Taking the train from Binghamton to NYC was a common trip for many who lived here in earlier years. Amongst the passengers you would find many business owners and staff representing the many fashion stores on Court Street. Business names like Drazen’s, Roger’s, David’s, Barbara Moss, McLeans, Fowlers, JC Penny’s and Sall-Stearns were frequent visitors taking the trip to New York City’s Fashion District where they would bring back to Binghamton the best in garments representing what was new and hot in fashion that season and year. Binghamton and Court Street became an icon in fashion where locals would shop for the best in fashion for special events, dinners, cocktail parties, work and just every day attire. And walking in to any of these stores you were treated as a friend and special guest. There’s a certain pride that comes with dressing up and looking your best and these stores brought us the fashions to make every day special. Today there are still stores on Court Street like Sall Stearns and Dove & Co. that continue this tradition from travelling to NYC to bring back the best in fashion for the season right down to the notable treatment they give every guest. As a special feature this month we asked Joanie Ellis and Laura Ellis of Dove & Co. upon returning from their trip to the NYC Fashion District, to share with us a little bit about Dove & Co. and what they look for on their trips for women’s fashion. This slogan was adopted in Binghamton, New York in 1912 in an effort to make Mother's Day a city wide celebration. Many organizations set up flower stands along the streets selling white and red carnations (the official flower for this special day). In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a declaration making Mother's Day a National Holiday! Today over 40 countries celebrate Mother's Day.

Did You Know ???

Johnson City was originally called Lestershire, incorporated as a Village in 1892.

The name was changed to Johnson City in 1916, in honor of George F. Johnson.

The first hospital in Lestershire was the King's Daughters Hospital on Avenue A., founded in 1905. Dr. Charles S. Wilson purchased the hospital and renamed it the Lestershire-Endicott-Union Hospital. In 1911 Dr. Wilson purchased a building at 47 Harrison St. It was opened in 1912 as Lestershire Hospital. It was renamed Johnson City General Hospital after the name of the village was changed. Under Dr. Wilson's leadership, the hospital grew from a 10-bed hospital to a 174-bed institution. Dr. Wilson died in 1926, mourned by the community that had benefited from his skill and tireless years of service. In 1927 the Endicott-Johnson Corporation purchased the hospital from the Wilson estate. A not-for-profit corporation was formed, although the primary source of support was Endicott-Johnson. The hospital was renamed Charles S. Wilson Memorial Hospital to honor Dr. Wilson's memory.

Over the years there have been additions and updates. The towers were opened in 1966. In 1971 they opened the Family Care program. In 1981 Wilson merged with Binghamton General Hospital to form United Health Services. Wilson is now known as Wilson Medical Center. ~by Janet Ottman Johnson City Historian

UHS is embarking on a new expansion of UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City. The Wilson Project will develop a new, six-story, state-of-the-art clinical tower, adding 183,375 square feet of space to the existing hospital.

This is one of the largest capital projects UHS has ever undertaken and the first expansion of the Johnson City campus in more than 30 years. “Most importantly, the goal of the Wilson Project is to create an exceptional patient experience and enhance patient satisfaction with our medical and surgical services,” said John M. Carrigg, president and chief executive officer of UHS. “The new addition will benefit the Southern Tier community in many ways, supporting the quality of care available and expanding our ability to recruit and retain outstanding healthcare providers.”

Construction of the Wilson Project will be done in three different phases.

Completion of the project is set for the summer of 2025.

You only get one shot at this thing called LIFE. Make it the BEST you can!

Chances are you’ve already enjoyed hearing Rhonda Plunkett sing at so many venues as she hits the stage with one of the area’s most incredible bands called Splash. With a dazzling voice and persona to match it is little wonder that the stage loves Rhonda as music is just a part of who she is. There’s nothing so natural as the talent she brings to her art with beginnings that are well founded in a very musical family.

