Studio Cité orients, directs, diverts and distorts your view of the world. Step inside a driving mirror cart by yourself, form a dancing circle with your fellow audience members, or stand on the side-lines watching how people with periscopic masks try to find their way. Benjamin Vandewalle organizes an artistic funfair that offers unexpected experiences on two Brussels’ squares.

Betreed op je eentje een rijdende spiegelkar, vorm met andere toeschouwers een dansende cirkel, of blijf aan de rand staan kijken hoe mensen met periscopische maskers op, hun weg zoeken. Benjamin Vandewalle zet een artistieke kermis neer die onverwachte ervaringen biedt op twee Brusselse pleinen.

Een jaar lang werkte Jozef Wouters samen met Globe Aroma aan Underneath Which Rivers Flow. Een groep bouwers, dichters en dromers kwam wekelijks samen in Decoratelier in Molenbeek. Samen bouwden ze er verhalen, een geheime tuin vol wormgaten naar onvermoede werelden. Dankzij het TheaterFestival 2019 kun je de voorstelling nog een allerlaatste keer meemaken.

Pendant un an, Jozef Wouters a collaboré avec Globe Aroma pour Underneath Which Rivers Flow. Un groupe de bâtisseurs, poètes et rêveurs s’est réuni toutes les semaines à Decoratelier à Molenbeek. Ensemble, ils ont construit des récits, un jardin secret truffé de trous de vers menant à des univers insoupçonnés. Grâce au TheaterFestival 2019, vous pouvez assister une toute dernière fois au spectacle.

In 2017 herwerkten Salva Sanchis en Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker A Love Supreme met vier jonge, mannelijke dansers. De uitgesproken vitale voorstelling haalde vorig jaar gezwind de selectie van het TheaterFestival. Hoog tijd om je samen met de dansers opnieuw over te geven aan John Coltranes spirituele ode aan de goddelijke liefde, dit keer in de thuisbasis van Rosas in Vorst.

En 2017, Salva Sanchis et Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker ont retravaillé A Love Supreme avec quatre jeunes danseurs masculins. Un spectacle d’une grande vitalité qui a d’emblée été sélectionné pour le TheaterFestival de l'année passée. Grand temps de s’abandonner une fois de plus avec les danseurs à l’ode spirituelle de John Coltrane à l’amour suprême, cette fois dans le port d’attache de Rosas à Forest.

In 2017, Salva Sanchis and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker adapted A Love Supreme with four young, male dancers. The distinctly vibrant production was immediately selected for last year’s TheaterFestival. It is high time to join the dancers again and succumb to John Coltrane’s spiritual tribute to divine love, this time at Rosas’ home base in Forest.

Wist je dat in het Kaaitheater ooit een tapijtenwinkel huisde? Of dat in de Kaaistudio’s een brouwerij voor lambiek was gevestigd?

De Brusselse Open Monumentendagen staan dit jaar in het teken van ‘plaatsen voor kunst’ – onze theaters mogen dus niet ontbreken.

Delen van de gebouwen die anders niet toegankelijk zijn, zullen je tijdens deze rondleiding hun (architecturale) geheimen onthullen.

FRI 27, SAT 28/09 20:30 PIETER DE BUYSSER/ROBINBE De Lokvogel Een klein genootschap van goedmenende intellectuelen kiest een doodgewone man uit, en stuurt die bezield, gemanipuleerd en begeleid het politieke landschap in.

Stap 1: de democratie uitbreiden; Stap 2: het ressentiment en het identiteitsfetisjisme te rusten leggen. Als een golem uit het slib van het magisch onderbewustzijn van Europa kruipt de lokvogel recht. En slaat zijn vleugels uit.

Pieter De Buysser schreef een nieuwe tekst en regisseert o.m. Gillis Biesheuvel, die eerder met Dood Paard in de Kaaistudio’s speelde.

THU 3, FRI 4, SAT 5/10 20:30 METTE INGVARTSENDK/BE Moving in Concert Mette Ingvartsen creëert een universum waarin mensen, technologie en organische materie een abstract geheel in beweging vormen. Geïnspireerd door de manier waarop het digitale onze zintuigen prikkelt, zoekt de voorstelling naar een poëzie van plasticiteit, abstractie en verbeelding. Via licht, schaduw en reflectie openen de negen dansers een betoverend landschap waarin je als toeschouwer mag binnenstappen.

Mette Ingvartsen fait émerger un univers dans lequel des êtres humains, des technologies et des matières organiques forment un ensemble abstrait en mouvement. Inspiré par les effets du monde numérique sur nos sens, le spectacle explore une poésie de la plasticité, de l’abstraction et de l’imaginaire. À la faveur de lumière, d’ombre et de leur réflexion, les neuf danseurs ouvrent aux spectateurs un paysage enchanteur et les invitent à y entrer.

Mette Ingvartsen creates a universe in which people, technology and organic matter coexist to create an abstract set of movements. Inspired by how bodies are sensorially affected by the digital, the performance explores a poetics of plasticity, abstraction and imagination.

