Throughout the year you'll always find some great local events at many of our local clubs, organizations, churches, schools and even first responder entities like our fire department bbq's and pancake breakfasts. They're always a great place to get together with friends while helping to support so many great causes. So pick up your calendars and take up the search to see what festivities may be taking place around you. Maybe we'll see you there!
We stopped by our VFW Post 478 to see some of our friends tonight. It's always a good time to come here but tonight the Post was also celebrating Diane's Birthday with the Lone Ryderz Band in roll call. These folks are always welcoming to everyone and quick to lend a smile. Just good people who share a love for country and a heart big enough to share with all who walk thru their doors.
This Spring and Saint Patrick’s you’ll find many ways to celebrate right here in Broome County. Looking for a great parade? You need look no further than right here in Binghamton and Hillcrest. Maybe you’re in the mood for a good race. How about the St. Patrick’s Day 4-miler. Maybe you’re in the mood to take in a traditional holiday meal or listen to some Irish music, well there’s no shortage of great Irish Restaurants and Pubs in the area not to mention all the other establishments which will also share in the celebration. Another great venue to catch is Broadway in Binghamton’s "Cat's" & "On Your Feet" and The Binghamton Philharmonic's "Pops At The Forum". And in the event you’d like to just enjoy the holiday at home with family and friends there’s always some great St. Patrick’s classic movies to watch like our favorites The Quiet Man and Darby O’Gill and the Little People. You can even try making an old Irish recipe for dinner. With every holiday there is no limit to what the area offers, so have fun, be safe, and may this
Old Irish Proverb find you.

The Well Dressed Man ~ 1890
Open a New York newspaper or magazine in 1890 and you may have seen ads for the latest men's fashions for the spring and summer (above) just as we do today. As old photos and even some rare videos from the period can still give testament to, you were sure to see men dressed to what their means could afford to look their best in any social setting. A suit coat, vest and tie were the norm for even a trip downtown or to the park. And of course, there was one item of fashion that no man could be without, their hat, of which there were many popular choices from derbies and bowlers to soft caps and even the top hat of Abraham Lincoln fame. Moving forward, from decade to decade we've seen the change in fashions and the return of others. But the one thing that has always remained is the desire to look our best. A trait that for decades, one of our favorite stores, Sall-Stearns, has been helping men in the community with starting with our first suits in our youth and on thru the years for any occasion and need. No this is not an advertisement, just a thank you to Ron Sall for all he, his family, and staff have brought to us from generation to generation.

A Mother's Love
When it comes to a mother's love for her children there are few obstacles that could deter her from providing for her child in so many ways, creating memories that last a lifetime. There's a strength and determination within, which she lends with the appearance of ease every day. In a moment frozen in time in the early 1900's we see here a Binghamton mother on the frozen water of the Chenango. It may be that errands need to be done and the river needs to be crossed, or simply that there is no snow and she wants her daughter to enjoy a sled ride. But in either case the accompanying objective is clear. No matter what the difficulty is, she will create a special time for her daughter where none existed, no matter what the obstacle.
It doesn't take much to recall special moments in our lives. Sometimes just seeing an old photo from years gone by can bring back a lot of fond memories. So if you love our history, nostalgia and antiques as much as we do, why not visit one of our great antique stores and take a trip down memory lane.

