On The Town

At the Dugout you can go from 9-5 to a vacation just by walking thru the front door. We came by to enjoy their first bike night of the season where inside we found a great rustic sports bar and restaurant, and in a few steps, you can be outside travelling to a land with palm trees and a sandy beach complete with music and a beach bar. It's a great atmosphere here with fantastic staff, great food and a lot of fun customers. What a great place to enjoy yourself!

Boating and Fishing Opportunities in the Greater Binghamton area.

If you enjoy the outdoors in New York State, we have countless worthwhile destinations. However, if you're from the Greater Binghamton area, you can satisfy your boating and fishing needs close to home. I'll be discussing our 2 main rivers in this article, the Chenango and Susquehanna.

Let's start with our biggest river, the Susquehanna. The Susquehanna is the longest river east of the Mississippi, 5th oldest river in the world (roughly 250 million years) and one of America's longest non-navigable rivers, due to several spillways between the headwaters, near Oneonta, and the Chesapeake Bay. Fishing and boating opportunities are plentiful and access ramps are generously scattered throughout the area. (dec.ny.gov/outdoors for locations) My favorite species to target are Smallmouth Bass, which grow over 6lbs locally. Check fishing regulations for seasons and limits, but you can enjoy catch and release from Spring through Fall. I'll hold off on the details of techniques and tackle because the information is vast and YouTube simplifies it with hundreds of informative videos.

After Bass, I love to pursue Channel Catfish, Walleye, Huge Carp and a healthy population of Northern Pike. Again, refer to DEC websites for seasons and regulations. It's not uncommon to catch several species in one trip and I'll detail some productive areas.

The Chenango River, from Greene to Binghamton, is probably my favorite water for Walleye and Pike. It's also loaded with Bass, but average size are slightly smaller than the Susquehanna. If you have a canoe or Kayak, you can launch at Depot rd in Chenango Forks and have a beautiful float down to Chenango Bridge, where there's a dirt ramp under the rt 12A bridge.

Along the way you'll see several Eagles nests and the owners of the Beer Tree Brewery, in Port Crane, encourage you to walk up the bank and enjoy food and beverages. Fishing is best wherever you see a stream pouring into the river.

The Susquehanna is a larger body of water, producing larger specimens across the board. Easy access to productive water is found at Sandy Beach, off Conklin Ave, Murphy's Island, in Vestal and Grippen Park, in Endicott.

You're able to launch motorless or power boats at all 3 locations.

Before venturing out on these local rivers pay close attention to water volume, measured in CFS, cubic feet per second. For volume information go to USGS sites and hit keywords Susquehanna or Chenango. These gauges give you daily information on water fluctuations. Needless to say, if the gauges are going up after a heavy rain, reschedule your trip. Summer is here and bringing with it an endless amount of outdoor events, concerts, cookouts and of course Antique Car Shows. This year Shangri-La's Classic Cruizers and Dee & Kevin Rung held their 2nd Annual Car Show at Slaughterland Scream Park up by the Airport with all proceeds going to support the Speak Animal Hospital. So many great people came out to help like Dustin Tang-Chung who helped organize the event and Mickayla VanBuren who was one of the sponsors of this great event. (You may recognize Mickayla from so many other great events for charity that she helps to sponsor or even as one of the local Certified Diesel Mechanics in the area.) There's a lot of pride that goes into restoring these classics and when you combine that with a great cause like SPEAK its just a win win for everyone.

A little bit about..... "Shangri-La's Classic Cruizers is the product of the shut down pandemic in spring of 2020.

Lots of beautiful cars and historians with no place to go....gas was cheap... so we started with 6-8 cars, meeting in parking lots in Tioga and Broome County...by the time we did our second annual spring tour cruise in April 2021, we had an astounding 51 cars lined up to make a 55 mile tour cruise."

Getting your Classic back on the road. ~ by Matthew Bernard Now that summer is here a lot of us will be bringing our old classics out of storage to get them ready to enjoy for the summer. As for me, I'm happy this month to be taking a 1968 McLeran Can-Am (pictured below) out of storage to get it ready to run. As with all classics you want to make sure you do everything you can to keep them maintained, safe and looking their best. There’s a series of things that I always like to do that don’t really take a lot of time but may Matthew Bernard save you a lot of worry, time and even money down the SCCA's 2012 New York State road. Here's a few things that I hope will help you get your Road Race Champion classic on the road and enjoying your summer.

Each year before starting the car I always like to do a good visual check. If you’ve had your classic in storage for a few months there are some things to look for. Always check under your car for any leaks. Seals and gaskets may have cracked or dried out. Check to see if your brake lines or gas lines have leaked any fluid. If you do see fluid anywhere there’s a lot you can tell by where it leaked, the color and even the smell. While you’re outside the car check your tires for the right air pressure and check for any dry rot which may cause concern.

Next look under the hood. Check your battery for the proper charge and if the terminals have corrosion. Check all your fluid levels & fill if necessary. You may want to check your air filter housing and around the engine and even in your tail pipe. Sometimes mice will find a home in these areas for the winter. And while you have your air filter out hold it up to a light to make sure it’s clean. You can also check your belts to see if they are in good shape.

