My Secret Passion for Paris

There was a big book of PHOTOGRAPHS in my home that I remember as a little girl that belonged to my dad that now belongs to me. My father passed away in 1979 so much of his character is just a very fond memory deep in my heart.

My Dad put the photo album together while stationed in Paris for 2 years as an MP in the US Army. His family was of French and German descent but were mostly French and I was always so intrigued by Paris, the culture and the photographs and notations that he wrote on the back of each of them. I have wanted to visit where my father was stationed and where my ancestors came from my entire life. My relatives that trace back to France lived in several cities including Paris, Brittany and lower Normandy. The photo album has pages and pages of black and white photographs of the most beautiful buildings in France including churches, café’s, museums, monuments, The Eiffel Tower, ARC De Triomphe, The Louvre, Notre Dame, Basilica of Sacre Coeur, Champs-Elysees, etc. This far away fantasy place has been a desired dream land destination of mine forever. This past May on a midnight flight by myself from JFK to Paris my dream came true. When I got off the plane, I thought of my dad flying over to Paris in 1957 and how he must have felt. Once settled at the Regina Louvre Hotel I was so happy that I threw my arms up in the air and will never forget my excitement that I had finally arrived in Paris. The view from our balcony overlooked the spectacular Eiffel Tower with all its colorful light displays. The hustle and bustle of people walking, talking and riding bikes went on all day and all night. The noise and excitement filled my heart with joy and endearment.

Paris is magnificent and the most beautiful place that I have ever been. I felt at home. The fashion, art, history, food, wine, and of course champagne along with the building’s architecture overwhelmed all my senses. There were so many highlights to speak of but in one week my romantic and adventurous boyfriend and I packed in all that we could. We walked thousands

of steps around the city. Our first stop was the Eiffel Tower. We did a guided tour at the Musee d’Orsay. We traveled on to St. Germain, Montmartre, Champs -Elysée, stopped at many cafés and restaurants along the way and stopped at the Coco Chanel store where I bought Chanel 1957 perfume. We climbed the steps that my dad did in 1957 at the Basilica of Sacre Coeur. To top it off, we took the most romantic dinner cruise on the Seine River. We also spent an entire afternoon in the gardens at Versailles and did a wine and cheese walking tour to experience the best baguette, finest wine, French cuisine, chocolate and crescents ever!

I have to say that the ‘French’ people are classy, reserved and very polite. They dress in tailored flattering clothing especially at the hotels and restaurants. Upon arrival at our hotel while sipping champagne waiting for our room to be ready, we asked the bartenders what they thought of Americans and they said the only complaint that they have is that Americans always stop them on their way to work to ask them how to get places. They don’t have time to answer so many questions when trying to get to work … by foot. In the city of Paris, everyone walks or takes the Paris Metro train. And then there’s the food, macaroons, windowsills filled with flowers, fresh market squares and cafés every few steps. Paris is also so romantic. Parisians are healthy in much of what they live by including eating smaller portions, eating food with no preservatives and by walking everywhere. They like to eat dinner around 8 and spend at least 2 or more hours talking in intimate settings but they also are on the move early grabbing French coffee and pastries when the sun comes up.

My heart is full of gladness and nostalgic appreciation for the opportunity to have traveled to Paris and to finally experience the history and culture of such an amazing city. My trip to Paris also brought me closer to my roots and it gave me the opportunity to feel my dad’s presence through the experience once again, which was the most meaningful and beautiful part of it all. Family and experiences are the most beautiful blessings in life, and I cannot wait to go back to where I felt so alive and at home.

When it comes to fund raisers for good causes the people and businesses in our community are always pitching in. Here at J's Tavern so many were on hand for the 6th Annual Jamison Turkow Memorial Get Together for Addiction Awareness. Thank you to all who came out to volunteer & support such a great cause!

A Little Summer Trivia

Did you know.......

1. Some U.S. beaches use dogs as life guards.

2. Roswell Nevada has a UFO Festival every summer.

3. Can you believe its been 45 years since Olivia Newton John & John Travolta had their hit single Summer Nights in the movie Grease. If you saw it in the summer of 78 in the Triple Cities you were sitting in the Cinema Endicott on Main St.

4. If this were 100 years ago in August of 1923 you might be shopping for a new Chevrolet car on Collier St. for just $680.

5. The sun's core is an unimaginable 27 million degrees F.

6. Jaws was the first Summer movie to break 100 million in revenue. And if you happened to be watching that when it was released in June of 1975 you were also at the Cinema Endicott.

7. From May thru Sept Americans will eat some 7 billion hot dogs. A treat that had its beginning right here in New York in 1901 when Henry Stevens decided to serve sausages in a French roll to keep people from burning their hands.

And here it was.... The Flight nearly 120 years ago on Dec 17th, 1903 in Kitty Hawk North Carolina where Orville and Wilbur Wright made history flying the first motor operated airplane. A flight that lasted just 12 seconds covering a distance of 120 feet. And so it all began. From imagination as old as time, two brothers had achieved what all before only dreamed of. An achievement that would soon take us to flight across the skies around the globe and finally into space.

Amazingly a simple kid's toy may have been responsible for the imagination, dreams, hard work, trials and designs which led to this Dec day of 1903. For it was one day when Orville and Wilbur were young boys that their father had brought them a simple flying machine made out of balsa wood and powered by a rubber band not too different to the one's we may have played with when younger. Well as will happen all too often with kid's toys the Wright brother's wind up flying machine broke. So much fun was the toy though that they decided to make their own. Which led to a series of design improvements and experiments transforming into a dream that would carry on into their adult years of motorized flight and finally to that day in Kitty Hawk. You never know where a child's imagination will lead them. I wonder how many of us remember having one of those balsa rubber band planes and dreamed of flying?

