My thoughts are with everyone involved with Milford Junior School in Yeovil – the teachers, pupils and parents. To see the school building closed on safety grounds has presented major problems, but I hope the transition to the special arrangements which have been put into place will go as smoothly as possible. The building might be closed, but the name of Milford Junior School goes on!

that I will have to close - I will have to retire a few years early
YEOVIL people broke out into applause on August 10 after plans for a new homeless hostel likened to a “drug dealer’s paradise” were unanimously refused.
These same residents are now celebrating after the plans were roundly refused by the council’s Area South committee after more than three hours of deliberation.Thecouncil will now work with BCHA to find alternative, smaller sites which can provide the best outcome for homeless people in the district.
Controversial Acacia Lodge plans are unanimously thrown out by council

The organisation applied to take over the former Acacia Hodge care home on the A30 Hendford Hill, relocating all its current residents to the new site – plans which have generated considerable backlash from Yeovil residents.
“It is the older generation who suffer most from perceived or actual crime or disorder. Your contempt for the older generation is absolutely shameful.”
“Even Martin Hancock, CEO of BCHA, advocated smaller housing units in their Clock Tower project in Bournemouth. This is not the best solution for the homeless.”
“The people of Yeovil have come out and made the point eloquently and articulately. We should reject this on good, sound planning grounds.”
Cllr Kaysar Hussain added: “This looks like we are setting up a Shawshank Redemption-style jail or something. It will look like a concentration camp – I’m not going to support it.”
The property has been commercially marketed since January 2019, but the council reports there has been “no interest” in reopening the site as a care home. The Pathways site on Newton Road, which can house up to 30 people, is deemed “no longer fit for purpose” by BCHA.While the BCHA has been working hard to support residents over the last three years, the organisation feels that the current premises can no longer meet
“If you think the fear of crime is unfounded, the number of times the police was called by Pathways over a three-year period was 770 times.”
The plans for Acacia Lodge would have seen them house 39 residents at the former care home, with the possibility of expansion in the future.
“Nobody wants it – not the community, local businesses, the town council, our MP, and the homeless people we’ve spoken to. Not even the applicants –they’d rather have a different option.
The Bournemouth Churches Housing Association currently operates the Pathways facility on Newton Road in Yeovil town centre, under a contract with South Somerset District Council.
The council’s district executive committee voted in June 2021 to provide up to £390,000 towards the purchase of Acacia Lodge, with the remaining funds being provided by BCHA and Homes England. However, this grant was dependent upon planning permission for the new facility being approved – meaning to date, not one penny of it has been spent.
HOHH member Steve Chorley said: “97 per cent of respondents to our survey felt their fear of crime would increase if this plan were to go ahead.
It lies within the Yeovil conservation area, a short distance from the popular Quicksilver Mail pub, the Yeovil Country Park (also known as Ninesprings) and the Keyford development site, which will eventually deliver up to 800 new homes.
Thomas Taylor argued the plans went against BCHA’s own vision for accommodating homeless people in smaller units, where support could be more intensive and bespoke to individuals’ needs.
not a bad organisation – this is just a bad application.
After nearly three-and-a-half hours’ debate, the committee voted unanimously to refuse planning permission –prompting widespread applause from members of the public.
Nigel Gage, who sits on Yeovil Town Council, said: “The town centre has become a war zone, with the police being unable to control the situation due to a lack of resources.
Acacia Lodge lies at 116 Hendford Hill, a short distance from the busy Quicksilver roundabout which links the town centre to the nearby village of West Coker and Dorset via the A37 Dorchester Road.
Avon and Somerset Constabulary did not provide a formal response to the council during the consultation period, and did not send any representatives to speak at the Confrontedmeeting, with the scale and eloquence of these objections, not one councillor on the committee spoke in favour of the Acacia Lodge plans.

