Foltyn ties for Dodge City title with 94-point ride

DODGE CITY, KS – The first time bull rider Clayton Foltyn made the short round at the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo, back in 2009, he ended up with a seasonending groin injury. The second time went better. OK, it went way better. Foltyn drew a 4L & Diamond S Rodeo bull named Rustler’s Paradise and rode him for 94 points, the highest-scored ride of the 2013 PRCA season and Foltyn’s best since he was 94 in Window Rock, AZ, three years ago. It was just enough to draw Foltyn into a tie with Trevor Kastner for the two-head average title in this Wrangler Million Dollar Tour Silver rodeo with 180 points each. Foltyn, of El Campo, TX, was 86 and 94 while Kastner, of Ardmore, OK, won the first round with a 91-point ride and tied for third in the finals with an 89. “This is a great rodeo to win,” Foltyn said. “I’ve been coming here for a long time, and this is the best I’ve done.” The shared win moved Foltyn from 30th to 25th in the world standings and gives him some hope of returning to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo after a 2012 season mostly lost (25 rodeos and a world ranking of 112th) to surgeries on his right hand and hip. “I broke my right hand in Denver,” Foltyn said, “and the hip injury was a long-term thing that had made everyday life a misery.” In truth, Foltyn’s career has been a frustrating mix of high achievement, including two trips to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, and surgical procedures – hand (twice), shoulder, hip, you name it. When he is healthy, Foltyn can compete at the highest level as he demonstrated again in Dodge City where he mastered Rustler’s Paradise, a Wrangler NFR bull who reigning World Champion Cody Teel rode for 87 points and the win in Colorado Springs last month and who Chris Roundy rode for 91 points en route to the two-head title in Nampa, ID, a year ago. Foltyn had some history with the bull, too, riding him for 90 points to share the first-round win at Cheyenne (WY) Frontier Days in 2009. “I don’t know what it is about that bull that makes me have success with him,” Foltyn said. “I’ve had two high scores on him in two tries, so I like him. He’s awesome.”

Dent’s weekend push moves him off the bubble

STRATHMORE, Alberta – Steven Dent had a number in mind for the rodeo weekend of August 2-5. He wanted to make $10,000 and move his way up in the world standings, which he accomplished thanks to a big win at the Strathmore (Alberta) Stampede to close things out on Aug. 5. “I think I got pretty close to that number and it wouldn’t have been possible without this huge win at Strathmore,” Dent said of the $10,000 goal. “I’m still a long ways from where I want to be, and I need to keep winning, but this weekend helped a lot.” It shouldn’t have been much of a surprise that Dent would find his way to the winner’s circle after the draw Monday morning showed his name next to Calgary 6 Just Bucking News

Stampede’s Stampede Warrior. Dent had drawn the same horse which Jake Vold rode for 91.5 points and the win at the Ponoka Stampede on July 1. “They didn’t draw the horses until this morning, but I told my wife yesterday when we were leaving that I wanted to draw Stampede Warrior,” Dent said. “I was very excited to see I had drawn him and it all worked out. “There were a lot of good horses up here and I was going to get a good one anyways, but it seems like everybody wins a bunch of money on Stampede Warrior. I rode him really well for about six seconds and then he tried to get away from me a little bit and it was a fight until the end.” Dent’s 89-point ride earned him 171.75 points on two head and the average title. The $5,369 he totaled in Strathmore brought his weekend haul to $9,402, which included earning $1,829 in Great Falls, Mont., and another $1,308 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He also made $896 in Sydney, Iowa. “I’ve been going pretty hard since the 15th of June,” said Dent, who is poised to move into the top 10 of the Aug. 5 world standings. “I took off from March until June so I could be closer to home, and I knew there were so many good summer rodeos I was going to have a chance to win at. When you get into a groove in the summer and are riding and drawing well, you can make up a lot of ground in a hurry.” Making the win even sweeter was the fact that his wife, Kay, and 6-month-old son Cylas were in attendance in Strathmore. Dent says having his loved ones with him on the road is a special time he cherishes. “I hate every second I’m away from the house when they are there, and it sure makes it a lot more fun to be on the road when I can have them with me,” he said. “With all the travel during this time of year it’s hard to see your family sometimes, but it is very nice to be able to spend a week with them.”