Growing up Rhonda was always surrounded by music. Her Grandpa sang like an angel, her aunts were part of a Gospel Choir and her step dad was in a band which you may remember called Paces. Music was all around her. And with so many greats to listen to as a kid she recalls how much fun she had dancing around the house singing to legends like Diana Ross and Gladys Knight. There was little doubt that music would always be part of her life.

In 5th grade Rhonda took up the violin in school and later switched to the viola and saxophone. She still remembers the encouragement that her music teacher Mrs. Stewart at Maine Memorial Elementary would give her helping her to pursue and develop her talent in music.

Following thru in school with chorus, orchestra and band she won awards and was even offered a scholarship with the Eastman School of Music, but chose to pursue a career in nursing studying at Broome and Binghamton University. (Today you can also find her at UHS Wilson Medical Center as she is one of our heroes in nursing.)

At just 17 Rhonda joined her stepfather’s band as a backup singer and soon started to be more front & center. From there she sang with 4 O’Clock Collection, Common Ground and sat in with Brotherhood before singing with Splash. She even played the lead in one of EPAC’s musicals not too long ago. With such a diverse resume Rhonda will tell you she loves what she is doing. To be able to help people as a nurse and entertain people thru music is a life she feels very fortunate to have.

In the future she would love to try acting again and even fill one of her bucket list dreams singing backup for one of the greats like Gladys Knight.

No matter what she does you can bet she’ll be making this thing called life the best she can! Thank you Rhonda for helping make this truly a great place to live!

Mother’s Day

is as unique to every person as their own fingerprints. They are a part of our being and yet there are no two alike just as each of our feelings on this day may differ. And so, I will tell you my story and I hope you share with me yours.

For me Mothers Day is a blessing. I am blessed for my mom and for being a mom. And from being both I want to say thank you to my Mom and to Nicole. Thank you Mom for bringing me into this world and always being there for me, even now that I am an adult with a child of my own. You have always been a role model from which I try to emulate. You make motherhood seem so seamlessly easy from my first days through to today and I am confident continuing on into the future.

I was born to a military family – my dad having chosen the Air Force to help save lives. He worked with the Atlas-Agena rocket and transitioned to head the recovery missions for the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space missions for the Middle East, Africa, and Indian Ocean – a demanding position that required him to travel a lot and so at times my mom had to play the role of both mother and father. My Mom knew that being a mother meant more than love and protection and care – it meant sacrifice – sacrifice that she freely and without any hesitation always accepted. She knew being a mother means putting your child first no matter how scared you are that you will fail and then never allowing yourself to fail. She also knew that being a mother means that she is not only there to wipe away my tears or nurse me to health but to be my mentor – my first and most significant teacher in life. She has taught me to have a voice, to believe that doing the right thing does not always mean doing what others around you believe is right or doing what is easiest but rather doing what springs from your heart and soul and for which there is good, a lasting good.

I have so many heart warming memories of my mom and I am fortunate to live so close to her now and that close proximity affords me her love and protection and inspiration on a daily basis. The funny thing is my mom thinks I moved back to my hometown in case she ever needed me when in fact it is me who needs my mom.

But being a mom myself I understand her point of view for I am thankful every day for my daughter. I was told by more than a dozen experts that I could not become pregnant and so I always planned to adopt and yet despite all medical opinion and against all odds - they were wrong. And in that moment, the moment I knew I was carrying my child, my life changed. My focus changed from me to her – a change that I welcomed and continue to draw delight from. I have never known such complete happiness as I experienced the day I first set eyes on her beautiful blinking blue eyes – a feeling that carries with me each and every day since. I have found that being a mom is not only about being a teacher but being a student as well for every child brings with him or her such profound lessons that we must instill in our hearts and then share with the world.

I couldn’t be more proud to be Nicole’s mom for countless reasons including her inner beauty, her perseverance, her sense of priorities, her sense of humor, her educational and professional success, her outlook on life and how she is caring and loving to others.

