eremy Miller, formerly of Lisbon, Ohio has spent a life time singing and riding horses and bulls. He grew up singing in church and around the campfire with family and friends, which has now taken him to his newest destination, the stage. At fourteen years old, Miller took his passion for riding horses to breaking and training thoroughbreds. Soon after, a friend of Miller’s dared him to get on a bull. This turned into an adventure all its own, spending the next 15 years riding bulls in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, on the First Frontier Circuit, the International Bull Riders, the International Rodeo Association and the National Federation of Professional Bull Riders. Miller had an amazing bull riding career until two consecutive skull fractures ended his career. Two days after being released from the hospital, Miller had decided to pack up his belongings in his truck and head to Nashville to follow his dreams. Upon his arrival in Music City, Miller began playing gigs at the Cadillac Ranch. One of Miller’s biggest influences was Chris Ledoux. He would listen to Ledoux’s music while getting pumped up for a ride. Miller’s other musical influences are Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, Waylon Jennings and George Strait. Miller released his first album in 2010, that contained six songs, including the inspirational song, “Falling Forward”, which many have found to be their favorite song on the cd. The music and passion behind the song has helped many friends and fans get through the tough times in life personally. This album has helped to define Miller as a person, a hard working father, cowboy and country music artist, whom is making all of his dreams come true. Miller released his newest album, “This is Jeremy Miller”, at the beginning of June, 2013 and is continuing to write more songs with Dillon Dixon, Don Goodman, Kevin Herrick and Ray Smitherman, and is currently booking dates well into 2014. As music by Jeremy Miller continues to rise in popularity, his fan base has grown to include people of all ages. The new album includes some of the songs from his first album, along with newer tunes including Nails in the Coffin, Don’t Tell your Wife and Devil’s Door.
Along with the release of his new album, Miller also released his latest video, featuring the song “8 Seconds At A Time.” It can be viewed on Facebook and on Youtube. The song, “Falling Forward”, has helped me get through some tough times and it is currently helping others get through the things that they are going through, said Miller.” Miller is a big supporter of Cystic Fibrosis and each year he returns to Ohio to play in Buffalo Hollow at the Cystic Fibrosis Explosion, sharing the stage with the likes of Charlie Daniels, Tammy Cochran, Black Hawk and many others in an effort to raise money for the for the Niki Feezle Foundation of Hope. . Most recently, Miller made a trip to Las Vegas in late November of 2012, to perform at Bailey’s during the International Association of Fairs and Expositions. “Being able to play in Las Vegas was a lot of fun. The city offers something for everyone to do.” says Miller. While not spending time performing, writing songs and working his day job, Miller enjoys playing golf. While in high school, he was offered a scholarship to play the sport and turned it down to follow his dreams. Leon, Iowa “Grand Daddy of Open Rodeos”
Story and photos by FOTOCOWBOY Kent Kerschner Leon, Iowa has one of the biggest rodeos in the area. It has been named the "grand daddy of open rodeos" by the contestants that have either competed or still compete at the rodeo. Over 660 contestants competed from 11 states including, Iowa, Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Arkansas. As this was the 51st Leon Rodeo, you couldn't have asked for any better weather. During the 50th rodeo, the weather was extremely hot, not just hot but plain HOT. The temperatures were in the high 70's every night of the rodeo performances, which helped in making it one of the largest rodeos in the area. As over $36,000 was paid out at the pay window to the winning contestants. There were several rodeo associations in attendance, Iowa Rodeo Cowboys Association, United Rodeo Association, Missouri Rodeo Cowboys Association, and Mid States Rodeo Association, The Leon rodeo’s president is Mark Smith. With the help from volunteers, the town rolls out the red carpet to help put on the event. All of the money spent to put on the rodeo is spent in the town to help support all the sponsors of the rodeo. Mark stated "It takes months of planning to put on such a rodeo as this." The arena has two different levels of seating. The main level of seating is for general admission. People will come in early to stake their spot to sit for the rodeo, which would mean they would show up 2 hours before the rodeo. The second