Growing up in this great community you come to know many of the businesses here as much more than a place to shop or the services they offer.

You get to know them as your friends and places and people you are proud of. There really are many great businesses that come to mind from today and yesterday that have helped shape our community.

One such business is Sall-Stearns. Since 1929 Sall-Stearns has been the go to destination for quality men's fashion. It's no surprise from generation to generation that it has also been much more than a great store.... It's been part of a great family tradition where so many fathers have brought their sons in for their first suit. It's an important time in a young man's life just as it is for his parents. For me the story was the same as it was for so many other kids. Walking into the store with your father was a proud moment. A moment made special by your father and the great folks at Sall-Stearns. It wasn't just about getting a perfect suit tailored to your exact size by the best in the business. It was the manner that it was done... with your father, the staff, and owners all giving you their fullest attention and welcoming you into the beginnings of being a young man. How many times this Norman Rockwell moment must have played out at Sall-Stearns over the decades. From that day on you always knew where to go when you wanted to dress for any special occassion or just to make an impression and look your best. We really just can't say enough about the great folks at Sall-Stearns who have been a part of so many families over the years. They really are a wonderful reason why this has been such a great place to live!

Greg Neff

Born and raised in Mount Vernon, Washington it wasn’t too long ago that Greg Neff came to live here in the Southern Tier. You’ve probably already got to hear Greg and his guitar at some of our local establishments like Nips Saloon, South City Publick, Endwell Greens or Carol's in Owego. He’s been bringing his style of folk rock of mostly acoustic 60’s and 70’s tunes to us for some years now. “I feel fortunate to have landed in this area 6 years ago. Musicians here have been very accepting and have helped a “New Guy” find gigs and venues when they didn’t have to. They have invited me to play with them and have introduced me to business owners that would later hire me regularly. I would like to thank them as well as all the incredible venue owners that have taken a chance with me. Of course, it would all be for naught if it wasn’t for my loyal regulars that have yet to tire of coming out to see me. All in all, it’s a good place to be."

Growing up in Washington Greg first got interested in music when he received his first guitar on his 11th birthday. For you nostalgic fans it was a Sears Silvertone. “It came with an instructional record and I learned how to play “Red River Valley” right off. I was hooked. All of my learning was by ear. I was in a band that played at Junior High dances. We never had a name, but I remember kicking around “Intergalactic Bathtub."" It’s no surprise that Greg was drawn to music with personal influences such as The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, and James Taylor, but he had a little more inspiration as his family was very musically inclined as well. “My Dad was a piano player that played in dance bands before I was born. One of my brothers played in a band around our area.

I remember coming home from school and we’d sit in his room playing guitars trying to learn the entire Beatles catalog. I used to play around with drums a bit, but for me it’s hard enough just to try to be decent at one thing."

"I started about 54 years ago. However, there have been many stops and starts.

Life happens. I first decided that I wanted to make music my career when I was in high school. Of course, it didn’t actually happen until I moved into the area 6 years ago. One of my daughters and her family live in Candor and they wanted to go to school. So..... my wife and I moved here to watch the grandkids, and I dove into performing around the area. I feel blessed to have had a regular place to play over the past few months. I find my most memorable performances come when I can get engaged with the audience. More interaction brings about more spontaneity. I never know what will happen, but when an audience

is engaged, I feel more freedom to try things that I wouldn’t normally do. I’ll make songs up on the spot, personalize lyrics, or even just let the audience take over a song. The most memorable performances are the ones that both the audience and I are involved in."

Sometime ago a young man by the name of Michael Kapogiannatos left his home in Greece for America.

Finding his way to Albany he learned the art of baking. So well did Michael learn, that the Red Oak in Binghamton reached out to him in Albany to come on down and work here. And the rest is history. Michael started running the Red Oak almost 40 years ago where he met his other half and partner Julianne Ludka, who was also no stranger to restaurants. You may remember Pancho’s Pit in J.C. Well the great Spaghetti and Meatballs you got there were made by Julianne’s mother, who brought Julianne in to work with her. And so Julianne’s restaurant career started. Perfect for autumnal special days, or any weekday

Cornbread Apple, Sausage and Rosemary Stuffing

2- 14 ounce bags Cornbread Stuffing Cubes (Pepperidge Farm) 1 stick butter - 1 pound sweet sausage, remove the casing 2 medium onions, chopped - 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and cubed 4 ribs celery, chopped and use the leaves for added flavor 4 Tbls fresh Rosemary, chopped - 1 Tbls ground sage 2 Tbls fresh thyme or 1 Tbls dried thyme - 1 box low sodium chicken or turkey broth Salt and Pepper to taste 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. Put stuffing cubes in a large bowl and set aside. Butter an ovenproof baking dish with 2 Tablespoons of the butter.

