Sobre un mar azul cobalto Over a blue cobalt sea
Santorini es quizás la isla más bonita de las Cícladas, en el Mar Egeo. Aunque el turismo ha cambiado su espíritu, aún conserva un aire mágico que se potencia por un paisaje donde el blanco más inmaculado convive con el azul más fuerte. Santorini is probably the most beautiful of the Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea. Although tourism has changed it, it’s still has the magical air of a countryside where the most immaculate white exists right alongside the strongest blue. as islas antiguamente eran una sola isla. Era de forma redonda, como si fuera un huevo frito. Pero en el 1627 A.C., su parte central explotó y provocó la mayor explosión volcánica de la que pueda haber registro. Nadie lo pudo apuntar, pero basta decir que la civilización minoica, que había surgido con esplendor en Creta, desapareció de la historia por la fuerza del tsunami que causó la explosión. Y dicen que aquí surgió la leyenda de la Atlántida. Así nació Santorini, que tras otras erupciones y movimientos telúricos, ahora tiene forma de cruasán y es uno de los centros turísticos más importantes –y más bonitos– de las islas Cícladas, en el Mar Egeo. Aquí los ojos no se cansan de tanta belleza. El Egeo es un mar de un azul imposible, y las costas de Santorini en realidad son acantilados de 100 a 300 metros de alto, como

istorically this group of islands made up one island. It was round like a fried egg. But in 1627 B.C., a volcano in the island’s center erupted in what may have been the strongest volcanic event in history. No one was there to record it but it’s known that nearby Minoan settlements, connected to the splendor in Crete, were devastated by this explosion. It’s even been said that this catastrophe gave rise to the legend of Atlantis. So Santorini was born. Since then there have been other volcanic eruptions and seismic movement, so that it now has the shape of a croissant and has become one of the most important -and beautiful- tourist sites in the Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea. Las rocas volcánicas confieren un tapiz multicolor, donde las rocas negras se mezclan con otras de un rojo furioso, y cada tanto, los pastizales y las margaritas dan un delicioso contraste a esta paleta cromática. Y para atenuar, o para resaltar según donde pegue el sol, el blanco, impoluto y permanente, de la casas pintadas a la cal. Si alguien recuerda una imagen de las casitas blancas y las iglesias con cúpulas azules, pues este es el lugar. La principal ciudad de Santorini es Fira (o Thera, en lengua griega), una villa pensada por y para el turismo, con un pequeño centro que se convierte en un nudo de tránsito, y unas callejuelas en las que conviven tiendas de lujo con bares y restaurantes de comidas típicas. Pero todos los caminos llevan, invariablemente, al paseo de la cornisa mayor, donde la caída del sol es un espectáculo que ningún visitante puede perderse. of 100 to 300 meters. They look like polished fruit from a distance. The volcanic rock lends the island the air of a multi-colored tapestry as black rock mixes with others that are furious red. The result is that the various pastures and sunflowers create a delicious contrast in this chromatic palate. And to soften it all, or maybe to emphasis the sunshine, there are the white washed walls of the houses, unpolluted and permanent. If you’ve ever remembered an image of small white houses and churches with blue copulas, well, this is the place. The main city on Santorini is Fira (or Thera in Greek), a small town that’s remembered for and by tourists. It’s a small place that’s actually a knot of tiny streets. There’s a mix of luxury jewelry shops next to bars and restaurants that serve local food and drink. But all roads lead, invariably, to the old coast where the view of the sunset is so spectacular that no visitor should miss it.

mejores vista del paraje. Y en el medio de este paisaje, siempre presente, la isla de Palea Kameni, que surgió de erupción en erupción, la última en 1950. A ella se puede llegar en una excursión en barco, que permite descender y recorrerla para descubrir un paisaje lunar, con fumatas de azufre que recuerdan que el volcán puede estar dormido pero no extinto. Al otro lado del volcán, la goleta acerca hasta los chiringuitos de Manolas. Pero el pueblo homónimo, al que se accede tras fatigar más de 300 escalones cuesta arriba, es uno de los escasos ejemplos de cómo es la vida cotidiana en estas islas sin que el turismo masivo haya cambiado su fisonomía y sus costumbres. Es cierto que aquí las casas no son tan impecables y los pastizales son largos. Pero como en toda Grecia, sus habitantes siempre reciben al visitante con una sonrisa. 66 · Lo m+s Barcelona
wonderful view from this spot. And in the middle of all of this, always present, is the island of Palea Kameni that was formed in the eruption of 1950. The island is visited by tourist boats and it’s possible to climb and walk all over the lunar landscape where columns of sulfur smoke remind us that the though the volcano is sleeping, it’s not dead. On the other side of the volcano, a schooner nears the beach bars of Manolas. The village on top of the cliff has the same name though it takes 300 exhausting steps to get there. This is one of the few remaining examples of life from the time before massive tourism changed local appearances and routines. Of course not all the houses on the island are perfect, and most of the pastures are long. But like in all of Greece, the people that live there receive visitors with a smile.
