With early beginnings selling just watches in 1893, Richard Warren Sears and Alvah C. Roebuck offered a wide variety of goods under the name of Sears Roebuck and Co. Within just a few years the catalog had grown to over 500 pages offering just about anything you could think of from supplies for farmers to automobiles, furniture, hardware and dry goods to name just a few.

Although “Building Materials” was also one of their lines, it was failing in the early 1900’s until one of Sear’s managers had the idea to take the vast inventory of materials and package them together as a kit to build homes. So in 1908, Sears issued its first catalog for houses, Book of Modern Homes and Building Plans, featuring 44 different home styles that ranged in price from just $360 to $2890 and could be built in as little as 90 days. It was an overnight success with so many people wanting to be homeowners. The home kits weighed about 25 tons and had over 300,000 parts.

They were usually shipped by train and then trucked to their final destination. Between 1908 and1942 Sears Modern Homes offered 370 different model homes and sold about 75,000 from coast to coast. They even had a school house kit for sale. These popular homes were known for their quality and innovations and went by a variety of appealing names like the Barrington, Americus and the Starlight. Some of these beautiful homes can be found right here in Broome County.

You’ve probably walked right by them never knowing they were a Sears Modern Home, but back in the early 1900’s when a great number of our homes we live in today were being built these were really something to be proud of and still are. Several of these homes in the United States have even made their way to the National Register. If you find yourself owning a Sears Modern Home you have a really nice piece of America’s history and the American dream of owning your own home.