Cllr Graham Oakes added: “BCHA is
The four-storey former care home, which has 39 bedrooms, closed its doors in November 2018 after an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) deemed it “inadequate” for meeting residents’ needs.
“Only one person appears to be driving this forward: the leader of the council. The plan is wrong.”
The BCHA could theoretically lodge an appeal with the Planning Inspectorate in a bid to overturn the decision; however, the organisation has not yet given an indication that it wishes to pursue this angle. The council and BCHA will now work together to see what alternative, smaller sites could be secured to ensure the district’s homeless population are properly supported.
He said: “The facility is too large. The proposals for 39 beds – with the prospect of increasing by a further 40 beds – is in contrast to national government policy and those of charities such as Crisis.
The former Acacia Lodge care home at the top of Hendford Hill in Yeovil.
The council hopes to improve Newton Road and the surrounding area as part of its flagship Yeovil Refresh regeneration scheme, which has attracted funding from the government’s future high streets fund.Dozens of residents gathered at The Gateway on Addlewell Lane on August 10 to voice their displeasure – including numerous members of the pressure group Hands Off Hendford Hill (HOHH).
Since then, the facility has been used by Yeovil Hospital to provide additional bed capacity during the coronavirus pandemic, and is currently used by Enable Support Services, which provides mental health services for NHS patients.
He said: “This will be a recipe of disaster on so many levels. We as councillors are here to help Yeovil prosper, and speak on behalf of our residents.”
Cllr David Gubbins said residents and businesses would be “disastrously affected” if the plans were approved.
Cllr Gina Seaton said: “It isn’t that we don’t want to help everybody in this area. It is that Acacia Lodge is not fit for purpose.
“I was horrified during the site visit last night [August 9]. Smaller buildings are where we should be going – that is the advice we have received, and it is not beyond the wit of man to achieve it.”
residents’ needs.
“If we don’t have an official view from the police, I would rather listen to the retired police officer who says there will be a problem – or the people I met during the local elections in the Westland ward who told me they were scared.

Regular building surveys are carried out at all Somerset schools to monitor the conditions of the buildings. A recent survey was carried out two weeks ago on the Milford Junior School site with the findings received last week. The report established there are concerns with the structure of the school building.
“We have worked very hard to ensure all children will receive face to face teaching in school environments with their own teachers and support staff as well as specialist SEN support, while we work, at pace, with the DfE and Somerset County Council to create a new temporary school, complete with hall and playing areas, to be ready by the end of the autumn term.
“All our staff are ready to support the children and ensure they are comfortable with the arrangements we have made.”
“We will continue to work with the school and local community over the coming weeks to ensure all transitions

Safety of children and staff always take precedence as school building is closed
As a precautionary measure only, further and more detailed checks and inspections are taking place at Milford Infants School - although no concerns are evident from the initial findings of its most recent survey which took place at the beginning of the summer holiday.
Wendy Chant, head of Milford Infants School, said: “We are disappointed that our start to the academic year has been postponed but the safety of our children and staff is paramount.”
In the best interests of pupils and staff, the Milford Junior School building has therefore closed with immediate effect with alternative education provision being put in place for staff and over 400 children.TheHuish Academy Trust, Department for Education and Somerset County Council are doing everything within their powers to establish a temporary building solution which ensures the children can be brought back together on one site as soon as possible.
Due to these concerns, we made an application for a new school build to the DfE in April, and we are hopeful that this will move forward quickly. Following a visit to survey the structure by further specialist DfE structural engineers, a decision was made not to open the site to staff or children.

Neutering offers many solid benefits to cats and owners alike. A neutered cat is less likely to spray, less likely to roam and also less likely to fight. Neutering also helps guard against disease as fighting cats are more at risk of life-threatening diseases that can be transmitted through biting.Spaying a female cat reduces the chances of mammary cancer or a serious uterine condition that can cause death.

By starting the conversation, providing support and directing help to those who need it, we can help bring hope and save lives. So how can we as individuals play a part in bringing about this change? The Christians Against Poverty Debt Centre in Yeovil has followed some advice from mind.org.uk, where you can also find additional support.
Knowing someone close to you is contemplating suicide can be distressing. If the upset stays with you, it’s important to recognise you need support, too. As you show compassion and encourage others to reach out and ask for help, remember to have compassion for yourself in the process.

“When you search for me, you will find me” is a promise that God makes and it is available to everyone. Whether you choose to begin that search or not is entirely your choice, but it is my prayer that the plans you make this September will bring you a strong and lasting hope for the future.
AS I write this month I have not long returned from holiday. During my two weeks off – a week at home and a thoroughly enjoyable week in the New Forest with family – I was unfortunate enough to have a brief encounter with Covid-19.

