bevragen twee futuristische vrouwelijke personages de mechanismen die van persoonlijke emoties een politiek fenomeen maken. In een choreografie met video en grote vellen papier – tegelijk betogingsborden en drogende was – worden hun tranen van zwakte een daad van politieke kracht.

During a meditative crying marathon that lasts almost an hour, two futuristic female characters question the mechanisms that turn personal emotions into political phenomena. In a choreography that uses video and large sheets of paper – simultaneously protest signs and drying laundry – their tears of weakness become an act of political power.

Water Will (in Melody) is een choreografie voor vier performers die vertrekt vanuit melodrama. Door taal en verschillende begrippen van ‘de wil’ tegenover elkaar te plaatsen ontstaat een dystopische fantasie vol verlangens, verbeelding en gevoelens van een naderend einde.

Doorheen dit proces van vervreemding, uittreding en materialisatie, raakt het melodrama aan de grenzen van zijn eigen bestaan.

Water Will (in Melody), une œuvre chorégraphique conçue pour quatre performeurs, prend pour point de départ le mélodrame. Aux prises avec le langage et des notions de « volonté », cette fantaisie dystopique devient un espace de négociation pour le désir, l’imagination et des sentiments d’une fin gagnant du terrain. Par le biais de ce processus d’aliénation, d’extériorisation et de matérialisation, ce mélodrame touche aux limites de sa propre creation.

Water Will (in Melody) is a devised choreographic work for four performers that uses melodrama as a point of departure. Wrestling with language and notions of ‘the will’, this dystopian fantasy becomes a space for negotiating desire, imagination, and feelings of an encroaching end. Through this process of alienation, exteriorization, and materialization, this melodrama touches the borders of its own making.

Bijna 10 jaar na Zeitung (2008) gebruikten Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker en Alain Franco de bouwstenen van die voorstelling om er een nieuwe mee te maken: Zeitigung. Tegen de achtergrond van een veranderde wereld en doorheen de lichamen van acht jonge dansers actualiseerden ze het werk, samen met de jonge choreograaf Louis Nam Le Van Ho. Na een internationale tournee keert de voorstelling terug naar de scène van het Kaaitheater, waar het in 2017 in première ging.

Près de dix ans après Zeitung (2008), Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker et Alain Franco reprennent les éléments essentiels de cette chorégraphie pour créer Zeitigung. Dans l’intervalle, le monde a muté et, à travers les corps de huit jeunes danseurs, ils actualisent leur propre travail – assisté par le jeune danseur-chorégraphe Louis Nam Le Van Ho. Zeitigung sera à nouveau à l’affiche du Kaaitheater, où a eu lieu la première en 2017.

The Greatest Show on Earth gaat over wie er spreekt – en wie niet. Wie er in het licht staat – en wie in de coulissen. Want geschiedenis staat niet vast, maar gaat steeds over wie ze samenstelt, ontwerpt, vertelt. En vooral over wie er deel van uitmaakt – en wie niet. De jonge makers Louis Janssens en Timo Sterckx gebruikten het boek Europeana, een zeer korte geschiedenis van de twintigste eeuw van Patrik Ourednik om een voorstelling te maken over geschiedenis, over afstuderen, over beginnen. Het zou wel eens een lang verhaal kunnen worden.

Each piece explores a different elemental dimension of abstract dance – while at the same time making associations outside dance. Together they form an intimate and multifaceted dance solo.

Là où le silence peut être intimidant et générer une atmosphère sacrale, la respiration crée du lien. Dans le concert immersif Pneuma, Ictus opte radicalement pour la respiration. Un accordéon ressemble à un poumon et un larynx pourrait parfaitement faire office de flûte. Le résultat donne un subtil bain de sons qui se diffusent à travers l’espace et l’on définit soi-même la distance à laquelle on souhaite assister à cet événement à couper le souffle.

While silence can be intimidating and evoke a sacral atmosphere, breathing fosters connection. In the immersive concert Pneuma, Ictus has radically opted for breath. An accordion becomes a lung, the flute a larynx. The result is a subtle soundscape that unfurls across the space, and you can decide on the distance from which you want to experience this (breath)taking event.

Daar waar stilte intimiderend kan zijn en een sacrale sfeer oproept, zorgt ademhaling voor verbinding. In het immersieve concert Pneuma kiest Ictus radicaal voor het ademen. Een accordeon lijkt net een long, een strottenhoofd zou best een fluit kunnen zijn. Het resultaat is een subtiel klankbad dat zich verspreidt doorheen de ruimte, en waarbij je zelf de afstand bepaalt van waarop je dit adem(be)nemende gebeuren wil meemaken.
