Photo of the Month If you’ve ever been up to Bella Valle Farm you’re sure to have met Leslie and Michael Maione. Their family run farm is a great example of how picturesque nature can be in New York. A couple of others you may not have met are Fizz and Fuzz, their two cats pictured above having some fun in their Christmas Tree. Many of their friends have written how this would make a great Christmas Card and we couldn’t agree more!

ON THE TOWN AT THE FORUM

Another incredible performance at the Forum with the Binghamton Philharmonic conducted

by Daniel Hege! Tonight’s program was a tribute to Jazz with special guest vocalist Ayana Del Valle.

We’ve Got Talent Ayana Del Valle Anyone attending one of Ayana’s performances already knows they are witnessing something very special. With a range in so many genres Ayana has been delighting audiences with a personal style that has become her awe inspiring signature.

Ayana was born here in Endwell.

Her sister is also a very accomplished & talented singer. When they were growing up their father taught them how to sing in harmony and they would often perform together for family, friends, and special events like weddings. It was very early on that people started to recognize her gift. Ayana recalls when she was in 4th grade her teacher, Mrs. Bennett had pulled her aside after music class and asked her to sing a solo. It was during this solo performance that Ayana realized there was something about her voice, something she would always be very grateful for. Ayana started singing a lot more at school events in chorus and was also playing violin in orchestra. When her band teacher, Mr. Robin Linnaberry, started a jazz band he had asked her to sing with them making her M.E.’s first Jazz vocalist. And so she continued performing in orchestra, choir and musicals while also playing on the school’s softball and volleyball teams.

After high school Ayana went to the Purchase College Conservatory of Music with a Vocal Jazz Performance Major. It was here in New York that she would make her mark in music performing on many notable stages and clubs and with many legendary artists.

From the days in NYC till today, Ayana has never stopped singing. And little by little the path that Ayana started on as a child singing with her family has brought her to where she is now. To her long list of credits singing, writing and performing on iconic stages like Carnegie Hall, The Blue Note Jazz Club, Smoke, Cleopatra’s Needle and other stages across the US and Caribbean, she now also teaches private voice lessons founding the Del Valle School of Voice. Recently you may have caught Ayana performing locally at establishments like the Number 5, events like the Danielle House “Fun Raiser”, and at the Forum where she sang with the Binghamton Philharmonic in an elegant affair paying tribute to Jazz greats like Nina Simone. You may even catch her on America’s Got Talent having gone to their auditions recently. Ayana’s heart has always told her to put herself out there, take a chance and pursue her goals and dreams. You never know what you can accomplish until you try, and we can’t wait to see what is next for her. Thank you Ayana for helping make this a great place to live!

Downtown Holiday Parade

Happy 100th Birthday George Blabac! of Johnson City Born on Christmas Day 1919 George has seen and done a lot over the years. He says the one thing he would want to be remembered for in life “is my hard work as a father and a civil servant and a servant to our country.”

George was only 16 when he had to quit school to work to support his mom and his 13 siblings following the death of his father.

“My motto in life is WORK HARD. That’s what I was taught and I was never afraid of it. I went to work for the WPA Works progress administration which was a New Deal program started by President Roosevelt for public works. I also found work at the steel mill in West VA where my father was killed in 1929.” When WWII broke out George enlisted in the Army. “I fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was stationed in the 370th field artillery battalion and I manned the Bazooka.

WW2 was the first time the bazooka was used and it could actually destroy the Panzer tank. It was a new weapon for that time.”

“I moved to Johnson City in 1947 after the war because several of my sisters were here and had opened up a couple of markets. One of which is still in operation in Chenango Bridge called the Red and White. I worked at several places throughout the years including roofing for

Binghamton Slag Roofing and I was a firefighter for Johnson City for 25 years until my retirement in 1974.

I loved all of the work I did.

And through it all I have seen many changes in this area.

The major change I have seen through the years was the end of the Endicott Johnson shoe factory. Another big change is the Oakdale Mall and all of the huge roadway systems and highways.”

“I am also very proud of my children and would like to be remembered for creating them. I believe the secret to a long life is to enjoy what you do.

I always enjoyed my work and I always enjoyed my family.” George has 5 children with his first spouse who is deceased but remains with his loving wife Dolly for the past 39 years. He has 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, many of whom were in attendance at his hundredth year.

George stays very active in the community and in his free time he loves to watch good movies, read, and being with his children and grandchildren.

If you see George this Christmas remember to wish him a Happy 100th Birthday and thank him for his service and for all he has done for our community!

Endicott, New York. A town like many others in America. A town with people

much the same as the people of other towns. Good people. People with hopes and dreams. A town filled with traditions and a history to be proud of. With schools to cheer at home games, and parades to watch as the marching bands pass on by. With parents making a home for their kids to grow, sharing a story at the kitchen table of yesterdays and tomorrows. There’s a lot to be proud of in a town like Endicott. From the generations of people who go off to work each day, to those who have said good bye to loved ones as they went overseas to fight for freedom not knowing if this was the last time they would see their family or sweathearts or this little good town they grew up in. Yes there’s a lot to be proud of here. A little piece of magic that we can hold dear. And this magic seems to always get just a little bit bigger around December. A time when we look forward that much more to the family get togethers and the holiday meal with an unforgettable aroma coming from the kitchen that always lets you know you’re home for the Holidays. A time when we greet both life-long friends and people we pass on the street with a cheerful hello & Merry Christmas. This Holiday magic is here all the year long, yet from town to town just like in this town, when the snow starts to fall and the Holidays are at our doorstep we all take just a little more time to take a look and appreciate all we have to be grateful for. Yes, there’s a lot to be proud of in our town, my town, Endicott.

