The St. Mary's Bazaar

Saint Mary's once again rolled out the red carpet to all who wanted to enjoy some great Italian food while sharing good times with friends and family. Such a great tradition going back over 100 years. We can all remember going here as kids with our folks just before the school year started. It was so much fun back then running in to friends and it still is today. It's heart warming to think of the stories our parents and grandparents would tell us of The Saint Mary's Bazaar with all the food, music and games. Yet the parts of the stories that always stood out were the recollections of seeing family and friends there. Today it was a blessing to reconnect with so many while talking about old times and how everyone is doing today. We are truly blessed to have these days and opportunities to spend time with one another. Such a great tradition!

Our Trip to Mayberry

Nostalgia minded vacations vary from household to places of interest and time. My brother and i decided to embark on a different type of vacation. One filled with not only fun and excitement, but one not often thought of. Along with family members, we decided to use nostalgia as our driving force. We created a vacation with memories that will last forever!

We traveled to Mt. Airy, N.C. or commonly known as Mayberry, N.C.! The childhood home of Andy Griffith! Our project, dressed as Andy Taylor and Barney Fife, was to re-create three separate scenes from the Andy Griffith Show starring Andy Griffith and Don Knotts. To our surprise, we couldn’t have imagined the wonderful experience that awaited us!

Upon arriving at the Mayberry Courthouse, we were approached by Norm Schultz, a Mayberry Sheriffs car tour driver! He was very welcoming and asked us to shoot a short video inside the police car! We agreed immediately! Mr. Schultz once drove a police car, as a policeman, in the television series blue bloods!! How special is that?

Then, on to the courthouse to do our scenes. With all of the tourists coming through, we had to postpone our filming several times. When they saw us in uniform we were constantly asked to pose for pictures with everyone. That was a lot of fun! It actually made us feel like we were the real thing! We did manage to finish the three segments we started out to do. The first being Barney recites the Preamble to the Constitution. The second with Barney singing a song about himself and the third with Barney

and Andy singing the Mayberry Alma Mater!! This was so much fun. Then we proceeded to take in the Mayberry sights.

We spent the rest of the day walking through downtown Mt. Airy. We ventured in some of the quaint stores, shops and restaurants that they had to offer.

Our first stop was the actual Floyd’s Barber Shop! We couldn’t resist, so both of us agreed to get our haircut! While there, we had the sincere pleasure of meeting Mr. Bill Hiatt. Mr. Hiatt is the son of the original owner of Floyd’s Barber Shop, who was the only man to cut Andy Griffiths hair for over 30 years and who, was the inspiration for the character of Floyd the barber on the Andy Griffith Show!

While getting our haircut, this man was a wealth of knowledge about the town, its people and its history. He also treated us to some hilarious stories of the past! This stop is a must for everyone visiting there and don’t be afraid. Have a seat in Andy’s original chair, get your haircut and enjoy the stories of Bill Hiatt at Floyd’s Barber Shop!!

Next we found ourselves getting hungry so we searched for a nice little restaurant! We found Barney’s Cafe! Great choice! Barney’s is a little diner serving great food with great service and great prices!! If you need a little lunch break then Barney’s Cafe is the place for you!

Our last stop for the day was Uncorked!! Uncorked is a great little place to rest, unwind and have some wine. Operated by 2 sisters, they also offer meat, cheese and fruit platters! With wines like Andy’s Blend, Sweet Mayberry and a host of Mayberry character wines, can you think

the Kirkwood Town Fair

When it comes to putting on a great Fair, Kirkwood has the recipe to make any town proud! What a fantastic event with so much to see and partake of for everyone. Here's just some of what you would have seen.... Live music, rides for all ages, your favorite festival foods, a kids tent, a petting zoo and face painting, a pie eating contest, basket raffles, a cornhole tournament, a karate demonstration, a police demonstration, an amazing car show, The Little Miss Kirkwood Town Fair Pageant, a community dog show and photo booth, a great parade, fireworks and so much more! These folks really put on a great show with a lot of community support and great sponsors! See you next year!!

Well it's September again and for millions of students, teachers and parents that means back to school. We all have our own memories of our schools and the friends we had there. Even driving by our old school or seeing an old year book might bring back so many memories of days gone by whether it is of a certain class, lunch time, a football game or even band practice. For centuries, through generation after generation, we have each held our own special recollections of what that building brought to our lives. Over the decades we have seen so many of our schools stand the test of time while others have been converted for other purposes. But no matter what the case we can all still recollect the sound of the bell and the closing of lockers as we rushed off to our next class. There's a lot to be said for that old school. There's a lot to be said for what we learned and what we were given there that would last a life time in our hearts and stories. Who hasn't shared a laugh & a smile with our parents and grandparents who possibly stretched the truth a bit when they told us of walking to school in 5 feet of snow, uphill, both ways. Then again, looking at the photo here of a school house in 1905.... maybe the truth wasn't stretched as far as we think.

