RNCFR titles go to Mote, Garton, Young By Roy Graber A four-time world champion, a seasoned transplanted New Zealander and a community college student on a PRCA permit became title holders at the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo, held April 4-6 in Oklahoma City. Bobby Mote took the bareback riding title, Curtis Garton won the saddle bronc riding and John Young was the top bull rider at the championship rodeo. While Mote was arguably the most decorated contestant at the rodeo, the fact that he won the title and Ram truck voucher that goes with it came as a complete surprise to Mote. After finishing out of the money with an 80-point ride in the first round and logging a 78 in the second go, Mote didn’t even count on making it to the semifinals. “I thought there was no way I was going to make it back. My wife talked me into just staying, so we stayed. They were positive and optimistic while I guess I was guilty of not being. We went to the zoo today and I got a text that I made it back 8th. With this format, it doesn’t really matter as long as you come back,” said Mote, who represented the Columbia River Circuit. With the results of the first two rounds now irrelevant, Mote who qualified in the last slot, grabbed the top spot, winning the semifinals with 83 points on Mo Betta Rodeo Company’s Wind Walker. Bobby Mote Advancing to the finals, Mote had a reride after the flank fell off his original draw. Meanwhile, Prairie Circuit qualifier Jared Keylon topped Carr Pro Rodeo’s Dirty Jacket for 87 points – the highest marked bareback ride of the rodeo – to take the lead and presumably win the title. But Mote came back with his reride – Southwick’s Rocky Mountain Rodeo’s Hard Times, and matched Keylon’s score. While Keylon had more success in the earlier rounds and won more prize money at the RNCFR, it was Mote who won the title, by virtue of the rule that the tiebreaker went to who was more successful in the semifinals. Keylon tied for second in the semis, handing the win to Mote. “I’ll take it any way I can get it,” said Mote. Having already won four world titles and one other RNCFR title, Mote said few things could compare to the victory he won in Oklahoma City. “It’s really about the second most prestigious award you can win in the year-end scheme of things as far as rodeo goes,” he said. “With all the circuits in the circuit system, there’s a lot of good hands out there and to come out on top is an honor. I’m really grateful to have the chance to be here, let alone win.” Prior to the RNCFR, few people outside of the Great Lakes Circuit knew who John Young was.

“I really enjoy being out on tour, because I am able to spend time with people from all over the United States.” Matt Borden 4 Just Bucking News

But after dominating the bull riding there, his name is clear on the radar. Young, a PRCA permit holder and sophomore on the Iowa Central Community College rodeo team, made his presence known in the first round, taking second to Southeastern Circuit cowboy Dylan Werner, who completed an 89-point ride. Young was marked at 83 points. However, Young came back in round 2 to win with 86 points aboard Painted Pony Championship Rodeo’s Million Dollar Man. He also took the average, as only one of two riders to cover both head. John Young After getting bucked off in the semifinals, Young avenged by covering Andrews Rodeo’s Spin Cycle with 87 points. And while the announcer initially identified Young as Joe Frost, who won the semifinal round, Young pulled off his helmet, verifying he was in fact the winner. None of the other three finals qualifiers made the whistle. “Oh my gosh. It feels great,” said Young. “It took a lot to ride all three. … A lot of grit and a lot of try is what helped me win it. I just learned that you’ve pretty much got to outwork these guys. There’s a lot of guys that just have God-given talent. And it comes natural for those guys. I’ve got to work hard. I work hard every day. I’ll go through everything to be the best.” Young has less than one semester remaining before earning an associate’s degree, but rather than transfer to a four-year university, he is ready to hit the rodeo trail full-time and intends to get his card at the beginning of the 2014 season. Curtis Garton, a native of New Zealand who now resides at Lake Charles, La., has been a member of the PRCA since 2004. During that time, he’s cracked the top 50 five times and qualified for the RNCFR four times. But it wasn’t until this year that he added RNCFR champion to his rodeo resume. He did so by splitting the semifinals with Cody Taton with 83 points, then finishing with an outright win in the finals, covering Carr Pro Rodeo’s Big Tex for 86 points. “I am stoked,” said Garton, representing the Southeastern Circuit. “I can’t even explain to you how happy I am right now. It’s a huge thing. This rodeo here is one of the biggest rodeos in the nation. Vegas out there is the Super Bowl of rodeo, and then this one. For me to be able to win that buckle and get on that great horse, and to be the national champion of the Ram National Circuit Finals is just amazing.” Garton earned a paycheck at every opportunity during the RNCFR. He tied for first with Taos Muncy in the second go-round, took fourth in the first go, and finished second in the average.