She just like my Mom has taught me so much about life and positivity and love. She is the greatest gift from God to me – just as your child is in your life. And so today I want to say thank you to both my daughter and my mom. And I want to say thank you to all the Moms everywhere for blessing all our lives. ~ Lisa Vallone O'keefe

Joan Collins Joan Collins has long been recognized for the elegance, sophistication and beauty she brings to the screen. Whether you’re watching her in one of her early roles like Land of the Pharaohs, as Alexis on Dynasty or one of her more recent roles there is no mistaking the talent and style that is all her own.

Born in Paddington, England, it was early in life she knew she wanted to be an actress attending the Royal Academy of Arts. At just 17 she began receiving parts in British films which soon turned into starring roles. And in 1955 20th Century Fox took note of this rising star and signed her to a contract where she became an overnight sensation starring in movies like Land Of The Pharaohs with Jack Hawkins and Virgin Queen with Betty Davis and Richard Todd. During the 50’s and 60’s we’d see Joan in dramas and thrillers like Sea Wife where she starred opposite Richard Burton, Bravados with Gregory Peck and even comedies like The Road To Hong Kong with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Entering into the 1970’s Joan continued to make an endless variety of movies in the US as well as back in Britain from dramas to thrillers, science fiction, comedies and even horror films.

Joan’s talent lent itself to a never ending scope of roles such as her renowned role as Alex Colby in the TV hit Dynasty which first aired in 1981.

With a host of awards like Golden Globes, the People’s Choice, Emmies, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and even being made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II, Joan Collins is a star in the eyes of her fans and peers.

Besides acting Joan is a well known author & columnist and a strong advocate for many charities especially those relating to children for which she was named a patron of the International Foundation for Children with Learning Disabilities. In 1988 the Children's Hospital of Michigan also opened the Joan Collins Wing.

Just recently in 2021 Joan celebrated her 70th year in Entertainment. From the big screen to tv, from stage to writing, and for all she has done for charities and helping so many others, Joan Collins is truly a star in so many ways. Thank you Joan for all you have shared with us over the years! See you in the movies.

Where Are They Now?

Kevin Bernhardt Looking across the bar at the Esprit in Binghamton I saw one of my friends, Kevin Bernhardt, come in. Kevin was one of those guys you were just proud to know. And whether you have been friends with Kevin for years or just met him there is something that just stands out about this charismatic guy Whenever you talk to him, he just makes you feel better about yourself. He has a genuine interest and care for others that lends itself to who he is.

That night it was little surprise to hear him say he was leaving to go pursue acting and writing. For many who might try their hand in cinema you may give your best wishes. But for Kevin… you just knew this Binghamton University graduate was going to make it big.

“While building a career as a writer Bernhardt supported himself as an actor, with contract roles on GENERAL HOSPITAL and DYNASTY, followed by numerous ‘bad-guy’ leads in films such as Clive Barker’s HELLRAISER. He studied in the small master acting class of Stella Adler herself. Bernhardt has also taught SCREENWRITING and PRODUCING as a guest at numerous schools including USC and FAMU/Prague.”

Today he is a successful American screenwriter, film actor, television actor, and producer. Since the late-nineties, Bernhardt’s work on some 30 very different screenplays resulted in produced films. They range from more independently-minded entertainment such as THE IMMORTALS to the critically-acclaimed PEACEFUL WARRIOR (based on the best-seller) – but are mostly projects of a more commercial fare such as THE ART OF WAR and (JOHN) RAMBO. These screenplays have attracted Academy Award winners and nominees including Michael Caine, Christopher Plummer, Donald Sutherland, John Lithgow, Nick Nolte, Djimon Hounsou, and Sylvester

Stallone. Other prestigious notables include Kevin Bacon, Michael Shannon, Patrick Swayze, Orlando Bloom, Chris Rock, Wesley Snipes, Charlie Sheen, Dolph Lundgren, Matthew Goode, and Ben Foster among many others.

