EDITOR'S NEWS IN BRIEF NOTE WELCOME to the June 2022 edition of the Yeovil Press community newspaper – packed with local news, features and sport from the Yeovil and surrounding area. It has been another busy month – most notably the four-day Bank Holiday weekend to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Seventy years on the throne as monarch to the UK and Commonwealth is a remarkable achievement and is unlikely ever to be matched or bettered in the centuries to come. Whatever your views are on the Royal Family there cannot be any denying that Queen Elizabeth has put in a lifetime of duty and service. There were so many events going on that it was really great to see communities coming together – especially after the last couple of years which have been ravaged by restrictions brought about because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Yeovil Press has put together a 20-page Platinum Jubilee special pull-out for you to keep and look back on in years to come. Another really fabulous event to have happened over the past month was the special YTFC Legends at Huish Park on May 14. Nearly 2,000 people turned up to see of Yeovil Town’s old favourites take part in a match to help raise funds for the Adam Stansfield Foundation in memory of the former Glovers player who died in 2010 at the age of just 31 from bowel cancer. Thank you to those that have advertised in this edition – your support is very much appreciated as always. Many thanks to James Healey, of JRH Media, for his help with design and layout, and photographer Christine Jones for her support. The July edition of Yeovil Press will be out on Thursday and Friday, July 7-8. If you would like to get in touch – please email yeovilpress@gmail.com . Take care, keep well and please keep safe. Yeovil Hospital midwives make huge strides in providing equality in maternity care MIDWIVES at Yeovil District Hospital have launched new training across Somerset which aims to raise awareness of inequalities seen through pregnancy, birth and beyond. Within the UK and across the world there are stark inequalities in maternal and neonatal mortality. The reasons for this are many, but Yeovil midwives Bea Chubb and Becky Cockings recognised that their midwifery training predominantly focused on white mothers and babies, from text books to training mannequins. These discussions over a night shift together prompted them to apply for research funding through a scheme run jointly by the trust and Bournemouth University, ‘1,000 pounds for 1,000 words’ competition. Their submission looked at purchasing resuscitation dolls that represent black mothers and babies, to reflect the variety of families being cared for through the maternity service. The aim being to help broaden the

training midwives receive. It was by winning this competition that Bea and Becky were introduced to Emma Symonds, the Trust’s equality, diversity and inclusion lead; Vanessa Heaslip, a senior lecturer at Bournemouth University, and from the Trust’s research team, Janine Valentine. Between the years of 2016 and 2018, for every 100,000 black women who gave birth, 34 died. In comparison, out of 100,000 white women, only eight died during childbirth in the same period. Bea and Becky’s research identified that enhanced training may improve the outcomes for families from ethnic backgrounds and are now taking action to make these changes. Bea said: “Even though the worldwide statistics for baby mortality is declining, there is still a long way to go when it comes to improving these outcomes, especially when it concerns families from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds. Targeted initiatives have

had more of an impact for white babies. We hope that the training package by the team will be able to make a difference for all babies and aims to improve the care we give.” Each training session focused on implicit bias, stereotyping, jaundice and reviewing advice for parents once they are discharged from the unit. Feedback from midwives who have undertaken the training said it is fantastic asset and had a clearer understanding of biases and cultural stereotyping than they did

previously. Becky added: “There was no doubt that our midwives would love the opportunity to further improve their skills and knowledge, especially when it meant providing better care for our patients. This is what we all come to work for; to provide the best care we can for those who need us.” PHOTO: Midwives Bea Chubb (left) and Becky Cocking (centre) are pictured with the health Trust’s equality, diversity and inclusion lead Emma Symonds.

COFFEE BREAK CHAT

35 questions in 60 seconds WELCOME to the Coffee Break Chat feature to the Yeovil Press – YOUR monthly community newspaper – in which we ask somebody from the local community a set of random questions. Each month we will pose 35 questions to a member of the local community and they will give their truthful and honest answers about their likes and dislikes, hopes and aspirations and childhood memories. It is all a bit of fun, but might provide some interesting and discussionprovoking questions along the way for Yeovil Press readers. This month’s Coffee Break Chat spotlight falls on Luke Simon, chief executive of the School in a Bag charity, which is based at Chilthorne Domer. Luke is gearing up for the fabulous Home Farm Fest music event – which runs from the evening of Friday, June 10, through to 8pm on Sunday, June 12. It is the charity’s biggest fundraiser

and makes a welcome return for the first time since 2019 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. For more details about the festival – go to www.homefarmfest.co.uk . The Yeovil Press has also published a Home Farm Fest Press publication to support the event. School in a Bag provides schoolbags – packed with everyday learning equipment – for children in need around the world. Coffee Break Chat has been kindly sponsored by the No5 Café Diner which can be found at Kingfisher Close in Gazelle Road on the Lynx Trading Estate. AROUND THE TOWN

Together we will beat cancer - Race for Life 2022 PEOPLE gathered at Yeovil College for the annual Race for Life 5k event in aid of the Cancer Research UK charity. Thousands of pounds were raised by the runners and walkers who took part in the ever-popular event on May 22. Many came dressed in fancy dress costume and pink was most definitely the colour of the day for Race for Life which started and finished at Yeovil College and took in a route which included the

Yeovil Recreation Centre and the Bill Whistlecroft Athletics Arena. There were a few tears during an emotional moment ahead of the run where the participants thought about why they were raising money for Cancer Research UK. But the tears were wiped away and the smiles shone through as they let their feet do the talking – together we will beat cancer. PHOTOS: Submitted.

Mayor's Diary: I have met some incredible people in my role as Mayor of Yeovil IT is only right that I start this column with a big Thank You to every candidate who put themselves forward in the recent elections. This reflects how passionate people are about representing their local areas and being part of future direction or change. I welcome the newly elected councillors to the Yeovil town council, and I would encourage everyone to familiarise themselves with any changes within their wards. Thank you also to the public who had confidence in supporting me in regaining my position. This has given me a lovely boost and a fabulous start to my

second term of office as your Mayor. Our recent four-day jubilee festivities kicked off early for me with Fairmead Community School’s Platinum jubilee celebrations. I was impressed with their version of the Queen’s carriage that enabled the children to ride around the playground in style, I even got the chance to have a little go myself. ‘Love Yeovil’ hosted the official start of the traditional and symbolic markings such as the lighting of the beacon, celebrations with music and the bugle call. To mark the Queen’s 70 years on the throne Yeovil Town Council put on a

spectacular event at Yeovil Recreational Ground which was packed with music, sports, crafts, food and enjoyment. This Jubilee celebration was supported beyond my imagination and saw staff and volunteers playing collective roles to pull it off. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was actively involved in making these magical memories for our Town and community. This past month I have also enjoyed a full diary of engagements, including supporting the Yeovil district hospital abseils and Cancer research Uk’s race for life to St Margaret’s fete and sponsors

evening for HMS volunteer band. I have met some incredible people on my journey through my Mayorship role and have witnessed how many people sacrifice a lot to provide services for the benefit of the town. I have learned that through love and pride people put themselves forward for what they are passionate about and I am truly grateful to those that help and provide to make our town a better place. CLLR EVIE POTTS-JONES Mayor of Yeovil

Evie is re-elected for a second term as Mayor of Yeovil THE Mayor of Yeovil, Cllr Evie PottsJones, was re-elected to serve a second term in the role at the annual meeting of the town council. “I am humbled and honoured to have been given this opportunity of trust in becoming your Mayor for the forthcoming year and second term of office in this prestigious role,” she said. “As Mayor I have been lucky enough to attend so many events and represent the town and feel privileged to have received so many personal invitations; I look forward to continuing this role and meeting even more people. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow councillors for their support once again.” Cllr Potts-Jones added: “I have been

reminded by many predecessors of the well-used saying that the first year of being a Mayor you learn about the role and the second year you enjoy it. I can tell you now that I have really enjoyed the first year, so the second year is going to be absolutely cracking!” The Mayor’s Award was presented to the Yeovil branch of the Nationwide Building Society for its voluntary work in the community – especially helping to fundraise for potentially lifesaving defibrillators. Cllr Potts-Jones announced that she had raised £10,000 during her first term which would be split between Mind in Somerset and the SSAFA forces charity. PHOTOS: Christine Jones.