Luck finally turns Creasy’s way in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, TX – Luke Creasy spent the better part of a month this winter painting while he healed from a back injury – Western-themed canvases mostly, but also a friend’s pool room. Now that he’s back to work as a bareback rider the tubes of paint are put away, which is not to say he shouldn’t make a little time to work up a portrait of himself on the back of Bambino Vold. It was that Korkow Rodeo horse who proved instrumental in turning Creasy’s luck around after a year that can only charitably be described as bleak. Horse and rider combined for an 86-point score that won the April 5-6 Walker County Fair & Rodeo, Creasy’s first title in nearly 11 months – dating back to the weekend in May when he shattered his right femur. “Winning a rodeo feels good any time,” Creasy said, “but getting an 86 made it kind of special. It put the wind back in my sails. A year ago, I won or split first place in eight rodeos and I was never above 83. “I mean, to be 86 after all I’ve had working against me? It’s just good to know I’ve still got it and that it held up for the win. I’ve been 86 a lot of times and been edged out by a half-point; honestly, I was afraid it would happen again. I expected to get bumped out of the lead. Given how Creasy’s luck has gone over the last year, his lack of faith is entirely understandable. At the time he broke his leg last May 19, Creasy, of Brownfield, Alberta, was at a career high. He won three rodeos that weekend – including Helldorado Days in Las Vegas, where the injury occurred after the whistle – and was ranked eighth in the world standings. One horrific instant later, featuring a summersault into the dirt off a bucking horse, and Creasy’s dreams of returning to Las Vegas in December for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo were obliterated like a butterfly on a windshield. Creasy healed, rehabbed and got himself fit again, aiming to make a big run at the winter rodeos. But early this year it was determined that his pelvis and lower leg had shifted, as a result of the broken femur. He got that corrected, but then chipped bone off a couple of lumbar vertebrae in Fort Worth and got benched again. “(Dr.) Tandy (Freeman) told me there wasn’t too much that could be done about it,” Creasy said. “He just told me to take time off and not move around too much. I got restless and thought about going to San Angelo (TX) after about 10 days. But I took three licks on the spur board and had these sharp, shooting pains. After that, I stayed pretty still for a month. That’s when he decided to revisit his interest in painting. He did a canvas showing the Pendleton, OR, Round-Up silhouette and the Let ’Er Buck Saloon for his friends Cody and Clay Anthony in Stephenville, TX (it was their pool room he painted, too). He also did a side view of a cowboy watching a sunset and, working from a vintage photo, a painting of an Indian wearing a headdress. “I just kind of dabble at it,” Creasy said. “I paint whatever comes to mind. The Indian headdress painting I did in one night. I kind of got in a zone.” Creasy put down the brushes and started climbing onto bareback horses in mid-March, going to at least a couple of rodeos every week. Including Huntsville (where he’d never competed before), he’s earned checks in five of nine rodeos thus far and his three-week total of $3,141 has him on edge of the top 50 in the world standings, with high hopes for things to come. “I feel great,” Creasy said. “It’s like the injuries are non-existent. I feel good, and I’m fit. I mean the incision where I had the leg surgery still aches from time to time, and you get bumps and bruises every week doing this, but that’s just normal. Normal is good.”

Rookie steals the show at Oakdale rodeo

OAKDALE, CA – So much for the notion of delayed gratification.Brennon Eldred, an 18-year-old Hill College (Hillsboro, TX) freshman, earned his first professional bull riding title at the Oakdale Saddle Club Rodeo April 14, just six appearances and 55 days into his tenure as a PRCA card holder. He rode west from his home in Oklahoma with Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifiers Cody Whitney and Trevor Kastner, then beat both his hosts, 2007 World Champion Wesley Silcox and a half-dozen other Wrangler NFR veterans. “I’ve known Cody and Trevor since I first started in the sport,” said Eldred, of Purcell, OK, “I’ve grown up learning from them. They were really excited for me.” Eldred had an 85-point ride on Flying U Rodeo’s Holy Slinger on April 13 and then had to sweat it out until after Silcox, Steve Woolsey, Ardie Maier and Chandler Bownds had their turns the following day before he knew for sure that he had won the first-place check worth $3,107. 6 Just Bucking News