The Community came out to support the Danielle House “family” for a fun filled evening of fabulous food, prizes, basket raffles & a silent auction to help the Danielle House provide lodging & comfort to patients and their loved ones, when far from home during medical crisis or treatment. Besides helping to support this truly great cause everyone got to enjoy a really fun filled evening with friends while dining and listening to our own Ayana Del Valle.

Best friends can make you laugh even when you find it hard to smile

It has been said that friendship is the strong foundation from which a lasting love is built. For Juanita Moore Evanek and her husband Tom this concept is more than a saying, it is the proof of their life.

Juanita and Tom met when they were just teenagers. It was one of those chance encounters that would change the path of both of their lives. And it happened on January 1st 1960 at a Campville Fire Station dance known for its record hops. You see, although Juanita was at the dance to enjoy herself and the start of the new year, Tom showed up with his friends, not to join into the festivities but rather to pick up his friend’s sister and give her a ride home. Yet what was supposed to be a simple quick in and out run turned into something much different once he noticed Juanita. He saw her across the room. She was a beautiful vision in her white dress and he knew he had to alter his plans and meet her. Although it was love at first site for him he knew he was too young to rush things so they concentrated on developing a friendship and in a short time became best friends – the type of friends that did everything together and told everything to each other with no secrets or hidden agendas. Juanita said that Tom loved the outdoors and so most of their dates centered around fishing and trapping. And even though most of their outings turned disastrous with the weather, the rain never dampened their spirits as they found they could laugh and smile just being by each other.

This special connection was destined to blossom into marriage and upon Juanita’s graduation they married at St. Pauls Church in Endicott.

Fast forwarding to today they are proud to say they have 3 children, 4 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Times may not have always been easy but their life together has been blissfully effortless and it all began with mutual respect and a deep friendship.

Henry Bradford Endicott

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is noted for saying “When a great man dies, for years the light he leaves behind him, lies on the paths of men.�

This Christmas season I wanted to tell the story of Henry Bradford Endicott whose light has guided men to advance themselves through business and charity and to become the International leaders from which books are written.

Henry always had a mind for coupling business with giving, a mindset that began when he was just a boy and would sell milk and split the profits with his mother. At 22 he started H.B. Endicott & Co and then became the treasurer of the Commonwealth Shoe & Leather Company. It was this company that led him to this area - not with the initial intent to settle or make his footprint, but rather to solve a problem with a company that sold him the needed leather resources.

Upon discovering the issue was that the company had financial difficulties, Henry purchased it and began making plans to grow this company and help the people of this area.

One of his most notable outreaches to help another was to a man who was his foreman and had dreams of being a Partner in his business yet had not the money to back it up. To this Henry loaned George F. Johnson $150,000 and

renamed the company the Endicott Johnson Corporation.

Through their combined leadership EJ became the largest employer in the United States. And during a time when other factories were being plagued with strikes EJ was proud to say they had none. Workers were happy because not only were they being given benefits unheard of for its day but also because Henry treated everyone as an equal regardless of their position in his factory or in life.

Henry’s spirit and his can-do attitude keeps the light shining bright for those who are continuing to make Endicott a great place to live and to work. By example, Johnson dedicated himself to coupling business with giving, including loaning Watson the money he needed for IBM to become an International Powerhouse. And this spirit has drawn others in as well including start-up Imperium3 (NYS’s only Lithium Ion battery business), Tiger Ventures (which is defining the school of the future with their on-site business incubator which is spinning businesses including the hydroponic company AgZeit), and BAE Systems, where thanks to them, every second an aircraft takes off in the world with controls made right here in Endicott. And not only are these companies creating thousands of jobs in this area but their sense of giving back to the people, nonprofits and general community in this area is such an outpouring of support.

We will continue to see great things for Endicott for as Newton’s law of Inertia has taught us, objects in motion stay in motion. And the object of giving and advancing the businesses and people of this area have always been the culture of the people in Endicott as pronounced by the acts of Henry B. Endicott. Neighborhood Chef Kelly Honsinger Sharing Recipes & Friendship A pot of soup simmering over the stove always brings about a feeling of comfort and reminds me of my childhood. Whether it is a cold winter day or I’m not feeling well or a loved one isn’t, nothing cures the soul better than a bowl of homemade soup. Making a pot of soup not only lifts my spirits and mood but it also makes my home smell wonderful! Most of my favorite recipes are handwritten and are from friends and family. Most of them have splattered tomato sauce, chocolate or grease on them and are so worn out that they are barely legible. This Pasta Fagioli recipe came from one of my dearest Italian friends many years ago. Bon appetite!

Red Pasta Fagioli Olive Oil 3-4 cloves of fresh garlic, minced 1 medium onion, chopped 3 stalks of celery, chopped 3 carrots, chopped 2 sausage links (hot or mild) chopped up and remove casing ½ lb of hamburger meat 1 cup of Ditalini pasta or as much as desired (cooked separately) 1 16 ounce can of diced tomatoes 1 16 ounce can of tomato sauce 1 28 ounce can of crushed tomatoes 1 32 ounce box of chicken broth or more if desired based on the amount of pasta added 1 can of cannellini beans 1 can red kidney beans 1 teaspoon or rosemary or more if desired, crushed Salt and pepper to taste 1 teaspoon of garlic powder

Cover the bottom of soup pot with olive oil and place on low heat. Add garlic, onion and meat until cooked through. Add chopped celery, carrots, chicken broth, tomatoes, seasoning and let it simmer for a while. Once the flavors have emerged with desired seasoning, add drained white and red beans and cooked pasta. Serve and sprinkle with fresh parmesan cheese.