Liam, 21, must be one of Yeovil Town Council's youngest ever members A NEW member of Yeovil Town Council is looking to give a voice to young people – after all he is only 21-yearsold himself. Cllr Liam Watts represents the Abbey Manor South Ward on Yeovil Town Council and he won the seat due to him being an uncontested candidate for the Liberal Democrats. “This position opened up for me by chance really,” he said. “I am a big fan of Yeovil Town FC, and have attended most home games over this last season. It was at one of our home matches, where I was asked if I would like to work for the council, by Cllr Graham Oakes, who is a member of the town council and South Somerset District Council. “I had no idea in what capacity, but I didn’t hesitate in accepting. I gave him a call the following day, and that was it, I was well on my way to becoming a councillor, I just had to get through the elections, or at least, that’s what I thought. “My opposition for this ward, put himself forward in another ward, leading to an uncontested election, saving me the stress of having to win a vote. I am

very grateful to both Cllr Oakes and Cllr Rob Stickland, for putting faith in me and allowing me this opportunity.” Cllr Watts said: “During the pandemic, I came to terms with how much of this country’s governance I disagree with. “The handling of the pandemic, how it seems a different set of rules apply to Parliament, and generally the state of the country in a socio-economic regard. “At this time, I researched things like “how to become an MP?”, and “how can I get into politics?” and most results were to volunteer in your community, to campaign within a political party, or to join your local council. “At this time, I didn’t know how to get my foot in the door, despite this information. I wanted to have a greater impact on the local area and country, so I decided that I would not pursue politics at this time. “However, when Cllr Oakes asked me, if I wanted to become a councillor, of course I agreed, as I am now well inside the door and can begin affecting change. “I need to make an impact locally, in the town I have spent my teenage years and few years of adulthood, before I can

make as big an impact as I wish to make. I will do everything possible to help make Yeovil the bustling town it used to be, with the help and backing of my fellow councillors and the people of Yeovil. “At just 21 years old, I am under the presumption, that I am one of the youngest, if not the youngest councillor the town has ever had. I will be looking to put forward improvements and fresh ideas to my fellow councillors, which will look to help make Yeovil a town with more opportunities for young people, and I hope that my perspective can help steer the town into lasting and effective positive change.” Also new to Yeovil Town Council following the election are Cllrs Jamie Lock, Dave Woan, Barry Boyton and Helen Stonier, all of the Liberal Democrats, and independent member Cllr Tareth Casey. Cllr Nigel Gage remains the only Conservative member on the council. Six members of the previous council are now no longer on it. Liberal Democrat duo Peter Gubbins and David Recardo did not stand, while fellow LibDems, David Gubbins and Gordon Hunting, both lost their seats at the election along with

Labour’s Terry Ledlie and independent member Mike Lock. PHOTO: Cllr Liam Watts.

JUST four councillors from Yeovil Town Council were present at all of the meetings they were scheduled to attend during the past year. Councillors sit on various committees throughout the year and that means that some have more meetings to attend than others. While the Ex-Officio members – Mayor (Cllr Evie Potts-Jones) and Deputy Mayor (Cllr Andy Kendall) – sit on every committee and so have a maximum of 40 meetings to attend. Cllr Kendall was one of only four members who achieved a 100 per cent attendance record during 2021-22 by attending all 40 scheduled meetings. Cllrs Nigel Gage and Tony Lock attended all of their allocated 12 meetings, while Cllr Jeny Snell, who was only elected to the town council at the start of 2022, attended the five meetings she was due to be present for. Other members who had attendance records of 90 per cent and above were Cllr Royston Spinner (93 per cent), Cllr Graham Oakes (92 per cent), Cllrs Karl Gill and David Gubbins (both on 90 per cent). There are clearly occasions during the year when councillors are unable to attend meetings such as illness,

work commitments or “conflicting engagements” which appears to cover a multitude of reasons. Yeovil Town Council meeting attendance records for 2021-22: 1 Nigel Gage 12 meetings, 12 attended, 100%; Andrew Kendall* 40-40-100%; Tony Lock 12-12-100%; Jeny Snell (from January 11, 2022) 5-5-100%; 5 Royston Spinner 30-28-93%; 6 Graham Oakes 2422-92%; 7 Karl Gill 29-26-90%; David Gubbins 29-26-90%; 9 David Recardo 23-20-87%; 10 Andy Soughton 13-1185%; 11 Rob Stickland 29-24-83%; 12 Terry Ledlie 29-23-79%; Ashley Richards 24-19-79%; 14 Emma-Jayne Hopkins 1310-77%; Gordon Hunting 30-23-77%; 16 Evie Potts-Jones 40-30-75%; 17 Pauline Lock 19-14-74%; 18 Wes Read 23-1670%; 19 Helen Stonier (until September 29, 2021) 15-10-67%; 20 Mike Lock 7-457%; 21 Jane Lowery 23-12-52%; Sarah Lowery 29-15-52%; 23 Olivia DarlingFinan (until May 23, 2021) 2-1-50%; 24 Jade Dash 23-9-39% 25 Peter Gubbins 7-2-29%; 26 Kaysar Hussain 18-5-28%. The * indicates Ex-Officio – the Mayor (Cllr Evie Potts-Jones) and Deputy Mayor (Cllr Andy Kendall) – who are scheduled to attend every council meeting during the year.

THE Liberal Democrats have taken control of the Somerset County Council following the local elections held last month. And in one of the most keenly contested divisions the former Mayor of Ilminster, Cllr Val Keitch, who is currently leader of South Somerset District Council, claimed the second seat available in Ilminster – but only just. Cllr Sue Osborne, of the Conservatives, topped the poll with 1,494 votes in Ilminster. But there were two recounts to determine who won the second seat during a dramatic count at the Westlands Yeovil entertainment venue on Friday, May 6. It was eventually conceded by the Conservatives that Cllr Keitch, of the Liberal Democrats, had taken it by just five votes from Tory candidate Jo Woodcock. The LibDems’ other candidate, Ray Buckler, came fourth – just eight votes behind third place. The look of relief on Cllr Keitch’s face spoke volumes. More than 430,000 people were eligible to vote for the 337 candidates standing for the 110 seats. The turnout at the election by district was Mendip – 39.3%; Sedgemoor – 30%; Somerset West and

Taunton – 38.73%; South Somerset – 38.15. The new look county council is made up of 61 LibDems, 36 Conservatives, five Green Party and five Labour councillors and three independent members. Yeovil remained very much In LibDem control, although Cllr Faye Purbrick won one of the seats for the Conservatives. This year’s election was different as 110 councillors were elected – two in each of the 55 divisions – as Somerset prepares for the biggest change in local government in decades. For their first year, the councillors will take responsibility for all current county council services and oversee the local government reorganisation to establish the single unitary Somerset Council on April 1, 2023. District councils will remain until March 31, 2023, and the councillors serving on them will continue in their roles until that date. From April 1, 2023, the 110 members of the unitary council will be responsible for services that are currently delivered by the county and four district councils, ranging from adults’ and children’s social care to highways and housing, and from libraries to planning and licensing.

LibDems take control of County Councillor town council attendance records for 2021-22 Hall as Val has a nervous few hours

40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FALKLANDS WAR OF 1982 - WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

We will remember them as we look back 40 years WHEN Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands on April 2, 1982, the Royal Naval Air Station at Yeovilton immediately responded. All the Yeovilton squadrons were brought to immediate readiness and four resident squadrons - the 800 and 801 Sea Harrier and the 845 and 846 Wessex/Sea King were joined by the newly-created 809 Sea Harrier and the 848 Wessex. Lynx helicopters from 815 Squadron were already embarked in many of the surface ships despatched almost at once to the South Atlantic. By the end of May, 1982, 126 aircraft and more than 1,400 men from Yeovilton were deployed in ships in the South Atlantic. The Falklands could not have been retaken without naval air power. The Sea Harrier defeated the Argentine Air Force and scored more than 20 air combat victories. Despite Yeovilton playing a pivotal role in reclaiming the Falkland Islands, success was not achieved without casualties for the air base. Among those who were killed included: * PO Aircrewman Kevin “Ben” Casey, of 846 Squadron, was killed on April 23, 1982, when his Sea King helicopter from HMS Hermes crashed into the sea after dark. He was the first of 249 Task Force victims who did not return home from the

Falkland Islands. * Lt Nick Taylor, of 800 Squadron, was killed on May 4, 1982, when his Sea Harrier was shot down while attacking Goose Green airfield. Lt Taylor’s body, still in its ejector seat, was recovered by the residents of Goose Green and buried under Argentine supervision with full military honours very close to where he came to rest. The site is now fenced off and marked with a proper headstone and is lovingly tended by the residents of Goose Green. * Lt William Curtis and Lt Cmdr John Eyton-Jones, both of 801 Squadron, were killed when their Sea Harriers were lost over the South Atlantic at night in bad weather on May 6, 1982. * Cpl Michael Love, of 846 Squadron, died when a British troop carrying helicopter ditched at night between ships in the Task Force. The tragedy on May 19, 1982, claimed the lives of 21 servicemen. * Lt Cmdr Gordon Batt, of 800 Squadron, was killed when his Sea Harrier crashed into the sea shortly after take off from HMS Hermes on May 23, 1982. He flew several important missions as strike leader including the bombing attacks on Stanely airfield, Goose Green, and several Argentine ships. For those services and outstanding

How the Falklands War unfolded 40 years ago JUNE 14 will mark the 40th anniversary of when Major General Jeremy Moore was able to announce to the world that the Falkland Islands were once again living under the Government of their choice. Seventy-four days of Argentine occupancy of the South Atlantic islands had elapsed. When Argentina invaded the Falklands in April 2, 1982, a huge task force was assembled in Great Britain and dispatched to restore Her Majesty’s Sovereignty. Here we take a look at some of the key dates of the Falklands War of 1982: April 2: Argentina invades the Falklands. April 3: South Georgia invaded. April 5: First Task Force ships leave Portsmouth. April 7: 200-mile exclusion zone declared around the Islands. April 9: Canberra sails from Southampton. April 25: South Georgia retaken. May 1: Port Stanley airfield bombed.