“That’s going straight into my bank account,” Eldred said, “so it’s there to help keep me out on the road.” He was nearly as happy with the commemorative buckle that came with the win. Eldred arrived in the Central Valley wearing the buckle he won at a non-sanctioned rodeo in Wills Point, TX, last April, and it didn’t have all that much sentimental value to him. Although he won at Wills Point, Eldred broke his pelvis in three places and injured his hamstring there, putting him on the sidelines for six months and preventing him from qualifying for the College National Finals Rodeo this summer. “I needed a new buckle,” Eldred said. In stark contrast to newcomer Eldred, Oakdale had three events won by reigning world champions – Luke Branquinho in the steer wrestling (9.2 seconds on two head), saddle bronc rider Jesse Wright (87 points) and tie-down roper Tuf Cooper (16.6 seconds on two head). The other champions in this $128,753 rodeo, the first on the California spring calendar, were bareback rider Seth Hardwick (84 points), team ropers Coleman Proctor and Caleb Twisselman (10.3 seconds on two head) and barrel racer Tiany Schuster (17.80 seconds). Jim Ross Cooper was the all-around champion with $1,485 earned in team roping and tie-down roping.

Eights are wild for Vezain in Red Bluff

RED BLUFF, CA. – Crazy Eights is the name of a popular card game, but it also described J.R. Vezain’s wildly-successful weekend. The Cowley, WY, bareback rider scored 88 points twice – winning both the Red Bluff Round-up, a silver stop on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour, presented by Justin Boots, and the Bucs Days ProRodeo in Corpus Christi, TX – earning more than $13,000 in the process. “It was a huge weekend for me; I got really good horses at both rodeos – both won a round at the NFR last year,” Vezain said of his luck drawing two top-caliber mounts. “The funny thing about it was, my traveling partner, R.C. Landingham, was 88 at Lakeside to win there. So the eights were all over the place for our rig.” The horse Vezain drew in Red Bluff – Flying U Rodeo’s Comanchero – carried Will Lowe to a round win and, you guessed it, 88 points at the 2012 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Vezain knew exactly what he was in for when he saw his name next to Comanchero on the draw list. “I get a big old smile on my face when I draw a horse like that,” he said. “I had never been on him, but I had seen a bunch of guys win rodeos on him, including at the NFR. I knew I had a great opportunity and didn’t waste it. It’s a great chance to see a bunch of points when you get a horse like that.” Vezain covered Frontier Rodeo Company’s Times Up at Corpus Christi for his second win of more than $6,000 for the weekend. After making his first Wrangler NFR appearance last year, and now moving much closer to first place in the world standings, he is thinking big things for 2013. “I think if you’re not telling yourself that it’s the year to win a world title, you’re kidding yourself, because you have to have that mindset that you can do it,” Vezain said. “When you’re hot, you’re hot, and you keep a positive attitude and every time you put your hand in the rigging you think you’re going to win.” His goals remain clear, and winning July-type money in April is just adding to his bankroll and confidence. “The big goal is being in the top 15 at the end of the season, so the more money you can put in your pocket early, the easier it is come the summer run,” Vezain said. “The faster you can earn enough to qualify for the NFR, the less stress on you later on; then you can ride free and easy and have a lot of fun.”

When Cowboys, Were King

I was born in 1944, in a much more simple time I remember growing up in the fifties, when a movie was only a dime In those days we called it a picture show, and westerns were the thing That’s what I did, when I was a kid, ‘When Cowboys, Were King’ Most of us had a six shooter, and a holster made to match Some of us had cowboy boots, and maybe a cowboy hat I would swing up on my stick horse, sometimes I would even sing That’s what I did, when I was a kid, ‘When Cowboys, Were King’ Cowboys and indians, man alive, that was the game to play We would hide behind trees, crawl in the weeds, almost everyday Bang, bang, I got ya, the other would fall on the ground Count to ten, get up again, and fight another round Cap pistols blasting everywhere, it still makes my old ears ring That’s what I did, when I was a kid, ‘When Cowboys, Were King’ And you know not one of us, ever grew up, and ended up in jail Playing with cap guns, didn’t lead us astray, as far as I can tell I raised my children the very same way, and let them do their thing The way I did, when I was a kid ‘When Cowboys, Were King 2-1-04 Just Bucking News 9

