Saint Mary’s Bazaar

Saint Mary's once again rolled out the red carpet to all who wanted to enjoy some great Italian food while sharing good times with friends and family. Such a great tradition going back over 100 years. We can all remember going here as kids with our folks just before the school year started. It was so much fun back then running in to friends and it still is today. Such a great tradition!

I really enjoyed working on this one. A biopic about a Braveheart-type character, with lots of action and all the blood money can buy. It's an inspiring tale about Jan Zizka, who as a mercenary would regularly change sides during battles - for the highest bidder. In our story he took a job kidnapping a woman in the royal family, and she opened his eyes to all those who couldn't afford to be on either side. The inspirational end of this story, was the beginning of a long career for Zizka, regularly putting down the armies of Kings he had fought for (and putting them down with his outnumbered peasants). But that part's the sequel. This film is his origin, and Medieval Europe was a very ugly place - but it's shown with some beautiful camerawork.

I also played a role in this one, as the leader of the antagonist's army, and one of two men hunting Zizka. Of course, after I agreed to play it - I lobbied to make story changes so that I won at the end, and killed Zizka. But that didn't go over too well, so I had to settle for coming damn close. ;-)

I think anybody who likes a little period with their action will enjoy this one.

1940 One Million Years B.C

Italy has long been known for the beauty of its culture, heritage, traditions, scenery, and of course its people to which one girl born in Rome Italy has certainly been internationally famous. That girl of course is Sophia Loren. Growing up during the war was hard for everyone. Sophia's family moved to another town to stay with relatives after a bombing had injured her. After the war she and her family returned back home where her grandmother opened a pub in their living room. Her mother played the piano, her sister sang, and Sophia waited tables and washed the dishes. It wasn't long though that things would start to change. At just 15 years of age Sophia won the title of Miss Elegance in the Miss Italy Beauty Pageant. A year later she would take up acting lessons in Italy's national film school and began acting in small roles which in just two years turned into starring roles in Italian movies and on the American screen starring with the likes of John Wayne in Legend of the Lost, and Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra in the Pride and the Passion. With Hollywood and all the world taking notice, this Italian beauty became a star overnight. Paramount Studios was soon to sign her to a contract and another starring role with Cary Grant in House Boat. The list of movies and awards worldwide is practically endless from Golden Globes to Oscars. In 1991 she received the Academies Lifetime Achievement Award and has been recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the Greatest Female Stars of Classical Hollywood cinema. She is truly one of Hollywood's greats and continues to bring so much to us all! Wishing you the very best Sofia Costanza Brigida Villani Scicolone on this Birthday and every day!

Hickory & Doc invited us to come on down to Afton for their Arts & Craft Festival and we're sure glad they did. With a long history this revived artistic gala lined the sidewalks with dozens and dozens of booths showing their cre ative works from all over New York and other states. In such a picturesque town the backdrop was perfect for all the artists to display their talents while also fea turing entertainers, antique cars, music and of course some great food from their hometown and other locality restaurants & purveyors. Make sure to mark this on your calendar for next year and make the short trip anytime to enjoy all that our good neighbors in Afton have to offer!

Looking back 100 years here is an essay from Binghamton Central's class of 1923. It tells of the pride they have in their school and students. An essay that may well be written for every class, for every school, and for you who will be graduating this year. So here's to our class of 2023. Make this a great year, make this the best year!

"Carpe diem: Seize the opportunity"

Class of '23

Binghamton Central Class of 1923 Essay & Motto

There's a lot of great memories that we all have from different life experiences. It doesn't take much to recall special moments in our lives. Sometimes just opening an old year book can bring back a lot of fond memories. If you love our history, nostalgia and antiques as much as we do, why not visit one of our great antique stores and take a trip down memory lane

....Good scholarship is not a thing to be passed by lightly. Out of a class of one hundred and eighty six, which is the largest class that has ever graduated from Binghamton Central High School, thirty three are honor students. That means that our class has appreciated what an education means and has taken its work earnestly and seriously. Although it is of ten said that the youth of today is frivolous and irresponsible for the most part, surely, since this is our school's largest number of honor students, it proves a right attitude in general as well as an ability and diligence in studies. But we have applied our motto to other phases of school life. Aside from our honor students...our class is proud of her poets, proud of her musicians, her athletes, orators, artists and actors... For on every occasion when there is a need or desire for poetry, some one of our class can satisfy the want. We are well repre sented in the musical clubs, quartets, special chorus, orchestra and band. Not everyone can boast of tying a world record, but this is what one of our athletes has done. In the last interclass-track meet, the seniors were the victors. Every year we have two exceptionally well presented plays...Then there are the promising artists and orators among us. Our artists have designed the cover for the Panorama and have taken part in many a contest. It is not only in speaking contests that we are proud of our orators, but we have had fine speeches given on lesser occasions. We must not boast only in those well known, we would not forget the rank and file. They are those who have studied faithfully and well and have made the class what it is. And is it confidence misplaced when I prophesy that in future explorations, the greatest discovery will be that the class of '23 is still following her motto "Carpe diem". Seize the opportunity

