the little oak Neighborhood Bistro and Bakery

There's a new Eatery in Conklin with a history going back decades. The Bistro and Bakery is none other than "the little oak" from the family that brought you the Red Oak Diner on Front Street in Binghamton.... So you already know you are in for a treat!

When the decision was made to write the last chapter of the Red Oak Diner it wasn't an easy one. There were so many great memories and so many friends made over the years both with customers & the staff. But as one door closes another one opens. And so it was for Julianne and her daughter Maria. They both missed the business and their many, many friends, but they also wanted something just a bit different that both of them could put their arms around and open up again. As fate would have it, they found the perfect property and neighborhood in Conklin so they both dove right in to make it a place everyone would love to come to. And so with opening day their greatest hopes were realized as the neighborhood and all their regulars from the Red Oak, and new friends as well, welcomed them in. When you walk in the doors you know you've come home to a very spe cial eatery where you're part of the family. While enjoying any number of great homemade dishes and desserts like Spinach Pie, Gyros, Bavarian Cheesecake and Hand Pies, you might be amazed at the genuine caring and connection between Julianne & Maria, the staff and guests. Everyone is friends with everyone. And if you're new to the little oak, don't worry, as soon as you come in you'll be a regular from there on and part of the family. And just in case I didn't say it with the appropriate, well deserved, emphasis... you are really going to love the dishes they prepare fresh for you every day and all the great bakery items! See you there!

The DICK'S Open 2023

This June the PGA once again came to play at En-Joie Golf Course in Endicott to see who would take the title for the DICK'S Open Golf Tournament. The competition was tight as the top three golfers were separated by one stroke each. Padraig Harrington finished 18 under par becoming the first ever back to back champion at the DICK'S Open. Joe Durant took second place at -17 and Ernie Els third at -16. It was a great weekend for Golf with the weather being a little forgiving. Off the course En-Joie was set with a host of amenities with food, vendors & drinks all on hand for everyone to enjoy. And of course the stage was set for a great concert with Country Superstar Kenny Chesney! Thank you to all who helped to put on this great event!

Hi, I'm Kaitlyn....

Originally from Central New York, I'm a small town girl with big aspirations and a whole lot of love: love for theatre and dance, love for music and songwriting, love for the pursuit of knowledge, love for God, and love for my family and friends.

The Beginning

My mom always said I was a screamer as a baby so she knew I was going to be a singer (lungs of steel, baby). I started dancing at the age of 2 and was singing in talent shows by the time I was 5. My dad and I would sing at various events and fundraisers and we eventually became quite an established father-daughter act. When I was 12, I went down to Nashville, TN to write and record my first album of pop/ country original music. Years of falling further in love with music led me to my featured spot on Season 13 of American Idol when I was 15 years old (poor timing to experiment with bangs, yikes...), a second CD of original music, and a wide open door to a world of performance opportunities with my band, Kaitlyn Jackson & Hometown.

Theatre

While all this music business was happening, I was also a full time dancer and was diving into the world of theatre. I had grown up in musicals but really started to take it seriously in high school. I got to play Lola (Damn Yankees) and Mary Poppins (you guessed it), and I knew this was what I needed to be doing. However, having two parents as teachers made me quite the brainiac (I graduated Valedictorian of my high school) so I was stuck between pursuing my artistic passion or my "academic" passion (broadcast journalism/physics/all of it, I don't

know). I soon realized that my "passion" for broadcast journalism was really just me wanting to be on TV so I decided to stop beating around the bush and go for those performing dreams!

The Latest

So, here we are! I graduated with my BFA in Acting from Ithaca College in 2020 (a tough time to kickstart a career in musical theatre... thanks COVID). But luckily for me, I had the opportunity to join the cast of the Broadway National Tour of Anastasia: The Musical as the pandemic was settling down! 10 months on the road taught me so much about myself as an artist and as a strong freaking woman, and I am so excited to put everything I've learned to use as I move on to more show biz adventures.

P.S. I am the biggest Harry Potter goon in the universe and I have a classic case of Hermione Granger Syndrome: I'm a Ravenclaw at heart but I'm masquerading as a Gryffindor. Not related in the slightest, but I thought you should know!

The New York Faerie Festival

Ouaquaga, New York was the site for The New York Faerie Festival in June. Amidst the forest one could find Elves, Gnomes, Trolls, Faerie Folk, Wood Sprites, Unicorns and even Humans all engaged in one of the funnest fantasy festivals around. This is truly just one of those neighborly events where all are having a great time and are eager to meet and talk with you. The role playing makes for an amazing story for all ages to bring home with them. Throughout the festival everyone enjoyed games, vendors, music, fantasy, art, and theatrical interactions from the magical participants everywhere. There's even a jousting tournament where knights show off their skills in a competition few will see these days. But most of all, everyone got to enjoy a weekend of hospitality, friendship and good humor in a world we can usually only find in storybooks! When you get a chance follow them on FB and their website and maybe you too can come down one day to enjoy a bit of magic in the woods.