Twenty-four year old Caleb Ruyle started riding calves at home at a young age. “We had some cows at the house and some old bulls, so I started getting on calves and it kind of escalated from there,” said Ruyle. “I did Illinois Junior Rodeo for a couple of years in junior high and then went to open bullridings.” Caleb and girlfriend, Danielle Staples, have a bunch of horses. Danielle is a barrel racer and Caleb trains horses and is in construction. He goes to PBR Touring Pros and just got his PRCA card. “Of course, I ride in the NFPB, they aren’t far from my house and they treat me real, real good.” said Caleb. “I really looked up to Lane Frost, for the way he rode and what he did,” Caleb said. The four-time NFPB Finals Qualifier said, “I just try to focus on riding, just staying on my bulls. I just go through mental preperation, it’s mainly all about focus. I try to stay focused on what I want. Focus on the small picture instead of the big ones. I get on a lot of practice bulls. There is a practice pen down the road from my house, where we buck a lot of bulls.”

Roughstock Rhetoric

by Roy Graber

Jim Norick Arena still provides top-notch rodeo action, great memories In this issue, you can read my account of one of the biggest events in professional rodeo – the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo. Formerly the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo, it’s a production I had long wanted to see. However, for years, it was held in Pocatello, Idaho, which is a pretty huge jaunt from where I live. But for the last several years, it has been held at a location much closer to me – Oklahoma City. More specifically, it is held in the Jim Norick Arena at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds. I can hardly think of a better place for it to be held. There’s just so much rodeo lore in that arena. As a youngster, there was something just magical about that place, which at the time, seemed so huge. And having all the big names of the sport there and accessible to the fans, made it all the more special. Of course at that time, it was the home of the National Finals Rodeo. Years would pass and the NFR would move to the Myriad, also in Oklahoma City, and later to the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. But luckily, the Jim Norick Arena still has some great championship events there. The RNCFR was an outstanding event, and one that I hope stays there. Likewise, the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds is also the home to one of my other favorite championship rodeos, the International Professional Rodeo Association’s International Finals Rodeo. There, I have seen some great hands year-in and year-out, with many returning consistently over the course of the decade. I’ve also got to watch some outstanding competitors early in their careers, who have moved onto richer associations. Among the top hands at past IFRs have been Cord McCoy, Justin McDaniel, Matt Bright and Austin Meier. Thanks, Oklahoma City, for all you have done to help keep high caliber rodeos there, nearly three decades removed from the NFR’s departure. *** While at the RNCFR, I had the privilege to meet Bob Stephens, the new managing editor of the ProRodeo Sports News. Interestingly enough, he told me he didn’t have really any prior knowledge of rodeo, but had made the transition from covering traditional sports and local government. I think this is great. In hiring a rodeo newby, that just adds to the number of journalists with a good understanding of the sport. Do a Google News search for rodeo, and see how many uninformed writers there are when it comes to rodeo. Now as the rodeo community gained another good journalist, it lost another. I was sad to learn of Dwayne Erickson’s passing. The Canadian writer set a standard that all rodeo reporters should want to match. I never met Mr. Erickson, but I admired his writing style and his knowledge of the sport. *** Back on the topic of the RNCFR and the Sam Norrick arena, I will mention that after the final perf of the rodeo, I caught part of a concert by country music performer Chris Cagle. While I went there for the rodeo, it poses the question of how many people were there to see the rodeo or the concert. All in all, it’s about entertainment, and if you can combine those to put fannies in the seats, that’s all the better. While attending rodeos over the years, I can think of how a bonus of going was to hear some of the great concerts that followed – ones by the likes of Roy Clark, Brad Paisley, Charlie Daniels, Sawyer Brown, Diamond Rio, Doug Supernaw and Pat Green. But whether you are more into music or into roughstock competitions, I want to plug an upcoming event that should fill either need. The Rock N Country Fest, May 31-June 1 in Winfield, Kan. Saturday afternoon will feature a bull riding competition. Musically, the festival will on Friday feature a time when hair metal ruled, with FireHouse and Warrant. Saturday is a throwback to a time when country music really was country, headlined by David Lee Murphy and Little Texas. It should be a good time. Just Bucking News 15