Jacket fits Davis perfectly in Lovington

LOVINGTON, NM – Jessy Davis wasn’t cold at the Lea County Fair & PRCA Rodeo, but he certainly was hoping for a jacket. His wish was granted when he drew Carr Pro Rodeo’s Dirty Jacket at the Silver rodeo on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour, presented by Justin Boots. The pair teamed up for 87 points and a muchneeded win for the Power, MT, bareback rider.

Old saddle makes everything easier for Harter

HERMISTON, OR – Sometimes it’s the simplest things that make the biggest difference. Since Bradley Harter got his old saddle back from the repair shop about a month ago, he’s gone from being on the bubble, in danger of missing out on an eighth trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, to “The last couple weeks I’ve been needing a push to something approaching a sure thing for Vegas. get me over the top,” said Davis, who sat 17th in the It was all just a matter of having the right equipment. world standings entering the weekend of Aug. 9-11. “To a bronc rider,” Harter told syndicated columnist “I’m still going to need more, but that win certainly Brett Hoffman, “a good saddle is like a great horse helps out and it eases the pressure, too. Halstead Kansas Old Settler Days Close the gates,, close the gates!!!! The Flood is coming.

After all this time of having no rain and being in a drought, Halstead, KS was gearing up for their Old Settler Days, which included having a professional rodeo as part of the towns celebration. Then came the rain and LOTS of it. Anywhere from 7 inches over night, then adding 3 or 4 more inches each night. The rains to the north of the town were just as heavy! All that would be flowing through the Little Arkansas River, just at the towns north side, right on the edge. The flood waters were rising fast. What was saving the town from the flood waters was a levy with flood gates. Closing the flood gates makes very limited access to the small Kansas town. The rising waters also flooded the arena area. The arena was near the flood levy and the levy made for good viewing of the rodeo, but It was under LOTS of water. The committee was in a rush to find a place to move the rodeo. The rodeo would have to be set up, as in the panels, bucking chutes, and timed event chutes and it was down to crunch time. They wanted to put on a rodeo, but all the workers were busy, trying to keep the major flood waters out of the town. That took away a lot of the help to put up the fence and panels. Matt Williams of W5 Rodeo was able to find a place to put the rodeo on in town. It was the “driest” part of town, if you could say dry, but it was on a grassy area next to a manufacturing plant. The area was just the right size to put on the rodeo, so the few volunteers, that were not busy making sand bags or helping out in other parts of the town, were at the rodeo area setting up chutes and panels. There were limited bleachers for people to sit on and they had to be moved. The problem was, they couldn’t get to the bleachers to move them, because they were all nearly under water. The arena was set up with limited lighting, with portable lights, and generators. The limited lighting was due to all the other portable lights were being used in other parts of the town. Food vendors set up in the manufacturing plants parking lot that was next to the arena. The rodeo went on without any problems other than lots of water. There sure wasn’t any dust in the air that night. The floods were not going to put a damper on the festivities of the Old Settler Days. People started showing up and the sunout from all over to see the first ever rodeo in their small town. People were coming outand the sun finally came out, after many days of rain. People brought their lawn chairs or whatever they had to sit on. They were lined all around the arena. Everyone was in awe. Wow, there is a rodeo arena here and it was just a grassy field yesterday! Everyone was talking about the rodeo on grass! They had never seen this before. As the rodeo started and the first bareback was bucked out of the chutes, it was obvious, the crowd was going to enjoy the rodeo on the grass. The committee worked hard to put on the event, and wanted to make sure it was a success. And from the reactions of the crowd, it was a huge success.

