Albert Nocciolino

An actor once said “theatre is a celebration, as well as an educating experience on what it means to be alive and empathic towards humanity.” It is with this thought that My Town is proud to present to you Albert Nocciolino, a man who has dedicated his life to creating a diversified entertainment and theatrical company based in Binghamton that has created excitement and emotion throughout our community.

I listened to Albert talk about being a lifelong resident of the area and how it is here that he got his feet firmly planted in the entertainment field. From listening to him I couldn’t help but think of the notion that fate puts us where we have to be to follow our life’s intended path. You see although Albert had a passion for the entertainment field, which was evident in high school and later in college with managing bands and putting on concerts, his intended career choice began to take a different turn when he attended the prestigious Wharton School of Business and majored in Finance.

What could have turned out to be a banking career at Irving Trust, now because of his father’s illness and his need to be home to help with the family, returned him back to his life’s passion. For it was here, in a local Binghamton barber shop that he met a man who was opening the Broome County Arena. It was this man who asked Albert to configure a seating chart that would provide maximum pleasure to the viewing audience; a task Albert accomplished so well that his seating arrangement still stands unchanged to this day. And it brought him not only notice but other opportunities including the position of Assistant Manager.

Fast forward to NAC Entertainment, the company Albert founded in 1976.

At 24 he didn’t have a set mission statement; just a yearning to make this a better place through entertainment. Over the years his golden touch and instinctive ability to know what people want in entertainment has grown his company to present national touring Broadway shows throughout the United States. He has also produced and co-produced Broadway Shows on Broadway including Driving Miss Daisy starring James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave. His accomplishments have brought him great notoriety and acclaim including receiving Tony Awards for several productions, fulfilling the position as Co-Chair of the Intra-Industry/Road Presenters >

Committee and Vice Chair of the Road of The Broadway League, founding member and Chairman of the National Touring Theatre Council and founding member and past President of the IPN. But it is not in these lofty awards and positions that My Town salutes Albert but rather in his giving back to this area in a way that is empathetic to humanity that we thank him.

You see Albert could easily have made his career in NYC where Broadway is just a stone’s throw away but he chose to keep Binghamton his home and make it a great place. And, while raising four amazing children he still found time to give back by serving on various Boards including the Binghamton University Foundation Board, the Boys & Girls Club Binghamton Foundation Board, the Lourdes Hospital Foundation Board and the Chair of the Broome County Community Charities.

He is a man who makes the time to make the connections that matter in a person’s life whether it be in charity work or on the stage with 35 years of entertainment including his latest presentation of the touring production of the Fiddler On The Roof performance on Nov 8th & 9th.

Albert, thank you for believing in your hometown and giving your all to make this a culturally alive place we can all be proud to say is uniquely ours.

Plan location: Location is key and for my free and fun fall photo shoot I chose Arnold Park in Vestal! But there’s no shortage of parks and hiking trails in Broome County with colorful trees and fallen leaves! Or you might not have to look further then your own lawn for Fall scenery!

Camera angles/ideas: Next, just play with your environment! Straight on shots are great if your background has a lot of trees! Shots from a lower angle are great if there is an abundance of autumn leaves still on trees! Don’t be afraid to sit on the ground and angle your camera down to get a picture with fallen leaves! Throw some up in the air! It sounds funny but it actually becomes really fun and creates amazing shots! Also try shots from directly above if you have a ground littered with a bed of beautiful fallen leaves!

Everyone Loves a Parade

The Holiday Meal

Growing up we all looked forward to the Holiday Meal when our Mom and Dad or our grandparents would prepare a table that we could only call a feast. It didn't matter which nationality we were or which traditional food we had, to each of us the dishes became our holiday favorites that we looked forward to each year.

The aroma alone was special giving a flavor to the air that we can recall today no matter how many years have passed. But it wasn't just the food which made the meal special, it was the gathering of family, the good times shared and yes the love. We all looked forward to the Holiday Meal and get togethers, and have done our best to recreate that same tradition in our own families as we got older. Depending on our age we can think of our parents, grandparents or even heard stories of our great grandparents preparing these elaborate meals on old wood stoves which miraculously at the hands & know how of these culinary geniuses created the finest meals with an ease, dedication and warmth to fit any Norman Rockwell painting.

Our parents, grandparents and great grandparents performed miracles on these old stoves with food kept in a cellar pantry or even an ice box with ice purchased from the ice house down on the Susquehanna River. Times were hard for our families and ancestors before us, yet they knew how to make do and be grateful with what they had, creating memories for a lifetime and stories for generations to come. Here's to all our family traditions and the family cooks who helped to make the Holiday Meals back then and today so special for us all.

There's a lot of great memories that we all have from different life experiences. It doesn't take much to recall special moments in our lives.

Sometimes just the aroma from food cooking or the sight of an old kitchen appliance or table from years gone by can bring back a lot of fond memories.

Your Neighbor James William Garnett Season after season if you take a walk through Recreation Park you're sure to see a gentleman who has devoted many years to making sure our park is all it can be. You won't have to guess who he is, you'll hear so many others greeting him as they walk through the park. The gentleman is of course, James Garnett. A man dedicated to his family and community. He's been a friend to all, quick to share a smile and hello, while also making sure our park is looked after.