92nd Annual Red Bluff Round Up By Tracye Dethero

The 92nd Annual Red Bluff Round Up was held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 19, 20 and 21st at the Tehama District Fair Grounds in Red Bluff, CA. This rodeo is one of the biggest rodeos in the state and a silver stop on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour. The final total amount taken home overall by cowboys and cowgirls has yet to be announced. Though rest assured, there are happy cowboys and cowgirls in California. Friday, April 19th, was a night performance, and what a show it was in the bareback riding. Morgan Heaton of Paradise, UT had the high score of the night, with 83 points on Growney Rodeo’s 355 Juice Queen. Orin Larsen of Twin Falls, ID followed with a ride for 82 points. Add in some more amazing bucking stock, and you have cowboys making a run for the money. In a three way tie with 79 points each were Jason Havens of Prineville, OR, Wes Stevenson of Lubbock, TX and Will Lowe of Canyon, TX. Cody DeMers of Kimberly, ID with 78 points followed their efforts. Following the steer wrestling, it was time for two rounds of saddle bronc riding. The first rider out of the chutes was Jacobs Crawley of College Station, TX. He rode Western Rodeos X162 for 83 points. Jessee Wright of Milford, UT rode a Four Star Rodeo horse named Boogie for 82 points. This is the first year that Jeff and Terry Davis of Four Star Rodeo have brought stock to the Red Bluff Round Up. Following Jessee Wrights 82 point ride, Jacobs Crawley’s brother, Sterling Crawley was 79 points and third place for the evening. Besides being brothers, Jacobs and Sterling Crawley are traveling partners. Sterling does the planning and scheduling of the rodeos the two will attend. “I’m more meticulous than my brother. He is a free spirit, but we compliment one another and we work together as a team,” said Sterling. “Jacobs is a great bronc rider. He is three years younger than me and he rides ten times better. He has so much natural ability, it’s ridiculous. It makes guys like me that have to work at it, hate him. But like I said, he is my brother so I love every minute of it.” In the bull riding, Chandler Bounds of Lubbock, TX rode for 88 points on S917 Fire Fox, owned by Growney Rodeo. Second place was Kaycee Rose of Clovis, CA with 87 points on +811 Rockaholic, also by Growney Rodeo. In third place, was Bryce Brown of Greenview, CA with 86 points. Following his efforts was Shane Proctor of Grand Coulee, WA with 80 points. Proctor also tied with three other riders in the saddle bronc riding with 78 points. Friday nights performance was sponsored by Tri-Counties Bank of Red Bluff. Saturday’s rodeo started with the official Grand Entry. Arena Director, Mike Growney lead the members of the Red Bluff Round Up Association into the arena, along with rodeo queens from around California and Nevada. Announcers Wayne Brooks and Bob Tallman, both of Texas, were on hand to make the day exciting as they announced the different events. Out of the chute in the first event was the bareback riding, where Winn Ratliff of Leesville, LA rode Flying U Rodeos -684 Wet Feather for the coveted eight seconds scoring 82 points on his ride. Ratliff was the second rider out of the chutes out of 15 riders in the section. Following his ride was Kaycee Field of Spanish Fork, UT with 79 points on Western Rodeo’s X86 Bit of Simon. Mickey Downare of Hartsel, CO also brought his game face and put 78 points on the leader board for the day. Casey Colletti of Pueblo, CO 77 points, Seth Hardwick of Laramie WY 74 points, and last but not least, a three way tie for sixth place with 72 points each were Zach Curran of Pavillion, WY, Evan Jayne of Marseille, France and Jessy Davis of Power, MT. Saddle up your horses, we are going to have a bit of saddle bronc news, as the second day kicks off in the event. Chad Ferley of Oelrichs, SD went for a fast paced ride on Growney Rodeo’s -308 Gypsy Soul for 80 points. Following his ride, Levi Berry of Morgan, UT rode for 78 points and Samuel Kelts of Millarville AB, Canada scored 76 points. Tying for forth place 16 Just Bucking News

