Jo and Tony Marascia

A Cinderella Story Once upon a time there was a young woman named Jo from Endicott who was attending a wedding. As were the times of the late 1940’s, wedding receptions could sometimes be a great, open event where anyone who wanted to join in the celebration of the marriage could enjoy a day of great food and dancing while celebrating with old friends and making new ones. Jo was young and very pretty, attracting the eye of many a young man who had hoped for a dance. And as fate would invite, a young Binghamton man, Tony Marascia, had seen Jo from across the room. He couldn’t take his eyes off her. So, he got up the courage, walked across the floor to her, and asked her for that first dance. For the two, the dance was something very unexpected, something very special. But when the dance was over, young Tony, much like the prince in Cinderella, had no idea who this beautiful woman was, where she lived or how to get a hold of her. She had slipped away and did not leave behind a glass slipper. All he was left with was a dance that he would never forget and the memory of a girl he knew was the one he would marry.

And so our prince set out to go to every dance and every wedding in hopes of finding Jo. Week after week his search ended with no site of Jo. But finally, months later, there she was at another wedding. Tony walked over to her and asked her for another dance. With a smile Jo accepted, for she too had known Tony was the one she would marry. And so they did. On November 12th of that same year in 1949, Jo and Tony became husband and wife dancing together for the next 49 years.

The years were good and they made a good life for their four children to come. And before you know it they became grandparents to 12 more and great grandparents to 24 children. When you look back the years may seem to have gone fast, but there was a lot of living that went on in those years that made for a happy home on Evans St in Binghamton and then Maple Ave in Chenango Bridge. Years that we could surely gather together and fondly say….

And they lived happily ever after.

Bartender of the Month

Joe Silata

Chances are if you visited the Tioga Downs Casino you may have met our Bartender of the Month Joe Silata. Joe was one of the original bartenders for Tioga when they first opened their doors, and a nicer guy you’d be hard pressed to find.

Joe was born in Franklin, PA. His family soon moved to Elmira where he grew up and went to High School. Growing up Joe loved to play sports, especially baseball playing in Little League. As many kids did he collected sports memorabilia and had his favorite teams which were all about Pittsburgh. When not at school or playing sports you might just find Joe down by the water fishing with his friends.

After High School Joe went to Corning Community College where he received his Criminal Justice A.S. Degree. It was here in College that he first started bartending at an old local favorite, Sporty McGee’s. A great job which helped to prepare him for a great career.

It’s been 15 years now that Joe has been bartending at Tioga Downs.

Since they opened in 2006 he's made a lot of friends there in both fellow staff & guests. Joe loves that every day is a bit different. “You never know what the day may hold and who you might meet. It’s a blessing working with so many good people like Johnny who shares the bar with me.”

It wasn’t too long ago though that something incredible happened in Joe’s life. Something that he is thankful for every day. He met and married the love of his life, his bride Erin. Erin actually grew up one block from where Joe lived. They knew each other but it wasn’t until one day at a party that they actually got to talking. It was then that they realized just how much they enjoyed being with each other and how much they had in common. So much so that now that they are married they do everything together. Although Erin was originally a Yankees fan she’s come around to also being a Pittsburgh fan teaming up with Joe to catch games on TV or in person to watch the Steelers or Pirates and yes even a trip to Yankee Stadium. Life is incredible for the two.

Besides their passion for sports they love travelling throughout the state and up and down the east coast to visit landmarks, historical sites or just some great towns. Here in New York they also enjoy the wine and beer country, all the great restaurants there are to visit, or just a day out fishing. Even just staying home is a blessing for the two enjoying their time with family and friends and even taking the time to do things like working on their home and yard which for them has its own rewards.

Joe’s life is one that he is very thankful for. As he relayed; “From my wife, to my family and friends to my job, I have a lot to be grateful for.”

Thank you Joe for sharing a bit of your story with us and for being another reason why this is a great place to live. Cheers!

Have you ever been taken back to a day gone by when you heard a favorite song from long ago. Just like records of old our antique stores are home to unlimited memories that are sure to bring a smile to your face.

