Sarah Jane Root

Bringing in the New Year we’re happy to introduce you to Sarah Jane Root. Now if you’ve been to Tioga Down’s you have probably met Sarah Jane.

She’s been a cocktail server there since the day they opened. And, as with all the people who work in the service industry to help make our days a little brighter, there's a lot more to the person than sometimes we get to see. So here’s a little bit about our friend, Sarah Jane.....

“Growing up in both Waverly and Smithboro I loved spending my free time at my grandparents house, and playing field hockey in the yard with my Dad. One of my fondest memories was visiting Waneta Lake. My dad would take us kids there on the weekends with my grandparents. We would go out on the boat and have fun tubing. I went to Waverly High School but I didn’t graduate there. I ended up finishing my GED and going to Keystone College for a couple of semesters.

My first job was a bus girl at Mangialardo’s Restaurant in Sayre. When I heard a casino was opening up in the area I was excited. It was something new and different especially for this area. I had no experience waitressing anywhere but thought cocktailing would be a fun job. I have a lot of fun talking with the guests and have really gotten to know a lot of them. We joke and ask about each other’s family. It’s hard to believe I've been there 15 years already. I’ll never forget opening day. What a rush!! There's so many things I like about working there. Every day is different. You're always meeting new people. And the people I work with are just like family. It’s my second home."

"When I am not at work I love baking and listening to music. I have 3 children which make me incredibly happy; Jack who is nine now and my twins Gracie and Abigail who are seven. They are my whole world. Our favorite thing to do together is listen to our favorite songs and dance together, usually in the kitchen. We take turns having Alexa play whatever we want. We always end up laughing hysterically."

"There really are a lot of good things about growing up in a small town that I carried from my youth to today. One of which is life seems to slow down just a bit to give you time to enjoy the important things, like the time you spend with family and friends. I love this area and am so glad I grew up here. There are so many old memories with my family that are dear to my heart and I am glad now to be making new memories with my kids just spending time together as a family and going to places like the Cider Mill, Apple picking, and having fun in the corn maze. Each day is a blessing and I am glad for all of my yesterdays, todays and tomorrows."

Happy 100th Birthday Julie Dyno

Julie Dyno was born on Dec 18, 1921 at Wilson Hospital in Binghamton and moved to Johnson City in 1924 after her parents built the house she still lives in on the North Side. Growing up she had two sisters; Anna and Mary, and one brother; John. Her father, William Myshak worked in the PA coal mines for a time and then for over 30 years at EJ’s mainly in the tannery, Victory Factory (Julie went to see him at the factory in those days). Her mother; Tekla, before becoming a full-time housewife, worked in a cigar factory in Binghamton. They both immigrated to America from Ukraine. They actually lived just over the hill from each other in Ukraine but never met until they came to America. For a short time, her mother worked as a maid in New York City before moving to Binghamton. Her mother never spoke English, but her father went to school to learn English. She is very proud of the fact that her father was a founding father of St. Mary’s (now Dormitions of the Virgin Mary) Russian Orthodox Church on Baxter St. Julie was the youngest of her siblings. She was a “tomboy”. She liked playing ball, hiking in the woods and swimming. Things were a little different back then. On the North side of JC where she grew up, there were only 2 houses where she lived, until the EJ’s homes were built. There were pastures and a large apple orchard. Her mother grew potatoes in the field across the street. At harvest time, Julie loved it when they built a fire outside and baked potatoes until they were nice and done. “They tasted so good.”

There was a huge bull in the pasture, she learned to stay away from him. They also had rabbits, geese, and chickens. Her mother had a large garden with flowers and vegetables. So much of what they ate they grew.

Julie remembers the first time she tried pizza was in a restaurant that was where the Harry L School was. The pizza didn’t look good to her. It was the old

fashioned “Hot Pie” with cheese and cut tomatoes. With much coaxing, she tried it and loved it. It was very different from the ethnic Russian food she was used to eating. As a kid, Christmas was especially wonderful. Her father would set up a small manger with real straw every year in the living room. They were happy with a stocking filled with fruit and attending church services and all the special foods prepared for Orthodox Christmas.

Julie went to the JC High School on Main St. She loved art and to draw and enjoyed going to the school games and dances. Her sister (10 years Julie's senior) was a "flapper" and loved to dance the Charleston! There is so much to tell about living back then that it would take a book. Just listening to all the old radio shows was fun. Her brother even had the first television on their street. Neighbors back then worked together and if anyone needed work done, they helped one another.

She enjoyed shopping on Main Street in JC, and recalls several dress shops. In those days, ladies dressed up and wore high heels to go shopping.