Clayton Foltyn

were Lyle Welling, of Crawford, NE and Jesse Kruse of Great Falls, MT with 75 points. Bring out the Budweiser Clydesdales and lets sing and dance our way around the arena in time to the music, back to the bucking chutes for a bit of bull riding where Eric Layton of Red Bluff, CA and Dusty Tuckness of Apache, OK were literally working hard to save cowboys as rank bulls bucked off one cowboy after another. Cody Campbell of Summerville, OR scored 90 points on +715 Glory Days, a well known Growney Rodeo bull. Following soon after was steven peebles Travis Atkinson, of Lehi, UT on Western bobby mote Rodeo’s Super Bull. In third place was Clayton Foltyn of Winnie, TX with an exciting 86 point ride on +721 Cowboy Deluxe by Growney Rodeo. Cowboy Deluxe was literally on his two hind hooves for most of the ride as cowboy protectors stayed close incase they needed to move in to take care of business. Following his efforts were Cole Echols of Elk Grove, LA with 81 points, Dakota Beck of Nesa, WA with 79 points and sixth was Wesley Silcox, of Santaquin, UT with 78 point ride on 720 Ugly Time by Growney Rodeo. These six great rides finished out the day of rodeo fun, along with country artist Neal McCoy in concert that evening. The days events were sponsored by Rabobank of Red Bluff. Sunday was Tough Enough to Wear Pink day at the rodeo, sponsored by Haleakala Ranch and St. Elizabeth Community Hospital, the third and final day of the 92nd Red Bluff Round Up. As the wind had finally died down over the past three days, a lone airman parachuted into the arena with a red, white and blue parachute, carrying the American Flag. This is one of the beautiful yearly traditions of the Red Bluff Round Up. There is nothing like seeing the American Flag soaring through the air, rippling in the wind as Lee Greenwood’s song ‘Proud to be an American’ plays. The flag was then held by the Red Bluff Round Up Association members during the singing of the National Anthem. After the grand entry, the final day of the Red Bluff Round Up began with the bareback riding. Winning the round in the bareback riding on Sunday was JR Vezain, of Cowley, WY on Flying U Rodeo Company’s 410 Comachero with 88 points. Following his ride was Steven Peebles of Redmond, OR on 402 Nest Egg from Flying U Rodeo Company with 79 points and R.C. Landingham of Pendleton, OR with a 75 point ride. Antics by Slim Garner were also a high light of the rodeo as he spun his air taxi around the arena with a passenger hanging on for dear life. That brought the crowd to its feet. Garner had fun with the crowd, along with barrel man, JJ Harrison, who danced up a storm and played football with kids in the stands. Following one of Slim’s acts, it was time for a bit of saddle bronc riding. Bradley Harter of Weatherford, TX was the first cowboy to make the eight second buzzer with 81 points on a horse named Lady Killer by NW Rodeo. Following his ride was Chet Johnson who received a re-ride after being fouled in the chute. On Johnson’s second horse, he scored an 81 on 460 Holy Hoppin Hell from Growney Rodeo. Tyler Corrington of Hastings MN was the next cowboy to cover his horse, 918 Hail Mary also one of the horses that came from Growney Rodeo. Finally, it came down to the last few saddle bronc riders, one of which was Cort Scheer of Elsmere, NE who made the days high point ride with 85 points on Flying U’s 354 Last Call. He also won the saddle bronc event for the Red Bluff Round Up. Bring on the bulls….. Score: Bulls 18, Cowboys 2. Half way through the first section of bull riding, Nevada Newman of Melstone, MT rode 801 On the Rocks by Growney Rodeo for 76 points. In the second section of bull riding, Jordan Spears of Redding, CA rode Black Cat by Rosser Rodeo for 66 points. The final event of the rodeo was the legendary Wild Ride, where saddle bronc riders dress up in costumes and compete to see who will take home the bragging rights until next year. Cort Scheer dressed up as a woman, and won the event. However, there were also bears, strippers, beer boxes and other such costumes that were worn at the event. As the 92nd Red Bluff Round Up came to a close, buckles and checks were awarded to the winners. Just Bucking News 17