Roughstock Rhetoric

by Roy Graber

New fans are often roughstock’s best promoters Sometimes it takes someone a little unfamiliar to the sport of rodeo to really spread the good word. On two occasions over the summer, I took visiting relatives to nearby performances featuring broncs, bulls and the people who try to stay on them for eight seconds. During the latter of the two occasions, I took two family members from Ohio to a bull riding event in southern Kansas. While this wasn’t their first rodeo, so to speak, rodeo productions are not a regular part of their entertainment routine. In fact, they said they couldn’t recall the last time they were at a dusty arena to cheer on the cowboys. After entering the rodeo grounds, we visited with a few friends, went to the concession stand and went to our seats. The amount of people in the bleachers was pretty comparable to the town’s population. We were off to a good start. But after a while, I started to second-guess my decision to bring them. When I expose someone to roughstock riding, I want to make sure it is a quality performance filled with the best cowboys, livestock and contract personnel. That way, I know they’ll come back and tell their friends. That evening, it didn’t appear that would be the case. The first section of bulls bucked, and even though there were some six- or seven-second rides, nobody made the whistle. It was a similar story during the second round. No matter how much the announcer tried to play up the talent of the contestants, they couldn’t quite deliver. Adding to the roughness of the performance, or so I thought, some of the barrelman’s jokes fell flat, and the banter between he and the announcer was on occasion ill-timed and awkward. But it got better. The third section brought a change. While the first two featured riders who were mostly unknown outside the region, the final section brought out several qualifiers for the NFR, IFR and CBR World Championships. And that experience and talent was not wasted, with a number of qualified rides. A ride in the high 80s took the top spot. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I was maybe too harsh as a critic. The following day, we got to talking about the previous evening. And the visitors had some good things to say: “It was a lot of fun.” “That’s what America is all about.” “This was a classic example of what people in a Midwestern small town do on a Saturday night.” Will they come back to the same bull riding event if it coincides with another visit? Absolutely. And you can rest assured they will be telling other people about how much fun they had at a bull riding event in Small Town, America on a Saturday night. The Meaning of a True Cowboy: A Tribute to George Marshall, JR by Cindy O’Neall

August 23, 2013 - George Marshall, JR, one of the greatest men I know, made his final ride here on earth. Not many people were aware of it, but George had been battling cancer for several years. Many people were surprised at his passing. Because of his robust love for life you would never know what he was going through. No matter how bad he felt or how much a treatment or surgery had knocked him down, he got back up and kept going. He did not want anyone to know or treat him any different. That is part of what made him so great. He truly reflected the meaning of “Cowboy Up”. It is a well known fact, in the business, that Mr Marshall paved the way for the sport of bull riding to be what it is today. Before the PBR, Extreme, BRO, etc, he brought his Super Bull Tour to us all. George gave many entertainers, such as Tim McGraw, their start and was also with Chris Ledoux at his final concert. What made George different from most people who attempted to produce events was his passion for the sport and the fact that he genuinely cared about the contestants, fans, and people who worked for him. His mind worked 24/7 on how to make each event better for both fans and contestants. George put the “show” in showmanship. 14 Just Bucking News

George touched the lives of so many people it would be impossible to list, but you know who you are. If you met him you would remember that smile and warm personality. If you were lucky enough to have worked or been on tour with him you will never forget the stories, road trips, pranks, hard work and comradeship. This is evident in the words of Tricia Smith, PBR Marketing Representative, that we worked several events with this past year. She sent me this message this week “I can’t believe I only got to know him for a little while, but what a great little while that was. I wonder if he had any idea how important he was to so many people. Probably not. He was as humble as he was amazing.” This pretty much says it all. Nothing meant more to George than his love for his family. He left behind his mother, Judy Marshall; one daughter, Tonya Gifford; two grandchildren, Bow and Holley Willis; one sister, Dianne Gillit; and two brothers, Jerry and Jimmy Marshall. His eyes would shine when he talked about how proud he was of grandchildren Holley and Bow. It was this love that kept George going when things got tough for him. It would take a series of novels to tell all the stories and memories that we all have from our experiences with George. Those of us who were Blessed to work with him these last few years will always have him with us in a special place in our hearts forever. Just like George did on each event he just went to Heaven ahead of us to make sure the arena would be set up for us when we get there. An awesome tribute to George Marshall was the tremendous turn out at his Celebration of Life and the meaningful words of the people closest to him.

“Thank you for taking me on a adventure for the past 6 years, for all the laughs and happy tears. For showing us what true cowboy attitude and way was, and believing in each of us and teaching us to believe in ourselves. Oh and I won’t ever forget its not pronounced Pine Knot Boo Yay and it ain’t a form of Cajun wine! LOL! You made us all feel like superstars thank you my friend.” Jason Gibbs--Bull Fighter

“Words can’t describe how incredibly blessed my family and I feel tonight. Daddy’s memorial was amazing and I thank each and every one of you who came and helped us celebrate his life. Rest well George Marshall.” Tonya Gifford—George’s daughter “Gonna miss you my friend!! Thank you lord for sharing him with us!!” Casey Deardorff--Soundman