Julie met her first husband Joseph Reposh through relatives. He lived in Richmondale, PA. Joe told his mother one day when Julie was doing acrobats in his yard that he was going to marry her. And so he did. Her father hired gypsies to play the music at their wedding. Their wedding took place a St. Mary’s and the reception was at their family home. Then one day while at the movies with Joe, they announced the attack on Pearl Harbor. Like many in the community Joe had enlisted in the service. He was stationed in Texas so Julie twice drove by herself from JC to Texas to see him. There was never an issue picking up hitchhiking soldiers back in the day so sometimes she had company for part of the trip. During the war Julie had moved to Texas to be with Joe. She also, worked in the PX while Joe was stationed there. While overseas Joe was a B17 gunner over Germany.

After the war, they lived in Texas until 1949 when Joe succumbed to cancer at age 33. Heartbroken Julie moved back home to Johnson City with their 2-yearold son (Ron). That was a rough time being so young and with a son back in those days. Years following, she married Louis Dyno who had always loved her and waited for her to come home after Joe passed. They had a second son, Thomas. Tom and Ron are 10 years apart and were both actors in local stage plays.

Today Julie likes to eat out, spending time with family, and watching television to which her current favorites are Wagon Train, Mannix, Barney Miller, Mountain Men, and General Hospital. She has also been an avid novel reader all her life belonging to a few book clubs. She loved going to JC’s “Your Hometown Library”. Back in the day she also enjoyed going to dances at the JC Pavilion and saw many Big Bands during that era. It really has been an amazing place to live over the years!

Thank you Julie for sharing a bit of your story with us. With all the things you have seen over the years we wish you would take your love for books and write your own, sharing your memories of growing up and your experiences over the last 100 years. God Bless and here’s wishing you a Very Happy Birthday!!

Gatherings

at the Gazebo Christmas Caroling has always held a warm, nostalgic memory when thinking of our Christmas traditions. Although in earlier years you may have been more likely to see carolers going door to door down snow covered neighborhoods, the tradition is still alive today. Not just in our hearts and on tv but in a spirit expressed in so many across the country as they dress for the winter cold to bring cheer to others with songs of the holiday. Keeping the tradition close, just before Christmas the Johnson City Neighborhood Project and the JC Rotary teamed up with Girl Scout Troop 30599 and the band Treasure to do some caroling at the Gazebo on Main Street, JC. There’s something about hearing Christmas music in the air that can brighten even the Scroogiest of passerbyers. And to make the festivities even nicer, our Girl Scouts were handing out free candy to all those who came on by. With this JC event so appropriately named “Gatherings At The Gazebo”, these holiday get togethers filled with song have a long tradition in our communities and our country going back hundreds of years.

We can all be thankful that these traditions are still celebrated, and maybe, just maybe, next year we might see a rekindling of the Door to Door Caroling of old to warm our hearts and spread good cheer.

e all do it. We make those New Year's Resolutions that we're sure to follow through on....well, at least we hope to. Some of us pledge to lose weight and get in shape. And still others of us make an oath to just be nicer. In fact a lot of us share the same resolutions so you're probably not going to be too surprised to learn what the top 10 are according to a data group called "Statista": 1. Exercise More 2. Eat Healthier 3. Spend More Time With Family & Friends 4. Lose Weight 5. Live More Economically 6. Spend Less Time On Social Media 7. Improve My Performance On The Job 8. Reduce Stress On The Job 9.

Quit Smoking 10. Cut Down On Alcohol.

Now of course once we make our resolution the trouble is always keeping them and not letting them get forgotten. But thinking of and even picking something that is truly important to you might not be an easy thing to do. For me, I think one of the best goals we can ever give ourselves for every New Year was in a speech that Matthew McConaughey shared on stage at the Oscars ~ "Now when I was 15 years old, I had a very important person in my life come to me and say “who’s your hero?....," I thought about it. "You know who it is? It’s me in 10 years.” So I turned 25. Ten years later, that same person comes to me and says, “So, are you a hero?” And I was like, “not even close. No, no, no.” She said, “Why?” I said, “Because my hero’s me at 35.” So you see every day, every week, every month and every year of my life, my hero’s always 10 years away. I’m never gonna be my hero. I’m not gonna attain that. I know I’m not, and that’s just fine with me because that keeps me with somebody to keep on chasing."

Endicott's Holiday Parade

For generations children of all ages have lined the streets of Endicott to watch the Holiday Parade. This year was sure to please with bands playing familiar Holiday scores while kids caught glimpses of some of their favorite characters. There's just something about parades that bring all in attendance closer together.

And for that we are grateful.

Betty White One hundred years ago a bright star by the name of Betty White came to be, and soon she would come into all our lives on radio, Tv and the big screen. In a career that spanned decades we all came to love her for her comedic talents and a genuine charming personality that shown thru in all she did..