3. In a large skillet cook the sausage over medium-high heat until no longer pink.

Add to the stuffing cubes. Melt the remaining butter in the same skillet. Add onion, apple, celery and 3/4 teaspoon salt. Cook until veggies and apples are softened, about 5 minutes. Add broth and herbs, bring to a boil.

4. Pour mixture over stuffing/sausage mixture and stir until moistened.

(I like to use my hands to mix everything) 5. Put mixture into baking dish and bake until top begins to get crusty, about 40 minutes. 2 Tablespoons of melted butter can be drizzled over the top and bake another 20 minutes, until top is crisp and golden.

The mixture can be baked to make dressing, or cooked in the bird to make stuffing.

Either way, it's delicious.

For decades the name Dick Van Dyke has been synonymous with comedy, family, entertainment and generations of shows that warm the heart. He's taken us into the life of a comedian on The Dick Van Dyke Show, across Europe in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and captivated us in London with songs & dance in Mary Poppins as only he could do. It's no wonder he is admired by adults and children of all ages everywhere.

Dick Van Dyke was born in West Plains Missouri in 1925 and is about to celebrate his 95th Birthday this December 13th. You are probably also familiar with Dick's brother Jerry Van Dyke (The Dick Van Dyke Show and Coach) and cousin Gene Hackman.

So fitting to our Thanksgiving celebration this month Dick actually had an ancestor who came over on the Mayflower, John Alden! There are so many other surprises in Dick's life that are truly amazing. For one, he was torn between having a career in entertainment or as a minister. Deciding on Entertainment he still taught Sunday school at his church. Another testament to his amazing life was his determination to do his part in WWII leaving high school before graduation to enlist in the army. But he never gave up his desire to finish high school. At age 78 in 2004 he got his diploma!

After the war Dick continued his career in entertainment on the radio, on tour and on stage with lead roles in Bye, Bye Birdie and The Music Man. Soon his career came to tv with episodes on variety shows and even The Phil Silver's Show. And then it came. In 1961 the first show of many entitled The Dick Van Dyke Show aired bringing Dick into every living room in America and winning all our hearts . The award winning show was about a comic writer named Rob Petrie, his family and wrting team, co-starring Mary Tyler Moore as Rob's wife, Laura . You couldn't help but fall in love with the show and the cast from the opening credits when Dick trips in his living room to the close of each episode.

With a continuous TV career in many shows like Diagnosis Murder Dick was also known to us for all of his incredible big screen starring roles in movies like Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Gin Game where he starred again with Mary Tyler Moore, as well as his recent roles in the Night At The Museum movie series.

Dick Van Dyke's performances, roles, awards & accomplishments in radio, stage, tv, movies and as a great song and dance man are endless as is all the joy he has given us over the years and continues to do so. Thank you Dick for all the great memories. I only wish we could attach the theme song to the Dick Van Dyke Show here in closing.

Years ago Silent Films were the rage in theatres. Here's a look at what people were seeing at their local theatres in the year 1920.

Considered Hollywood's most popular actor of the times, Fairbanks thrilled audiences in many swashbuckling roles such as Robin Hood, The Three Musketeers and The Mark of Zorro. He was married to Mary Pickford and were commonly referred to as Hollywood Royalty.

Mary Pickford was known as America's Sweetheart in the movies. One of the most popular actresses in the business she was also a co-founder of PickfordFairbanks Studios and United Artists with her husband & Charlie Chaplin. She was a leader and pioneer in film, winning awards and hearts alike.

John Barrymore thrilled audiences in movies like Sherlock Holmes, The Sea Beast and Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde. He was part of the Drew & Barrymore family movie dynasty including popular film relatives like Lionel, Ethel and today's film sweetheart Drew. John was one of the early actors who easily made the transition to talkies with his voice and good looks.

Veterans Day - Armistice Day

Over there, over there * Send the word, send the word over there That the Yanks are coming * The Yanks are coming The drums rum-tumming * Everywhere So prepare, say a prayer * Send the word, send the word to beware We'll be over, we're coming over * And we won't come back till it's over (a song by George M. Cohan) Over there Imagine if you can...these are the words sung by a proud nation as its sons went over seas to defend liberty, the free world, and put an end to the first world war that saw 40 million casaulties. Knowing they may never return, thousands of young Americans said good bye to their families and sweethearts to fight for freedom and world peace.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day on the 11th month the first world war came to an end. Celebrations rang from coast to coast as our soldiers returned home to a proud, thankful nation.

In gratitude and celebration of the veterans of World War One, November 11th, "Armistice Day" was declared a National Holiday, "A day dedicated to the cause of world peace", a day earned through the bravery of our troops.