Surprisingly James is not originally from here. He was born in Buffalo and grew up in Brooklyn where he attended Thomas Jefferson High School. Much of James' youth was spent in Gymnastics and Martial Arts excelling in both and even winning awards on Thomas Jefferson's Gymnastic Team. With a smile he'll tell you that even today, which is at least a few years since those High School days, he still enjoys doing some gymnastic routines.

Doing a good days work and earning your way were ethics that James' father, Willie Garnett taught him. His father was a machinist for Buffalo Steel for 30 years while his mother, Katie May, worked as a Home Attendant while taking care of her family.

During High School James worked for Maxwell Bakery. Upon graduating he applied and took a job working for The Board of Education as a security guard for 6 years.

Then as fate would have it, one of James' friends told him about Binghamton and the great opportunities here. With definite goals in mind, James packed up and made the trip to Binghamton where he settled.

In 1990 James took a job with the YMCA as a trainer and security. Thirty some years later he still works with them. Pursuing his goals he also took a job with the Wyoming Conference working with children, and even managed to take on jobs with Giants on Pennsylvania Avenue and The Crandall Apartments for some 19 years.

In 1995 from suggestions from good friends, James took a position in sanitation with the City of Binghamton and just one year later he started working with the Binghamton Parks Department. And so his career in Parks began.

In his personal life James feels blessed to have his son William, step son Brendon and step daughter Kamari. He's also proud to say he has a grandson now, Jay. And of course there is another truly remarkable part of his life he feels blessed to have, his fiance' Gunilla Hampton.

Looking back and ahead, James is thankful to the many people he has met along the way like Tony DiMaggio, John Whalen, David Laszewski, Fred Strauss and all those he works with in the City and Parks. "There's so many good people here that I would like to mention, we'd probably need an entire book."

Another Halloween has come and gone but like they say a picture will last a lifetime... as will the memories. Trick or Treaters roamed the streets throughout our towns in search of plunder as others found their treasure at Trunk or Treats like the one here in JC in the Schorr Family Stage Parking lot. Thank you to all those at home, trunk or treats and everywhere who helped to make this a great Halloween for so many !

In 1955, a young ballerina danced on stage in the holiday favorite, The Nutcracker. The girl was Goldie Hawn, who was just 10 years old at the time welcoming in a career that would take her through dance, song, comedy and drama on stage, screen and TV becoming an icon in Hollywood in some of America’s favorite shows like Laugh In and movies like Private Benjamin.

You never really know someone’s background and what it took to get to where they are until you take a closer look. In 1968 when Goldie joined the hit show Laugh In, America was taken by this bubbly girl of the 60’s as she joked and go-go danced on our tvs week after week. But there was a lot more to this happy go lucky personality than most knew. Besides starting ballet and tap lessons at three and performing throughout the years, she was also taken by theater having studied drama and even playing Juliet on stage in Romeo and Juliet in the Virginia Shakespeare Festival. After years of training and performing she even opened her own ballet dance studio at just 19. Although the personality of a giddy, young woman may have been seen by audiences, there were years of dedication, discipline and heart that Goldie devoted to entertainment to make it all look so simple and carefree. Audiences loved Goldie as did the entertainment business, casting her in movie after movie like the Cactus Flower for which she won an Oscar starring alongside Walter Matthau and Ingrid Bergman. So many great movies and roles were to follow like Shampoo, Foul Play, Private Benjamin, Best Friends and Bird On A Wire starring with the likes of Warren Beatty, Chevy Chase, Burt Reynolds, Mel Gibson and one of my favorites, the movie Overboard, where she starred with another Hollywood legend, her partner in life, Kurt Russell.

With so many performances on stage, tv & screen mirroring her countless awards and a notoriety that circles the globe, Goldie continues to entertain us with so many new productions as well as yesterday’s greats.

Thank you Goldie for everything and here’s wishing you a very Happy Birthday!

Veterans Day - Armistice Day Over there, over there * Send the word, send the word over there That the Yanks are coming * The Yanks are coming The drums rum-tumming everywhere So prepare, say a prayer * Send the word, send the word to beware We'll be over, we're coming over * And we won't come back till it's over (a song by George M. Cohan) Over there Imagine if you can...these are the words sung by a proud nation as its sons went overseas to defend liberty, the free world, and put an end to the First World War that saw 40 million casualties. Knowing they may never return, thousands of young Americans said good bye to their families and sweethearts to fight for freedom and world peace.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day on the 11th month the First World War came to an end. Celebrations rang from coast to coast as our soldiers returned home to a proud, thankful nation.

In gratitude and celebration of the veterans of World War One, November 11th, "Armistice Day" was declared a National Holiday, "A day dedicated to the cause of world peace", a day earned through the bravery of our troops. Soon the call was answered to honor all the veterans of the United States from every campaign in tribute to their service and self sacrifice to protect this country, its people, and our values, for they have risked all in this dedication to the cause of world peace. So unto Armistice Day, a new day marking our appreciation to all our veterans was born, Veterans Day.

Frank was one of 4.7 million Americans who served in World War I to include so many from here in Broome County as well .