THE people of Yeovil and surrounding area united as one on August 14, 2019, to oppose proposals for the planned closure of the inpatient unit at St Margaret’s Hospice in the Thetown.Octagon Theatre was packed for a Public Information Event where hospice bosses tried to explain the reasoning behind the controversial proposals. The auditorium was full of emotion, concern, anger and disbelief that St Margaret’s would take away the inpatient unit at the hospice – the very core of the hospice - which has been a much-loved and cherished part of the Yeovil community ever since it was officially opened in 2004. Despite the opposition, the inpatient unit was still closed. This photo appeared in the September 2019 edition of Yeovil Press. Photo: Christine Jones.

The Yeovil 2nds put up a great battle against their Cranmore opponents in the final hosted by the Somerset Cricket Foundation, but they just ran out of steam come the end and lost by 30 runs.
The final was played at the home of Somerset County Cricket Club in Taunton on August 21 and the Yeovil team was backed by a good number of supporters.

Yeovil skipper Sam Watts won the toss and elected to field and they struck early with opener Joe Weare going for a duck when he was caught and bowled by Joseph Kember.
The main thorns in the Yeovil side were bowlers Brad Angell who took 3-17 and Taylor Angel l with 5-16.
He explained that back in his day the 2nds was usually mainly made up of “old boys” who had done their time in the 1sts and were in the twilight of their playing days, whereas now the 2nds was a team of young and up-and-coming players looking to get into the first team.

But Cranmore, knowing they needed more runs, opened up and Noah Millard hit 24 off 19 balls, while Harry Hatch cracked a big six off the final delivery of the innings to see his side to a total of 117-7 from their 20 overs.
Future looks bright as young guns just miss out on cup glory
Some good bowling and fielding saw Yeovil restrict their opponents with the bat and after 17 overs Cranmore had only reached 81-6.
Lewis Holland finished with 3-15 and Joseph Kember took 2-32, while praise should be given to opening bowler Daniel Kenyon who conceded just 13 runs off his fourYeovilovers.also, just as Cranmore did, found the going tough batting in reply and only Michael Harvey looked to provide much resistance with 25. Yeovil were bowled out for 87 to give Cranmore a 30-run victory – a margin which was probably a little unkind on Sam Watts’ young team.

04: What is the best Yeovil Town game you have watched? As a Manchester
02: What was the first game you can remember watching Yeovil Town FC? The first game I remember watching as a young boy was probably Yeovil Town against Brentford in the League One Playoff Final at Wembley Stadium in 2013.
Each month we will spotlight a Yeovil Town fan in surname alphabetical order and ask them 11 questions relating to their support of the Glovers.
05: What has been the biggest disappointment for you as a Yeovil Town fan? Watching the club plummet down the Football League over a short amount of time - as the club was once in The Championship less than a decade ago and seeing our club in the National League is truly heartbreaking.
M is for Lian McGUINN! Welcome to the 13th instalment of the Fan Zone A-to-Z 1-to-11 feature.
If you want to be included in a future edition of the Fan Zone please get in touch by emailing Yeovil Press editor Steve Sowden at yeovilpress@gmail.com. We could well be interested in hearing from any Yeovil fan with a surname beginning with the letter Z!

07: If you could name any one footballer – alive or dead – from the world of football who you would have liked to have seen play for Yeovil Town, who would it be and why? A player I would have loved to have seen play for Yeovil is the Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy. He’s played at our club level before and would love to see his mentality playing in our squad.
Midfielder Joe Edwards – Turn to Questions 3 and 11.
Striker Madden

10: What are your hopes and aspirations for Yeovil Town’s future and the 2022-23 season? I hope the team can stick together and not crumble with lack of commitment and lack of focus in the middle and end of the season. I also hope the players and fans can stick together at all times and back every decision made by players and the club and hopefully finish in the top seven.

Leicester City legend
Jamie Vardy – Turn to Question 7.

09: If you won the National Lottery jackpot and bought Yeovil Town FC –what is the first thing you would do (within reason!)? If I was to the win the lottery and bought Yeovil I would first buy the ground back from South Somerset District Council and own 100 per cent of the land. I would make it a fan-run club and listen to what the fans would want and make it happen. I would expand the ground and bring in a clinical 30-goal-a-season striker.
United fan, as well as a Yeovil fan, supporting the Glovers when coming up against Man Utd in the FA Cup run was one to never forget - so for me it had to be the January 26, 2018, game against Manchester United in the Fourth Round at Huish Park.