Soon the call was answered to honor all the veterans of the United States from every campaign in tribute to their service and self sacrifice to protect this country, it's people, and our values , for they have risked all in this dedication to the cause of world peace. So unto Armistice Day, a new day marking our appreciation to all our veterans was born, Veterans Day. United States soldiers overseas celebrating the news of the end of World War One

Alvin York

A Land Of Heroes Henry Johnson and Needham Roberts on May 14 , 1918, were serving in th

France when they were attacked by overwhelming numbers of German troops. Both were wounded, Roberts so severely that he was unable to stand or shoot. Johnson fought back with his rifle and grenades. Despite being shot several times he returned fire until his rifle jammed and then used it as a club fighting hand to hand until it broke into pieces.

Seeing the Germans trying to take Roberts prisoner Johnson drew his knife and attacked stabbing several until they all retreated. Johnson had inflicted at least 20 casualties on the Germans and suffered 21 wounds himself. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, The Purple Heart, and France's Croix de Guerre,. In 1918 a poster was published in the US depicting Johnson's heroism with praises from General Pershing. Theodore Roosevelt Jr., son of Pres. Roosevelt and co-founder of the American Legion referred to Johnson as one of the five bravest men in the war. Today you can find a monument honoring Henry in Albany so that our history of our national heroes can be preserved as well as a charter school, post office & a ROTC Battalion all bearing his name.

Alvin York would make his name on October 8 , 1918 in a famous act of bravery th

during an offensive in France. He and around 17 American soldiers came under heavy fire from over 30 enemy machine guns from the hill above. Almost immediately 9 of the 17 Americans were shot. With everyone pinned down from the continuous fire and shells, York advanced alone on the german line firing on them with his rifle as machine gun fire ripped the ground around him. Being a crack shot from Tennessee, York one by one silenced the guns of the enemy. Running out of ammo for his rifle he was suddenly charged by 6 germans with rifles and bayonettes facing him. Drawing his pistol he shot all of his attackers and soon forced all the remaining Germans to surrender. While returning to the American lines York and the remaining 7 American soldiers captured even more Germans. All told York and his men captured 132 enemy soldiers, while he single handedly dealt 20 German troop casualties. For his efforts, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross and several citations from other countries for his bravery. In praise of York, France's Marshal Ferdinand Foch remarked "What you did was the greatest thing accomplished by any soldier of all the armies of Europe."

Rick Lamoreaux

At first glance Rick Lamoreaux may look like anyone else from Binghamton. He has a beautiful wife Lorraine, who he has been happily married to for almost 50 years and 3 children, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. And he had a career in the Binghamton Police force for 14 years until he was medically retired after being hit by a car. But Rick’s life is not like anyone else’s for Rick is a Veteran.

It is said a true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him but because he loves what is behind him. For 85 year old Rick Lamoreaux what was behind him was his love for his family and for his country and nothing was more important to protect and to preserve. In fact for Rick when he sees “a flag being waved there is nothing more important in that moment, for when a soldier sees the flag they see the country they love and would die to protect.”

Rick’s love for his country led him to enlist in the Marines on June 10, 1953, exactly one day after graduating from high school. “The first day of boot camp was different than any of my days living on the farm – a whole lot different”, said Rick. “I was stationed in South Carolina and it was a whole new education on regimentation, discipline, and unit integrity.” From there I went to Korea, five months after the cease fire, as a machine gunner. I was on patrol quite a bit at the demilitarized zone. It was in Vietnam that I saw action and received the Purple Heart twice. From 1966 to ‘67 I was a Marine Reconnaissance Platoon Sergeant and our mission was to do long range reconnaissance patrols in support of infantry units. Most of the time the operations were covert. As Vietnam Special Ops we sometimes came over on subs, destroyers or rubber boats to get closer and in and out. We were a small group of between 4 to 19 and we did long range patrols and what we had to do to collect information.

“The first time I was shot it was on Sept 16, 1966 near the Vietnam DMZ. We were doing reconnaissance in support of landings. There were 19 of us when we made contact with 110 of the North Vietnamese soldiers. For three and a half hours we fought, including hand to hand – six of the Viet Cong for every one of us. Through the fighting I suffered a bullet to my left hip. Finally, we called in artillery and the F4 Phantoms to drop napalm yards away from our position to provide cover so we could be air evaced to the Carrier Iwo Jima. It was at that hospital that I and 6 others were treated with another 2 of our men and our Platoon leader killed. The second time I received a Purple Heart it was when my base camp was hit by Viet Cong mortar fire and mortar fragments shattered through my body. I stayed at a Navy hospital in Da Nang by the demilitarized zone and once patched up I was returned to the combat area until my last day of active duty on August of 1967.

In total Rick has been in the Marines for 14 years and with the Army Reserves for 21 years – doing his full 35 years of service and retiring as a Command Sergeant Major in the US Army. Today Rick stays active with military organizations such as the VFW, DAV, American Legion, AmVets, and the Marine Corp League.

“I developed close relationships with the men I served with. We were an allvolunteer unit. We were all brothers so to speak – brothers born out of our love for our country and our willingness to die for what we believe”.