We caught up with the folks at the Most Holy Rosary Church in Maine as they put on their Oktoberfest Celebration for the community.. The Maine Community Band was playing for guests who got to enjoy this great fall day outside with a selection of ethnic food and drinks to include of course beer in an old fashioned picnic setting under roof, tent and sky. Love these community events!!

Oktoberfest

During the months of Sept and Oct all across the world Oktoberfest Celebrations find their ways to cities just like ours. The origins of this festival are really pretty simple but it may just surprise you. Believe it or not, this great celebration came out of the love of one prince for a princess. And so the story goes.... Back in 1810 on Sept 12, Prince Ludwig of Bavaria wed Princess Therese. Such was the joy of the royal couple that they invited all the citizens of Munich Bavaria to a royal festival held on the fields in front of the city. Thousands and thousands of people came to celebrate the wedding enjoying food, entertainment, horse races and wine & beer tasting. Even the children put on a show dressing in the traditional costumes of Bavaria.. And so each year to honor the Royal Couple the festival took place and grew and grew to spread all across the world into what we have today... And now you know. So the next time you are celebrating Oktoberfest, lift your drink in toast to King Ludwig and Queen Therese. Cheers!

FIT FOR LIFE : Tom Carter Mention the name Tom Carter to anyone who knows him, and the next words spoken will probably be “He’s a legend”. But if you ask Tom about his incredible running career and other accomplishments, he’ll probably turn the conversation to complimenting your achievements while telling you he’s just been fortunate to do what he loves for so long in a community that he loves. If you know Tom, you know those words come from the heart. And heart is what has made this athlete excel to levels few have seen.

Tom as a runner made headlines for decades, with national rankings, over 500 wins and records that still stand like the Vestal XX, where he ran the course in 1:03:17 while sprinting the final mile in 4:12. He’s also known as a Physical Education Faculty Member, and a Cross Country and Tennis Coach for SUNY Broome for the last few decades. You may even know him as Stick Man, a nickname given to him for his unreal basketball exhibitions spinning basketballs on sticks approximately 40 ft high in the air for national TV programs, over 80 NBA games and countless schools across the country. Incredibly he’s been doing this “Long Stick Basketball Show “ for over 30 years now…

for free. His payment being the chance to inspire people as he does what would seem impossible.

So where did it all start? Growing up Tom had a paper route which rather than walking, he ran every day, carrying 150 papers. Tom dreamed of sports and tried out for Seton Catholic’s Football, Basketball and Baseball Teams without any luck. But one day changed everything and laid out a path that would become Tom’s future.

Tom was in 9th grade and stepped up to the starting line for the school’s physical achievement test 600-meter run. He crossed the finish line with a school record. Tom really didn’t think much about it till one day one of the crosscountry runners stopped him as he got on the bus to go home. He tried to convince Tom to try out for the Cross-Country Team. Tom figured why bother, I won’t make that team either. But while sitting on the bus something came over Tom and he got off the bus and tried out. He made the team and within two weeks he won his first multi school race. Who knows, perhaps all those days running his paper route caught up with a young man who had the heart and desire to be a champion. And the rest as they say is history.

Tom has had an impact on our running community that is truly an inspiration.

Not just from all his wins and dedication but also in his every day acts to help encourage and develop other athletes while being what can only be described as a true sportsman and friend to everyone who knows him. His advice to all, which has been his guide through an incredible career ... “If you have a dream, chase it, and see who you can be.” Thank you, Tom, for being an inspiration and helping to truly make this a great place to live.

Last month The Greater Binghamton Sports Hall of Fame inducted 13 of our local sports legends into the rolls.

These exceptional men and women have dedicated themselves over years to their sport and the people within. They are truly a role model to us all in sportsmanship and what it takes to strive to be the best that you can be.

He shared with everyone how much it means to be able to pay tribute to these great athletes... something he will always remember.