There was a lot that drew Kevin into this life in Cinema. “Though it’s not easy to admit - initially it was more about how important ‘I’ wanted to feel as an actor. But at some point it became more about how I wanted to make ‘an audience’ feel, as a screenwriter. So for quite a long time, the acting became secondary, although my continued study of it helped me to improve as a writer. At some point, they began to help each other as well. Overall, those bright lights have a lot to do with getting someone into this business. But in order to stay, one must grow as an artist and more so a person, when those lights are off.”

You might also be interested to know that growing up Kevin’s favorite actor was one of Hollywood’s great leading men, Paul Newman. As far as a favorite movie… “Once you have been immersed in this business for too long, you have many favorites. There are varying reasons for which one can appreciate films, and as such it would be like trying to choose between a favorite painting from among the old masters. But if you just break them up by genre - here are a few favorites of mine: Among spiritual films - Malick’s “A Thin Red Line.”

Pure action sci/fi - the best for me is still “The Matrix.”

Horror is between Kubrick’s “The Shining” and Alfredson’s “Let The Right One In.” Sci-Fi is Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Period drama/action is Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now” or Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood.” And of course Malick’s “Tree of Life.””

Kevin’s latest screenplay Echo Boomers (with Michael Shannon and Alex Pettyfer) will be released in 2021. The film Medieval will also be released in Sept of 2022, in which he stars opposite Michael Caine and Ben Foster. The film depicts - the true story of Jan Zizka, who never lost a battle protecting the Protestant faith. Kevin is also presently writing a comedy with the Oscar nominated writer and actor John Cleese.....

Because the two of them decided - that at this point, there’s not much the world can do, except laugh.

A Little Star Wars Trivia 1. George Lucas first thought to have a real monkey in a mask play Yoda.

2. The phrase "I have a bad feeling about this" became a standing gag on set as it is said in every Star Wars movie 3. A lot of great actors were considered to play the part of Hans Solo which Harrison Ford got. The list included Burt Reynolds, Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson & Christopher Walken.

4. With part of the first Star Wars filmed in Tunesia, war was threatened by Libya's leader Muammar Gaddafi who wanted a military vehicle removed from their border between the two countries. That military vehicle was actually a movie set prop...a Jawa Crawler. Lucas agreed it would be best to move the prop rather than start a war.

5. The Polynesian island of Niue, off the coast of New Zealand, actually have collectable Star War Coins minted with a Star Wars character on one side and Queen Elizabeth II on the other which can in fact be used to buy goods and services.

It was 45 years ago on Memorial Weekend, May 25th 1977 that "A New Hope", the first of the Star War movies was released to theaters. If you were around back then you were probably in line with the rest of us to see this epic at the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City.

Of course we were not alone in our anticipation. Lines of soon to be loyal fans lined up all across America to see Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carey Fisher take to the screen in one of the most entertaining and successful film legacies to ever hit Hollywood. Its funny how time sometimes has a way of connecting the dots in your life. Years later when managing the Debbie Reynolds Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas I would at night watch Debbie on stage in her theater as she performed to a sell out crowd of all ages young and old. And to introduce herself to those on the younger side who might not have seen her movies, every night she would introduce herself with a smile to fans under 30 as Princess Leia's mom, which of course in real life she was.

There's a lot of great memories that we all have from movies we loved and different life experiences. It doesn't take much to recall special moments in our lives. Sometimes just watching an old movie, seeing an old photo, leafing though our school yearbooks or even seeing an old toy or game from our youth can bring back a lot of fond memories. As the curtain draws at the Forum the audience knows they are in for a great Broadway show.

Perhaps it is Grease or Peter Pan. Maybe we are about to see An Officer And A Gentleman, Jersey Boys, The Sound of Music, The King and I or maybe the upcoming musical Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. It could be almost any great Broadway Show for over the past three decades Broadway in Binghamton has been bringing the best of Broadway to our community thanks to a lot of great people there like Tina Niles who came to work there just by chance some 24 years ago and plays a very important role working behind the scenes to help bring such great entertainment to our area. We’re very proud this month to share with you a little bit about Tina so the next time you’re watching one of these celebrated Broadway shows you’ll also know a little bit about a really nice small town girl who for some time now has been helping to bring remarkable entertainment to our area.