Drie jaar geleden, aan het begin van zijn periode als artist-in-residence in het Kaaitheater, spraken we met Benjamin Vandewalle – zoals toen te lezen in deze brochure. Hij speelde met het idee van een kunstenkermis en wilde zelfverklaarde stadschoreograaf worden.

Anno 2019 heeft die kunstenkermis vorm gekregen onder de naam Studio Cité.

Het idee van Studio Cité draag je al een aantal jaar mee. Nu is het concreet geworden.

Waar kunnen we ons aan verwachten?

Studio Cité is een soort ongewoon minifestival: tegelijk herkenbaar door zijn kermisallure, maar ook heel bevreemdend. Het kermisgehalte zit in de verzameling van kleine formats, bestaande uit dozen en installaties die op de zintuigen inspelen. Ik benader het publiek zoals een kermis dat doet en neem hen dan mee in iets dat hen in hun fundamenten door elkaar schudt. Het geheel is heel toegankelijk en heel volks, maar niet zoals een doorsnee kermis waar alles gericht is op adrenaline en eerste graad van vertier. De installaties zijn namelijk geen doorsnee attracties. Ze genereren ervaringen die terug katapulteren in het lijf van de toeschouwer, terugschieten naar hun eigen zelfbeeld. Het is een soort van loep of spiegel – de installaties werken ook vaak met spiegels. Alsof alle installaties reflecties zijn over de manier waarop we kijken naar onszelf, naar de publieke ruimte en naar elkaar.

Bij een kermis denken we vooral aan mensen die samenkomen en plezier beleven.

Bij Studio Cité gaat het dus eerder over de introspectie van elke bezoeker?

Ja, absoluut. De installaties zien er heel onschuldig uit, maar je komt er nogal heftig buiten. Inter-view is daar een goed voorbeeld van: dat ziet er heel onschuldig uit. Mensen denken dat ze naar een filmpje gaan kijken, maar wanneer ze de installatie binnengaan, worden ze geconfronteerd met hun eigen onzekerheden over hoe ze eruit zien, hoe andere mensen naar hen kijken. Ze komen soms helemaal verstild of met tranen buiten. Dat terwijl er wel opnieuw mensen staan aan te schuiven met heel veel verwachtingen.

In Studio Cité staat de perceptie centraal. Soms moet het publiek zich volledig overgeven aan jouw choreografie van de blik, maar af en toe laat je het publiek ook actiever ontdekken wat andere manieren van kijken kunnen zijn.

Inderdaad. Via de installaties steek ik mensen heel hard ‘in hun lichaam’. Je kan het als de rode draad doorheen de hele cité lezen. Het ligt ook in het verlengde van mijn zoektocht rond choreografie en hoe dit door te geven aan het publiek. Alle installaties volgen de logica van een interne choreografie: het lichaam van het publiek wordt op zo’n manier ingezet dat de bewegingen direct door het lijf van de toeschouwer lopen. In die zin gaat Studio Cité over de bewustwording van het eigen lichaam in de stad.

Wat bedoel je precies met ‘een choreografie die direct door het lijf van de toeschouwer loopt’?

Er zit geen performer tussen die de choreografie uitvoert voor de toeschouwer. Als danser/choreograaf vind ik het natuurlijk wel interessant om naar dans te kijken, maar ik heb veel meer geleerd uit de ervaring van het dansen zelf dan van ernaar te kijken. Alle installaties zijn dan ook ontstaan vanuit de wens om die prikkels en ervaringen die je als danser voelt zo ongemedieerd mogelijk door te geven aan de lichamen van de kijkers.

Zonder dat die ervaring eerst via het lichaam van een performer moet passeren. Hoewel er wel dansende lichamen zijn ingezet in Studio Cité, is dat altijd in relatie tot een publiek dat mee beweegt.

Hoe belangrijk is de relatie met de stad of met de plek waar je staat in Studio Cité ?

Waarom staat het niet gewoon in een theaterzaal?

Ik wil de publieke ruimte tijdelijk transformeren tot een plek van introspectie. De verhouding tot de stad gaat voor mij over hoe we onze omgeving beleven op een directe en fysieke manier. Elke installatie geeft een andere draai aan hoe wij de ruimte rondom ons invullen. In zekere zin wil ik die dagdagelijkse choreografie die in de stad heerst, omplooien tot iets anders. De stad wordt bepaald door dagdagelijkse, onuitgesproken maar aanwezige regels en gedragscodes in de stad en daar schuurt Studio Cité tegenaan. Ik denk dat het altijd al mijn wens is geweest – en daarom zoek ik de publieke ruimte ook telkens op – om net aan te tonen dat de openbare ruimte een soort gedeelde realiteit is. Je kan het zien als een groot theaterstuk, een grote constructie die wij onbewust aannemen als de norm.

En het is net die norm die ik wil doorprikken, waarin ik een scheur probeer te krijgen met mijn installaties.

