Where are they now? ~ Joe Nemia

Growing up in any generation or year is an amazing time for kids. Our parents and those before them worked hard and sacrificed to give their kids a good life.

The times may change but not the story.

From pretty much any generation you will hear tales of how great it was growing up.

And they’re all good stories of friendship and family life. Here is one such story of a young man who grew up on the west side of Binghamton, Joe Nemia.

I was born in Binghamton at Lourdes hospital many moons ago as we know, and grew up on the West side, mostly on Leroy Street during school. My dad owned a heating & AC business till I was about 6 then worked mostly in the business in one capacity or another mainly sales. Mom after being a homemaker/mom, went to work at EJ’s for years when I was in elementary school. I’m the youngest with 3 older sisters. Mirella Fernandez the eldest still lives in Binghamton. Joanne Nemia, the second eldest lives in Lake Placid, NY. And lastly there’s Mary Hogarth who resides now in New Jersey.

My fondest memories of growing up were with familia, like the times spent on Lake Ontario/Niagara Falls with my maternal aunt, uncle & cousins, and in Greene with my fraternal aunts, uncles, cousins & grandparents, as well as spending about 6 months in Italy as a child with aunts, uncles, cousins & maternal grandparents. It was really a great time growing up.

I really liked fishing in the rivers & lakes around the area at a young age. Then in my teen years I got into weight training after my mother took me to see the 1st Rocky movie, that motivated me tremendously. Being quite heavy as a child as many knew me, this helped me in achieving many goals physically and mentally.

I went to Binghamton Central and if my memory serves me the last graduating class of the Bulldogs. Many great times there for sure like high school partying with my great friends…. and after all these years most still remain as great friends.

Even now I sit back and wonder how we made it thru those 3 or 4 years of HS?!

I played Football in Jr. & Sr. High as offensive/defensive tackle although being overweight and quite slow didn’t do so well, but then again neither did our team as our record showed . Still it was a good experience in team sports and I’m glad I had the opportunity. I also tried my hand at shotput in track in 9th grade. As far as working in my school years, my first job was at 14. I was a YMCA camp counselor.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t too much of a studious student in school but I did make a lot of great friends & lifelong experiences & memories in there. I had great teachers, one of which, Mr. Dan Haggerty, I was fortunate enough to reconnect with prior to his passing several years ago. Dan was mine and many others wood shop teacher at West Jr. We all really loved him and his class. We connected on Facebook many years later and I found that he spent winters here in Delray Beach, not far from my home. My sister Mary was his first ever female student that took his class. Mary just loved Mr. Haggerty & vice versa so when she came down for my eldest daughter’s HS graduation, I arranged a “surprise” lunch meeting that

was to say the least, most memorable for them both!

After HS I graduated from BCC with a marketing & management degree but unfortunately did not further my education & moved to the Tampa area for a year. Employment opportunities back then were few & far between with all of the industry moving out of the area. I didn’t do any sports after HS but I did actively continue weight training for quite some time even years after I moved to So Florida. Injuries & life in general had me stop about 20 or more years ago but during Covid in 2020 I started back again and try to get in the gym 3 or 4 times a week currently. My goal now is simply going, then depending on how the “old” joints feel, is the deciding factor how long I’ll last.

As for what I do now, I’m still living in South Florida where I’ve spent the last 32 years and where my kids were born & grew up. I have worked for the past 31 yrs here in the construction materials manufacturing sector. I’ve worked in all different aspects including research & development to now the Palm Beach County Territory Manager for Westlake-Royal Roofing products. It’s provided a good living for me although quite challenging at times. In my spare time besides weight training I still do quite a bit of Bass fishing on the weekends at a friend’s lake house in Lake Placid, Florida. I also collect guitars & play when I have the time.

Most importantly, I have 2 wonderful daughters; Gianna Nemia who is 20 yrs old and in her last semester at FSU. She’s on the Dean’s list-so proud of her! My second daughter is Martina Nemia who is 16 yrs old and in her sophomore year at Palm Beach Central High. She’s on the honor roll every semester and is following in her dad’s footsteps working out 6 days a week! They’re both the Apples of my eyes. When they were younger we traditionally used to go on cruises together to make memories. Now they are independent living their own lives as we did.

Truthfully, I tell my 2 daughters quite frequently how growing up in Binghamton was such a wonderful tight knit small city and in hindsight wouldn’t have wanted to grow up anywhere else. I do miss the triple cities and make it back to see friends and family as often as I can. There’s so many things I love about the area. The warm, kind people there and spiedies of course!! The food in general. Diversity of all ethnic backgrounds. How safe it was. Fishing. And even the beauty in the fall! But on the contrary, I’ll take one snowfall, but then I’m out! Not too much a fan of the cold.