DICK'S Sporting Goods

Growing up in the Triple Cities, DICK'S Sporting Goods has always been a favorite place to go for any sports or outdoor activity equipment. I can still remember going to DICK'S on Court St. back in 1980 with my friend Dan Mullins to get Cross Country sneakers. It was just a short walk from North High and it was kind of fun to see a lot of our friends / school athletes working there. No matter what you needed you went here first. The story of DICK'S Sporting Goods is just amazing. To think of how they grew to be the premier Sporting Goods store in America is one that tends to give us bragging rights as we see so many of their other properties across the country. Here's just a bit of their story...

DICK’S Sporting Goods was founded in 1948 when an 18-year-old Dick Stack was working at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, New York. An avid fisherman, Dick was approached by the store owner to come up with a list of products needed to get into the fishing tackle business. After Dick presented his suggestions, the owner told him he was a dumb kid and had no idea what he was doing. Dick was upset and promptly quit. He went to his grandmother’s

house where he spent a lot of time as a kid and told her what had happened. Dick’s grandmother asked how much it would cost to build the store himself. Dick said it would cost $300. His grandmother then went to the cookie jar where she kept her life savings and gave him $300 and told him, “Do it yourself.” Dick used that money and his relentless work-ethic to open a bait-and-tackle shop in Binghamton. In 1952 Dick broadened his offerings and began to stock work clothes, sportswear, camping gear, and picnic supplies along with an expanded array of fishing tackle. Things were going pretty well so a second store was opened in Vestal in 1971. It wasn’t long before Dick’s son, Ed, joined the company on a full time basis. DICK'S was an incredible success with a great future. By the late 1970's, he expanded his product line to include much of what you’ll find at DICK’S Sporting Goods today. In 1984 a new chapter started for DICK'S Sporting Goods with Ed and his Siblings buying the company from Dad. They soon expanded the Product Lines further to include an even wider range of sports and outdoor equipment, athletic s apparel and footwear. There was no holding the company back now as store after store were opened all across the country. The growth became so fantastic that they had to start opening distribution centers to maintain & deliver their inventory. Always a part of the community, in 2011 DICK'S established the DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation with a mission to inspire and enable youth sports participation. By 2015, incredibly they opened their 500th store with their first Field & Stream opening in 2013.

Now celebrating their 75th Anniversary DICK'S Sporting Goods is known from coast to coast serving athletes and outdoor enthusiasts in more than 850 DICK’S Sporting Goods, Golf Galaxy, Public Lands, Moosejaw, Going Going Gone! and Warehouse Sale stores, online, and through the DICK’S mobile app. DICK’S also owns and operates DICK’S House of Sport and Golf Galaxy Performance Center, as well as GameChanger, a youth sports mobile platform for live streaming, scheduling, communications and scorekeeping. They can be seen everywhere from stores to a sports park and stadium in Colorado that bears their name, to even our own DICK'S Sporting Goods Open at En-Joie Golf Course. With its newest store opening up at the Oakdale Mall you just can’t help but have a sense of pride in the their long history and accomplishments!*

The Declaration of Independence has been called a beacon of hope for people everywhere. It is the philosophical foundation of our American freedom. It has been adopted and referenced in the fight for freedom in many countries with a message that has always rang true. We’ve seen it quoted by great Americans like Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass who said of the fathers of this republic “They were statesmen, patriots and heroes, and for the good they did, and the principles they contended for, I will unite with you to honor their memory.”... They believed in order; but not in the order of tyranny. With them, nothing was “settled” that was not right. With them, justice, liberty and humanity were “final;” not slavery and oppression. You may well cherish the memory of such men"

The gift our forefathers gave us in the form of a written document was a proclamation of a heart of a country. A guide for a nation’s soul and character. A testament for unalienable rights they felt so strongly for that they risked their very lives in its signing. Our young country has seen just 247 years from which we have rose from a handful of colonies to the greatest nation in the world. It’s worth the read to go back in time and read the words and thoughts of this great document to see what started it all. God Bless America!

Harrison Ford

Although he has made countless movies during his career hearing the name Harrison Ford immediately brings to mind Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Wars. Harrison Ford captured America as a hero in some of the most amazing adventures to come back to the screen. With a charm reminiscent of movie heroes of old his portrayal of Indiana Jones and Han Solo made him a legend for generations to enjoy. Besides these two iconic roles, Harrison has played so many other parts from a Cowboy to a President. One of the first movie roles you may remember him in was American Graffiti as the hot rod racer Bob Falfa. With what almost seemed to be an overnight success one might wonder.... So where did it all begin?