In die dagelijkse omgeving zoek ik ook een nieuwe esthetiek. In die zin wil ik niet te veel nieuwe fysieke dingen creëren. Ik wil liever mensen anders naar hun gekende omgeving laten kijken. Door met mijn installaties hun blik te sturen, laat ik hen de stad op een nieuwe manier ervaren.

Een ander aspect van de publieke ruimte, is dat je mensen tegenkomt die die ruimte zelf ook invullen en gebruiken. Hoe ga je daar mee om?

Klopt, toen we bij de opbouw in Kopenhagen een grote container neerzetten op een plein, ontstond er meteen een gesprek met een kebab-verkoper die daar zijn wagen ook heeft staan. Hij moest zijn wagen enkele meters opschuiven en vond dat heel lastig.

Uiteindelijk draaide het gelukkig wel zo uit dat hij ons achteraf op falafelbroodjes trakteerde.

Maar er is natuurlijk ook het publiek dat toevallig passeert. Het is die toevallige passant die het werk interessant maakt, vind ik. Dat je die brede waaier aan bezoekers hebt: zowel de cultuurliefhebber die speciaal komt kijken als de toevallige passant, die de cultuurhater kan zijn of de cultuurmaagd. De cité is ingericht als ontmoetingsplek met een bar, strandstoelen en de parasols. Het interessante aan werken in de publieke ruimte is dat het gesprekken genereert tussen mensen uit alle lagen van de bevolking over de ervaringen die iedereen meemaakt in de installaties. Er is iets met de intensiteit van die ervaringen dat de mensen de noodzaak doet voelen om erover te praten. Het opzet van de cité creëert in ieder geval wel de openingen om met elkaar in gesprek te gaan. Sommige installaties maak je als groep mee. Of je wordt letterlijk tegenover iemand anders geplaatst. Het is een blijvende zoektocht, maar ik zie het wel als mijn rol om die gesprekken mogelijk te maken.

Je werkt niet enkel in de openbare ruimte. In 2017 maakte je bijvoorbeeld Common Ground in samenwerking met Kobe Wyffels en Hannah Bekmans, twee dansers van Platform-K [een compagnie voor dansers met een beperking]. Zijn het werk in de openbare ruimte en het podiumwerk twee losstaande delen van jouw praktijk?

In zekere zin lopen die parallel aan elkaar. Common Ground vertrekt evengoed vanuit de zoektocht naar wat de norm is en hoe je hiervan kan afwijken. Dat onderzoek wordt heel hard gesteund door mijn interactie met Kobe en Hanne die constant aan de normen rammelen. Tegelijk is Common Ground wel een eigen toegeving om terug in het theater te stappen met haar gebruikelijke regels van opbouw en bespelen van publiek. De theaterzaal is een heel andere speeldoos dan de publieke ruimte, maar in beide zoek ik telkens naar die ene lijn rond wie wij zijn en hoe we samen op zoek kunnen gaan naar nieuwe realiteiten.

Ik vind het belangrijk om de maakbaarheid van onze eigen realiteit ook toonbaar te maken.

Tot slot, hoe staat het met jouw ambities om stadschoreograaf te worden?

Mijn oorspronkelijke verlangen om stadschoreograaf te worden – zoals ik het twee jaar geleden voor ogen had – is voorlopig nog niet gelukt. Ik wilde toen langdurig in de publieke ruimte aanwezig zijn, maar Studio Cité staat slechts drie dagen op een plein.

De vraag hoe je als choreograaf de publieke ruimte kan toe-eigenen als speelplek, blijft me wel nog steeds bezighouden. Mijn wens is om het idee van de stadschoreograaf op een andere manier te benaderen. Voor een volgend project wil ik dan ook echt inzetten op een langdurige aanwezigheid als danser in de ruimte.

Ik zou een aantal maanden lang elke dag al dansend aanwezig willen zijn in de stad.

Geen installaties, enkel mijn lichaam. Totaal het omgekeerde van Studio Cité dus, waar ik nu eigenlijk een soort technieker geworden ben. Als stadschoreograaf zou ik door mijn langdurige aanwezigheid ook sporen willen nalaten. Zoals een druppel water die telkens op dezelfde steenblok valt en zo de steen telkens beetje bij beetje vervormt. Of zoals het eekhoorntje in de film Ice Age: zo’n figuur dat deel wordt van de dagelijkse omgeving en met zijn acties telkens sporen nalaat.

JE SOUHAITE TRANSFORMER PROVISOIREMENT L’ESPACE PUBLIC EN UN LIEU D’INTROSPECTION UN ENTRETIEN AVEC BENJAMIN VANDEWALLE PAR LANA WILLEMS & EVA DECAESSTECKER (KAAITHEATER)

Il y a trois ans, au début de sa résidence d’artiste au Kaaitheater, nous nous sommes entretenus avec Benjamin Vandewalle – comme vous pouvez le lire dans cette brochure.

Il jouait alors avec l’idée d’une foire des arts et souhaitait devenir chorégraphe de la ville autoproclamé. En 2019, cette foire aux arts a pris corps sous le nom de Studio Cité.