In MGM’s musical “In The Good Old Summertime”, the closing scene shows Hollywood legends Judy Garland and Van Johnson with their young daughter. There was something very special about this scene however other than the closing of a great movie. The 3 year old girl in the movie was in real life Judy’s daughter, Liza May Minnelli, making her first ever screen appearance. A special moment for Judy and a first glimpse to audiences of a great star to come in years to be. Liza Minnelli, is one of only 16 performers to have received Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards to which can be added numerous awards and nominations for Golden Globes, the Theatre World Award, Bafta, and also the Sant Jordi and David di Donatello Award for Best Foreign Actress. She has even been awarded the title of a Knight of the French Legion of Honour. If there was ever a star born who's talent, energy and hard work had no limits, Liza was truly that person. Liza was born in L.A. to actress Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli. The resemblance between Liza and her mother is unmistakable from the same smile, eyes and even laugh. To watch them in early years perform together is nothing short of magic.
As a young girl Liza appeared on many Tv shows and specials and even danced and sang with Gene Kelly on his first Tv Special. Before she was 20 she was performing in night clubs in Vegas, LA, NY and Chicago and won a Tony on Broadway for her role in Flora The Red Menace. She went on to star in other stage productions, her own tv specials, award winning movies like Cabaret and Arthur, and to perform at Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden and even The London Coliseum for the Royal Variety Performance with then Prince and now King Charles in Attendance. She’s shared the stage with other greats like Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Michael Jackson and appeared on tv favorites like Laugh In and The Ed Sullivan Show. She’s recorded hit albums, danced, choreographed and devoted herself to many charities. Her accomplishments and performances have spanned decades and are as long as the many friends and fans she has made along the way. For me my favorite performance of hers is to see her sing the song her mother made famous around the world, “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”. Within her as she sings this timeless song you see the girl, young woman and the star she has become, and you'll also see in Liza her mother in every note and emotion. It will pull at your heart bringing back so many memories. Happy Birthday Liza!

TALENT The Binghamton Crosby’s
In 1982 a Binghamton singing group sensation, The Binghamton Crosby’s, took to the stage for the first time selling out their very first show. Now celebrating their 40th Anniversary, they’ve been entertaining guests and winning competitions for years with their remarkable a cappella sound.
You can always catch them performing throughout the area, but these singers have also performed at universities in the northeast, at primary and secondary schools across the state, and on the incredible stages of Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center and even the Beacon Theater on Broadway. To their list of credits they’ve made the finals of the ICCA (International Championship of Collegiate A-Cappella) competition four times, one of the highest totals among a cappella groups nationwide while taking home honors such as Best Album, Best Soloist, Best Arrangement and Best Choreography. And in 2003 they won the competition !!! If you’ve seen Pitch Perfect, it’s the real-life version of the competition that was depicted in the movie.
These guys are really great performers, but they will tell you they’re just regular college students who like to sing and have fun. Typically each singer is only in the group for 4 years as you have to be enrolled at SUNY Binghamton to be a member. If you want to join their ranks, you’re in luck, they hold auditions every semester. And whether you want to be on stage with them or in the audience watching them, make sure you go see them, and congratulate them on an amazing 40 years !!!

Did You Know?
Your New Year's Resolution a couple of months back may have been to budget your money better this year, just as it has been for so many others in the years before. Let's take a look at your day if it were a hundred years ago in the triple cities in March of 1923 and how much things cost back then. Well its morning and you're starting your day with a nice cup of coffee, a couple of eggs, toast and a bowl of cereal while you read the paper. A pound of coffee in 1923 would cost you about 25 cents/lb from the Public Market on Clinton Street. Eggs are just 43 cents for 2 dozen at the Mohican on Chenango, and a box of Corn Flakes from McKinney and Co. was another 7 cents. You probably even made your own
bread and why not, a 24 lb sack was just about a buck. You could find all these specials in the Binghamton Press which back then was also just 3 cents.
Now its off to work in your new 1923 Buick Roadster which you purchased for $865 from The New York Sales Company on 34 State Street. You can afford it. You have a nice job here in Binghamton and in 1923 the average salary is about $62 a week.
Now its lunchtime and you're off to the Carlton for their 50 cent Lunch Special.
While dining you here a couple of guys in the next booth talking about AT&T stock at $125 a share. You'll have to think about that one. That's two weeks pay for just one share.
Well back to work and then home again with a quick stop at the Mohican for a Porter House Steak to take home. And why not at only 32 cents a pound. The evening is looking pretty good as you pull in the driveway of the 5 room house you rent on Leroy St which runs you $75 a month.
After dinner maybe you'll hit the Stone Opera House for a live theatrical performance. Balcony seats are on sale for 50 cents. Or maybe, just maybe, you'll sit on the porch and talk with friends about what things might cost in 100 years.