When you have given your car a good visual and made any adjustments needed now it’s time to start it up but don’t drive it just yet., just start it up and listen to the motor to see if it sounds ok. With your foot on the brake go thru the gears to see if they seem in check.

With the car back in park give the accelerator a little pressure and again listen for how the car is running. You may hear some squealing from the belts but if the tension looked good and you didn’t see any wear or cracks the squeals should go away with a little use.

You may also hear some noise from the lifters and valves. That’s normal, the engine parts are dry and may have some gum on them. Once the oil has a chance to circulate the noises should go away. Make sure all your lights are working. If all seems good, turn the car off and check back under the hood & under the car again for anything amiss like gas which has leaked from the carburetor. If all is good you’re practically home free.

Being in storage for a few months you probably have a layer of dust on your car. Don’t use a dry cloth to wipe it off. The abrasions can dull or scratch your car's paint. Wash it off and use a good wax & cleaner.

Now that everything seems to be fine it’s time to take the car out for a test.

But take it slow. Go a few feet and test the brakes. Test all the gears again.

Take the car for a short ride and again listen to it and feel how it drives. If all seems good, you are on your way to having a great summer in your classic.

Above all please remember to be safe.

Mel Brooks Few in Show Business have had the impact that Mel Brooks has had on comedy. From directing to producing to acting he has brought laughter to generations with a style all his own.

You would be hard pressed to pick a favorite from the likes of greats such as Young Frankenstein, Silent Movie, The History Of The World Part I, The Producers and Blazing Saddles to name just a few of the talents he brought to the screen. Surrounded with so many greats who were part of his movies like Gene Wilder, Dom Deluise, Cleavon Little, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Teri Garr, Madeline Kahn, Bernadette Peters, Sid Caesar, Harvey Korman and John Candy his works are sure to be enjoyed by so many more generations still to come.

So where does a comedic talent come from. Well in Mel Brooks’ case its New York. Mel was born in New York City back in 1926. And just nine years later he already knew he would be in show business after seeing the play Anything Goes one day with his Uncle Joe. At just 14 Mel began his career as a comedic entertainer at a pool. Having been taught drums by the best in the business, Buddy Rich, Mel also soon got employment as a drummer. It was as a drummer that he got his real first experience as a comic when the MC of the show he was a drummer for got sick leaving Mel to take his place.

In 1944 Mel graduated from High School and was drafted into the army that same year.

He served as a corporal in the 1104th Engineer Combat Battalion, 78th Infantry Division, was in the Battle of The Bulge and advanced into Germany. With the war at an end, Mel organized shows to entertain American troops as well as captured German soldiers.

After his tour of duty Mel returned back to New York where he quickly found work as a drummer, pianist and comic. Soon thereafter he began writing comedy for television thanks to an invite from his friend Cid Caesar. In the 1950’s with another invite from Caesar, Mel began writing with Neil Simon and Carl Reiner for the hit show entitled Show of Shows. In the 60’s Mel and Carl came to Hollywood performing their routines on The Steve Allen Show. Soon Mel was creating works for Broadway as well as TV. You may remember the hit show Get Smart starring Don Adams. Well that was just one of Mel Brook’s early creations.

And so Mel’s incredible career grew seeing success after success in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s right up to today not only as a writer but also a director, producer, actor and even composer. The name Mel Brooks was Hollywood Gold and joy to the millions of fans around the world who would see his works. Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert had even referred to Mel Brooks and Woody Allen as "the two most successful comedy directors in the world today ... America's two funniest filmmakers". Now turning 96 there’s still no slowing down this incredible entertainer who knew so many years ago that this was the line of work he was meant to do. Happy Birthday Mel and thanks for all the joy and laughs you have given us all over the years! See you in the movies!

Father Knows Best

On October 3rd, 1954 at 10pm families across America tuned their TVs to CBS to watch what would become one of America’s favorite television sitcoms, Father Knows Best.

The show was about a family, the Andersons, and their day to day lives. The Andersons were seen to be a typical American family living more than likely in the Midwest in a town called Springfield. The family consisted of James "Jim" Anderson Sr. played by Hollywood legend Robert Young. Margaret Anderson was played by another Hollywood legend, Jane Wyatt. Betty "Princess" Anderson was played by Elinor Donahue who you may also remember from so many other shows like The Andy Griffith Show where she played Ellie, Andy’s girl friend. James "Bud" Anderson Jr. was played by Billy Gray. Billy continued to be in many movies and tv series like Rawhide and Peter Gunn and even became a motorcycle racer. Lastly, Kathy "Kitten" Anderson was played by Lauren Chapin. Lauren went on to write an adaptation of Father Knows Best that she performs in. She also became a minister and manages other actors and singers.

Although the show aired in 1954 it had its roots a few years earlier being a radio show also starring Robert Young and then a TV pilot created by Young called Keep It In The Family. Robert Young was the only star to be in all three versions. The show went back and forth between CBS and NBC producing a total of 203 episodes until Sept 1960. With a following of millions of TV viewers Father Knows Best then immediately began airing as reruns to which you may still find them in your area today. In later years two reunion movies were even made with the Anderson kids grown up.