01: How many years have you been supporting Yeovil Town FC? Since I was born - meaning at least 17 years!
08: Favourite away ground and why?
For my favourite away ground that I’ve been to I’m going to say Woking as the day out itself was a brilliant day and the ground felt like a League One or League Two standard ground.

06: What has been your favourite goal scored by Yeovil Town? One of my favourite Yeovil Town goals has to be the classic Paddy Madden goal in the League One Play-Off Final against Brentford in 2013 or Jordan Barnett’s goal against Torquay United at Huish Park last season which was a beautiful strike.
03: Who have been your all-time favourite Yeovil Town player and your favourite manager? Personally my favourite all-time Yeovil player has got to be Joe Edwards. As a young boy I met him in a supermarket and looked up to him for a while after that. My favourite manager, without a doubt, has to be Gary Johnson!

Six-foot tall right-back Arthur Hickman made over 200 appearances for the Glovers in a five-season stay from 194651.But a year before he arrived at the sloping pitch of Huish he had been standing guard over the captured Joseph Kramer – known as the Beast of Belsen.
Kramer was detained by the British Army after the Second World War, convicted of war crimes, and hanged on the gallows in the prison at Hamelin in Germany by Albert Pierrepoint on December 13, 1945.
Following a long career in the Football League, Spink later became manager of Nationwide Conference side Forest Green Rovers and led them to the 2001 FA Trophy Final which they lost 1-0 to Canvey Island at Villa Park. The following season Yeovil won the Trophy with a 2-0 success over Stevenage Borough.

After a spell in hospital he caught up with his regiment as they crossed the Rhine. He was one of the first to enter Belsen’s horrific concentration camp in 1945 and was given the task of guarding Kramer – who was directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of people.
It was back on November 20, 1976, when Chelmsford arrived in South Somerset with the former England, Chelsea, AC Milan, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United attacker in their line-up.When his Football League career came to an end in 1971 Greaves saw his off-thepitch battle with the booze become even more of a problem as he fell into a world of alcoholism where he was drinking 20 pints of lager during the day and a bottle of vodka during the evening.
He also executed several high-profile murderers including John Christie, the Rillington Place Strangler, in 1953; and Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hung in Britain, in 1955.

The match finished in an easily forgettable 0-0 draw and Yeovil returned to South Somerset with a point.
To put it into context when Yeovil scored in all but one league game in the 1985-86 season; the only time the Glovers have equalled that feat in modern times was when they won the Nationwide

“I’m not sure of the statistics, but for Yeovil to have gone so long into the season before having a game where they didn’t score must be some sort of club record?”
Yeovil Town strikers Phil James (left), John McGinlay (top right) and Paul Randall (bottom right) all had a rare blank day when they face Barking on March 22, 1986.

“I was at the game and it was my 15th birthday – what a way to spend a birthday watching a 0-0 bore draw,” he said. “But, possibly, the only interesting thing about that game was that it represented the first
time that season that Yeovil had failed to score in a league match.

When the new club folded in 2006, Barking were re-established and joined the Essex Senior League. In the 201617 season the club won the Essex Senior League, earning promotion to the North Division of the Isthmian League. hat-trick with Altrincham having former Manchester United keeper Alex Stepney, who won the European Cup with United in 1968, in goal for them. That was pretty special and stands out.”
Yeovil’s player-manager Gerry Gow had assembled an impressive attackminded team including the likes of John McGinlay, Paul Randall and Phil James – so for the Glovers not to score was unusual!
It was in January 1968 that the then Yeovil manager Ron Saunders brought Myers to Huish having previously been at Charlton Athletic and Brentford.
During that final he made a memorable close-range save from Benfica striker Eusebio – the legendary Portuguese attacker – in the closing stages of the match with the score at 1-1. Eusebio was so astonished at Stepney’s save that he stopped to applaud the keeper.
Move over Eusebio, Stepney couldn't stop Yeovil's Clive Green!
1986: YEOVIL Town’s trip to Barking in the latter stages of the 1985-86 season in the Vauxhall-Opel Premier League would not tend to raise much interest looking back 36 years.
But going back to Yeovil and not scoring goals in games.
But although it might be a game that does not sit easily in the memory bank, it is remembered by Yeovil Press editor Steve Sowden.
And it is a match which is still fondly remembered by Green.
The game at Mayesbrook Park on March 22, 1986, represented the Glovers’ 32nd league fixture of the season in a campaign which was developing into a two-horse race between Yeovil and Sutton United.
The Glovers eventually finished that season as runners-up behind Sutton United, but the game at Barking was the only game they failed to score in during that Vauxhall-Opel Premier Division campaign. Their final ten league fixtures saw them score 31 goals – an average of just over three goals per match.
Green, who joined Yeovil in the 197778 season, went on to score 76 goals for the Glovers during the four years he spent at Huish and is 11th on the club’s top goalscorers’ chart.