Betty was born in Oak Park, Illinois but her family would soon move to California during the depression. She loved the outdoors so much that her first inclination for a career was to be a forest ranger. Fate however may have lent a hand to her being in entertainment a few times in her early years. At just eight she was a caller on a radio show and she would soon discover how much she loved writing and acting. She even wrote and starred in her school’s graduation play. Later she found work modeling, acting and even singing on television programs. But then World War II broke out and Betty was determined to do her part, enlisting in the American Women’s Voluntary Services.

After the war Betty found work in radio for about $5 a show but soon she was offered her own show “The Betty White Show” which led to v spots including hosting a Hollywood Tv Variety show with an Emmy nomination to follow. From here Betty’s career and ventures sky rocketed. She founded her own production company, created and starred in many shows and even did commercials and countless guest appearances. Betty had indeed become a household name before her 30th birthday.

Her career continued on through the decades and into the new century with of course her show, The Betty White Show and many more to follow like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Mama’s Family and The Golden Girls which ran till 1992. And who could forget her appearances on so many game shows like What’s My Line, To Tell The truth, Match Game, Pyramid, and of course Password where she fell in love with and married the host of the show Allen Ludden. In 2009 we even got to enjoy her role as the loveable grandmother in the movie The Proposal with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.

There’s really no limit to the number of Tv shows, movies, appearances, and awards that we could list highlighting the incredible career of this Midwest born girl who found her way into America’s living rooms and hearts. She was often referred to as The First Lady of Television and is actually in the Guinness Book of records for having worked longer in television than anyone else. Betty will be sadly missed by so many. But yet she still will take center stage soon to be with us all again in a documentary style movie about her life that is soon to be released with so many of her friends lending stories about this incredible woman.

After Betty’s husband Allen passed away, Betty said she would never remarry. The love her and Allen had for each other was one we all hope to have. In sharing this sentiment she was once asked on “Inside The Actor's Studio that should Heaven exist, what would she like God to say to her when she walked through the Pearly gates, White replied "Come on in Betty. Here's Allen." Amazingly, the last word Betty spoke before passing was…. “Allen”. Good Bye Betty, and thank you for everything.

This December Recreation Park once again hosted its Holiday Winter Festival over the weekends bringing out hay rides and horse drawn wagons for all to enjoy.

It truly is a spectacular image at night with a light snow coming down to see two horses pulling a wagon along the paths of a park that date back to the 20's. And of course Santa was on hand with his elves to add to the festivities with a scent of hot cocoa in the air and Christmas music performed by the All Saint Choir and Rick Pedro on the piano. A favorite for all to enjoy was the nightly opening of the Carousel with its familiar songs played as riders passed in and out of view. A refrigerated ice rink was also a new addition to the park sharing the winter festivals opening day. ~A big thanks to all who put in the time and came out to make this holiday tradition at Recreation Park possible again this year!

Happy New Year Broome County!!

We've Got Talent Broome County has long been home to many talented persons in music from performers to conductors to writers and teachers, to which we are very proud to bring you a story about one such incredible person, Paul Cienniwa, our Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra’s Executive Director.

Paul was born just outside of Chicago. "My Father was a truck driver and my mother was a postal worker. They were not really involved in music, although my mother continues to play piano today. Growing up I really enjoyed making music. I started taking piano lessons when I was six (mother’s influence). My brother had started two years before me, when he was six. We were lucky that our piano teacher lived across the street. As a child of the ‘80’s, I grew up listening to a lot of new wave music. Eventually, I started listening to punk, but came to realize by the time I was 16, that the real rebellion was in classical music. As a teenager with a newly minted license, I used to drive recklessly while listening to Wagner."

"Around 7th grade, I started playing trumpet and then transitioned into French horn.

All that time, I was playing piano. Also, in high school, I joined the Metropolitan Youth Symphony in Chicago—my first real exposure to being inside of an orchestra.

I remember I was once playing a Mozart concerto with the Symphony and had only memorized the piece the night before.... I guess I used to live dangerously."

"After high school I attended the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, majoring in piano. I had moved over to DePaul University where, by then, I was majoring in harpsichord performance. That degree and my interest led me to Yale for my master’s and doctorate. One reason I wanted to go to Yale was so that I could focus on my solo playing. And Yale also presented me with an opportunity to play on actual antiques."

Music has brought Paul to quite a few destinations from Boston, Massachusetts to Palm Beach, Florida as an Organist, Director, Choirmaster, Harpsichordist, Chorus Master, Recording Artist and Teacher. As fate would have it, it was at UMass-Dartmouth where he met his wife Jacqueline Maillet. Fortunately for us their journey has brought Paul and Jacqueline to Binghamton where he is now the Executive Director of the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra. He's also the organist at our Christ Episcopal Church in Binghamton!