Thanks to all associated with the Greater Binghamton Sports Hall of Fame for putting on this great event! We hope everyone will get a chance to make it down to the Hall of Fame Museum at the Oakdale Mall honoring our community's legends of sports. It is a fantastic tribute to the area and our athletes.

On these pages we would like to share with you two of the stories we have had the pleasure to bring to you in the past of two of the inductees; Tom Carter & Bill Clark. Congratulations to all!

Interview with Bill Clark

You have a duty to yourself, to God, and to your family to

LIFT MORE THAN WEIGHTS.

Bill Clark is a world champion power lifter, international medalist in weight lifting, Guinness world record holder, motivational speaker, youth group leader and performing strength demonstrator.

But with all his accomplishments Bill thanks God for all of it. He is a strong believer that timing is everything and everything happens for a reason.

In third grade Bill’s father took him to a pro wrestling match and his interest was sparked. In ninth grade Bill was training In the gym when the man training beside him, who was getting ready for his chance to be in the Olympics for weight lifting, offered to help him train.

After seeing his motivation and work in the gym Bill was offered a chance to train for a week with the legends of the strength training world. His coaches saw the explosive power in Bill at such a young age and knew his potential.

During his career Bill won many titles, but his body was wearing down and he

needed to find another path where he could take all of his training and abilities and shower the community with all he has learned.

Bill looked deeply into his upbringing and the obstacles he has overcome; his father passing away when he was a young boy to his mother’s mental illness. Bill wanted to encourage people and show them that they can do whatever they put their mind to. Bill is a strong believer that sight is just perception, the brain lets us choose how we see things. If just one person is helped, then Bill felt as if he has accomplished his mission.

This led to a book that he co-authored with Trent Patterson. Trent, focused on the nutritional side, and Bill focused on the psychological side. They finished the book in a year. Check out "Lifting Spirits: World Champion Advice for Everyday Living".

To everyone out there, you have a duty to yourself, to God, and to your family to “LIFT MORE THAN WEIGHTS”.

Broome County Sports Fall is here again and with it starts another great year of school sports. It doesn't matter if you're still in school or decades past your graduation, everyone can relate to how much fun it is or was to compete or go watch your school team compete. I still remember meeting up with friends and family to watch our Friday night football games. For us the best game was the North vs Central game though every school had their widely anticipated rival game like the UE vs Vestal match up. With posters dotting the hallways and pep rallies shouting the battle to come everyone wanted to witness the great event. Radio stations must have gone crazy with all the requests to play "We Will Rock You" for every team and school. Besides the games themselves who could forget the marching bands when they took the field or the cheerleaders with their seemingly endless number of levels to their pyramids. If you happened to go to North High you know what I am talking about. These warrior cheerleaders would build a human pyramid so high the applause felt like you were at a rock concert.

Besides our junior high and high school sports we're pretty fortunate to live in a community which enjoys great sports at the collegiate level with the SUNY BROOME Hornets & the Binghamton University Bearcats, plus amateur level sports & higher such as The Bulldogs, Rumbles Ponies, Devils, and Stallions. But it doesn't stop there. We have endless road races, martial arts, boxing, triathlons, & gymnastics to name just a few more.

This area is and has been so rich in sports that we have produced an endless line of champions at every level to include State and National Champions, Olympic & Pro Athletes and even World Champions. To name just a few in addition to our recent Greater Binghamton Sports Hall Of Fame inductees we have; Jack Sharkey (World Heavyweight Boxing Champion), Christopher Coleman and Randy Will (Olympic Bobsledders), Mayumi Peju (Olympic Taekwondo medal winner), Johnny Logan (Major League Baseball 4 time All Star), Mike Dunham (Olympic Hockey, NHL player and coach), Maine Endwell Little League (World Champions) Parker Stokes ( 2 time National Track H.S. Champion, King Rice ( 2 time HS Basketball State Champion, 2 time Parade All Star, Collegiate player and coach. The list really does go on and on. They are all an inspiration to us while also giving us claim to a lot of bragging rights.