level of seating is above the lower level. This is the "sky" box seating and is a special reserved section for sponsors. Each box has seating for up to 8 people and every box is reserved. Mark mentioned that there is a waiting list to get a sky box. They did just recently add on 4 more boxes, just before the rodeo. Mark said that if he could get 30 more boxes, he would still have people waiting for a spot. They do have plans to add on a few more boxes. This rodeo draws in spectators from across the area for miles around and they love the sport of rodeo. They just recently purchased some land to use for parking, as they ran out of parking spaces. They went from a 3 day rodeo to a 4 day rodeo, because they had so many contestants, which also makes for a lot of slack after the rodeo each night. The rodeo tries to keep the cost of going to a rodeo to a minimum for the spectators. The tickets are kept to an affordable family price, so the whole family can come to the rodeo. The price of drinks, food, and beer are also kept very reasonable. The biggest section of contestants happens to be barrel racers, as Mark put it, "They love the ground". They work and strive to have the grounds in great shape. ‘Speed’ is the name of the tractor driver, or "grounds" keeper. He keeps the ground groomed and the best it can be. 4 Just Bucking News

Each year they have a different specialty act to help keep the crowd entertained. They have had almost every type of entertainer you can name. For the past several years, the sky diver that brings in the American Flag, by sky diving into the middle of the small arena, is an awesome sight. For an added bonus of entertainment, the first 2 nights of the rodeo is mutton busting, then mini bull riding, which was a crowd favorite. Then came the last 2 nights of the rodeo and a calf scramble that would let all the kids get involved. This year they added mini horse races. The ages of the contestants for the horse races ranged from 2 years of age to 9 years of age. The crowd really got into this part of the pre-rodeo action. The rodeo has 2 announcers to keep the action going at all times, so there is no down time in the action. With the funny acts of Shawn "Boom Boom" Thompson, the laughter and fun was had by all that was watching the “Grand Daddy of any open rodeo�.

Teel stays on even keel, earns Cody X Bulls title CODY, WY – Ask Cody Teel about the shattered left elbow that sidelined him for two months earlier this year or the fractured jaw that led to him spending much of the last month with his jaw wired shut, and he just kind of shrugs. It’s bull rider code for “Hey, it happens to everybody.” No big deal. “I’ve had something pretty much every year,” Teel said. “It was a ruptured intestine two years ago, a broken leg last year and this time it was the elbow. You can’t let it get you down. You have to keep your mind on what you need to do, and I was bound and determined to get back on track as soon as I could.” It’s hard to argue with this mind over (smashed) matter approach to things when Teel has just taken a ride in the back of a Ram truck to celebrate his first win in a PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour event and a check for $11,139. An 88.5-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Bo Didley in the short go at Stampede Park, June 30, was just enough to get him the Cody/Yellowstone Xtreme Bulls title with 169.5 points, a half-point ahead of rookie Cooper Davis, the only other man to have two qualified rides on the evening. “I’d never been on Bo Didley before, but I’d seen him plenty of times,” Teel said. “I knew his usual pattern … that he would start off to the right and then turn back to the left. That’s usually where he’ll buck guys off. He stuck to the plan and I was prepared.” For the record, the fractured jaw is “sore to the touch,” but doesn’t really affect him when he’s riding. He had the wires cut a couple of days before the Reno Nevada Xtreme Bulls (he tied for fifth there) and just went back to work. The left (free arm) elbow? Same deal. It’s still a little tender, but it is not interfering with Teel, of Kountze, TX, trying to retain the world championship he won last December at age 20 (the youngest bull riding champion in PRCA history). He moved up from fourth to second in the world standings on the basis of his win in Cody. Davis won the first round with a 92-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Kojack (while Teel was fifth), then finished second in the short go and in the average to earn an event-best $12,030. Fellow rookie Elliot Jacoby (89 on one head), finished third and banked $7,238. It kept their season-long battle for the lead in the rookie standings as tight as ever. Jacoby has season earnings of $45,747, putting him $1,484 ahead of Davis. They are sixth and eighth in the July 1 world standings.