Hopefully I will be back up to Binghamton later this year for our High School 40th reunion. That has to be a mistake….

40 years???? I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone and sharing stories about old and new times. All my best to everyone up there! ~ Your friend, Joe Nemia

Your Neighbor Betty Kocak Hidock

Betty Kocak Hidock was born in Binghamton.

As many did back in earlier days her parents worked for shoe companies here in the Triple Cities. He father, Joe, worked for Dunn & McCarthy’s, and her mother, Elizabeth, at the Victory Building for Endicott Johnson. As are many of the stories you hear of old, Betty’s Childhood was a good one with lots of memories of family and friends, celebrations and holidays. This young girl though also had a path all her own that you don’t hear every day.

Betty admittedly was surely a Tom Boy growing up. She loved to play baseball with the neighborhood boys in the school yard. Growing up, baseball was part of her life. Her dad was also an umpire in the Binghamton Chapter of the New York State Baseball Umpires Association. In fact both her father, and uncle Ignatius were umpires. They often went by the nicknames of Wazzo, or Little Waz and Big Waz. Betty would always follow her dad to all his ball games. And at their cottage in Windsor, her Dad would often bring out the baseball gear, and practice hitting grounders and highballs for Betty to catch.

Besides baseball Betty also liked to run and bowl. Her dad was a bowler and taught her some of the techniques of the game. Betty enjoyed the game so much she got into the Junior Bowling League. As she started High School at Binghamton Central, sports were still a big part of her life. She continued bowling for Central as well as playing volleyball, softball, track and even joined the cheerleading squad. Her talent for sports did not go unnoticed receiving numerous awards and some recognition a little less known having hit a ball from the old baseball field at Central, past the length of the field, across

Front Street and breaking the window of a house on the other side. A great hit for sure, but probably not appreciated as much by the home owners as the players who saw the hit.

After High School Betty wanted to be a gym teacher but got into an accident which put her in the hospital for some time. As fate would have it, once she got out of the hospital she went to a softball tournament with her dad sitting behind home plate. On one particular pitch the catcher missed the ball so her father in fun shouted out “Hey poopsie, get some glasses.” The catcher, Joe, turned and saw Betty with her father and replied “Hey there’s quiet laws.” After the game the catcher went to talk with them, and asked Betty on a date. Betty answered no. But after many attempts over the next few days she finally said yes. The two of them hit it off and two years later in 1961…they married.

In 1963 Betty got back into bowling and softball joining leagues in both. Recognition for her talent in sports soon again gained attention being noted as a Press All Star for Bowling. Betty had always liked the idea of being an umpire herself and with the continual encouragement to do so by other umpires like Andy Grecko, Betty made up her mind to be the first woman umpire in the area. For 12 weeks she went to the Binghamton Chapter of the NYS Baseball Umpires Association classes and passed the test. She had made it! For the first time ever Binghamton would see a female umpire take the field. This was really a dream come true for Betty that she would live out from 1975 to 78 until sadly another car accident forced her to give it up.

Sports though it would seem would never leave Betty, and shortly thereafter she began coaching the boys and girls bowling team at Seton and then Central. Her love for sports which she shared with her dad had come full circle. As a young girl she loved sports and watching her dad umpire which drew her to playing on several teams, umpiring and then coaching to teach others the love for the game, sharing her knowledge and experience. And as tradition may have foretold, the love her father, husband and her had for sports found a new home with Betty’s son, Joseph “Joey” Hidock III, who is himself a very successful PGA Class A Professional Golf Instructor in Florida and ranked one of the best by Golf Digest.

Betty you have truly had an impact on sports in the area and we are very proud to have shared a bit of your story. Thank you for being another reason why this is such a great place to live!

Born in Sweden, Ann-Margret came to the United States when she was just five years old and soon found her way into the hearts of everyone as the all American girl who could sing, dance and act with the best of them on stage and screen. When Ann-Margret first arrived in the States her father took the family to Radio City Music Hall. That just might have been the spark that started her dreams in entertainment. They settled in Illinois where she soon started dance lessons which came very naturally to her. Throughout her teens she performed on tv & radio. Shortly after college she began performing with a group called the Suttletones at a night club in Chicago which brought her to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Reno and finally back to Las Vegas where her group got a spot at The Dunes. It was here that George Burns heard of her and gave her the break she needed dancing with him in his Holiday Show.