Vous caressez cette idée de Studio Cité depuis quelques années déjà. La voilà concrète à présent. À quoi pouvons-nous nous attendre ?

Studio Cité est une sorte de mini-festival hors du commun, à l’allure de fête foraine.

Ce qui le rend à la fois reconnaissable, mais aussi très surprenant. La dimension foraine se situe dans la collection de petits formats, se composant de boîtes et d’installations qui jouent sur les sens. J’aborde le public de la même façon que le fait une fête foraine et j’emmène les spectateurs vers quelque chose qui ébranle leurs fondements. L’ensemble est très accessible et très populaire, non pas comme une fête foraine courante, où tout s’articule autour de la poussée d’adrénaline et du premier degré de distraction. De fait, les installations ne sont pas des attractions habituelles. Elles génèrent des expériences qui renvoient le spectateur à son corps et à sa propre image de lui-même. Il s’agit d’une sorte de loupe ou de miroir – les installations fonctionnent d’ailleurs souvent avec des miroirs. Comme si toutes les installations étaient des réflexions sur la manière dont nous nous regardons et regardons l’espace public et les autres.

Quand on mentionne une fête foraine, on pense avant tout à des gens qui se réunissent et vivent un moment de plaisir. Studio Cité invite plutôt chaque visiteur à une introspection ?

Oui, absolument. Les installations ont l’air très anodines, mais on en sort quelque peu secoué. Inter-view en est un bon exemple : ça semble parfaitement innocent et les gens croient qu’ils vont visionner un film, mais quand ils entrent dans l’installation, ils font face à leurs propres incertitudes quant à leur apparence et la façon dont les autres les regardent.

Ils sortent parfois complètement pétrifiés ou en larmes, et ce, tandis que d’autres font la queue en ayant une profusion d’attentes.

Dans Studio Cité, la perception occupe une place centrale. Parfois, le public doit complètement s’abandonner à votre chorégraphie du regard, mais de temps à autre, vous le laissez découvrir de manière active ce que peuvent donner d’autres façons de regarder.

En effet. Par le biais des installations, je fais intensément entrer les gens « dans leur corps ». On peut le voir comme un fil rouge à travers l’ensemble de Studio Cité. Cela se situe dans le prolongement de ma recherche autour de la chorégraphie et la manière de la transmettre au public. Toutes les installations suivent la logique d’une chorégraphie interne : e corps du public est engagé de telle sorte que les mouvements traversent directement le corps du spectateur. En ce sens, Studio Cité traite de la prise de conscience de son propre corps dans la ville.

Qu’entendez-vous précisément par « une chorégraphie qui traverse directement le corps du spectateur » ?

Il n’y a pas de performeur qui exécute la chorégraphie pour le spectateur. En tant que danseur et chorégraphe, je trouve bien sûr intéressant de regarder la danse, mais j’ai tellement plus appris de ma propre expérience de danse que de regarder danser. Aussi, toutes les installations ont vu le jour à partir du souhait de transmettre toutes les sensations et les expériences que vit le danseur directement aux corps des spectateurs, avec le moins d’entremises possible, sans que cette expérience doive d’abord passer par le corps d’un performeur. Bien qu’il y ait des corps dansant dans Studio Cité, ils sont toujours en lien avec un public qui accompagne le mouvement.

Quelle est l’importance de la relation avec la ville ou avec le lieu où est installé Studio Cité ? Pourquoi ne pas avoir simplement choisi une salle de théâtre ?

Je souhaite transformer provisoirement l’espace public en un lieu d’introspection.

Pour moi, la relation à la ville concerne la façon dont nous vivons notre environnement de manière directe et physique. Chaque installation donne une autre tournure à la manière dont nous remplissons l’espace autour de nous. Dans un certain sens, je souhaite transformer la chorégraphie quotidienne qui règne dans la ville en quelque chose de différent.

La ville est définie par des règles et des codes de comportement quotidiens, tacites, mais présents et auxquels Studio Cité souhaite se frotter. Je pense que cela a toujours été mon souhait de montrer que l’espace public – et c’est pour cela que je pars chaque fois à nouveau à sa rencontre – est une sorte de réalité partagée. On peut le voir comme une grande pièce de théâtre, une vaste construction que nous adoptons inconsciemment comme la norme.

Et c’est précisément cette norme que je souhaite percer, dans laquelle je tente d’obtenir une brèche à travers mes installations.

Dans cet environnement quotidien, je cherche aussi une nouvelle esthétique. À cet égard, je ne désire pas créer trop de nouveaux objets physiques. Je préfère inviter les gens à regarder différemment leur environnement familier. En orientant leur regard avec mes installations, je leur propose de vivre la ville de manière nouvelle.

Un autre aspect de l’espace public est qu’on y rencontre des gens qui remplissent et utilisent cet espace. Comment abordez-vous cela ?

C’est exact, quand nous montions un grand conteneur sur une place à Copenhague, une conversation s’est directement engagée avec un vendeur de kebab dont le véhicule était installé à cet endroit. II était très contrarié de devoir le déplacer de quelques mètres.