May 2: General Belgrano torpedoed. May 4: HMS Sheffield hit by an Exocet missile. May 15: Pebble Island raided. May 21: San Carlos landings. HMS Ardent and HMS Argonaut bombed. May 25: HMS Coventry bombed. Atlantic Conveyor hit by an Exocet missile. May 28: Goose Green attacked. May 29: Argentines surrender at Goose Green. May 30: Mount Kent taken. June 3: Bluff Cove and Fitzroy occupied. June 5: Mount Challenger retaken. June 8: Disaster at Fitzroy as RFA’s Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram bombed. June 11-12: Mount Longdon, Two Sisters and Mount Harriet taken. June 12: HMS Glamorgan hit by shorelaunched Exocet missile. June 13-14: Mount William, Wireless Ridge and Tumbledown taken. June 14: Argentine invasion forces surrender. Port Stanley liberated.

leadership he was nominated for the award of a Distinguished Service Cross. But then the tragedy struck an hour before midnight when he launched from Hermes with three other Sea Harriers to attack Stanley airfield once more. He was awarded the DSC posthumously. * Air Engineer Mechanic, Adrian Anslow, of 845 Squadron, died when the Cunard container ship Atlantic Conveyor was hit by an exocet missile on May 25, 1982. Leading Air Engineer, Don Pryce, of 845 Squadron, was killed in the same incident. * Forty years ago on May 21, 1982, the Type 21 Frigate HMS Ardent came under a ferocious Argentinian air attack in Grantham Sound. As a result the ship suffered catastrophic damage and was eventually abandoned. Sadly, 22 of her crew lost their lives that day including four members of her Lynx Flight – Petty Officer Peter Brouard, Chief Petty Officer Allan McAulay, Lieutenant Brian Murphy and Lieutenant Commander John Sephton who was posthumously awarded a Distinguished Service Cross.

40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FALKLANDS WAR OF 1982 - WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Service held to remember the sacrifices of the Falklands War of 1982 SERVING personnel, Falklands’ veterans and relatives of those who were deployed to the South Atlantic attended a commemorative service at the home of naval aviation to mark the 40th anniversary of the conflict. Four decades ago 126 aircraft and 1,400 personnel from Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton in Somerset set off on the 8,000-mile voyage to the South Atlantic on Operation Corporate, to liberate the Falkland Islands. All Yeovilton’s squadrons were brought to immediate readiness in the spring of 1982. The four resident Naval Air Squadrons, 800 & 801 NAS with Sea Harriers, 845 NAS with the Wessex 5 and 846 NAS with the Sea King Mk4, were joined by the newly-created 809 NAS (Sea Harrier) and 847 and 848 NAS (Wessex 5). Lynx helicopters from 815 NAS were already embarked in many of the surface ships, dispatched almost at once to the South Atlantic. Twelve sailors and Royal Marines from RNAS Yeovilton died in the conflict and an avenue of 12 hornbeam trees and a Portland stone memorial commemorates

their loss, alongside the sports pitches at the air station. Barbara McAulay’s husband and brother were among the 1,400 Yeovilton personnel with the task force. Only her brother, Chief Petty Officer Peter Hammond, serving with 846 NAS returned. Her husband Allan – known as Mac and also a chief – was assigned to HMS Ardent, maintaining the frigate’s Lynx. He was killed when the ship was bombed during the first day of the landings at San Carlos. Mrs McAulay had been enjoying a rare break amid weeks of tension. She returned home from a day out in London to find “those familiar uniformed men” in her living room and her sister-in-law at the door. “I said: ‘Is it Mac or Peter? And she said ‘Mac’,” she recalled. Meanwhile 8,000 miles away her brother was told matter-of-factly by his commanding officer that Mac “hadn’t made it.” Mr Hammond continued: “And then you get on with life. But later you sit there and ponder and ponder. The guilt

complex is enormous.” ‘Mac’ McAulay’s name was read out in the Yeovilton roll of honour during the commemorative service, which also marked the 40th anniversary of the deadly attacks on HMS Coventry and Atlantic Conveyor by the Argentinian Air Force, resulting in the loss of a major warship and a key logistical asset to the UK forces, along with many vital aircraft on the Conveyer. Leading the service held at RNAS Yeovilton on May 25, 2022, was The Right Reverend John Lomas, Bishop of Swansea and Brecon, who during his 12 years in the Fleet Air Arm serviced helicopters, Phantoms and Sea Harriers. He saw service during the Falklands Conflict as a Leading Air Engineering Mechanic with 809 NAS. Guest of honour at the service was Rear Admiral Steve Moorhouse, Director Force Generation and Rear Admiral Fleet Air Arm. “We are here today to remember the exploits of 40 years ago, a brief period of our time, just 74 days,” he said. “And

for those that have had the privilege of visiting the Falkland Islands, it can be the most beautiful place in the world, but also one of the most unforgiving places in the world as well. It gives you some of the most inhospitable weather conditions that can often change on an hourly basis. “The British Forces that deployed the 8,000 miles to the South Atlantic, carried out something which can only be described as truly spectacular. In the space of days over 126 ships sailed from the UK with almost the entire Fleet Air Arm embarked. They stored ships within hours, sailed within days and were within weeks under regular repeated aerial attacks and bombardments from the Argentinians. “What happened over 74 days we know well, over 250 personnel gave their lives with the loss of six of our ships. Those lessons from the Falklands are important today and our Operational Sea Training reflects the experiences of many of you here today.” STORY AND PHOTOS: Courtesy of the Royal Navy.

40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FALKLANDS WAR OF 1982 - WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Remembering former Yeovil schoolboy killed in the Falklands aged just 17 JUNE 11-12 will mark the 40th anniversary of the Battle for Mount Longdon during the Falklands War. That night, 23 British paratroopers lost their lives taking the mountain against overwhelming odds. One of the 23 dead was Ian Scrivens, of Yeovil, a former Westfield School pupil, and still only aged 17 when he was killed. He was one of a small group of 17-yearold soldiers who had been sent to the Falklands because they were too young to be sent to Northern Ireland. To coincide with the 25th anniversary of the battle in 2007 a book was published written by Mark Eyles-Thomas, who was also 17 at the time of the Falklands War, and he and Ian were tending another young soldier who had been wounded, when the Yeovil lad was shot by an Argentine sniper. The book - Sod That For a Game of Soldiers - tells the story for the first time of Ian’s bravery on the mountain. Mark Eyles-Thomas had travelled to the Falklands in 1982 with three friends who he had met in the Junior Parachute Company which was responsible for training 16-year-old school-leavers. They were Jason Burt, Ian Scrivs’ Scrivens, of Yeovil, who he described as a 6ft skinhead who was hard as iron but would dance like John Travolta to his favourite Motown music’, and Neil Grose. On the night of June 11-12, 1982, the men of 3 Para were given the task of taking the heavily defended summit of Mount Longdon which lay four miles west of the Falklands capital of Port Stanley. Their section commander, Corp-oral Brian Milne, stepped on an anti-personnel mine and the surprise attack was gone as machine-gun tracer rounds rained down on them and flares lit up the sky. Mark writes: “Mount Longdon, previously cold, dark and still, had now come alive. The mountain and our initial objective were still 100 yards away to my right. “Our section, now out in the open land of the minefield, was vulnerable to the enemy’s gunfire. Cpl Milne’s screams reduced to the horrendous groans of a man in serious pain.” The men were instructed to take out an Argentine position and during the charge’ both Jason Burt and Neil Grose were shot. Mark takes up the story “Jas?” I called out. Nothing came back. “Tom, is that

heap. I sat there not believing what had happened. One minute I was talking to Scrivs with my hand on his shoulder, the next - ZAP - he was gone. Then Grose looked at me. “Where’s Scrivs?” he asked. I didn’t want to tell him, but he could see it in my eyes. Grose screwed up his eyes, this time in the pain of losing a friend, and tears fell. I cried, too.” Mark goes on in the story to say how he helped Grose back to relative safety, but it was there that his third friend lost his battle for life because of the injuries he had sustained. “Nightmares and flashbacks are part of a soldier’s return from battle,” he writes.

“They began the first night after the fighting on Mount Longdon and I have lived with them ever since. “We were young and naïve back then, but I believe strongly that no 17-year-old should have to risk his life for his country. “I wish the Falklands had never happened as I would now be enjoying the company of my three friends, who I miss dearly. “Not a day goes by when I do not think of them. “I hope that by describing the events surrounding their deaths, I haven’t caused their families any more pain. “At the tender age of 17, Scrivs, Grose and Jas gave their lives for their country in the most courageous circumstances. “They must not be forgotten.”

you?” a voice asked. Tom was my nickname. “Is that you, Scrivs?” I said. “Yeah, I’m over here with Grose. He’s been shot.” I crawled back to look for Jas and spotted him lying face-down about 30ft from where I had taken cover. I called to him, but he didn’t answer. A round from a machine gun had penetrated his head, killing him instantly. Then I crawled over to Scrivs, who was with Grose in the middle of the battlefield. “I think he’s been shot in the chest,” said Scrivs. “But I can’t find the exit wound.” Each time a shot rang out, Scrivs would lie over Grose, whose birthday it was, to protect him. “How’re you enjoying your birthday party, mate?” Scrivs jokingly quizzed Grose. “You certainly know how to have a do. I think the neighbours will be upset with the noise, though.” Grose tried to laugh, but the pain was too much. “Don’t make me laugh,” he pleaded. “We’re going to have to move him,” I said to Scrivs. I placed my hand on Scrivs’ shoulder to beckon his head nearer to mine. At that very moment a single shot rang out. Scrivs fell across my lap and fluid splattered on my face. I pushed Scrivs off me with an instinctive and repulsive jerk. He lay motionless in a limp, crumpled