Harrison Ford was born in 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. Both his parents were in entertainment with his mom in radio and his dad an actor. In his youth Harrison was a Boy Scout and later became a counselor with the Scouts. In later discussions with Steven Spielberg this led to a young Indiana Jones also being portrayed as a scout. Harrison attended Ripon College where he majored in Philosophy and even enrolled in a drama class toward the end which began his love for acting. After college he signed a contract with Columbia playing small parts. In 1967 he got his first credited role in A Time For Killing with Glenn Ford while also taking parts in many popular series of the day like Love American Style and Gunsmoke. As a means of earning extra money Harrison took on jobs as a carpenter. To his good fortune two of his clients were writers who helped him get the American Graffiti role where he became friends with producer George Lucas. Seeing quite a bit of talent in Harrison, George cast him in some other roles. And then finally it happened. Harrison was helping George Lucas to read lines with auditioners for a new film of George's called Star Wars. But after watching Harrison reading lines with other actors George realized that this young Harrison Ford would be the perfect Han Solo. And there it all began. Moving forward over his career Harrison Ford has continued to amaze and entertain audiences all across the world. His accomplishments and awards from Oscars to a Life Time Achievement, to the thrills and memories he has given us all, are a testament to this incredible actor who has become a Hollywood Legend and whose shows will continue to entertain for generations to come. Happy Birthday Harrison!

Yankee Doodle Dandy George M. Cohan

One of the greatest true life patriotic movies about a playwright is Yankee Doodle Dandy starring none other than James Cagney, a legend in his own right. It took a talent like Cagney to portray someone such as George M. Cohan who had changed the face of Broadway and created a host of stage productions covering the skyline from theater to theater in NYC. George was born on July 3rd 1878 though his parents say he was actually born on the 4th of July. George's parents were both vaudeville performers to which George joined the act when he was just 8 years old. Touring the country with their act "The Four Cohans" which included his parents and sister, George may have had limited formal schooling but it introduced George into a world on stage that would later refer to him as " the greatest single figure the American theatre ever produced – as a player, playwright, actor, composer and producer". George began writing scripts and songs for their shows when he was just in his teens which would lead into a lifetime career in entertainment writing over 50 shows and publishing some 300 songs to include Over There, Yankee Doodle Boy and You're A Grand Old Flag. These songs and the shows they were in captured the heart of America's Patriotism, and became a rallying call to all Americans when World War I broke out and The United States was needed by our allies to help end the war. In an unprecedented acknowledgement for his contributions to America, President Franklin D. Roosevelt presented Cohan with The Congressional Medal of Honor for his patriotic songs which inspired a nation.

An American Playwright

There was even a bronze statue erected of George M. Cohan in Time Square which you can still see today.

In 1942 as a tribute to Cohan's life, Warner Brothers produced Yankee Doodle Dandy which followed the life of George Cohan, starring James Cagney and Joan Leslie. Throughout the film you'll hear many of the songs that made George famous reflecting the patriotism he had, shared and inspired. It's little wonder that Yankee Doodle Dandy is broadcast every Fourth of July for these very same reasons. The impact of this man on theater and America was of no small measure. Today of course you can watch Yankee Doodle Dandy to reflect on this great American and you may hear his songs played at parades by marching bands or maybe even on a Merry-Go-Round, but in the first half of the 20th Century the name George M. Cohan was known from coast to coast and around the world. As was relayed in the movie where President Roosevelt was presenting Cohan with the Congressional Medal of Honor these words were given: "A man may give his life to his country in many different ways Mr. Cohan. And quite often he isn't the best judge of how much he has given. Your songs were a symbol of the American Spirit. Over there was just as powerful a weapon as any canon, as any battleship we had in the First World War. Today we're all soldiers. We're all on the front......" When this movie came out in 1942 America was already fighting in World War II to help save the world. For all those in the theater audiences across America, Cohan's songs were once again heard to help raise the spirit of every American during this time of need. Such was the acclaim for Yankee Doodle Dandy, that it was nominated for 8 Academy Awards with James Cagney winning the Oscar for Best Actor.

A Little 4th of July Trivia

~There was a plot to kill Washington on the Eve of the Revolutionary War by New York's Governor and Mayor. The plot was foiled by an organization that George Washington had formed leading the way to today's CIA.

~Once written, Congress sent the Declaration of Independence to a printer by the name of John Dunlop to make about 200 official copies. Today about 26 are known to remain. In 1989 in PA an old picture was bought for about $4. The new owner found one of the original Dunlop copies of the Declaration tucked away inside the frame. They sold it for…. $8,100,000.

~Remember the movie “National Treasure” with Nicholas Cage. Well there really is a message on the back of the Declaration of Independence. It reads: “Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776.” Sorry, no treasure clues…. that we know of.

~Actress Reese Witherspoon is an actual descendent of one of the original 56 signers of the Declaration, John Witherspoon.

~Both Thomas Jefferson & John Adams died on July 4, 1826, 50 years after 1776

~Wanting to fight to help give America its Independence, Deborah Sampson disguised herself as a man and enlisted in the Continental Army.

"The Art of Cookery" An Early American Cookbook

Well it may be that Washington cut down a cherry tree, but probably not one at his and Martha's home in Mount Vernon where they grew Morello Cherries. As can be expected of a President's home, George and his wife Martha were host to many catered events. And the cookbook to turn to was Hannah Glasse's The Art of Cookery where detailed recipes & guides from baked goods to entrees were written for all to take from. This was the one difinitive guide to cooking that found its ways to the homes of all colonial Americans including the homes of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams. Martha Washington's copy was dated 1765. As an added benefit to the cookbook, Hannah even had meal suggestion for different months and seasons. Here is one such suggestion...