100 Huish Heroes - in tribute to John Lukins
He was bought back to Huish from Maidstone for £11,000 in March 1988, but after another 14 games was sold on to Runcorn for £15,000; this time because a new job up north limited his travelling.
NOTE: Ralph Davis died at the age of 84 on March 13, 2006, after suddenly falling ill. Only two days before he had been at Huish Park and was part of a 7,451-crowd to watch Yeovil Town drew 0-0 with Swindon Town in the Coca-Cola League One. He was a true Glovers’ fan right up until the end.
No 8 - 100 Huish Heroes: If you blinked you tended to miss Mick Doherty
He was undoubtedly one of Yeovil’s best-ever goal poachers, with so many moves, if you blinked you tended to miss him.
He had a few war-time games for Hereford United when he was in the Royal Air Force, but when Stock arrived as Yeovil’s new player-manager in 1947 it was not long before he was heading to Stoke-sub-Hamdon to snap up the speedy youngRalphfull-back.didnot have much in common with the other full-back, Arthur Hickman. Arthur was a bit slower, but he was capable of putting ball and man over the grandstand if needed.

STRIKER Mick Doherty was born under a wandering star. When he came to Yeovil Town in December 1983 at the age of 23 he had already played for Hounslow, Wigan, Basingstoke, Reading and Slough.
But wanderlust, or was it the lure of Weymouth’s cash, saw him off to Dorset for £8,000 the following October.
In a tribute to John, we are picking out two of his 100 heroes each month to keep the name of John Lukins in the local press.
In the mid-1990s when Graham Roberts was manager he wrote 100 Huish Heroes. The book highlights –as the title suggests – 100 heroes from Yeovil Town’s history at Huish and HuishJohnPark.passed away on March 9, 2022, at the age of 81.

THE late John Lukins had written thousands of words about Yeovil Town during his career reporting on the happenings of the Glovers at Huish and Huish Park for around 50 or so years.

In 34 games for Yeovil that season he netted 25 goals and staved off relegation almost single-handed.

John was so highly-thought of that the press box at Huish Park was named after him.
No 7 - 100 Huish Heroes: Wingers were put to shame by left-back Ralph Davis
In this edition of Yeovil Press we have randomly selected players for Numbers 7 and 8 from John’s 100 Huish Heroes book – Ralph Davis and Mick Doherty.
The end did not come before he had enjoyed many a tussle with Weymouth’s Sammy McGowan. “He was the winger I always liked playing against,” said Ralph. “He was quick too and we had some great battles. I always had to work hard to keep him on the outside.”
Mick Doherty (right) celebrates a Yeovil Town goal with team-mate Martyn Grimshaw in the latter stages of the successful 1987-88 season.

Ralph, who was still living at Stoke-subHamdon and still supporting the Glovers when John Lukins wrote One Hundred Huish Heroes in the mid-1990s, said: “I was smaller, but I was a good tackler and speed was my other big asset. Alec used to tell me my speed put wingers to shame.”Those sentiments were also echoed by Ralph’s team-mate Bob Hamilton. “In these days of wing-backs, Ralph would have been ideal for the job,” he said.
LEFT-BACK Ralph Davis was one of the truly local men in Alec Stock’s great FA Cup side of 1948-49 which famously beat Sunderland at the sloping pitch of Huish in the Fourth Round.