Asbestos At: Beales Dept Store, High Street, Yeovil Powrmatic, Illminster I act for the family of the late Mrs Alex Scriven who passed away from mesothelioma at the age of 69. Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lung, linked to past exposures to asbestos dust and fibres which are often microscopic and invisible. Alex lost her life to this asbestos disease last April and her family are continuing with her asbestos exposure case. Alex worked at Denner’s dept store which was taken over by Beales between 1982 to 2003. If anyone else worked there and can remember any building works or any asbestos then please do come forward. We understand that before Beales closed down there were orange asbestos warning stickers around the store. Powrmatic: Alex was also exposed to asbestos dust from laundering her husband’s work overalls and Keith Scriven worked at Powrmatic between 1974 to 1990 as a stud welder. The old factory was at Winterhay Lane before the company moved to Hort Bridge in 1981. He worked on large industrial boilers and used asbestos rope in the factory. If anyone else worked at Powrmatic and came into contact with asbestos whilst there, please do get in touch. It may be that there were also asbestos lagged pipes in the old factory at Winterhay Lane and other sources of asbestos. If you have any information and used to work at Beales or Powrmatic please get in touch as you may have some helpful information. Record year for Funtasia Charity Ball THE fabulous Funtasia Charity Ball held at the Westlands Yeovil entertainment venue returned to the social calendar in May and came back with a bang! The annual charity ball had to be cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but organisers Russell and Louise Lee (pictured), of Funtasia Entertainment, were determined to see the ball make a comeback in spectacular style. And they were not disappointed. The last ball held in 2019 – the 12th annual event – raised a record £17,000 for St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice and Yeovil District Hospital’s Breast Cancer Unit Appeal. But Russell and Louise were blown away when the figures were totted up and the 13th Funtasia Ball, held on May 7, 2022, raised a staggering £22,000 for the hospital’s ongoing appeal to provide a one-stop-shop for breast cancer patients. “We’d like to thank everyone for their amazing support – this total is really fantastic,” said Russell. “There aren’t enough words to express how absolutely over the moon we are at having raised a staggering £22,000 at this year’s event.”

The breast cancer unit appeal will receive £20,000 while Diabetes UK and the Round Table Children’s Wish charity will also receive a donation. “We were hesitant on what we might achieve as it’s been a tough time out there for so many, but to raise £22,000 is amazing,” added Russell. “To everyone that attended, bought an auction lot, raffle ticket, tombola gift or played the casino tables and to all the wonderful prize donations and generous sponsorships and donations of money who couldn’t attend on the night – THANK YOU – from the bottom of our hearts.” The overall total raised from the charity balls is now well over £170,000. Raising money for the hospital’s breast cancer unit is particularly poignant for Russell as his own mother, Beth Davidson, died from the disease in September 2006 at the age of just 57. The first charity ball was held in April 2007 in her memory and have gone on to become hugely successful and enjoyable nights. There is no doubt that she would be hugely proud of what has been achieved. PHOTOS: Christine Jones.

Thank you to everyone – especially my lovely wife Faye, the fantastic IOUs, the incredible dancers from G’s Dance and the legend that is my father, the great Joe Santiago, who wowed the crowds once again.

CHURCH NEWS News from the churches in and around Yeovil

People of all faiths and no faiths and people of goodwill can learn from this WE have all just lived through history. Whether you are a fan, or not, of the monarchy, few would disagree that the longevity and endurance of our Queen is remarkable. To celebrate her Platinum Jubilee, a historic achievement that is unlikely to be repeated, many of us gathered with others in our road or wider community for events. These moments, after the experience of the last few years, were even more precious and appreciated. Having acceded to the throne after the death of her father, King George VI, in 1952, for 70 years Queen Elizabeth II has served faithfully and through great change. In 1952 a litre of fuel cost just 5p and a loaf of bread 3p. It is not just prices that have changed in this period of time. So much about life has changed. The Queen’s Christian faith has been significant throughout her life and she has frequently used her Christmas address to share her faith in Jesus.

In her Christmas address in 2014 the Queen said: “For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace… is an inspiration and an anchor in my life. A role model of reconciliation and forgiveness, he stretched out his hands in love, acceptance and healing. Christ’s example has taught me to seek to respect and value all people of whatever faith or none.” The Christian message has often been distorted, particularly by those in positions of power and authority. Here, it is presented with the recognition that respecting and valuing difference is a central element of the example that Jesus sets for his followers. Sometimes we mistake uniformity for unity. We are not all created to be the same, rather we need to find our unity through our acceptance and tolerance of difference. This is a difficult task. It is also true that we each need an anchor in our life. We all need that

something or someone that holds us where we need to be and prevents us from drifting away from where we need to be. What we choose to be than anchor is up to us. The Queen has chosen faith in Jesus Christ to be her anchor and, as the Archbishop of York said in his sermon at the Thanksgiving Service at St Paul’s Cathedral: “Thank you, for continuing to be faithful to the pledges you made 70 years ago. Thank you for showing us how service and faithfulness matter. People of all faiths and no faiths and people of goodwill can learn from this.” Rev Dan Crouch - vicar of Holy Trinity Church and Community Centre, Yeovil, and St Mary Magdalene Church, Barwick

Christians Against Poverty can help when money affects mental health IT is a sad truth that money troubles and mental ill-health can often go hand-inhand. According to the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, people with mental health problems are three and a half times more likely to experience problem debt. Almost one in five of the people who seek help through debt charity Christians Against Poverty say that mental ill-health was the main reason they fell into debt in the first place. And it’s a vicious cycle. Fear and worry about finances can exacerbate existing mental health problems, making it harder to get out of the predicament. So, what can be done to break the cycle? Here are some tips for looking after your mental health if you’re under pressure with money. Don’t ignore your feelings. Stress and anxiety, for example, are your body’s way of responding to pressure and they can sometimes be good things, as they alert you that you’re reaching your emotional limit. Ignore the warning and you’re likely to feel more and more anxious and irritable. Your mood, self-esteem, relationships and physical health may all be impacted. MIND, the mental health charity, can help you understand what you’re feeling and how to deal with it in a healthy way. Visit mind.org.uk. Talk to someone. This might be a friend or family member you trust, or a helpline. They may be able to point you in the direction of the support you need, or simply be a listening ear to allow you to release the burden you’ve been carrying. You can contact Samaritans about anything that’s getting you down by calling 116 123 or emailing jo@samaritans.

org. If you’re supporting someone who is experiencing a mental health problem and you need to talk, you can call SANEline on 0300 304 7000 from 4.30 to 10.30pm daily. If neither of these work for you, there are lots of other helplines and resources that can be found online with a quick search. You don’t have to suffer in silence. Split up big tasks. If a task seems overwhelming and you don’t know where to start, break it down into easily achievable chunks, and give yourself credit for completing each one. For example, if you want to put together a budget, your first step might be to simply make a list of the different things you spend money on each month. There’s more advice on budget planning at moneyhelper. org.uk. Make space for positivity. Whether you’re experiencing money worries or not, this is something we can all benefit from practising. It’s not about pretending that everything in your life is great, but taking the time to reflect on the good parts. Every night before you go to bed, get into the habit of writing down one thing that went well that day or something you’re grateful for. Don’t wait to seek help. Sadly, a quarter of CAP clients wait three years or more before seeking debt help, all the while facing mounting pressure on their mental health. There are several excellent organisations out there who provide free debt help, including CAP (capuk.org), StepChange (stepchange. org) and Citizens Advice (citizensadvice.org. uk). If you are not ready to talk about it just yet, there are helpful resources available online to help take the pressure off, like moneyhelper. org.uk and moneysavingexpert.com.

QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE – CELEBRATING 70 YEARS ON THE THRONE 20-PAGE SOUVENIOR PULL-OUT

Beacon lit on top of Wyndham Hill overlooking Yeovil A BEACON sitting proudly on top of Wyndham Hill overlooking Yeovil and surrounding area was lit to help mark the event going on across the nation to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. South Somerset District Council lit beacons for the Jubilee on the evening of Thursday, June 2, at Ham Hill Country Park and at the top of Wyndham Hill. The Beacons were just two of thousands which were lit in the UK and the Commonwealth and formed part of the official programme announced by Buckingham Palace for the Jubilee Weekend. In the UK alone, over 2,022 Beacons were lit by charities, communities and faith groups across the nation. Beacons were also lit in all 54 Commonwealth capitals and the Principal Beacon lighting took place in a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace on June 2. Bruno Peek, pageant master of The Queen’s Jubilee Platinum Beacons, said, “Building on a long tradition of lighting beacons to mark significant royal celebrations, thousands of beacons were lit across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. “They enabled local communities to join together to pay tribute to Her Majesty as part of the official programme of events.” And he added: “The Queen has lit up our lives for 70 years through her

dedicated service and commitment. We lit up the nation and the Commonwealth in her honour.” A council spokesman said: “We were proud to be part of this momentous celebration and delighted to see the Ham Hill and Wyndham beacons lighting up the skies for miles across the district to mark Her Majesty, The Queen’s 70th year reign as Monarch and Head of the Commonwealth.”

Beacon could be seen for miles around from the top of Ham Hill A BEACON was lit by the war memorial which sits proudly on top of the Ham Hill Country Park at Stoke-subHamdon. Countryside rangers would like to thank everyone who came and made it such a great night for the community. “It was great to see so many of people taking the time to walk up from the village that last night did Her Majesty proud,” said a spokesman. The lit beacon could be seen for miles around because of its terrific vantage point. PHOTOS: Courtesy of the Ham Hill Country Park’s social media Facebook page.

QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE – CELEBRATING 70 YEARS ON THE THRONE 20-PAGE SOUVENIOR PULL-OUT

Mayor lights a beacon outside St John's Church as jubilee celebrations begin THERE is a long and unbroken tradition in the UK of celebrating Royal Jubilees, weddings and Coronations with the lighting of beacons - usually on top of churches, mountains and cathedral towers, castle battlements and on the town and village greens. In 1897 beacons were lit to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. In 1977, 2002 and 2012, beacons commemorated the Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees of The Queen, and in 2016 Her Majesty’s 90th birthday.

So it was great that beacons were lit in and around Yeovil on June 2 to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – marking 70 years on the throne. The Love Yeovil group was asked by Yeovil Town Council to co-ordinate the lighting of a beacon on the green outside St John’s Church in the heart of the town. The beacon was lit at 9.45pm while before there was music from excellent trumpet player Luis Mertelo and singing from The Octagon Community Choir who

sang the A Song for the Commonwealth’ and other songs. Members of the HMS Heron Volunteer Band were also in attendance to play pieces of music to help in the build-up to the beacon being lit. Yeovil Art Space was at the event and provided a free artwork shop for the younger members of the community to join in with the beacon lighting. This provided an opportunity to create some willow artwork which could then be

added to the live willow jubilee crown, specially commissioned for the Jubilee. The Mayor, Cllr Evie Potts-Jones, officially opened the new Willow Jubilee Sculpture and also lit the beacon for Yeovil town centre. Further music was provided by the Abbey 104 radio team. As the beacon at St John’s was lit people could see in the distance the beacon burning on Wyndham Hill. PHOTOS: Christine Jones.

Milford pupils hold a street party in the playground MILFORD Infants’ School and PreSchool in Yeovil held a ‘street party’ on the playground to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. For the first time since Spring 2020, the whole school including the pre-schoolers came together for the celebrations in red, white and blue non-uniform with cakes and drinks provided by the Friends of Milford. The children sang the National Anthem and a Platinum Jubilee Song by SingKids to mark the occasion. Each class worked together to create a large piece of royal art work which was

then displayed on the fences around the playground. In the weeks leading up to the celebrations, children were invited to create a Queen Elizabeth portrait at home to enter into an art competition. Winners from each class were awarded a certificate and commemorative Jubilee pencil. The winning portraits and some of the large royal artwork have been on display at the Vienna Gallery in the Quedam Shopping Centre in Yeovil. A school spokesman said: “Thank you to all the staff and volunteers for such a wonderful day.” PHOTOS: Submitted.

Jubilee celebrations are very tiring - especially when you are only seven days old! QUEEN Elizabeth II is 96 years young and has just commemorated her Platinum Jubilee – 70 years on the throne and monarch to the United Kingdom and Commonwealth. Little baby Emilia was just seven days old when this photo was taken as she celebrated – albeit a bit sleepy – the Queen’s Jubilee dressed in red, white and blue. Many thanks to proud mum Lisa Cairncross for sending us this lovely photo – arguably the cutest Jubilee picture of the weekend!

QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE – CELEBRATING 70 YEARS ON THE THRONE 20-PAGE SOUVENIOR PULL-OUT

Pupils put on a fantastic exhibition in honour of the Queen CREATIVE children at All Saints Primary School at Montacute put on a wonderful display of artwork to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Pupils from throughout the school contributed to an exhibition which people were allowed to view on the final day before the half-term break. As well as letting the children show off their artistic skills in painting, drawing and making some very realistic-looking artificial cake – the work also helped them improve their history knowledge as they looked at some of the events which have taken place during the Queen’s life and her 70 years on the throne. Yeovil Press editor Steve Sowden and

photographer Christine Jones went along to look at the children’s work. “When we walked into the school hall and I saw a lovely array of cake I did wonder if anyone would notice if I took a slice, but it was only until I got up close that I realised that it was artificial – very clever and very realistic,” he said. “I’m sure the Queen would have been most impressed and amused at some of the portraits the children had drawn of her!” Headteacher Sharon Bowditch said the children had taken great enjoyment in getting involved in the exhibition and learning more about the Queen. If you can't get the Queen to visit your school, inviting the Mayor is the next best option THE Mayor of Yeovil, Cllr Evie PottsJones, was a popular visitor when she dropped in to see staff and pupils at Preston Primary School to find out more about they had been doing to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The school based on the Abbey Manor estate in Yeovil was beautifully decorated to mark the Queen’s 70 years on the throne and children had been busy drawing pictures of Her Majesty and making crowns. The children had also been learning

about the Queen through the decades and finding out more about her history, as well as learning songs and putting together class presentations. Cllr Potts-Jones said: “I spent a terrific afternoon at Preston Primary School – it was really good fun and great to meet all the children and staff.” Children took great delight on trying on the Mayor’s chain of office. The Mayor was accompanied on the visit by Yeovil Press editor Steve Sowden and photographer Christine Jones. PHOTOS: Christine Jones.

QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE – CELEBRATING 70 YEARS ON THE THRONE 20-PAGE SOUVENIOR PULL-OUT

Platinum Jubilee party is a big success as Yeovil celebrates the Queen's 70 years

THOUSANDS of people converged on the Yeovil Recreation Ground to enjoy a day of live entertainment to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Yeovil Town Council laid on the event which took place on Friday, June 3, from midday to 10pm with music and dancing held on two stages. The Mayor of Yeovil, Cllr Evie PottsJones, officially opened the party on the main stage where the Octagon Choir kicked-off the day’s events. Also appearing on the main stage were The Disciples, Marcus Sangiovanni, Yeovil Ukulele Club, HMS Heron Royal Navy Volunteer Band, The IOUs, The Dale Fender Band, Live Wired, Tom & The Clementynes and finishing with Electric Peach. On a second stage there were performances from the Yeovil Stompers Line Dance Club, The Dance Factory, Razzamataz, Keri Hill Dance, Sarah Lowery, Helen Laxton School of Dance and the Phoenix Voices. The day was greatly enjoyed by those who attended although the event’s popularity caused some problems as a large number of people had to queue to get in to the site which had been fenced in and it was left at one stage to “one in, one out.” Due to licensing and insurance reasons a capacity limit of 3,000 people was put on the event and that limit had been reached pretty early on in the afternoon. Yeovil Press editor Steve Sowden, who was part of the working group looking at

the organising of the event, said: “The team at Yeovil Town Council worked extremely hard to make sure this event went ahead and I can’t thank them enough for their efforts – it really was a great day for the community to enjoy. “Hindsight is a wonderful thing, however, and I’m sure that if something like this is held again in the future then things will be put in place to allow for a bigger capacity, more drink and eating outlets on site along with more rubbish bins. “I know for a fact that alongside the

town council staff the event was run with a very small team of volunteers and so we should be thanking them for all their hard work.” A heavy downpour in mid-afternoon did ease the crowd numbers as soggy people decided to leave and head for home. A Yeovil Town Council spokesman said: “Thank you to all the staff (we have a very small team at the council), volunteers, performers, community groups and vendors who, without, the event simply could not have happened.

“Huge thanks also to Emerald First Aid Training and TRU Event Security and Consultancy and their professional advice and service provided during both the organising and the event itself.” The spokesman thanked those who had already given feedback on the event and said that the “learning from this major event will be used on any future events.” PHOTOS: Pictures from the Platinum Jubilee party held at Yeovil Recreation Ground appear on Pages 37-44 and were taken by Christine Jones unless otherwise stated.

Anniversary for the Wyvern Jubilee Morris team THE Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations over the weekend of June 2-5 were also special for a group of Yeovil-based Morris Dancers. The Wyvern Jubilee Morris team was formed for the Jubilee year in 1977 – the Queen’s 25th year on the throne – when it was originally called Westland Jubilee Morris and based at the Westland sports club. Originally all the members worked at Westland Helicopters and the 1977 Jubilee badge is still part of the group’s kit. The team also had an associated woman’s group called Queen’s Delight – named after the Morris dance of the same name. And in the team’s first year they danced for the Jubilee street parties in Yeovil. “By 1980 we had moved practice venues and because there were more outsiders than Westlands people in the group we changed our name to Wyvern Jubilee Morris,” said a spokesman. Sadly the Queen’s Delight team folded

in the 1990s. There are two original members still with the team. Chris, the original musician is still playing for the team, and Peter Clemo who is still dancing. The Wyvern Jubilee Morris team turned the clock back 45 years on Sunday (June 5) and returned to the site of its first dance – Monks Dale in Yeovil. But as our photos show the weather was much kinder back in 1977 than it was on Sunday, June 5, when the heavens opened in emphatic fashion.

Rebecca privileged to be part of Carnival cart pageant

RAINY weather did not dampen the enthusiasm for neighbours living in Westbourne Grove, Yeovil, when they held a street party to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on Sunday (June 5). Around 100 people turned out to raise a glass to congratulate Her Majesty for her 70 years on the throne. Many thanks to Caroline Wright for sending us these photos.

YEOVIL Carnivalite, Rebecca Baker, took part in the amazing Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant in London on June 5 as part of the team that brought the wonder of Carnival to a worldwide stage. The unique Jubilation cart was invited to take part in the pageant as part of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations. The route through London started at Whitehall and then turned under Admiralty Arch and continued past The Mall before finishing outside Buckingham Palace around the Queen Victoria Memorial. The impressive Carnival cart has taken months of work to build and has been completed with the help of around 200 Carnivalites from 17 different Carnival clubs in Somerset involved. While there was a team on the cart dancing to the 1980s hit song Celebration by The Overtones, many others danced ahead of the cart including Yeovil’s Rebecca. She has her own Carnival club, Spirit CC, as a walking entry, although she has

also been a member of the Ilminsterbased Gemini Carnival Club as well. “It was an absolutely incredible experience and I was privileged to be involved,” she said. “It was great to have all the rival Carnival clubs joining forces to produce something amazing and show everyone what Carnival has to offer.” The cart celebrates the pomp and splendour of the monarchy and features the crown, beefeaters and the royal coat of arms. Flagbearers carried the flags of the four nations and the Commonwealth is also represented on the cart.