DeMers uses re-ride to win second St. Paul title ST. PAUL, OR – There was nothing bittersweet about Cody DeMers’ huge victory at the St. Paul Rodeo – it was as sweet as it gets. The 34-year-old bareback rider was awarded a re-ride after his first horse didn’t perform up to the judges’ standards, and his second chance on Growney Brothers’ Bittersweet left a wonderful taste in his mouth. DeMers, who rode on July 4, wasn’t sure if the 86 points he earned would hold up until the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour Gold rodeo ended Saturday night. It did – and with it, a check for $10,465. “I’d been on that horse one other time in Clovis (CA) earlier this year, and it didn’t go well there,” DeMers said. “Getting some payback on him was nice. I don’t know what changed between rides, but the horse had a phenomenal day. He jumped and kicked and didn’t cover much ground and allowed me to show off and have some fun.” “Fun” wasn’t necessarily a word DeMers would’ve equated to his 2013 season until Saturday night. He sat 34th in the world standings before the Cowboy Christmas run, with $10,873 – just $408 more than he won in St. Paul. Now he’s up to 21st. “I hadn’t been to many rodeos this year and I had barely won anything at the ones I went to,” he said. “This will make my summer a lot easier and makes it a lot easier to go up and down the road. When you can earn a check like that it helps your confidence and you ride better, because you’re not worried about the small stuff.” The only other time DeMers found any success in St. Paul was 2011, when he rode for 87 points on Korkow Rodeos’ Inky to win the title and earn $9,525. “I usually can barely get a check in St. Paul, so to win it again is great,” he said. “The last time I won there it helped push me to the (Wrangler) NFR, so I’m hoping this is a sign that I’m going to get back on that track again. “I’m entered in all the rodeos up to Cheyenne and then I’m going to figure out what I’m going to do as far as hitting the road hard the rest of the season. But this win sure makes me want to stay on the road.”
Benton back in business after huge weekend SALINAS, CA – Trey Benton III was in a sophomore slump in 2013 – until this weekend. The 2012 PRCA Resistol Bull Riding Rookie of the Year, Benton took ProRodeo by storm last season, qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and finishing ninth in the world standings. However, 2013 hadn’t been nearly as fruitful for the 21-year-old. That all changed with a huge weekend, including winning the California Rodeo Salinas, a Gold Tour stop on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour, presented by Justin Boots. Benton was flawless in his two trips. First, he rode for 88 points on Rafter G Rodeo Company’s Johnny Ramone for the first-round win. He followed that with an 89 in the July 21 final round aboard Corey & Lange Rodeo Company’s Wild Eyes to finish with 177 points on two head and win the first Gold Tour event of his career. “That bull came out of the chute really wild and crazy and it ended up being a great ride,” Benton said of his final-round 89. “I’ve won a few big rodeos, but this is the biggest. I really couldn’t ask for a better weekend than I just had.” Adding to his $9,070 windfall in Salinas was the $8,116 Benton earned for winning a round and finishing second in the average in Nampa, ID, just a night before. He entered the week 37th in the bull riding standings with $20,643, but his haul of $17,186 in two days took him to the No. 18 spot in the world. “I had barely won any money before Cowboy Christmas, and if I hadn’t picked up any good checks over the Fourth of July run I was probably going to stop rodeoing for the season
and head home,” Benton said. “But I was able to win a bunch in Prescott and, now with this weekend, I think I’ll be able to stay out on the road for quite awhile.” At the beginning of the season, Benton had to recover from a badly injured knee, which required surgery. He then had his head smashed by a bull in Fort Worth, which required facial reconstruction surgery due to some fractures. To say his perseverance has paid off is a huge understatement. “The beginning of the year was miserable; I couldn’t stay on anything and I kept getting hurt,” Benton said. “But I knew I could come back and win again, and I never stopped believing in myself.”