Heureusement, ça a pris une bonne tournure et il nous a finalement même offert des pitas aux falafels.

Mais il y a bien sûr aussi le public qui passe par hasard. Et c’est le passant fortuit qui rend le travail intéressant, me semble-t-il. Avoir ce large éventail de visiteurs : aussi bien l’amateur de culture qui vient spécialement voir que le passant occasionnel, qui déteste peut-être la culture ou est un néophyte absolu en la matière. La cité est aménagée comme un lieu de rencontre avec un bar, des transats et des parasols. L’intérêt de travailler dans l’espace public est que cela génère des conversations entre des gens issus de toutes les couches de la population, on se raconte les expériences vécues dans les installations.

L’intensité de ces expériences engendre apparemment le besoin d’en parler. L’objectif de Studio Cité crée en tout cas des ouvertures pour entamer la discussion. Certaines installations se vivent en groupe. Dans d’autres, on est littéralement placé face à autrui.

C’est une quête permanente, mais je le considère comme mon rôle de rendre ces échanges possibles.

Vous ne travaillez pas uniquement dans l’espace public. En 2017, vous avez par exemple créé Common Ground avec Kobe Wyffels et Hannah Bekmans, deux danseurs de Platform-K [une compagnie de danseurs avec un handicap]. Le travail dans l’espace public et le travail sur scène sont-ils deux éléments à part dans votre pratique ?

Ils fonctionnent en quelque sorte en parallèle. Common Ground part aussi bien de l’exploration de ce qu’est la norme que de la manière d’en dévier. Cette recherche a été fortement soutenue par mon interaction avec Kobe et Hanne qui bousculent constamment les normes. En même temps, Common Ground constitue une concession personnelle à revenir au théâtre et à ses règles conventionnelles de structure et de parvenir à captiver le public. La salle de théâtre est un tout autre environnement de jeu que l’espace public, mais dans les deux, je cherche chaque fois cette ligne particulière autour de qui nous sommes et de la façon dont nous pouvons partir ensemble à la recherche de nouvelles réalités. Je trouve important de rendre visible la faisabilité de notre réalité personnelle.

Pour conclure, où en êtes-vous avec votre ambition de devenir chorégraphe de la ville ?

Mon désir originel de devenir chorégraphe de la ville – comme je le voyais il y a deux ans – ne s’est pas réalisé pour le moment. Je souhaitais alors être longuement présent dans l’espace public, mais Studio Cité ne sera que trois jours sur une place. Toutefois, la question de comment s’approprier l’espace public en tant que chorégraphe et d’en faire un lieu de performance me préoccupe toujours. Mon souhait est d’aborder l’idée de chorégraphe de la ville de manière différente. Pour un projet suivant, j’aimerais vraiment m’investir en tant que danseur dans une présence quotidienne de longue durée – plusieurs mois – dans l’espace urbain. Pas d’installations, rien que mon corps. Donc, le contraire absolu de Studio Cité, où je suis devenu une sorte de technicien à vrai dire. En tant que chorégraphe de la ville, j’aimerais aussi que ma présence laisse des traces durables. Comme une goutte d’eau qui tombe chaque fois sur le même bloc de pierre et la déforme peu à peu. Ou comme le petit écureuil dans le film Ice Age : un personnage qui devient partie intégrante de l’environnement quotidien et dont les actions laissent chaque fois des traces.

I WANT TO TRANSFORM PUBLIC SPACE TEMPORARILY INTO A PLACE OF INTROSPECTION A CONVERSATION WITH BENJAMIN VANDEWALLE

Three years ago, when he began his residency at Kaaitheater, we sat down with Benjamin Vandewalle – you could read that conversation in this brochure.

At the time, he was toying with the idea of organizing an artists’ fair and wanted to become a self-declared city choreographer.

In 2019, that artists’ fair has taken shape under the title Studio Cité.

You have been toying with the idea of Studio Cité for a number of years. Now it has become concrete. What can we expect?

Studio Cité is a kind of unusual mini festival. It is both recognizable due to its fairground appeal, but also very strange. Its fairground character lies in the collection of small formats, consisting of boxes and installations that are very sensorial. I approach the audience as a fair would and whisk them away in something that shakes them to their core.

Generally, the whole thing is very accessible and very folky, but not like in an average fair where everything is geared towards adrenaline and entertainment in the first degree.

The installations are not average attractions. They generate experiences that catapult back into the body of the viewer, aiming straight at their own self-image. It is a kind of magnifying glass or mirror – many of the installations actually use mirrors. As though all the installations are reflections of the way in which we look at ourselves, public space, and one another.

When we think of a fair, we think of people who meet up and enjoy themselves. But is Studio Cité more about the introspection of each visitor?

Yes, absolutely. The installations look very innocent, but they leave you quite shaken.

Inter-view is a good example: it looks very innocent. People think that they are going to watch a video, but when they enter the installation, they are confronted with their own insecurities about what they look like and how other people perceive them. They sometimes come out completely silent or even in tears, while a queue of new visitors with high expectations is forming at the entrance.