A JUBILEE party was held at Tintinhull village hall on Friday, June 3, with around 90 people tucking into a sumptuous afternoon tea. During the afternoon they were able to enjoy photographic and film footage of Tintinhull “fun” from years gone by. Denny Robbins, event organiser and chairman of Tintinhull Local History Group, said: “Sadly around 20 people were unable to attend and they each received ‘picnic boxes’ so were able to be with us in spirit if not in the flesh. “The school children wanted an

involvement and so made cards to go out with the boxes to say how much the recipients had been missed and all attending had the opportunity to take a budding Picasso home with them to thank them for coming. “This couldn’t have happened without several months of organisation, the TLHG permitting use of their archives and the willing assistance of around 22 other folk, not to mention ‘him indoors’, on the day.” PHOTOS: Courtesy of Denny Robbins.

MANY thanks to Bob Healey for sending us these great Platinum Jubilee celebrations held at Barwick & Stoford Recreation Field. A free cream tea was available for those that attended as well as free ice cream for all the children, while Rev Dan Crouch enjoyed his time in the stocks! A children’s entertainer and live music kept the crowds entertained.

AN oak tree planted on Ilchester sportsfield will commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee for generations to come. Gerry Masters, a former chairman of Ilchester Town Trust, the charity which owns the field, was invited to do the spade work, and with good cause. He was described by Trust member Kay Dobson as the: “guiding light” of the committee which fought so hard to win planning permission for the sportsfield and a pavilion more than 25 years ago. He and his team had to raise thousands of pounds to pay for special surveys alone - because an Iron Age enclosure lies under part of the site. The 2,000-yearold structure, hidden under layers of silt, is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Mr Masters and a team of volunteers

launched Sunday car boot sales to help fund-raise and they continue to this day. Graham Mottram, current chairman of the Trust said: “The Royal family suggested that planting oaks was a good thing to do to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Hopefully generations to come will play sport by our jubilee oak and grow and flourish like the tree itself.” The planting was followed by a street party in High Street, arranged by the parish council, Town Trust and Ilchester and District Community Association. The parish council and IDCA presented a commemorative slate plaque to the Town Trust. It will be placed in the patio garden at the Town Hall. The presentation was made by councillor Steve Marsh, vicechairman of the parish council.

Fantastic car show revving up to return to historic Sherborne Castle THE Atkins Ferrie Wealth Management Classic and Supercar show at Sherborne Castle has become a firm fixture in the calendar of events in Sherborne and organisers are delighted that after a two year gap they are able to bring this show back to the prestigious Sherborne Castle in 2022. Regarded as one of the premier classics and supercar shows in the South of England, the 16th show in 2019 had upwards of 2,000 cars on display, from veterans to the latest supercars. The 2019 show was also the sixth show run by Rotary as a charity fundraising event. During those six years the show grew significantly in size, and had distributed in excess of £233,000 to charities located within a 30-mile radius of the show site at Sherborne Castle. For all of us the past two years have been a time when everything was on hold and now we are able to look forward again we find that the world has changed. But the car show has a history of re-

inventing itself and organisers are delighted to announce a new organising team comprising not only Rotary members from Somerset and Dorset, but also Lions and Round Table members bringing new ideas and enthusiasm to face the challenges of a post-Covid world. This team is focussing on working with local businesses and suppliers and on environmental sustainability. The show will continue to distribute all excess income to local charities through its own charity, Sherborne Classic Car CIO, and since the event is run entirely by volunteers the organisers are able to keep costs down and maximise charity funding. The main beneficiary of this year’s show will be Children’s Hospice South West. This year’s event at Sherborne Castle takes place on Sunday, July 17. For more information – look at the advert on Page 53.

KING ARTHUR: THE LAST BAGUETTE

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: CHAPTERHOUSE

SAT 6 AUG | 2:30PM

SAT 27 AUG | 7PM

A story of the old world, with knights, wizards, mist and magic. This fun and farcical adventure is an anarchic and anachronistic re-telling of the Arthurian Legend with live music, physical comedy and lo-fi acrobatics.

Take a step back in time as we meet Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters. Whilst their interfering mother engineers various courtships, sisters Elizabeth and Jane must pursue their own quest for true love.

SAT 29 JUN | 7PM

One of the UK’s finest touring theatre companies present this great play as Shakespeare first saw it performed - in the open air, by an all male cast and with Elizabethan costumes, music and dance.

Festival vibe comes to Somerton

Pen Mill Panthers just miss out on county cup glory

PEN Mill Panthers Under-14s could hold their heads high despite falling to a 3-2 defeat after extra time in the final of the Somerset Football Association’s Lewin Cup. The match with Whitchurch Under14s, of Bristol, was played at Street FC on May 15 and the Panthers came back from 2-0 down in dramatic style to send the game into extra time. Whitchurch had dominated the early exchanges and were 2-0 up at the interval and they could have been further ahead had they taken their chances. Pen Mill held out in the second-half and had keeper Lloyd Cox to thank for an amazing one-handed save which prevented Whitchurch from taking a 3-0 and probable unassailable lead. But the game was turned on its head as Pen Mill scored two goals within a minute. As the game entered the final ten minutes Pen Mill were given a lifeline when awarded a penalty by the referee which was duly converted by Connor

Mapletoft. And then from the re-start Pen Mill immediately broke forward as Liam Knights raced clear of the Whitchurch defence and expertly put the ball beyond the hands of the diving keeper. Whitchurch went from a solid position and in control of proceedings to a team which had been left shell-shocked, while Pen Mill suddenly had that extra spring and zip in their step. But Pen Mill failed to take advantage and the game finished all-square at 2-2 and into extra-time of ten minutes each way. Whitchurch suddenly found themselves back in front after converting a penalty not long after the extra-time had started. The match was played for long periods in driving rain and it proved energy sapping for the players and Pen Mill could not find that elusive equaliser to take the game to a penalty shoot-out. But the management team of Simon Brimble, Brad Goodman and Lee

Mapletoft were full of pride for their players come the end. Pen Mill Panthers squad: 1 Lloyd Cox; 2 Harry Nelson; 3 Harry Brimble; 4 Jakub Filipecki; 5 Connor Mapletoft; 6 Louie Goodman; 7 Tom Boyland (captain);

Ilchester Spitfires down gallant Pen Mill Predators in youth final THE Ilchester Spitfires Under-12s claimed the High Holborne Shield during an entertaining final played at Yeovil Town Football Club’s Huish Park stadium. A good-sized crowd of around 400-500 attended the game – played on May 12 – and watched the action unfold as the Ilchester team ran out 5-0 winners over their gallant opponents from Pen Mill Raptors Under-12s in a match which lasted 60 minutes. The two sides were evenly-matched in the opening exchanges, but Ilchester soon began to turn the screw and put the Pen Mill defence and keeper Ralph Bakam under pressure. That pressure eventually told on 22 minutes when William Parsons netted to break the deadlock and give Ilminster a deserved lead. And soon afterwards Tommy-Lee McGinty made it 2-0 to Ilchester and there could have been more goals before the interval. Any hopes Pen Mill might have had of getting back into the game faded soon after the restart on 32 minutes when Oliver Watts scored with a long range shot which went over Bakam and dipped into the net to give Ilchester a 3-0 advantage. But Pen Mill kept battling with midfield

playmaker Jovan Wamani, in particular, trying to work his magic to unravel a well-drilled Ilchester side. Ilchester made sure of getting their hands on the shield on 50 minutes when McGinty scored his second of the game with a well-taken goal. And then on 56 minutes Parsons netted a delightful header when he met a perfect cross to make it 5-0. Yeovil Press editor Steve Sowden, who was at the game, said: “Congratulations to Ilchester Spitfires on a great performance and deservedly winning the High Holborne Shield. “Pen Mill Predators definitely played their part in a well-contested game and they can be proud of their achievements in reaching the final.” Squad line-ups (as per the match programme): Pen Mill FC Raptors Under12s: 1 Ralph Bakam; 2 Afif Hussain; 3 George Vittles; 4 Isaac Bailey (captain); 5 Lennon Cain; 6 Archie Ormrod; 7 Ellis Coy; 8 Jovan Wamani; 9 Alex Kleszczewski; 10 Kaden Williams; 11 Jack Green; 12 George Reid; 14 Bobi Evans; 15 Shay Fry; 16 Xavier Przeorek. Legends match was a very special day at Huish Park ANYONE who was at Huish Park on May 14 for the Yeovil Town Legends v South West Legends charity match will know what a special day it was. Nearly 2,000 people attended the game at Huish Park to help raise money for the Adam Stansfield Foundation. The Yeovil side featured many of the FA Trophy, Nationwide Conference and League One winning teams of 20 years ago. Gary Johnson’s Yeovil Legends XI came from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 thanks to a goal from Kevin Gall, a Terry Skiverton penalty and a late equaliser from Adam Stansfield’s own son Taylor.