Championship Bull Riding Hosts Event In West Texas Championship Bull Riding (CBR) will host an event in West, Texas, June 1, 2013. The “First Responder’s Memorial CBR Benefit” will benefit the West Volunteer Fire Department – Special Victims Fund which will assist the victims of a catastrophic explosion that occurred at a fertilizer facility in April. CBR previously worked with the West Fair and Rodeo Committee to produce Bullfest in West, a tremendously popular Horizon Series event held annually for the last two years in June. Tragically, one of the directors responsible for Bullfest in West, William “Buck” Uptmor, was one of the first responders killed in the explosion. After hearing of the heartbreaking events, CBR management decided to take matters into their own hands and help the community of West by allowing the event to continue as a benefit. “We are tremendously touched by the events that have transpired in West. These are our neighbors and our friends. We knew we could not stand by. We had to take action and help,” stated CBR Chairman, Benny Cude. The entire production of the event will be donated, everything from stock to tickets, as well as all proceeds will benefit the West Volunteer Fire Department – Special Victims Fund. In addition Cleo Franklin, Mahindra USA - Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Planning made a special announcement, “Mahindra is humbled and honored to partner with Championship Bull Riding for the ‘First Responder’s Memorial CBR Benefit’ to support the West Volunteer Fire Department and the West community. Mahindra has been a long-time partner with the CBR and when they shared their plans to help West, we wanted to do our part as well to help the victims and their families of this tragedy in our home state of Texas. Mahindra will donate our industry-redefining Mahindra Max 22 professional-grade tractor with all proceeds going to the West Volunteer Fire Department – Special Victims Fund. The ‘First Responder’s Memorial CBR Benefit’ is an example of people and organizations coming together to help West recover, rebuild and RISE from this tragic event.” “What the CBR has offered to do for us is amazing, “stated Mark Cunningham, a West Fair and Rodeo Vice President. Cunningham, also the close friend of “Buck” continued, “These have been the longest two weeks of our lives. This gives us all something to look forward to, a little normalcy, which is what we are needing now. Hopefully, it will help us all to begin the healing process.” Championship Bull Riding has also launched “Buy a Ticket for West”- a fundraising campaign on the CBR Website, www.CBRBull.com/donate,that gives everyone the opportunity to make a donation. All the money donated to the “Buy a Ticket for West” will go towards the purchase of tickets for the community of West. Proceeds raised by “First Responder’s Memorial CBR Benefit” will be donated to the West Volunteer Fire Department- Special Victims Fund. PRCA Day Camp a huge success for kids

On Saturday, April 6, the 4th annual PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) rough stock camp was held at Growney Ranch in Red Bluff, CA. According to Camp Coordinator, Julie Jutten of the PRCA, there were approximately 42 cowboys and cowgirls that came out to learn about the sport of rodeo. Champions such as saddle bronc rider, Nick LaDuke, bull rider, Justin Andrade and bareback rider, Joe Ketter were on hand to teach the students. The camp was hosted by the Red Bluff Round Up Committee. The cowboys and cowgirls were taught each aspect of the individual events and learned from the ground up, from tying knots in bull ropes, to checking saddles to make sure they are safe to be used. Hunter Wilhite Saddle bronc rider, Nick LaDuke, of Red Bluff had a group of five students and tries out taught them the fundamentals of the LaDuke’s sport, starting with learning the parts saddle. of the saddle and how to check it for the proper sizing, potential damage that could occur in a ride and how to warm up a saddle before a ride. “Teaching the saddle bronc section of the camp, helped me to fill in the missing link to be able to break down each aspect of riding bucking horses,” said LaDuke. “I have been riding rough stock since I was 13 years old and no one had ever taught me about what to do and what not to do with my equipment or my technique. The best advice that I could give the kids is to focus on life, the facts of life, such as who you are inside. Who you are inside is who you are going to be and who you are going to attract into your life.” The camp was also a learning adventure for LaDuke, as he has never had the chance to articulate all of the equipment. “The camp was a learning experience for me, which makes it good mental training for myself to use in the future,” said LaDuke. In the past years, LaDuke qualified for the California Circuit Finals and has competed at the College National Finals Rodeo. He also won the Mesquite ProRodeo Series in the saddle bronc riding in 2012. LaDuke is hoping to ride his way back into the top 30 this season and then continue on making his way to the National Finals Rodeo within the next two years. “I enjoyed being able to get on the bucking dummies and actually put what I learned to use,” said Hunter Wilhite of Red Bluff. “It was a neat experience.” After a lunch and a motivational talk by the three instructors, Dr. Ricco Dotson, a member of the Justin Sports Medicine Team, talked about injuries and injury prevention.

Rounding out the day, all students in the individual events were able to get on different bucking machines to learn how to spur and mark out their horses and spur their bulls. They were also taught a section on chute procedure which proved to be a valuable lesson in safety. “I am hoping that the kids will develop the same passion for the sport that I do,” said bareback rider, Joe Ketter of Red Bluff, who has been teaching at the rodeo camp for the past three years. “It is important that they learn the correct technique from the ground up.”