Perception is central to Studio Cité. The audience must sometimes completely succumb to your choreography of gaze, but you occasionally also allow the audience actively to discover different ways of looking.

That’s right. The installations are very corporeal in the sense that I emphasize people in their bodies very strongly. You might see that as the leitmotif throughout the entire cité.

It is also aligned with my exploration of choreography as such and how to transmit it to the audience. All the installations follow the logic of an internal choreography: the body of the audience is employed in such a way that the movements run straight through the viewers’ bodies. In this sense, Studio Cité is about raising your consciousness of your own body in the city.

What do you mean precisely by ‘a choreography that runs straight through the body of the viewer’?

There is no mediating performer who performs the choreography for the viewer.

As a dancer/choreographer, of course I am interested in watching dance, but I have learned much more from the experience of dancing than I have from watching it. All the installations were created based on the desire to transmit the sensations and experiences that you feel as a dancer to the bodies of the viewers in the most immediate way possible, without that experience first having to go through the body of a performer. Although there are dancing bodies in Studio Cité, they are always in relation to an audience that moves too.

How important is the relationship with the city or with the location of Studio Cité ?

Why is it not just located in a theatre?

I want to transform public space temporarily into a place of introspection. To me, the relationship with the city is about how we experience our environment in a direct and physical way. Each installation adds a new twist to the way we understand the space around us. In a certain sense, my aim is to transform the everyday choreography of the city into something else. The city is determined by common, unspoken but prevalent rules and behavioural codes, and Studio Cité challenges them. I think that it has always been my wish – and that is why I always look for public spaces – to show that public space is a kind of shared reality. You might think of it as a giant play, a great construction that we unconsciously accept as the norm. And it is precisely that norm that I want to puncture; my installations are an attempt to tear it open.

In these everyday surroundings, I also try to find a new aesthetic. In that sense, I do not want to create too many new physical things. Instead, I want people to see their familiar surroundings in new ways. By guiding their gaze with my installations, I enable them to experience the city in a new way.

One of the other aspects of public space is that you encounter other people who use and interpret that space in a different way. How do you deal with that?

That’s right. During set-up in Copenhagen, we placed a large container on a square.

There was a kebab salesman who always parked his car there and he was very angry that he had to move his car a few metres further away. But it all turned out well in the end, and he even gave us some free falafel.

But there are of course also the random passers-by. I think it is these people who make the work really interesting because there is such a broad variety of visitors: both culture lovers who come intentionally but also random passers-by who might be culture haters or culture virgins. The cité is organized as a meeting place with a bar, beach chairs and parasols. The interesting thing about working in public space is that it generates conversations between people from all layers of society about the experiences that everyone has in the installations. There is something about the intensity of these experiences that makes people feel a need to talk about them. The cité intentionally creates openings to talk to one another. Some of the installations are experienced in groups. Or they literally place you opposite someone else. It is a constant search, but I do see it as my role to facilitate these conversations.

You not only work in public space. For example, in 2017, you made Common Ground in cooperation with Kobe Wyffels and Hannah Bekmans, two dancers from Platform-K [a company for dancers with disabilities]. Are work in public space and stage performances two distinct parts of your artistic practice?

In a certain sense, they run parallel. Common Ground is likewise based on the exploration of the norm and how you can deviate from the norm. This research is very much supported by my interaction with Kobe and Hanne, who constantly try to shake up the norms. At the same time, Common Ground is a kind of personal capitulation to return to 19

the theatre with its common rules of construction of audience manipulation. The theatre is a very different playground than public space, but my work in both always looks for that one leitmotif about who we are and how we can go in search of new realities together.

To me it is important to highlight the malleability of our own reality.

Finally, what about your ambitions of becoming the city choreographer?

My original desire to be city choreographer – as I had pictured it two years ago – has not worked out yet. My aim then was to have a long-term presence in public space, but Studio Cité will only be on the square for three days. The question of how, as a choreographer, you can appropriate public space as a performance space does continue to fascinate me. My aim now is to approach the idea of being the city choreographer in a different way.

For my next project, I want to invest in the long-term presence as a dancer in the space.

I would like to be present as a dancer in the city every day for several months. No installations, just my body. In other words, completely the opposite of Studio Cité, in which I have become a kind of technician. As the city choreographer, I would like my long-term presence to leave a mark. Like a drop of water that always falls in the same place on a piece of stone, gradually transforming the stone. Or like the little squirrel in the film Ice Age: a figure who becomes part of the everyday surroundings and whose actions always leave a mark.

HOW TECHNOLOGY CHANGES THE WAY WE SENSE, THINK, LIVE, AND FEEL A CONVERSATION WITH METTE INGVARTSEN

In recent years, the Danish choreographer and dancer Mette Ingvartsen has often developed her productions in the form of cycles.

Her new performance Moving in Concert is the beginning of a new series about technology. The piece imagines a universe where humans, technologies and natural materials coexist to create an abstract set of movement.