Many people have thanked organisers Kevin Gall and Abby Carter for helping to put on an excellent afternoon of entertainment. There was a printed programme available on the day which completely sold out! Now the organisers have made the souvenir programme available digitally for anyone who may have missed out. Drop YTFCGame@gmail.com an email as you will be sent a rather large file with all 50-odd pages of content including interviews with many of the legends on show. PHOTOS: Christine Jones.

GLOVERS GLORY

The name's Bond, Fred Bond - Father of Yeovil Town FC YEOVIL Town fan and a keen historian of all things about the Glovers, MICHAEL WEST, goes back to the late 1800s when the foundation stones of the football club we know and love today were being created and looks at the man who made it happen. AS Yeovil Town Football Club celebrates the club being 125 years old, it is the perfect time to honour a man whose vision, hard work and dedication enabled Glovers fans all these years later to support their beloved football club. That man was Fred Bond. Frederick J. Bond was born in Ash near Yeovil in 1873, with his parents being William Bond, originally from Axminster, and Ann. Like his Father, William, Fred was a farmer. They farmed the meadows known as Little Lyde Farm with his two brothers Henry and William Jr which were situated in what is now known as the Sunningdale area of town, just off Lyde Road. He was educated at the prestigious Kingston School in Yeovil where no doubt he gained his first taste of the association game, under the guidance of John Aldridge, owner of the school. His father, William, was more of a rugby man and had played for the town side, yet in later

Fred Bond.

70

Yeovil Casuals Reserves pictured in 1896 – one year after the club was formed, much down to the hard work of Fred Bond.

life took up the association game playing for Yeovil, even playing against his son, Fred in 1889. Fred it would appear, from an early age, was a very talented footballer, playing against men’s teams from the age of 14 as his name popped up in match reports and teams all over town. One match report even had him turning out for Wincanton. Positioned as a half back, he was known as a hardworking, tough tackler with a terrific and powerful shot. More to the point, at that time, he was a gentleman on the pitch and off it. At just 18 he was the captain of the Yeovil team, showing maturity way beyond his years, staying skipper until 1904 and only then stepping down to give himself more time with the running of the club. His association with the club lasted way into the 1920s and even after that he attended matches as often as possible including the famous giant-killing Sunderland FA Cup match in January 1949. Once while playing against Radstock he protected an opposing player from

a beating by a ‘screaming mob’ after being sent off. Famously he once took his team to Devizes in 1901, only for half the team to catch the wrong connection at Trowbridge. Captain Fred arrived at Devizes’ Quakers Walk ground with just five players. He happily accepted when Devizes refused to cancel the game. With just Fred and four other Yeovil players they took the field to take on the 11 of Devizes. They lost 15-0! Fred, it was reported, tried from the first to the last in a hopeless cause! For the record, the Devizes defenders wore coats to keep warm. Not afraid to speak his mind, always with a sense of what was right and wrong, Fred would in 1895, lay the path to what we know and love today as Yeovil Town Football Club. His single mindedness and ambition for a Yeovil club free of the ties of rugby opened up association football in the town. It is no exaggeration to say without him we would not be supporting the team today or if we were it would be a very different beast.

His organisational skills after he founded Yeovil Casuals enabled the club to run a profit for consecutive years at the start which gave it the springboard to go forward. When many teams of that time faded away, Yeovil grew, taking it to becoming the premier football club in Somerset, where it still proudly sits. That growth was down to not just one man, however, although the biggest contribution is on the part of Frederick Bond. He gave Yeovil fans a club to be proud off and also a club that at times throughout its 125 years became one of the most talked about teams in football. Fred died in his beloved Yeovil in 1958 aged 86 years old. One would imagine if you hunted the corridors of Yeovil Town Football Club today, no trace of him could be found; such a sad testimony to a man who was the Father of Yeovil Town Football club. Turn to Pages 33-40 of this edition of the Yeovil Press for an eight-page pull-out looking back at the 125 years of Yeovil Town Football Club.

FAN ZONE A-TO-Z 1-TO-11 J is for Graham JOHNSTONE! Welcome to the tenth instalment of the Fan Zone A-to-Z 1-to-11 feature. Each month we will spotlight a Yeovil Town fan in surname alphabetical order and ask them 11 questions relating to their support of the Glovers. If you want to be included in a future edition of the Fan Zone please get in touch by emailing Yeovil Press editor Steve Sowden at yeovilpress@gmail.com. We could well be interested in hearing from any Yeovil fan with a surname beginning with the letter Z! Photo: Graham Johnstone. 01: How many years have you been supporting Yeovil Town FC? Around 42 years – on and off. 02: What was the first game you can remember watching Yeovil Town FC? I’m sure my dad had taken me to a few games before which I can barely remember, but the first game I can properly recall was Yeovil’s FA Cup Third Round match with Norwich City at Huish in 1980.

03: Who has been your all-time favourite Yeovil Town player and your favourite manager? I was living abroad for quite a few years during the 1990s and early 2000s, but came back just before Gary Johnson took over as manager at Huish Park the first time around – so one of the best signings he made was Gavin Williams, a truly skilful player. And favourite manager – you can’t look any further than Gary Johnson. 04: What is the best Yeovil Town game you have watched? When Yeovil Town won the Nationwide Conference at Doncaster Rovers in 2003 – without kicking a ball – was a great day from start to finish. I will never forget that moment when the Chester City score came through to confirm we were Conference champions before our game at Doncaster kicked-off.

Gavin William. Turn to Questions 3 and 11.

05: What has been the biggest disappointment for you as a Yeovil Town fan? Not making it to have a second season in The Championship. I think with a little bit of luck along the way in that 2013-14 season we might have sneaked another season.

footballer – alive or dead – from the world of football who you would have liked to have seen play for Yeovil Town, who would it be and why? I’ve always liked the stars of Brazil – so it would have to be Pele, Zico or Ronaldo; someone like that.

06: What has been your favourite goal scored by Yeovil Town? There have been so many! But I suppose if I had to pick one it would be Paddy Madden’s goal at Wembley in the 2013 League One PlayOff Final against Brentford.

08: Favourite away ground and why? I haven’t really got one; but I wouldn’t mind seeing Yeovil Town play at Wembley again!

07: If you could name any one

09: If you won the National Lottery jackpot and bought Yeovil Town FC – what is the first thing you would do (within reason!)? Where do you start? I think building revenue streams away from the football side of things would be important, so I’d look at improving the facilities for the fans which could be used seven-days a week. 10: What are your hopes and aspirations for the future? You never really know what is around the corner for Yeovil Town, so I would personally like to see stability and then start to build for the future. From small acorns grow big oaks – so they say.

Brazilian striker Zico. Turn to Question 7.

Cyclists return to Huish Park after successful charity bike ride A GROUP of Yeovil Town fans arrived back at Huish Park after having tackled a 500-mile bike ride in aid of charity. Around 50 Glovers’ supporters and keen cyclists remembered the life of former Yeovil skipper Lee Collins who died in March 2021 at the age of 32. An inquest in late summer heard that the father and highly thought of defender had taken his own life. During a professional career that spanned 14 years, Collins made more than 400 appearances, starting at

Wolverhampton Wanderers, before spells at Port Vale, Northampton Town, Mansfield Town, Forest Green Rovers and Yeovil. The Get Pedalling 22 Miles4Minds challenge saw the cyclists tackling 500 miles and taking in Collins’ various clubs along the way. The cyclists were joined for the final leg of the journey by former Yeovil Town manager and captain Terry Skiverton and Collins’ partner Rachel Gibbons.

Wednesday, May 18, 2022 THE 15th anniversary of when Yeovil Town pulled-off one of the most astonishing victories in the club’s history – the League One Play-Off SemiFinal with Nottingham Forest. Yeovil had lost the first leg 2-0 at Huish Park, so travelled to the City Ground on Friday, May 18, 2007, knowing they faced a mountain. But in a night that nobody will remember Yeovil won 5-2 on the night after extra-time to give the Glovers a 5-4 success and with it a route through to the final at the new Wembley Stadium against Blackpool.

Team that day: Steve Mildenhall, Andy Lindegaard, Nathan Jones, Scott Guyett, Terrell Forbes, Anthony Barry, Chris Cohen (sub. Kalala 74), Arron Davies, Wayne Gray, Marcus Stewart, Lee Morris. Subs not used: Mark Lynch, Matthew Rose, Martin Brittain, Darryl Knights. Yeovil could not repeat that form in the final and lost 2-0 to Blackpool. In a SSDC statement on Friday afternoon, the authority said that the deal, understood to be worth £2.8m, was done and it would now rent the stadium and “core land” around it back to the club under a 30-year lease. The council said the deal would “help with the club’s survival, generate a new rental income, while protecting our ratepayers from loss or excessive risk.” Friday, May 20, 2022 IN unsurprising news it was announced that former Yeovil Town defender Luke Wilkinson had signed a two-year deal with former manager Darren Sarll at National League rivals Woking. Staunton, speaking to the club’s website, said: “I’m delighted that it’s confirmed that I’m staying here. “I came here to start something, unfortunately we haven’t done it in the last two years, but I’m excited to continue being part of the journey.” He had been in charge of first-team affairs for one game only – the last National League game of the season at Altrincham; but has now become the first player to commit his future to the club following the appointment of Chris Hargreaves as manager. Hargreaves said: “I’m delighted that Josh has committed his future to the football club. “Josh has established himself as a real leader during his spell here and shown great quality whilst on the pitch. “I’m looking forward to working with him and send my congratulations to both him and his family.” Sunday, May 22, 2022 YEOVIL Town manager Chris Hargreaves said that it was vital for the club to look at developing their own players. “Youth development is vital,” he told the club’s official website. “I said to the players that want to stay at the club, I want to improve them as all coaches and managers do. “We want to help them go and play as high as they can. It’s something that is very important to