Recognizing her talent RCA Victor was soon to sign her to a record deal. 20th Century Fox also signed her for a seven year contract where she made 15 movies from 1961-67 like Pocketful of Miracles with Glenn Ford & Betty Davis, State Fair with Pat Boone & Bobby Darin, Bye Bye Birdie with Dick Van Dyke & Janet Leigh and of course Viva Las Vegas with Elvis Presley. Ann-Margret was a hit. Whether she was on stage or screen audiences loved her. Throughout the 60’s to today she has made dozens more films like The Train Robbers with John Wayne and Grumpier Old Men with Jack Lemon & Walter Matthau, and countless tv shows, stage productions and recordings. And to our Veterans she is a star in so many ways having performed with the USO here in the states and overseas for our troops in Vietnam and other locations in South-East Asia with other icons like Bob Hope.

As her Star on Hollywood Boulevard exhibits, Ann-Margret is truly a star. With awards and nominations to numerous to list including Golden Globes, Golden Laurels, Grammys and Oscars, Ann-Margret has been recognized by fans and peers alike for her incredible talent.

As Barbara Stanwyck once shared at the podium at the Emmys about Ann-Margret, "I would like to pay a personal tribute at this time to a lady who is a wonderful entertainer... I think she gave one of the finest, most beautiful performances I have ever seen...Ann-Margret, you were superb.” A statement from the heart that could also be said about Ann-Margret’s life in entirety.

Thank you Ann-Margret for all you have and continue to share with us. See you in the movies!

Forks XV "The Forks XV is one of the premier road races around held in Chenango Forks over a challenging 15 Kilometers. The first race was held in 1973 and has been popular amongst runners of all levels. Since its beginnings, the Forks XV has attracted runners from all over. Each year you'll find school kids who run track and cross country on up to seniors who are everyday still hitting the pavement.

Some of the best running talent in the state and country have competed here with past names such as Patrick Maher, Gary Wallace, Chip Boehm, James Knight, Peter Pfitzinger, Dan Mullins, Sue Girard, Chuck Ellis and our own local running legend Tom Carter who set the course record in 1982 running the 15 kilometers in 46:15. That's a pace of 4:58 per mile.

Today in proud tradition the race is still going on celebrating its 49th Anniversary this past March 27th .

The runners hit the course in somewhat cold weather as you might expect for the area, but it didn't affect their spirits or determination as they all came out of the start hitting their own stop watches in hopes of tracking their personal bests.

This year the race was won by John Salva in a time of 51:49, followed by Jordan Varano in 54:37, Alex Craver in 56:44 and Sarah Briggs who also won the ladies division in 57:01. Just an amazing job by all the runners and The Triple Cities Runners Club!

See you next year for the 50th Anniversary of the Forks XV where this runner of years gone by hopes to also enter. Best wishes to all for a great road race season! ~ John Vallone

"The purpose of the TCRC is to promote and support all avenues of running in our local area, and be a driving force in helping our running community to be united, strong, and continue to grow.

We welcome runners of ALL abilities, whether you are a competitive racer, run for fitness, seasoned veteran, or just beginning; we are here to support everyone. As a member of TCRC, you will be part of that community, help support the club's efforts, and enjoy the camaraderie of other club members and local runners at group runs, workouts, races, special events, and more!

As a club, we are honored to play a role in improving our community. Previous years saw classic races and new runs. Our members got together to run at group runs, drink at social events, and support each other on their running journeys, no matter where those journeys took them. Our club also used funds to give out High School scholarships, shoes to youth runners with financial need, as well as money to assist other local clubs and organizations in the area. We also gave back to the community through volunteer opportunities at races and other events!

So come be a part of the fun!

I like to make this appetizer for my friends and family. It’s always a bit hit with football and baseball fans. I usually make it for special events, like the World Series games or the Super Bowl! ~Kayla Schlottman

Kayla's Chicken Wing Dip ~Ingredients~ - 3 Chicken Breasts - 1 Block of Cream Cheese - Blue Cheese Crumbles - 2 Cups Ranch Dressing

- 1/2 Bag of mild Cheddar Cheese Shredded - 1/2 Bottle of Buffalo Sauce

~Directions~

- Take Chicken Breasts and Boil and Shred.

- Add all ingredients in any order to a small crockpot. Turn on high.

- Let melt stirring now and then to help mix .

- Serve with any chips you'd like!

- Enjoy the game