Tina was born and raised here in Broome County in a small town called Nineveh. Her father was a tractor repair man and her mom worked for Universal Instruments. Growing up she enjoyed playing with the other kids in the neighborhood, riding bikes or just exploring the woods.

Spending time with her parents and little brother Robert were some of her best memories growing up. They did a lot of things together and even went bowling together every weekend.

Tina went to Harpursville High School where she was on the Cheer Leading Team and Color Guard. If you know Tina you won’t be surprised to hear that she was also voted Friendliest and Most Dependable her Senior Year. After High School Tina went to Alfred University where she studied Communications. In college she also helped to promote some concerts and big events which may have just been a prelude to working in the entertainment business, for one day by chance she saw an ad for a position at Broadway In Binghamton and NAC Entertainment. A pretty prestigious company in the entertainment world founded by Binghamton’s own Albert Nocciolino. Tina had just moved back to the area and was looking for a job. You never know how Chance can sometimes lend a hand putting you on a path that you will really enjoy in life. For Tina, answering that ad started her on a career that she feels blessed to be a part of and all the things it offers. “It's something different every day.

I'm not always in the office, some days I'm on the road in a different city or at a show. NAC Entertainment is our parent company. We bring Broadway shows not only to Binghamton but Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, Elmira, Scranton and Erie. I really love my job and talking to our subscribers who I have become friends with over the years. I also enjoy watching patrons' excitement when they come to the theater for the first time to see a Broadway show.”

In her free time Tina still enjoys some of the things she liked doing growing up like bowling and sewing in the winter and spending time in her garden canning everything from beets to pickles. She also enjoys all there is to do here. “Our area has something for everyone. We have an amazing Arts Community and you can always find a festival or band playing some place on a weekend. If you can't find something to do on a weekend, you're not looking.”

You never know where life can lead you. It’s an incredible journey and one we can enjoy every day. Thank you Tina for all you do helping to bring Broadway to our community and thank you for being another reason why this is such a great place to live!

Kathy Corse - My Grandpa’s Hudson

You may know Kathy Corse as the owner of My Grandpa’s Hudson but it’s so much more than a business for her, it’s a part of who she is. One of Kathy’s fondest memories as a child was riding in her Grandfather's 1948 Hudson.

"Grandpa made every road trip so much fun!" Those memories were the reasons Kathy decided to open My Grandpa’s Hudson where others can take a ride in this magnificent classic and relive a moment in history while also creating their own memories.

Kathy’s family moved to Binghamton when she was just two. In high school she was active in cheerleading and color guard and was even voted Miss Spirit. A graduate of B.C.C , Kathy’s not only a business owner, she’s also raised two incredible children, been an advisor for SUNY Broome and can add to her resume a strong background in executive sales holding the title of V.P. in more than one business. And soon she’ll be a published author.

As many others in this great community, Kathy has a passion for helping others. It’s evident in her everyday life, her role with the Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church and in her business. Through My Grandpa’s Hudson she’s given rides to the HCA, Mothers and Babies, The Goodwill Theatre, and, as a breast cancer survivor, Kathy also plans to offer complimentary rides to women currently going through treatment. Thank you Kathy for truly helping make this a great place to live !!!

Like my mom, neither one of us have measured when we “create “ in the kitchen. I feel that cooking is an art of expression. It’s a personal and individual story from the heart to the stomach. I like to experiment and learn, and my family and friends are my audience.

Mom's Meatball Recipe ~Ingredients~

- Eggs - Bread Crumbs - Lots of Grated Cheese

- Oregano - Basil - Parsley

- Lots of Garlic - Salt/Pepper - Meatloaf Mix

Hints : - 2 eggs per ounce of meat - more eggs than breadcrumbs

~Directions~ Bake at 450 to brown and then cook in your big pot of homemade sauce.