me, they have to produce for the club but we hope to be able to help them along their footballing journey. “We have to be as sustainable as possible, so we need to develop our younger players and if the rewards are right for the club and for the player, then brilliant. That has to be a major part of it because producing players is a big part of what a club is about.” Monday, May 23, 2022 FORMER Yeovil Town loanee and Millwall fullback Dan Moss has teamed-up with former Glovers boss Darren Sarll at National League rivals Woking. He will sign a two-year deal on July 1 and join up with not only his old Yeovil boss, but also former Glovers team-mate Luke Wilkinson who has also moved to the Surrey outfit. Tuesday, May 24, 2022 POLICE gave a 29-year-old man from Yeovil a three-year football banning order following an incident at the FA Cup match between the Glovers and Weymouth back on October 16, 2021. A police statment read that the supporter was convicted of possessing a firework, flare or pyrotechnic item “in relation his actions at Yeovil Town’s game at home to Weymouth on October 16, 2021. “A three-year football banning order was given to him.” The game finished in a 1-1 draw with Yeovil going on to win the replay. Friday, May 27, 2022 YEOVIL Town announced that supporter and businessman Stuart Robins had become a shareholder and board member of the club. He became the first person to join the club’s board after chairman Scott Priestnall announced plans to bring in new directors. Club chairman Scott Priestnall said: “Bringing Stuart in to the club can only be a positive move for us. Not only is he a lifelong supporter, but he brings with him a wealth of business experience. “When I said I wanted to formulate a board that could bring about a shared vision for the club’s future, I could not have wished for anyone more passionate and dedicated to seeing the club succeed as Stuart.” Sunday, May 29, 2022 THE planned bid to take over Yeovil Town led by former Cardiff City director Julian Jenkins had come to an unsuccessful conclusion. A series of tweets posted by Damien Singh, chief financial officer of online graphic design tool Canva, confirmed the bid by Simul Sports Group was off. A statement read: “Regrettably after a protracted period of due diligence during which we have expended significant time, energy and financial resources, we have had to cease our efforts to secure ownership of Yeovil Town Football Club. “We unfortunately could not conclude our negotiations despite a series of recent offers with funds placed on our solicitors account. “Yeovil Town is a special club, I’ve visited Huish Park on a number of occasions and have family in the area. We had big plans to restore the glory days and footballing pride to the community. But disappointingly that has come to an end for us today. “Myself and the other members of the group, Darren DeLandro and Marc Bircham, acknowledge that this is a difficult period for the fans and we want to wish the Glovers all the best for the future. Council buys Yeovil Town FC property to help safeguard club's future SOUTH Somerset District Council has completed the purchase and leaseback transaction of Huish Park and associated land of Yeovil Town Football Club. The council’s District Executive committee approved the purchase as part of a proposal to not only ease financial pressures on the club but also to benefit communities across the district. The capital budget, and the funding for this, totalling £2.8m was approved by the council’s Full Council in February 2022. The club’s short-term financial concerns have been caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, with crowds initially prevented from attending National League matches for public safety and then continuing to be limited by Covid-19 restrictions. While the club sought to reduce its cost base, the remaining costs led to significant financial issues. The proposal gives Yeovil Town the option to buy back the land the club occupies in the future when its financial outlook has improved. Council leader, Cllr Val Keitch, said: “This is a significant deal and it is certainly not a decision we have taken lightly. However, we strongly believe it is in the best interests of South Somerset and its communities. “Yeovil Town is the only professional football club in Somerset and it makes a significant contribution to both the local economy and more widely in terms

of community, education and local civic pride. “This includes the community impact of the club’s charity, the Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust, which strives to make a positive difference for all through sport and learning for thousands of local people through its work with local schools and its own Soccer Schools.” Cllr John Clark, portfolio holder for economic development, said: “It is important to remember that it is not the council’s intention nor desire to play any part in the running of the football club, which will remain a matter for the shareholders. “Our interest is to help with the club’s survival, generate a new rental income, while protecting our ratepayers from loss or excessive risk. “I want to thank our officers who have worked so diligently in ensuring we protected taxpayers from any risk while also working successfully to support Yeovil Town Football Club.” The club approached South Somerset District Council regarding the difficulties it faced during the pandemic back in autumn 2020. Our officers investigated options which benefited both the club and South Somerset residents. While the proposal was agreed in December 2020, the status of the property being registered as two assets of community value meant there was a pause in the purchase process while the

statutory process was followed. Some interim funding was made available to the club by the Government and Sport England which deferred the need for this intervention. That time allowed the club to work on interest from other parties to acquire the club but these did not lead to a transaction. The details of the deal: The council has purchased the entire freehold and leasehold property and land interests held by Yeovil Town Football Club in the Huish Park ground. These areas are simultaneously leased back to the club. Part of the purchase price has been applied to securing the release of restrictive covenants that affect the title to the property.

Crucially, South Somerset District Council will not own or be becoming a shareholder of the football club. Instead, Yeovil Town FC has become a tenant of the council. A council spokesman said: “The transaction that has been completed gives the club a chance to improve its prospects for recovery and the structure of the deal enables the club to continue to pursue the potential for developments at the Huish Park site, in order to secure its position in the long-term. “The council, in return, helps to promote these important ambitions while the council’s revenue budget revives a new net income stream from the rental.”

Council has shown fantastic commitment to Yeovil Town says chairman YEOVIL Town chairman Scott Priestnall has said that the deal secured with South Somerset District Council will provide “valuable funds” for the club. After more than a year of discussions, the council and Yeovil Town FC have concluded a sale and lease back deal for the stadium and land at Huish Park. Yeovil Town chairman, Scott Priestnall, said: “The deal provides valuable funds to the Club, in what has been a very difficult period financially and operationally. We utilised all government schemes available to us during the pandemic, but unfortunately those funds did not meet our ongoing cash requirement, never mind allow us to grow. “When I first came into the club, I saw the opportunity to grow this already amazing club into an organisation off the pitch that could provide revenues all week, not just on match days. While

76

I had very positive conversations with local planning, developers and funding partners, the pandemic delayed our options to grow, at the same time causing huge financial difficulties to our ongoing operations. “There is and has always been a massive opportunity to develop the club’s infrastructure, but over the last 30 years the custodians of this club have never been able to put a plan together that works for all related parties. “I believe, thanks to the hard work and vision of our MP, local councillors, and officers of South Somerset District Council, we are now in a position to not only sustain this club financially but also move forward with a viable plan to grow our infrastructure off the pitch, to help with gaining future success on the pitch. “The funds will help pay for costs incurred during the pandemic such as

deferred payments with some of our key partners and deferred salaries to our incredible staff and players who accepted a reduction in wages during lockdown when the club could not operate. “I thank each and every one of them for their commitment and patience to allow us to get to where we are now. “The council has showed fantastic commitment to this football club and special thanks should be given for their understanding and patience over the last year while the Club explored all other possibilities for investment, including the potential takeover that has dominated the Club for the past nine months. “In addition, the funds will also allow us to engage contractors and consultants to put forward a planning application for the site as well as allowing us to sensibly invest in required maintenance work and our playing squad. Fundamentally, it has

also allowed us to negotiate and remove the well-publicised restrictive covenants held over the site since the football club made Huish Park its home.” PHOTO: Scott Priestnall.

New boss gets straight to work on getting ready for the 2022-23 season YEOVIL Town confirmed the appointment of Chris Hargreaves as manager on May 18. The 50-year-old arrived just days after Yeovil Town’s National League season came to an end with a victory at Altrincham, and he has got straight to work, watching back games & speaking to the current squad. “I’ve either in person, or on my laptop watched the last 10 to 12 games, so I’ve got a fair idea (of the players),” said the boss. “I’ve met all of them either individually for a chat or over the phone. They’re a fantastic group of lads, I know people say that about most groups of players but the genuinely are. “I hope we can work together with them and improve some of the younger players because that’s what my background has been in player development. “I’m looking forward to getting the

group of players together.” Most recently, Hargreaves held the role as academy manager at Bristol Rovers, but he held many roles across the football department at the club, which puts him in good stead for his first jump into first team management in seven years. “I’ve been in three roles at Rovers, so I saw all the types of players you work with, whether that the U23’s, the first team as assistant manager or younger as the academy manager,” he said. “The plan at clubs has to be sustainable, to try and bring up players or improve players that you get in, either successful for us or financially viable. “Player development is a big thing, it’s something I really enjoy, but at the end of the day it has to be the right character that comes through.” Despite massive budgets at the higher end of the table, Yeovil Town have had strong record against those sides. The

grit and determination shown by the existing group of players has meant a strong connection between the players & fans has grown, something Hargreaves is keen to encourage. “There are massive expectations at clubs across the league, largely due to the budgets they’ve got. We’ve seen that this season with clubs buying players for £300,000 and rumoured wages. “I can’t affect any of that, I can only affect this group of players, because one thing is for sure, I want the players to give it absolutely everything so there’s that connection that’s already there continues.” A number of players have renewed contracts for another year, while some

have left the club – turn to Pages 74-75 for more details. PHOTO: Christ Hargreaves – Yeovil Town’s new manager.