If the house the Andersons lived in looked pretty familiar to you… you’d be right. The front of the house was also the home of George Wilson in Dennis The Menace as well as the house Jeannie and Anthony Nelson lived in on I Dream of Jeannie. You also saw it on Bewitched, Hazel, The Monkees, Blondie and even the Partridge Family.

As was the theme of so many shows of the era, each episode besides having its air of comedy also gave a moral message reflecting the interests of families of the time and the values in the decisions they made. Father Knows Best was truly a diamond in American TV with a popularity that crosses decades. Thank you Elinor, Billy and Lauren for bringing us such a great show with Robert and Jane! And Happy Father’s Day to all!!

A Moment In History FLAG DAY AND NATIONAL FLAG WEEK, 2015

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION For more than 200 years, the American flag has been a proud symbol of the people of our Nation and the values for which we stand. In hues of red, white, and blue, it reflects centuries of struggle and sacrifice -- a constant reminder of our journey from 13 colonies to a Nation united in freedom and liberty, and of the patriots and pioneers who fought for these ideals at home and abroad. On Flag Day and during National Flag Week, we pay tribute to this banner of hope and opportunity, and we celebrate the story of progress it represents.

With broad stripes and bright stars, our flag has connected Americans across our country, around the globe, and throughout the chapters of our history. In a new world, it stood as a beacon of promise and possibility; in the dawn’s early light, it offered a glimmer of hope as the fate of our young Nation was decided; and after a civil war that divided our Union, the Star Spangled Banner once again united our people. As courageous women and men marched and protested to broaden our democracy’s reach and secure their civil rights, they carried the American flag, understanding the enormous potential it embodied -- even as the Nation it represented denied them their fundamental rights. Today, it is because of an unbroken chain of heroes, who have served in our Armed Forces and worn the flag they defend, that Old Glory still waves over the land of the free and the home of the brave.

From storefronts and homes, atop monuments, and over the institutions that sustain our Nation at home and abroad, the American flag stands watch as we strive to perfect our Union. As we place our hand over our heart or as we salute this symbol of the country we love, let us pause to reflect on the legacy of our Nation and embrace the common threads that bind us together as Americans.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2015, as Flag Day and the week beginning June 14, 2015, as National Flag Week. I direct the appropriate officials to display the flag on all Federal Government buildings during that week, and I urge all Americans to observe Flag Day and National Flag Week by displaying the flag. I also call upon the people of the United States to observe with pride and all due ceremony those days from Flag Day through Independence Day, also set aside by the Congress (89 Stat. 211), as a time to honor America, to celebrate our heritage in public gatherings and activities, and to publicly recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.

Flag Day 2022: Tues, June 14th

On Feb 12, 1908 six cars from competing countries took to the starting line in Time Square to begin the Great New York to Paris Car Race of 1908. After crossing the length of The United States the contestants and their cars would take to ship to cross the Pacific Ocean. Once back to shore each team made their way through Asia and Europe to finally finish in Paris. With many dangers & hazards endured through the race only 3 of the 6 teams finished. Montague Roberts of the American Team won the race in their 1907 Thomas Flyer making it to Paris on July 30, 1908. Montague and his team covered 10,377 miles in their Thomas Flyer. It was equipped with 2 shovels, 2 picks, 2 lanterns, 8 search lights, 2 extra gas tanks 500 ft of rope, a rifle and revolvers.... a little different than today's standard features.

This June 19th The Great American Road Race will make a stop in Binghamton with festivities and cruise-ins thru the weekend to welcome them in. Come

There's a lot of great memories that we all have from different life experiences. It doesn't take much to recall special moments in our lives. Kicking off their summer concert series the Madrona Tasting Room was the scene for great music, food and drinks along with some great vendors showing off their wares. Guests, patrons, friends & those soon to be, showed up from all over coming by car, motorcycle, on foot, and even by horse to enjoy the fun. This truly is just a great location and venue with an incredible view outdoors complimented by a fantastic modern cabin style Tasting Room hosting a variety of top rated wine, beer and spirits made right here in New York along with a very unique gift shop of local vendors. A Little Summer Trivia 1. Did you know June is named after the Roman Goddess Juno, July for Julius Caesar and August for Julius Caesar's nephew, Augustus.

2. Frisbees were first invented in the 1870's as a pie plate...but in the 1940's college students began throw ing them around turning this simple round disk into a fun activity craze that has lasted decades.

3. Ice Pops (popsicle) were invented by an eleven year old boy in 1905.

4. The Eiffel Tower actually grows 6 inches in the summer due to the iron expanding.

5. The Guinness Book of Records for The longest barbecue event was 80 hours in 2014 in Georgia for charity. They cooked 1000 hotdogs, 558 burgers, 104 pieces of chicken 200 pieces of corn, and 526 sausages. I wonder if we could break that record here for a good cause.