Good luck to all our athletes and if you'd like to join the ranks of fans watching make sure to look up the schedule of your favorite team and guidelines for attending. During this pandemic if you can't watch them in person you may still be able to catch their broadcasts on a variety of media.

Elizabeth "Lizzie" Beagell Elizabeth Beagell grew up in Kirkwood, NY. Like most high school students she

loves hanging out with her friends and family and catching up on her favorite TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy. She also likes to read, fish, and any sport. Ever since she was old enough to be able to hold a ball she's been drawn to sports.

Even at 3 weeks old she used to watch her older sisters play. And early on she played travel softball till middle school & travel volleyball from 8th grade till present.

Now Elizabeth is enjoying her junior year of high school at Windsor Central High, home of the Black Knights. High School years are a very import time in everyone’s life. Besides the education & life lessons you learn to help prepare you for the world there are friendships and memories that are created to last a lifetime. There’s a balance in every high school student’s life that they navigate between academics, family and friends, and for many like Lizzie there’s also sports. On the academic side her favorite subjects are writing, science and math. She is in French Club, Honor Society and has continuously been on the High Honor Roll. On the sports side of her life she previously played basketball and softball and now plays lacrosse and volleyball. She loves everything about volleyball; loves to kill the ball and being a part of a team. For her the team is everything. Besides the dedication and talent they all have, there is a bond with all of them that has made them all family. And leading the family are two great coaches; Scott Symons and Katie Rogan. Lizzie just couldn’t be prouder than being a part of them all. Recently, Lizzie’s success in volleyball gained well deserved attention being covered on Showcase Sports TV. The header read "The other teams know Lizzie Beagell. And, they know to stop her. Windsor volleyball's main offensive weapon is the subject of this school year's first player profile on Showcase Sports TV”. Nice job!

After high school she would like to go to college for medicine possibly a surgeon. For a career she is thinking about being a trauma surgeon or even a physician’s assistant.

But no matter what Lizzie chooses we know it’s going to be a good life and she will continue making us all proud. Congratulations Lizzie on all your successes!

Vestal Cross Country hosted a Junior High School Cross Country Race at Arnold Park over a challenging course that has seen past greats like Sue Girard, Dwayne Galbi, and Danny Mullins. These young athletes from several neighboring schools today took the field racing over a course that offered up hills and country trails at the scenic park. There was even a race for kids not yet in junior high whose winner is sure to be a standout in years to come.

The Munsters

The 1960’s brought us many family shows about the typical family living in America and their day to day adventures. The Munsters, a comedy which aired on CBS in Sept of 1964 was also about a typical, yet not so typical family from Transylvania that now lived just outside of Los Angeles at 1313 Mockingbird Lane. Each character with exception of the niece were fashioned after the characters of vintage monster movies. The plot of course was having this family of monsters living a suburban life unaware that they were somehow different.

And as with most tv shows of the era they even taught life lessons such as in one episode where Herman Munster (Frankenstein) explains to his son Eddie (a Werewolf) .... "The lesson I want you to learn is that it doesn't matter what you look like. Whether you are tall or short; or fat or thin; or ugly or handsome – like your father – or you can be black, or yellow, or white. It doesn't matter. What matters is the size of your heart and the strength of your character."

If you grew up in the 60’s or watched the reruns of the show you were sure to love it. Everything about the family complete with a pet dragon named spot, the house they lived in with secret passages and a mad scientist lab, and the events of 70 episodes were nothing but fun, especially if you were a kid. But watching them today even as an adult you are sure to get a kick out of this great series and a cast that made it all come to life.

Here's a little trivia about the show and cast of the Munsters whose name came from combining fun and monsters.

The character 'Herman Munster' was ranked #19 in TV Guide's list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time" Both The Munsters and The Addams Family originally aired only a week apart in 1964.

In real life, Al Lewis (grandpa) was one year younger than Yvonne who played his daughter.

The Munster's House was also on an episode of Leave it To Beaver.

Bill Mummy from Lost In Space was originally cast for the role of Eddie.