Your Neighbor Patricia A Hrib Kocik Club, Band, the Senior Class Vice-President, an Honor Student and voted Best All-Around Girl. But of course there is more to Patricia’s life than could be listed in the yearbook and so much that followed after high school. So let us share with you a bit more about this truly wonderful woman who was born and raised here in the Triple Cities. Patricia (Pat) was born in Endicott during the depression. Times of course were hard. Both her parents worked for Endicott Johnson Shoes. Her mother was a stitcher and her father worked in the tannery. When Pat was very young she contracted Rheumatic Fever and had to be quarantined at home. With not a lot to do within her confines, Pat took up learning the violin, cello and even the trumpet. Upon returning to Daniel Dickenson School she unfortunately still had to be kept away from other students for a year being placed in “open air school.” Regaining her health, Pat’s life through her teen years kept pretty busy. From grade school through high school she worked many jobs to help her mom with rent. You may have found her working at Philadelphia Sales, Crescent Cleaners or even at the Corner Drug Store where she remembers fixing sandwiches for Mr. Olum on many occasions. Besides work, Pat joined Central’s Band / Marching band. Practices back then were every Friday and it was truly so much fun playing for Central. Besides music Pat had a passion for swimming and trained for synchronized swimming. Pictured below on the left Pat participated in the Police Athletic League’s weekly swimming show at the First Ward Pool. The money they raised went to help the city. To be part of such a great program is something she is very proud of to this day. After High School Pat went to work for Carey & Co for $32.50 a week. Looking for more opportunities she took a position with McFarland Johnson while also studying drafting with them. In 1962 she began a long career with IBM in Owego that would last for 3 decades. She had positions in the photo lab, drafting, the control center and even in the clean room building where she helped build computers for the space shuttle. After retiring from IBM there was still more that Pat wanted to do so she took a position with Ideal and then the Broome West Center as a receptionist. And of course, there was family. Pat married a man in the Coast Guard and had three wonderful children; Christopher, Lori and John. Her kids now grown, live in California to which over the years she has taken many trips to visit them and enjoy the sunshine. Now living at Ideal in Endicott Pat is retired, though her life is still pretty busy. Ideal for her is the perfect community where she has made so many new friends and has so much to do from exercise classes to outings and dining. Life is good, and for Pat she looks forward to what each new day may bring while also cherishing all that she has lived through and seen. And we at My Town, are so very glad we had a chance to catch up with Pat and share a bit of her story with you. Thank you Pat for everything and thank you for being another reason why this is such a great place to live!

Flipping through an old school yearbook we get to see moments frozen in time. Images that were once new with the classmates within eagerly searching for photos of friends and of course themselves. Time for all of us moves on but those pictured within are captured in their high school years forever. Yearbooks can tell a tale of friendship, studies, clubs, sports and even a bit about each person such as one Binghamton Central graduate of the Class of ’55, Patricia A. Hrib Kocik. Next to her senior photo you’ll learn that she was in Glee

Once upon a time lunch counters could be found in most department stores while diners of many also were a friendly site on our city streets. We are lucky to still have some great diners like the Clinton Street Cafe and The Park Diner to enjoy yet so many others of years gone by remain fondly in our memories like The Ritz, Red Robin, Argo, The Olympia Tea Room and of course the Lunch Counter at Woolworths which came to Binghamton back on April 8th, 1922 (pictured here to the right on its opening day). For decades shoppers, business people and students alike found a place at the counter for lunch or maybe just a great piece of pie and coffee. Just seeing one of their old menus from past years can bring back a lot of memories. Here's to all of our lunch counters and diners of old and today, for such great food and a tradition we can still enjoy!

Lauren (Chisdak ) MoodyYour Neighbor

Lauren was born in Sayre, PA. You may recognize her from the Tioga Downs Casino where she has worked first as a server at Virgil’s and now as a cocktail server. But there is so much more behind the smile that serves many of us each day that we don’t always get to know. So let us share with you here a little bit of Lauren’s story.

We may not know exactly what life has in store for us, but somehow, in so many ways, what we’re looking for seems to find us. For Lauren (Chisdak) Moody, life has brought her so much already. She blessed with a family, love and even a career she enjoys every day.

“I was born in Sayre and grew up in Athens, Pa. My mom was a single mother of 3 girls and worked as a nurse. Growing up I was a competitive dancer with the Pat Haggerty Dance Studio from 3 - 18 yrs old. As a family our lives revolved around dance. We were always practicing or at a competition somewhere. Pittsburgh Steelers football was also a huge part of my upbringing too! We would sit in the fire hall with my family & watch the games. In High School I was involved in cheerleading, the swim team and of course dance. Being on the swim team worked out great for work too, giving me my first job as a Life Guard. At 16 I also started serving at restaurants beginning my first of many jobs in food and beverage. After High School I studied at Corning for a nursing degree, but it was too hard being a single mom myself & working while trying to go to school. At 18 I was already bartending to try to make ends meet. Later when Virgil’s at Tioga Down’s opened I took a job as a server there while attending card dealing classes. I dealt cards & craps for 2 yrs before moving away to try another casino. When I moved I was too nervous to deal in a large Casino so I switched to cocktail waitressing which I now do at Tioga ….and love it! Cocktailing at Tioga is faced pace. A lot of walking & talking! It’s something new every shift. New people. New stories. Always hoping not to trip & spill everything I’m carrying! I love cocktailing here. It’s fun. Every day I get to interact with all different types of people. Many people I would never have an opportunity to meet if I didn’t work in a casino setting. Veterans, teachers, doctors, college students, athletes, business owners... someone new and different every time I step on the floor, each with their own unique story. I can’t do this job forever, but right now I really enjoy my job & the opportunities it has given me. When I’m not at work, my kids are my hobbies! We try to stay active and go on fun adventures every chance we get. I now have an amazing Fiancé and 2 beautiful children as well as 4 amazing bonus children! We love going to parks, amusement parks, watching movies and swimming in our pool. Coming from someone who has lived elsewhere... this area is really amazing. You just have to find the right “place” here for you! I’m not sure what the future holds for me but with the family I have and the friends I have made along the way, I look forward to today and everyday to come. To all my friends and family…Here’s to your life!"