It doesn't take much to recall special moments in our lives. Sometimes just seeing an old toy or recalling a story of the past can bring back a lot of fond memories. So if you love our history, nostalgia and antiques as much as we do, why not visit one of our great antique stores and take a trip down memory lane.

to G reene !

Just a short trip up the road you'll find Greene New York, one of the most remarkable small towns with a downtown straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting. There's so much to see and do here that you're sure to want to come again and again to visit our neighbors to the north and enjoy the day... shopping, dining, and just taking in the sites.

Within a picturesque setting Greene plays host to an incredible history, nostalgic stores and modern amenities. Founded in 1792 and named for Revolutionary War Hero Nathaniel Greene, you'll of course find many sites of historic interest but you'll also be able to enjoy some great modern restaurants and unique, fun events like Quad Racing and the Labor Day Hose Fights. There's even a legendary ghost story that we'll save for another day to tell.

~ Please check out a great FB site called "What's Up Greene?" for much more of what you can find in Greene.

Nita Talbot

This month I am very happy to tell you a little bit about a truly wonderful person and great actress, my friend, Nita Talbot. Now of course you know her from her role as Marya, the Russian spy on Hogan’s Heroes with Bob Crane for which she received an Emmy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Admittedly this was one of her favorite roles to which she had so much fun with the cast. But there is so much more to this incredible woman who has been in hundreds of roles on screen, tv & stage.

Nita was born Anita Sokol and grew up in NYC with her older sister Gloria Stone Martin who one day would also become an actress. Early on Nita had the nick name Ginger, but years later it was a dear friend Jack Carson that suggested shortening Anita to Nita as a better stage name for this Hollywood beauty. Nita had wanted to be a model growing up which soon expanded to acting when she was in her teens. Joining her high school drama team she was cast in many of the school's plays. At 16 she went to audition as a child model, but being 5ft 8in immediately gave her the opportunity to model as an adult. Things moved pretty quickly for Nita after High School. At just 18 Warner Brothers signed her to a contract and placed her in her first role as a model in It’s A Great Feeling with Doris day, Jack Carson & Dennis Morgan. The years soon ahead would see her in dozens of movies, tv shows and stage productions. In 1951 she even debuted on Broadway in The 5th Season. In decades to come we would see Nita in a never ending parade of great shows like the hit movie Bundle of Joy with Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fischer, and a list of tv shows a mile long like The Jim Backus Show, Gunsmoke, Love American Style, Perry Mason, Maverick, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Bonanza, General Hospital, Bewitched, The Partridge Family, Hogan's Heroes and so, so many more.

Nita was truly one of the hardest working actresses in Hollywood playing to 100's of shows which will be enjoyed for generations while her personal role as a philanthropist has also benefited so many charities over the years. Thanks for everything Nita! ~ Here's wishing you a very Happy Birthday!!

Wayne Newton

A Legend comes to Tioga Downs Aug 31st

If you ever lived in Vegas you were sure to be familiar with one of the city's most famous residents, Wayne Newton, who was also known as Mr. Las Vegas and Mr. Entertainment. I lived down the road from Wayne's estate, Casa De Shenandoah" in Vegas, and what a place it was. Covering nearly 40 acres on this great estate you'd find some 140 Arabian horses, a Learjet, helipad, artesian wells and a collection of incredible cars such as Rolls Royces and a Duesenberg previously owned by Howard Hughes. So incredible was the Casa De Shenandoah that it was listed as one of the top 5 homes in the country. With continual shows always up in lights in Vegas, Wayne Newton was indeed Mr. Entertainment and a proud part of Las Vegas fame! If you came to Vegas you had to catch his show just to say you saw him.

Wayne began performing at the Flamingo with his brother in the early 60's. Early on he had been introduced to entertainment performing in clubs and theatres as well as on radio and tv. He even performed with the Grand Ole Opry and for Presidents. The years to come would see him performing for Jackie Gleason, on popular tv series like Bonanza and even at the famed Copacabana, all leading to his first hit single with Capital records, Danke Shoen. A song that would reach the top 20, world fame, and years later find its way on tv again in the film Ferris Bueller's Day off where Matthew Broderick lip-synched Wayne's hit in a Chicago Parade. The rest as they say is history....Wayne's career has spanned decades performing around the world, on stage, tv, screen and recordings. And of course there's Las Vegas where he has headlined to the excitement of millions who came to see this living legend. He's even been an active performer with the USO entertaining our troops all across the world. And now Wayne is coming to us where we can catch him live at Tioga Downs. I hope you get the chance to catch the show! It's going to be a great night!

The next time you're eating a Toll House Cookie here's a bit of history you may not have known. If you thought the name for Pound Cake came from its weight you were on the right track. The original recipe of 1795 called for one pound each of its four ingredients; flour, butter, eggs and sugar.

Another food item served up on the space missions was Tang orange drink thanks to a William Mitchell from Minnesota who invented this popular drink of the astronaughts. William didn't stop there though. He was also the inventor of Cool Whip & Pop Rocks. Did you know that before McDonald's came up with their ever popular Chicken McNuggets they experimented with another food nugget, the Onion Nugget. That was not the hit they hoped it would be and was soon dropped making way for the chicken.

Hmmm.. German Chocolate Cake is not actually German. It's name comes from Samuel German who invented the baking chocolate used to make it.