“As I looked around at a sold out crowd tonight. I saw the spot light go to chute 6. Tonight you were our feature cowboy! And now you get to take in every event from the greatest seats in the house!” Scott Grover--PBR Announcer

“I’m better today than I was yesterday” George Marshall 16 Just Bucking News

ABT MEMBER PROFILE By Pam Treadway

Rowdy Rice

It is said that anything worth having is worth waiting for, these days Rowdy Rice is experiencing that cliché first hand ! Two things that seem to be consistently evident in sports today, athletes compete longer as their careers seem to last longer, and the age of top ranked athletes is also getting younger and Rowdy Rice is no exception. Like many other cowboys today, he has been pursuing his dream of becoming a professional bull rider since he was a small boy. Rowdy got his start in bull riding coming up thru the ranks of high school rodeo where he was two time State High School Champion. With a natural talent for the event, he found himself entering sanctioned rodeos at the young age of 16 and often times placing at their tougher events. After having success at the rodeos, Rowdy attempted to purchase his American BullRiders Tour card, much to his disappointment, he was declined since he was not yet 18. Waiting patiently until he became of age to purchase his card, Rowdy burst onto the ABT scene with a bang in 2011. Since purchasing his American BullRiders Tour card, there has been no looking back for this young cowboy. To date, Rowdy has placed at and won several ABT approved events, including winning the ABT Finals Average Winner at last year’s Finals. Rowdy has been the only cowboy to make a qualified ride on the IPRA’s former Bucking Bull of the Year, “Wolverine” for a 92 point ride. His peers will tell you, “he is always up-beat with a consistently positive attitude.” These days Rowdy finds himself living his dream, he is presently sitting in the top five in the ABT standings and currently ranked number two in the International Pro Rodeo Association’s World standings. If you’re judged by the company you keep, Rowdy’s hauling partners are accomplished bull riders in their own right. Good friend Jay Miller is a former National Champion in the American BullRiders Tour and Levi Whitlock is currently in the number one spot in the ABT standings. For now, Rowdy is hitting as many events as he can…staying healthy and maintaining a positive attitude is on the top of his list. So, when all is said and done, Rowdy Rice can attest…patience is a virtue. Set your goals high, and with a little luck and A LOT of talent, the rest will be HISTORY. Left: Photo by Becky Pearman

American BullRiders Tour Cumming, Georgia Annual Event As the song goes, “rain is a good thing,“ but we are beginning to think, enough already! For the past 7 years the Southeast region has been suffering the wrath of a gripping drought, so the rain has been a good thing, but it certainly has made some rodeo events slightly less than “perfect” conditions. Everyone is looking forward to the annual Cumming, Georgia ABT approved Bull Riding event to be held October 12th and 13th during the one of the South’s best Agriculture Fairs. The facility is a state of the art covered arena and it will certainly be nice to not have to fret about the impending weather. Each year the ABT event adds $3,000 in prize money and plays to capacity crowds each night. Books open October 7th a 3 PM. Call 864 682-9578 to enter.

Series dates Carousel Farms Raleigh, NC Sept 3-Tuesday night Books open Aug 29-7 PM Call 919 872-6898

national bucking bulls of australia 26 Just Bucking News

national bucking bulls of australia Started in 2007 by three men who saw the need for an association to better the bucking stock, for the rodeo industry, in Australia. Ricky Parker, Dallas Weller and Dean Weller started the National Bucking Bulls of Australia in Brisbane, the capitol of Queensland, in the southwest. The first event was a futurity, where there were eight bulls entered. The event was won by Chopper Choc, owned by Ross and Jan Hamilton and Frank Biddle. The other contractors were Jason M’Kinnon, Jacey Chapman, Terry Oneil and Danny M’Clauglin. At this stage they have about 50 bull breeders and are hoping to expand on this. NBBA produces about eight Photos by Craig Voll events a year in New South Wales and in Queensland of the Rockhampton places, such as Stroud, Upper Horton, Roma, Charters (Rocky) Futurity 2011 Towers, Killarney and Rockhampton. The four board members, Dean Weller, Dallas Weller, Ross Hamilton and Ricky Parker, are working to expand to 12 or thirteen events a year along withthe Finals. “We do futurities and classics at this stage,” said Ricky Parker. “We are looking at doing derbys and maybe down the track junior futurities.” Just Bucking News 27