McDaniel’s season finds new life in Deadwood DEADWOOD, SD – Before anybody decides to write off Justin McDaniel for this year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo party in Las Vegas, it’s important to understand one thing: He’s healthy again. A world champion bareback rider at 22 and a two-time winner of the WNFR average title, McDaniel is a big-time talent and now that he is recovered from a back injury that sidelined him all winter, he is poised to make a late – and decidedly longshot – bid to chase down the field. McDaniel gained momentum, and a $4,004 check, on July 27 when he posted an 87-point ride on Burch Rodeo Company’s Pinball Girl to edge Tom McFarland by one point and win the Deadwood Days of ’76 Rodeo for the second time in five years. “I love this rodeo,” McDaniel told the Rapid City Journal. “I’m kind of behind in the world standings. I got started late. I need to win all that I can win. I love it here in Deadwood; it’s always good to win one of the good ones. “We have to win from here on out, so this is a good start. It ain’t over until it’s over. There’s plenty of money out there. I just have to win. I feel good now … better than I have in four or five years. I just have to keep riding good and drawing good. (The money) will all take care of itself.”

Pretty Prairie, Kansas Largest Night Rodeo by Roy Graber Riddle hopes repeat success at Pretty Prairie will help quest for elusive WNFR berth
PRETTY PRAIRIE, KS. -- Caine Riddle has had a special fondness for Kansas Largest Night Rodeo in Pretty Prairie. After taking the lead in the bareback riding on Wednesday night, he’s bound to like it even more. Riddle, Vernon, TX, assumed the top spot after scoring 83 points aboard Beutler and Son’s Satin Sheets, a horse he has had prior success riding. “That’s a great horse. I’ve had her twice this year, once in Austin and once in North Platte, (NE). I won money on her both times. I couldn’t have been happier to get on her. I’d like to get on her every day.” Tom McFarland, Bowie, TX, is Riddle’s traveling partner who is a four-time WNFR qualifier and won at Pretty Prairie in 2012. He sits in second with 80 points with three more performances to go. If Riddle is able to hang on to the top spot, it won’t be the first time he tasted success at Pretty Prairie. “I’ve won this rodeo several times. It was one of the first rodeos I ever won during my first year of entering,” said Riddle, who has been a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association member since 2004. “I like this rodeo. It’s a small town with a big rodeo, and those are always kind of fun. Plus the livestock’s really good. We came all the way from Nampa, ID, to work this one, and we’re going to Woodward, OK, tomorrow.” It could also help Riddle in his quest for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification. The top 15 in world standings get to compete at the WNFR, but a berth to the world championship rodeo has so far evaded him. He finished 19th in 2012 and 18th in 2011. Riddle is currently ranked 29th in world standings. While his luck had been a little tough in recent weeks, he is optimistic that will turn around. “There’s a lot of rodeos between now and September,” he said. Dean Lufkin, Sallisaw, OK, had the highest marked saddle bronc ride of the evening with an 80-point ride on Beutler and Son’s Dreamer. Defending Ram National Circuit Finals champion Curtis Garton, a New Zealand transplant now living in Lake Charles, LA, finished one point behind with a 79. Garton is ranked 19th in world standings. Contestants were even more snakebit in the bull riding event. None of the contestants on Wednesday, including 2012 Pretty Prairie bull riding champion Ross Burney, Coffeeville, MS, was able to make a qualified ride.