Angela Lansbury has been winning the hearts of

fans on stage, screen and tv since the 1940s. Her mother also appeared in many film roles including one with Angela in the hit horror suspense The Picture Of Dorion Grey. Born in England, Angela and her family escaped the war's bombing in England to come to the United States. Studying acting briefly in NYC she moved to Hollywood where she was immediately discovered by MGM at just 17 years of age. Two years later she appeared in her first three movies; Gas Light, National Velvet and then The Picture of Dorion Grey. Overnight Angela became a star! People all across the world fell in love with this beautiful, talented star. The months and years to follow would bring many more roles on screen like Till the Clouds Roll By, The Three Musketeers and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

Her talents as a singer also shined through on stage and screen. I always love to hear her voice as she sings the theme to Disney's Beauty And The Beast.

On TV Angela gained even more notoriety with hits like Murder She Wrote. Over this incredible career Angela has attained numerous awards and honors to include an Honorary Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement. "Robert Osborne presented her with the Oscar saying in part "Angela has been adding class, talent, beauty, and intelligence to the movies ever since her film debut in 1944. "The Oscar was inscribed .... "To Angela Lansbury, an icon who has created some of cinema's most memorable characters inspiring generations of actors."

We've Got Talent Community Bands have always been a part of our heritage boasting over 10,000 bands across the United States back in the late 1800’s. These bands have been entertaining locals at a variety of special occasions from holidays and patriotic celebrations, to dances, parades and outdoor concerts. One such band we're proud to tell you about has its heart right here in Vestal and is so named the Vestal Community Band. The group’s members have an incredible variety of backgrounds.

As Gail Markstein, the band’s conductor shared with us “We have Music educators, performance majors and other professions. We have former Binghamton Philharmonic musicians, a member of the National Sousa Band, math teachers, special education teachers, engineers, retired IBM folks and occasionally a high school student or two. Many of these people play in other groups as well, and the IBM employees were part of the IBM band. College students often play with us when school is not in session. Most of these musicians started playing in public school when they were in fourth or fifth grade. The common thread that runs through this band is the love of making music and sharing it with others."

The Vestal Community Band has been performing since 1987. You may have caught them at the Vestal Gazebo, Arnold Park or even the Oakdale Mall. They even perform at some of our nursing homes for our seniors to enjoy. The ensemble plays a variety of music from show tunes to musicals to the more traditional concert band themed music. One thing that goes hand in hand with musicians is the extraordinary amount of time and dedication they have put in over the years to their craft and to bring us some truly great performances. I had the opportunity to catch one of their rehearsals and I have to tell you, you're going to love what they have in store for you. Many people ask who I learned to cook from, and the answer is... no one! Home cooked family meals just weren’t something we did often growing up, so I broke the cycle and taught myself how to cook appetizing, yet very healthy meals for my family!

We cook every night in our household and I host every holiday dinner! Life is better with good food and family!

Jen’s Fall Marinara ~Ingredients~ (Serves 2)

-1 medium zucchini, sliced -1 small onion, chopped -1tbsp. olive oil -1 medium spaghetti squash -1 jar of your favorite marinara -2 6oz. Chicken breast -salt, pepper, garlic & Italian seasoning

~Directions~

*Seasoning each part of the recipe calls for layers of flavor!

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2. Poke holes in your spaghetti squash & microwave for 5 minutes.

3. Remove squash from microwave, cut in half length-wise, season & bake for approx. 40 minutes, or until fork tender.

4. Sauté & season zucchini & onion in olive oil until lightly browned. Remove from pan and set aside.

5. Using the same pan, grill your chicken until fully cooked, about 4 minutes each side. Set aside.

6. Adding your zucchini/onion mixture back to the pan, pour 1 jar of marinara over the mixture. Season and cook for about 2 minutes, stirring frequently.

7. Remove the cooked spaghetti squash from the oven & shred it using a fork until it looks similar to spaghetti noodles.

8. Plate your spaghetti “noodles,” top with marinara mixture & grilled chicken. Add a garnish or some Parmesan and enjoy!