“My wife and I moved to Binghamton after three years in Delray Beach, FL. We were looking to move back north and Binghamton came calling. We love it here, from the quiet neighborhoods to the beautiful surroundings. The quality of living is really great.

I’ve lived in many places, and Binghamton is an extremely easy and lovely place to live."

“As the Executive Director I oversee all aspects of running an orchestra, from fundraising to artistic development to audience building. It’s quite a bit to take on. I love that I am able to shift focus throughout every day. One minute, I’m meeting with audience members, and another, I’m creating events for the next concert season. It’s a real mixed bag of things to do, but they are all enjoyable."

The many accomplishments that Paul brings with him to our community from performing to conducting, directing, teaching and even recording are truly astounding. We hope you may have the opportunity to learn more about Paul at www.paulcienniwa.com. Celebrating the Legacy of Fritz and Marianne Wallenberg

by Dr. Paul Cienniwa, Executive Director, Binghamton Philharmonic ~A project to preserve Binghamton history led to some interesting personal connections for the author.

In the summer of 2020, the Binghamton Philharmonic was given twenty years of recordings of performances conducted by Fritz Wallenberg, the founder of the orchestra that became today’s Philharmonic. The recordings, made by Marvin Fred Kelley, Jr. of Custom Recording Studio in Binghamton, date from a Christmas concert on December 14, 1958 and carry through 1978. The vast majority of the performances are of Wallenberg’s Community Symphony Society and its later incarnation, the Binghamton Symphony and Choral Society.

After receiving the reels, the Philharmonic embarked on a fundraising campaign to digitize the recordings for open access on YouTube. What I didn’t expect was the personal connections that came from the project’s supporters. Over the course of a year, I heard from former orchestra members, including violinist Ed Pettengill and clarinetist Vincent Smith, and from ‘cellist David Heiss, a former student of Fritz Wallenberg who now plays with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. I also took calls from children of parents who had played or sung with the orchestra, and I had the great pleasure of getting to know Fritz and Marianne Wallenberg’s children: James and Katherine (Rabinowitz).

Perhaps the most unusual connection came when I was looking over some of the old concert programs and noticed the last name of the former owner of the house my wife and I had recently purchased. The owner’s daughter had played with the orchestra! When I told my neighbor, he decided to pay for two of the digital transfers, presenting the recordings to the former owner. This was no coincidence, though. Rather, it was simply more evidence of how the legacy of Fritz and Marianne Wallenberg continues to reach into nearly every corner of our community. ~On Wed, Jan 26, the Binghamton Philharmonic & AudioClassics will present the best of these historic recordings at a benefit at the Kilmer Mansion. Tickets are $10-$20 and include a reception. This event is part of the Wallenberg Festival, a special concert on Sat, Jan 29, featuring the Binghamton Community Orchestra, Binghamton Youth Symphony, and Binghamton Philharmonic. Tickets start at $18 (children/students half price).

Have a great New Year All!!

This past November we brought you a story about Ray Russell and all the great work he and his friends are doing with “Play It Forward” donating guitars and other instruments to those with special needs, charity and people who could use a pick me up. Here’s a quick look back at a bit of that story: "There is NO BETTER FEELING than giving somebody the tools to make their own music and there is no better gift than the gift of music.

We have given guitars as Fundraiser for Every Dogs Dream, Autism awareness, juvenile diabetes, and even to Seton Catholic School to help with the cost of a trip the Vatican. So far we have given over 100 plus guitars away and also drums, horns, shirts and guitar lessons. None of this could be done without the Mushalla Family and the Coal House where it all began, Mike and Jo Whitney, my best friend from high school John Carey, all the local guitar players that make it so very special, and of course all the people who donated guitars and instruments.”

Well as you may already know the instruments are presented at The Waterman's Cafe on 434 in Apalachin at their open Mic night on Thursday's…so we thought it would be nice to bring you a few photos of one of their open Mic nights. And what better time than just before Christmas. On this particular Thursday Waterman’s hosted their Special Holiday Event - Americana Wine Tasting AND Blues in the Barn. With free wine tasting from America Vineyards, plus of course their full menu and plenty of Holiday music to enjoy by Ray and a lot of his friends you had a recipe for a truly great time. Even Santa was on hand to share in the music with a chorus adding a lot of cheer to the festivities. What a great event with a lot of good people in attendance. No surprise though… there’s always something going on at the new Waterman’s so make sure you check out their facebook page to see their events and what else is happening there. You’re sure to have a great time!