Askey’s breakout season continues at Pretty Prairie rodeo
PRETTY PRAIRIE, KS. – Ranked tenth in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s world standings, bull rider Jeff Askey appears well on his way to qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The 80-point ride he posted at Kansas Largest Night Rodeo in Pretty Prairie on Thursday evening can only help his cause. Askey, Martin, TN, stayed aboard the Beutler and Son bull Ghoul Fool to take over the lead at the Pretty Prairie rodeo, which has two nights remaining. Ghoul Fool didn’t exactly offer the trip that Askey expected, but the Tennessee cowboy made adjustments that worked well. “He usually turns to the left, and he tried to turn back to the left, but hit the bucking chutes and had to turn back to the right. Then, he just made rounds right next to the bucking chutes and I made an all-right bull ride,” he said. A native of Pennsylvania, Askey spent two years at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M on a rodeo scholarship before transferring to University of Tennessee-Martin. The UTM rodeo team is coached by John Luthi, a Kansas State University graduate who is a former PRCA bareback rider and bull rider. “He’s a great coach. Bull riding’s 90 percent mental and he’s really big on the mental side of the game. I credit my success in rodeo to going to school there. I ride way better now than I did before I went to school there. I graduated three years ago, but I still live there and still go around to practice,” Askey said. Askey is not only in his third year as a college graduate, he’s also in his third year of professional rodeo, but 2013 is the first year his name has been a fixture in the world standings. “I didn’t go really hard during the first two years. I went to rodeos, but I didn’t really push and try to make it to the finals,” Askey said. “This year, I had some success early in the year and got some good checks. I thought ‘Why not? I’m only getting older, so why not go after my dreams?’” 8 Just Bucking News
He will continue to pursue his dreams as he will spend the next several weeks at some of the country’s richest rodeos, including Nampa, ID; Salinas, CA; and Cheyenne, WY. Craig Wisehart, Kersey, Colo., had the highest-marked bareback ride on Thursday evening with 76 points, but he still sits third behind Caine Riddle, Vernon, TX; and Tom McFarland, Bowie, TX, who both rode on Wednesday. Riddle leads with 83 points. In the saddle bronc riding, Casey McGooden, Doniphan, NE, had the best effort Thursday with a 77, which currently puts him in third place. Dean Lufkin, Sallisaw, OK, leads with 80 points.

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. – In 2012, Nathan Klassen’s competitive spirit became known in living rooms across America as one of the contestants on the History Channel’s reality game show series “Full Metal Jousting.” One year later, he showed that same tenacity at Kansas Largest Night Rodeo in Pretty Prairie, moving into the lead of the bull riding event. Klassen, a native of Buhler and former Hutchinson Community College student who now lives in Broken Arrow, Okla., handled every jump and spin that the Beutler and Son bull “Catching Hell” threw at him on Friday evening to earn an 84-point score. “It felt good. I knew he would be good. I’ve actually seen this bull once before and I knew he’d fit my style pretty well, and it worked out,” said Klassen. A longtime contestant in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s Prairie Circuit, which includes rodeos in Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma, Klassen won the average at the Prairie Circuit Finals in 2001, and was the circuit’s year-end champion in 2007. While he is a circuit titlist as a bull rider, he did not fare quite as well as a jouster. He won his first round, but got beat in the quarterfinals. Both sports are challenging and involve danger, physical roughness and the ability to stay aboard a moving animal. However, Klassen said riding bulls is the winner when it comes to being the most risky. “Definitely, riding bulls is tougher,” he said. “In jousting, I compare it to football games, because you’re going against a person. You’re going out there to hit him as hard as you can, just like in a football game. Riding bulls to me is so much more dangerous because you’re dealing with an animal that’s trying to get you. “Bull riding is tougher, but jousting is still very, very difficult. I thought it would be easy, but it was not easy at all. I kind of struggled from day one, but I had a lot of fun doing it. When you get hit with one of those lances, you definitely feel it. It’s packing a punch. I had a lot more respect for them once I got done doing that sport. It’s very physically challenging, but as far as the fear factor is concerned, I’m a little immune from all these years of riding bulls.” Having grown up in Reno County, the Pretty Prairie rodeo is very familiar to Klassen, both as a spectator and as a contestant. “It’s been a mixed bag. I’ve made some good rides and I’ve stunk it up here,” Klassen said. “But it was a pleasure to ride here. It’s been one of my favorite rodeos; I’ve been coming here since I was little.” It will likely be the last year he competes here, he said. Now 35, he is older than many of his bull riding counterparts and feels like he needs to be spending more time at home. He took a year off in 2012 before coming returning to the sport on a limited basis. “This year, I’m just going to the ones I like the best,” he said. No other events saw a new leader emerge. That effort put Leddy in the No. 5 slot in Pretty Prairie. Caine Riddle, Vernon, TX, remains in the driver’s seat after scoring 83 points on Wednesday evening. Saddle bronc rider James Greeson, Huntsville, TX, had the best effort in his event on Friday, scoring 77 points. He moved into a tie for third, while Dean Lufkin, Sallisaw, OK, held onto his lead with his 80-point trip during the Wednesday performance.