When this conversation took place, Ingvartsen was still in the midst of the creative process, but she lifted a tip of the veil for us.

You are currently working on a new performance – Moving in Concert – that will premiere at Kaaitheater in October. Could you tell us about the themes that you are exploring in this piece?

What I want to explore with Moving in Concert is the body’s abstract relation to technology. Or rather, how to understand technology as something that is active within our bodies even when we are no longer directly connected to technological extensions, such as computers, tablets and telephones. I am interested in how the incorporation of technology into our bodies transforms the neurological patterns in our brains. How it changes the way we sense, think, live and feel.

In your previous performance series on sexuality, The Red Pieces, you already touched on the influence of technology on our bodies, for example by the pharmaceutical industry. Which other aspects from that series will you be addressing in this new work?

The idea of non-human agency and the body’s relation to objecthood is a theme I was already exploring within The Red Pieces, but also even earlier when I was making The Artificial Nature Series. In my mind, this new work actually started as an attempt to bring together those two strands of research: on one hand the work I have done on sexuality and the human body, and on the other the choreographies I have made for non-humans. As you can imagine, this was not an easy match, and in the end, I decided simply to go in an entirely new direction. What I find exciting to focus on right now is to search for relations between the performativity of humans, technologies and natural materials, and to explore varied forms of co-existence between these elements. Many of the performers in Moving in Concert have also been part of my previous group works and this creates a strong continuity from the previous series, despite the topics diverging in new directions.

You speak about technology and the brain; how do you think these two inter-relate within today’s society?

What interests me in general is how the body is transformed by technology, and how our neurological patterns are changing because of the way we use technological tools.

Today, technology enables us to think and to do things we have not been able to do before, but it also creates new illnesses that we have not had to face in the past. If you think about it from a scientific perspective, this is manifested in how the body is literally being modified by scientists in areas like microbiology, genetic engineering, neuroscience, or from a more dystopic perspective within the pharmaceutical industry.

The technological condition is today no longer only about mechanically extending the body, but also about literally transforming it from the inside out. It suffices to watch our computers, telephones and tablets for more than eight hours a day to understand how the images, texts, intimate communications and social networks similarly transform our mental structures, moods and our bodily sensations.

You do not use those very recognizable technological tools in the piece. Instead you use wireless LED lights, with which the performers create all kinds of abstract and social formations. Why did you make this decision to abstract away from concrete uses of technological tools?

In the piece, we work a lot on the perception of light, shadow and colour. One of the focuses is circular movement and turning and spinning with the lights as a task that forces a specific neurological activity both for the performers and for the audience. At first this turning might seem like an isolating practice as it is impossible to fully see each other while doing it, but in fact it simply relies on a different form of sociality than the ones we know from everyday life. What we aim for is to produce an abstract form of togetherness where rhythm, speed, colour, and the fact that sharing an intense and demanding physical activity produces a different form of collective behaviour.

To me this almost metaphorical way of handling technological tools was more interesting than showing what we all know too well – how to use a smartphone or a computer creatively.

What does working with abstraction offer, according to you?

In my latest solo, 21 pornographies, I needed to address certain issues like the abuse of power, violence or sexualized torture. For these topics I did not feel that abstraction was the right strategy; I needed to address them head on. During the research for that performance, however, I discovered other materials that I found very exciting although they did not make it into the piece.

Moving in Concert comes out of those discoveries, but also out of a wish to work more abstractly than I have done in the past ten years. For me, dance and choreography have never been isolated fields of expression that can be completely dissociated from social and political questions. But right now, the concerns I have implicitly have a level of abstraction built into them which makes my work evolve in that direction. In that sense, abstraction offers the possibility to address questions I have about our society. Questions concerning the sensory mechanisms of our bodies, the effect that technology has on our brains and how neurological patterns are changing accordingly. At the same time, abstraction also invites the audience to engage with movement and choreography without offering a narrative reference or semantic content, as had been the case in my more recent works.

Another key topic in Moving in Concert is ‘plasticity’. What is your understanding of this term? And how does it resonate in the piece?

The idea of plasticity actually comes from neuroscience, in which scientists speak about the plasticity of the brain, or the brain’s capacity to transform and build new neurological patterns while at the same time also having a capacity to resist external influence. Catherine Malabou, in her book What Should We Do with Our Brains (2004), has taken this neurological research as a cue to address current problems within our knowledge and information-driven economies, like for instance the problem of precariousness or the demand for flexibility that many people face today. This book was very inspiring, but at the same time

I did not know exactly what to do with its content in regard to making a performance. Instead of trying to translate it, I started to think about what plasticity in an artistic practice could mean or what it would look like in a performative form. Moving in Concert is the result of that thought experiment.

Why is the piece called Moving in Concert?

The performance is called Moving in Concert because it is inherently a piece about being and moving together, and perhaps also about how to rethink those issues from within the history of dance. What currently interests me is to think about collectivity across different forms of existence. If we think about the collectivity of humans only, then the social, or the idea of co-existence appears in a specific way. If we try to think about collectivity across that line and include humans, technologies, and natural materials, we need a new imaginary.

