There are a lot of things in the works for you, so we kind of shorted the July issue so we could have a lot of news and entertainment to bring to you in August and all of the months to come. We have a junior section, an international section, the Buck Board, as well as many other articles. It is our pleasure to write and produce this publication for you, but we always need your help. We need ideas, stories, human interest articles, pictures and things that you would like to see in the publication. We will be doing more things that ask you to get involved and will have great contests. Special thanks to everyone for their ideas and comments. We are glad you are enjoying the publication. Proctor makes Radical move in Fort Smith FORT SMITH, AR. – It looks like Shane Proctor might be reaching top form at just the right time. Just 24th in the world standings at the start of the May 27 through June 1 Old Fort Days Rodeo, Proctor came through with an 88-point ride on Silver Creek Pro Rodeo’s Radical Roller to earn the win at Harper Stadium and $4,046. It was his second big win in two weeks, following up on a 93-point ride at the Redding Rodeo – equal to the season’s highest score – and it takes him into the start of the lucrative summer season with a spot inside the Top 20 and a nice rise in momentum. The 88 points Proctor received on Radical Roller was the most ever achieved on a bull who has a 66.7-percent buck-off rate. Proctor was one of three past world champions to earn at least a share of a title at Old Fort Days. Bareback rider Bobby Mote, who has four gold buckles back home in Culver, OR., shared the win at Harper Stadium with Brian Bain and Micky Downare, all with scores of 85 points, and two-time World Champion Barrel Racer Brittany Pozzi won her event in a time of 15.97 seconds. The other champions at this $147,042 rodeo were steer wrestler Justin Smith (8.0 seconds on two head), rookie team ropers Hunter Munsell and Braden Harmon (10.0 seconds on two head), saddle bronc rider Heith DeMoss (85 points), tie-down roper Tyson Durfey (16.3 seconds on two head) and steer roper JoJo LeMond (31.2 seconds on three head). LeMond’s win moved him to first place in the steer roping world standings for the first time in his career, just $709 ahead of Chet Herren. Jake Cooper of Monument, NM, won the all-around title with $3,114 earned in team roping and tie-down roping.

Peebles extends hot streak in North Platte NORTH PLATTE, NE. – Given that Steven Peebles was in post-operative dry-dock for more than four months, it hasn’t taken him long to “knock the rust out of it.” Sitting outside the world top 50 just three weeks ago, Peebles has put together a string of four bareback riding wins in June, culminating with his first-ever title at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo June 12-15 in Wild West Arena. Peebles, of Redmond, OR, rode Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Hollywood Hills – a veteran of the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo – for 88 points to hold off Justin McDaniel and Ty Breuer by three points. With additional checks at the Texas rodeos in Weatherford and Coleman, Peebles moved inside the top 25 in the world standings and gave himself a bit of momentum heading into the heart of the big-money summer season. 4 Just Bucking News

Peebles, 24, competed at last December’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo – winning Round 9 – despite torn cartilage, ligaments and muscle in his hip. He underwent surgery on Dec. 18, knowing it was the right thing to do even if it meant missing the winter season. Taking injections for the pain will get a competitor only so far; at some point injuries have to be addressed and the Wrangler NFR brought that message home. The pain was so bad after Peebles won the ninth round in Las Vegas, he had to take three breaks as he walked out of the Thomas & Mack Center Arena. “But it’s all good now,” Peebles said. “Everything’s feeling good; there’s no hurt.” Prior to the title in North Platte, he had put together wins in Central Point, Ore.; Coulee City, Wash., and Sisters, Ore., putting him in reach of his fifth consecutive Wrangler NFR. The saddle bronc riding title in North Platte went to 12-time WNFR qualifier Jesse Bail of Camp Crook, S.D., who scored 83 points on the horse Dirty Joke – and he had to earn it. “The horse was supposed to be a little nicer to ride,” Bail said. “He bailed out of there and really bucked, turned back, and tried bucking me off through most of (the ride.) Shoot, I just kept gassing it and it felt good. He bucked a lot harder than I thought. He threw some ‘dirties,’ and it made me work a little harder than I was planning.” In the early days of the 33-year-old’s career, he steer wrestled and rode bulls, with six of his WNFR qualifications in bull riding. But after getting hurt in the bull riding a few years ago, he hasn’t gotten back on, even if the desire is still there. “I want to, I just don’t know if my body wants to,” Bail said. The other champions at Wild West Arena were steer wrestlers Reed Petersek and Nick Guy (7.8 seconds on two head each), team ropers Ty Blasingame and Matt Zancanella (5.2 seconds), tie-down roper Cory Solomon (20.3 seconds on two head), bull rider Tyler Smith (88 points) and barrel racer Brittany Pozzi (17.40 seconds). Smith’s win paid $3,050 and allowed the Fruita, Colo., cowboy to move past Josh Koschel into first place in the world standings – the week’s only lead change.

PRCA June Rodeo Updates Courtesy of the PRCA Smith extends world standings lead with Reno X Bulls title The win was one of the biggest of Smith’s career. “It means a lot,” he said. “It pays a lot of money and it’s a good way to start off Reno. I’ve got to come back to the rodeo on Sunday night, so it’s a good way to start my summer.” Xtreme Bulls success is no stranger to the 2010 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier. He won the Rapid City (S.D.) event earlier this season when he was 176 points on two head. Smith’s triumph also ended J.W. Harris’ two-year reign as the Reno Xtreme Bulls champion. Harris finished eighth after failing to ride in the final round. Since the Xtreme Bulls Tour began in 2003, Harris has won Reno three times (the last two years and 2006) while Clayton Foltyn and Wesley Silcox have each won the Reno title twice. Campbell was second in the average with 170 points, and collected a solid check totaling $8,084, while Willis made $5,687.

Nelson turns Bad Chance into big payday PLEASANT GROVE, UT – Tyler Nelson climbed

aboard a horse named Bad Chance when it was his turn at the Strawberry Days Rodeo, but the horse turned out to be anything but that. The 20-year-old bareback rider picked up one of the biggest wins of his young career by covering the Bar T Rodeo horse for 83 points to best a loaded field and earn $2,907. Among those Nelson defeated were two-time defending World Champion Kaycee Feild and threetime gold buckle winner Will Lowe. “I feel pretty blessed to be able to ride with those guys,” said Nelson, who netted his first win of the 2013 season. “This definitely builds my confidence and shows me I can ride with the best riders going.” Nelson rode Bad Chance in Oakley City, Utah, in 2012, only collecting 77 points. Feild rode the horse at Strawberry Days last year, earning 82 points. “This year she was quite a bit better than she was when I saw her last year,” Nelson said. “She came out and stayed in the middle of the arena and gave me a chance to make a good ride.” Nelson is no stranger to performing well on a big stage. In January 2012, just two months after buying his PRCA card, Nelson won the average at the Ram Montana Circuit Finals Rodeo in Great Falls. He came into the event in sixth place in the year-end standings, but dominated the competition thoroughly. Nelson won two of three rounds and easily took the average to advance to his first Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City. He says his goal for this summer is to simply hit the road and see how much money he can win. “I’m traveling with Cody DeMers over the Fourth of July run and then the rest of the year,” he said. “I feel like my career is going pretty well so far; I’m going to try to hit it harder and stay in shape to win more. I’m hoping to be able to make it to the (Wrangler) NFR either this year or next year.”