Rainy rodeo arena no problem for fans and barrel racer Kyra Stierwalt
The rodeo grounds at Pretty Prairie received a healthy dose of rain both before and during the final performance of Kansas Largest Night Rodeo on Saturday night. While the slick and muddy arena may have hindered some rides and runs on Saturday, it certainly didn’t affect things for barrel racer Kyra Stierwalt. Dean Lufkin with 80 points on Dreamer Stierwalt, Leedey, OK, was the only person to move to the top of the from Buetler and Sons leaderboard during the final night of the four-day rodeo. She finished the pattern in 16.98 – the only sub 17 run of the rodeo – to win the event and pocket $1,456 in the process. Gretchen Benbenek, Aubrey, TX, put in a 17.09-second run on Wednesday night to finish second. Like all barrel racers on Saturday, Stierwalt was concerned about the safety of her horse and their ability to move through the mud. She made the run aboard a new mare she calls Stash. “I was kind of nervous watching the two before me,” said Stierwalt. “I was on a new horse I got in May this year, so she hasn’t been rodeoed much. She definitely impressed me.” The rain did little to hold back Stierwalt’s run, and the same could be said of the attendance at the rodeo. In true Pretty Prairie fashion, very few fans from the near-sellout crowd left the bleachers throughout the downpour. All other event winners competed during earlier performances. An 84-point bull ride put in by Nathan Klassen on Friday evening held onto the top spot. Klassen, a Buhler native now living in Broken Arrow, OK, stayed aboard the Beutler and Son Rodeo Company’s bull “Catching Hell” to win $1,742. “It felt good. I knew he would be good. I’ve actually seen this bull once before and I knew he’d fit my style pretty well, and it worked out,” said Klassen. Klassen, who in 2012 was seen on television sets across the nation as a competitor on the History Channel’s “Full Metal Jousting,” has been a longtime competitor at the Pretty Prairie rodeo. He took a year off from rodeo before returning to select rodeos in 2013. Now 35, he said he will probably retire from bull riding at the end of the year. Throughout his bull riding career, he has had some good rides at Pretty Prairie and others he’d just as soon forget. “It’s been a mixed bag. I’ve made some good rides and I’ve stunk it up here,” Klassen said. “But it was a pleasure to ride here. It’s been one of my favorite rodeos; I’ve been coming here since I was little.” The bareback riding was won by another longtime Pretty Prairie rodeo contestant. Caine Riddle, Vernon, TX, scored 83 on Wednesday night aboard Beutler and Son’s “Satin Sheets” to win the event and $1,232. “That’s a great horse. I’ve had her twice this year, once in Austin and once in North Platte, (NE). I won money on her both times. I couldn’t have been happier to get on her. I’d like to get on her every day,” said Riddle, who on two occasions has finished in the top 20 among PRCA bareback riders. “I like this rodeo. It’s a small town with a big rodeo, and those are always kind of fun. Plus the livestock’s really good. We came all the way from Nampa, ID, to work this one.” Dean Lufkin, Sallisaw, OK, won the saddle bronc riding with a 80-point ride aboard the Beutler and Son bronc “Dreamer” on Wednesday. He earned $1,702. Both of the top two saddle bronc riders competed on Wednesday. New Zelander Curtis Garton, the defending champion from the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo, finished second with a 79-point ride on “Falling Star.”