When I first started thinking about the piece I actually called it “Moving in Concert (with things)� to indicate that what we need today is to reconsider how we cross-breed with non-human elements and how this transforms our human ways of relating, not only to each other but also to the non-human elements that inhabit this earth with us. What I am searching for at the moment is a different balance between humans, technologies and natural materials, towards more nuanced and experimental forms of co-existence, or perhaps even an un-expected resistant form of being together.

Met een ensemble van Iraakse en Europese acteurs brengt Rau een Oresteia van onze tijd.

Une succession apparemment sans fin de meurtres et de vengeance : voilà en bref l’intrigue d’Orestie. Dans Orestes in Mosul, Milo Rau combine la tragédie des tragédies et des conflits politiques actuels. Comment mettre fin à la spirale de violence entre les différentes parties belligérantes de la guerre civile syro-irakienne et leurs alliés internationaux ? Avec un ensemble d’acteurs irakiens et européens, Rau monte une version contemporaine d’Orestie.

In Orestes in Mosul, Milo Rau combines the tragedy of tragedies with contemporary political conflicts. Damiaan De Schrijver en Bert Haelvoet begeven zich op het domein van de film met een voorstelling die het midden houdt tussen filmquiz, knutselatelier en talkshow. Uitgangspunt is Hitchcock Truffaut, het boek waarin de Nouvelle Vague-cineast François Truffaut zijn idool Alfred Hitchcock een spervuur aan vragen voorlegt. Maar ook het interview dat de Amerikaanse journalist Dick Cavett bij Hitchcock aflegde passeert de revue.

Tussendoor dagen de twee acteurs elkaar al spelend uit, proberen ze stunts te recreëren, en mag het publiek weetjes over Hitchcocks werk spuien.

THOMAS RYCKEWAERTBE Move 37 Voor zijn lecture-performance Move 37 verdiept Thomas Ryckewaert zich in artificiële intelligentie en kosmologie. Samen met kosmoloog Thomas Hertog (KU Leuven) zoekt hij naar manieren om het radicaal vreemde bloot te leggen. We stoten al snel op de grenzen van onze kennis bij het horen van Hertogs kosmologische inzichten: een even bevreemdende als nederige ervaring.

For his lecture-performance Move 37, Thomas Ryckewaert researched artificial intelligence and cosmology. Along with cosmologist Thomas Hertog (KU Leuven), he explores ways of uncovering the radically strange. We run up against the boundaries of our knowledge when we hear Hertog’s cosmological insights: an alienating but also humbling experience.

Alles vloeit voort uit aanraking – een strijkstok op een snaar, een arm op een schouder, een akoestische gewaarwording op je huid.

De dansers bemiddelen de ontmoeting tussen muzikaliteit en tastzin, hun choreografie slingert heen en weer tussen voelen, zien en horen. Geef een hand of arm!

Vera Tussing invite le quatuor à cordes MP4 et quatre danseurs à une rencontre ludique entre mouvement et son. Tout découle du toucher – l’archet contre une corde, un bras sur une épaule, une sensation acoustique sur la peau. Les danseurs se posent en médiateurs du spectacle entre musicalité et toucher, leur chorégraphie oscille entre ressentir, voir et entendre. Tendez une main ou un bras !

Vera Tussing invites the string quartet Quatuor MP4 to join four dancers onstage for a playful encounter between movement and sound. Everything arises from touch – a bow on a string, an arm on a shoulder, an acoustic sensation on your skin. Radouan Mriziga laat zich inspireren door een oude liefde: rapmuziek. Samen met zeven jongeren verdiepte hij zich in alles wat rap uniek maakt: het ritme, de flow, de statements en gebaren, en de geschiedenis van de grandmasters tot Kendrick Lamar. In 8.2 proberen ze de essentie te vatten van een muziekstijl die trends overstijgt en generaties overleeft – en zichzelf telkens heruitvindt.

Avec sept jeunes danseurs, il se plonge dans tout ce qui rend le rap unique : le rythme, le flow, les postulats et les gestes, l’histoire des grands maîtres jusqu’à Kendrick Lamar. 8.2 tente de saisir la quintessence d’un style musical qui transcende les modes et les générations et ne cesse de se réinventer.

Radouan Mriziga finds inspiration in an old love: rap music. Along with seven young performers, he researched everything that makes rap unique: the rhythm, the flow, the statements and gestures, and its history from the grandmasters to Kendrick Lamar. In 8.2 they attempt to capture the essence of a style of music that transcends musical trends and survives across generations – and which constantly reinvents itself.

WORKSHOP: HOW TO HIPHOP Dancer and choreographer Tomas Ntamashimikiro will teach you hip hop grooves and social dances. You will learn new insights into hip hop culture and viscerally discover what makes dance so infectious. Put on your best dancing clothes and come and groove with us! Everyone is welcome irrespective of hip hop experience.