And as history has recorded, the oldest schoolhouse in the United States is located in New York in Richmondtown, Staten Island with a date going back over 300 years to 1695. Can you imagine the stories that could be told if these walls could talk? How different would life be going to school then? To be able to go back in time and see the lives of these students, the similarities, the differences, would be amazing. But one thing I am sure of, they too had their own memories just like us of their friendships & their good times in that old building.

It doesn't take much to recall special moments in our lives. Sometimes just seeing an old photo or recalling a story of the past can bring back a lot of fond memories. So if you love our history, nostalgia and antiques as much as we do, why not visit one of our great antique stores and take a trip down memory lane.

Czech & Slovak 2023 Festival

was hosted by the Czechoslovak Moravan Club this year within the most incredible setting of the woods of Binghamton on Laughlin Road which is home to Binghamton's German Club. Just walking up the trail to this amazing site is a thrill as you smell the traditional dishes being prepared like Holubky, Halusky, Pirohy, Zele and of course all the baked goods. With each step you'll hear Polka music coming ever nearer from somewhere up the trail. And once you've arrived you're transported to a different time and place still so ever popular as generations pass on the traditions from one to the next. You'll see friends gathered at tables with their favorite dishes and drinks while you play witness to a community held together with smiles, laughter and friendships. With so many dressed in traditional outfits and a covered area housing the bands & a dance floor where guests of all ages take their turn dancing, it's impossible not to feel part of something very special. There was even an area along with the baked goods to buy some traditional items and see displays from the community to learn more about the culture. Thanks to the Czechoslovak Moravan Club and the Binghamton German Club for putting on and hosting this truly fun event. If you all get a chance, check out both of these clubs on FB for all their great events!

Mitzi Gaynor

Born in Chicago as Francesca Marlene de Czanyi von Gerber this Hollywood beauty would soon be known to the world as Mitzi Gaynor. Growing up, Mitzi was introduced into show business early as her father was a musician and musical director, and her mother was a dancer. It wasn’t long before Mitzi also would be training in ballet and voice. Having moved to Hollywood it was here that her career in entertainment started at just 13 years of age with the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera company singing and dancing. Within 4 years Twentieth Century Fox recognized her talent and signed her to a 7 year contract. In 1950 Mitzi made her film debut in a musical by the name of My Blue Heaven with legends Betty Grable and Dan Dailey. Mitzi was only 19 years old. It was just one year later that she got her first starring role in Golden Girls with Dale Robertson. Leading roles came one after the other for this talented actress who could act, dance and sing, bringing her to the 1954 movie sensation, There’s No Business Like Show Business with Donald O’Conner, Marilyn Monroe, Ethel Merman, Dan Dailey and Johnnie Ray. Following this success audiences from coast to coast would see her in other cinematic greats like Anything Goes with Bing Crosby, The Joker Wild with Frank Sinatra, Les Girls with Gene Kelly, and Happy Anniversary with David Niven. Even with these renowned movies there was still one very special role that seems to stand out amongst all her greats where she played Ensign Nellie Forbush in the musical South Pacific, a role where

audiences fell in love with her all over again with each song. The years to follow would find Mitzi in more movie roles, TV specials, on stage productions and recording albums. She even became a columnist for the Hollywood Reporter. From Best Actress Nominations to Emmys to Lifetime Achievement Awards Mitzi has been honored by fans and her peers alike for her talent and accomplishments. She’s truly one of Hollywood’s greatest legends who still continues to entertain us with her roles from yesterday and today. Who knows what tomorrow might bring. Here’s to you Francesca Marlene de Czanyi von Gerber, Mitzi, on your Birthday! Wishing you the very best today and everyday!

For its 16th year Little Italy hosted the Gusto Italian Festival to a great crowd. These festivals are so important and so much fun for all in attendance giving the opportunity to see and enjoy time with so many of our neighbors, family and friends. It's always a great occasion to run in to people who we may not have seen in months or years. And what a great setting to the event bordered with tents with our favorite Italian foods, drinks and even some great retail vendors. Just walking through the crowd smelling the aroma from the grills and listening to such great live music is sure to put a smile on everyone's face. And of course the night is ended with a spectacular Fireworks Display! What a great event! Thanks to all for putting it on and supporting this great tradition in Little Italy of Endicott!
