Thank you to all the buyers at the Designer Genes Sale over the last five years!

It is difficult to believe that we have not been in Shrewsbury in person for this event for two years now, for obvious reasons. Last year we stood in Shrewsbury, auctioneering to an almost empty room except a handful of phone bidders and one computer. We were blown away with the success of our 2020 sale, especially due to the format we used. Having said that, being in Shrewsbury without a crowd brought mixed emotions, so being able to welcome you all back to Shrewsbury is something we are extra excited about. Over the last five sales we have learnt a lot about what prospective buyers look for from Designer Genes. Probably the biggest learning is it is not about numbers. That is why over the past two years we have reduced our offering slightly to between 15-20 females. This allows us to be even more selective in the quality of our offering, giving buyers the confidence that Designer Genes truly is the best sale of Hereford females in Europe. This year we also welcome four new consignors to Designer Genes family. The beauty of the Hereford breed is that it is full of dedicated breeders, many of whom have started producing serious quality stock in a relatively short space of time. We even have first time consignors with entries that are descendants of animals purchased at DGS –proof that the genetics we sell go on to produce the goods for our customers. As we return to some form of normality, we now need to look ahead to the future ofthe beef industry. I think we can all agree that the Hereford breed is perfectly placed to capitalise on the changes we are beginning to see. The Hereford will undoubtedly begin to form an even more crucial role in farming in the UK as producers look to produce more from less, and consumers begin to ask for quality more than ever. Designer Genes presents anyone looking to capitalise on this movement with a great opportunity to get into the breed with the best the breed has to offer, getting them to the top quicker!

Josh Dowbiggin Sale Manager 07447 412123 joshdowbiggin@outlook.com

We look forward to welcoming you to Shrewsbury on the 11th December, and as always if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us. Jonny Dymond Auctioneer 07803 412617 jonnyd@hallsgb.com

What a sweet heifer to kick off our 2021 sale with. Laurel is the first of two females from first time consignors S Hawkins. Sired by the renowned Netherhall 1 Oz Daffy M024 and out of a SMH Liga daughter, the performance figures on this female are extremely exciting. She is Top 10% for 200, 400 and 600 Day Weights, Carcass Weight, Eye Muscle, IMF and Calving Ease (Daughters). The Bosa Laurel cow family was one of the most prolific breeding lines at Bosa, and this heifer’s pedigree contains some really interesting sires including Barbern 1 Gargantuan, Reydon 1 Phoenix and Solpoll 1 Boomerang. Laurel 46 exhibits great thickness throughout whilst maintain femininity and great locomotion. To top it all off she is scanned in-calf to the 5,500gns Grifford 1 Try (Fabb 1 Northern Star x Coley 1 Clara 315) – this girl is just waiting to become one of the best cows in your herd!

Opportunities to own a daughter of two-time UK Horned Female of the Year Auckvale Lively 1058H are limited to say the least. Her dam is one of the best uddered females in the breed and is still going strong after her 10th calf – proof of builtin longevity in these genetics. Sired by Auckvale Kalgoorlie 1322K – National Senior Champion Bull at his only outing! This female won her class in the National Hereford Virtual Show, with judge Erica Halliday commenting “A super heifer that will develop into a magnificent cow”. Auckvale have never missed a year consigning to Designer Genes, and we always wonder how they will top the previous year, but this female demonstrates their commitment to bringing something seriously special to DGS. This heifer presents an unreal chance to add another dimension to your breeding programme. Scanned incalf to Ervie Classic – the perfect way to add performance into this exciting genetic package.

The last chance to take home a Bosbury girl today. Again, sired by Netherhall 1 Oz Daffy M024 but this time out of a Eldersfield 1 Carter dam, and again going back to Reydon 1 Phoenix. The carcass numbers behind this girl are seriously impressive. Rosa is Top 1% for Eye Muscle and Beef Yield, and Top 5% for Carcass Weight, IMF and both breed indexes. The mix of performance genetics from Oz Daffy crossed with the proven nature of Bosa genetics on her dams side has really worked wonders on this female. Not forgetting her perfect markings and dark cherry red colour, Rosa will certainly be capable of producing some show winning and sale topping animals. Great performance numbers, a stacked pedigree and perfect phenotype with a sprinkling of breed character, there is a great future ahead of Rosa 52. Free of the bull.

The Thorne family have arrived at Designer Genes, and what a way to make an entrance for the current National Herd of the Year. Sired by the Vexour 1 Palmer bull who is having a big impact at Studdolph & Glenvale, and from the famous Polly line, plus Romany 1 Fulcrum in her dam’s pedigree – you just know what this female can produce in her future breeding career. She exhibits exceptional muscling and maturity coupled with impressive weight for age and width to die for. The Thorne family have really hit the headlines this year with several sale topping animals and even produced the Reserve Supreme beast at the 2021 National Poll Show. These genetics have been proven time and time again, and this young female will undoubtedly follow in the footsteps of her former stable mates. It is not every day you get the chance to buy into this cow family. This is probably one of the best females ever sold from the Dendor herd. Sired by former Royal Welsh Supreme Champion Bull Gouldingpoll 1 Moonshine and the first ever daughter of Dendor 1 Ruby 25th to be sold from the herd. The maternal sister to the dam of this heifer is Dendor 1 Ruby 29th who was Female of the Year in 2018 and went on to top the Kilvrough dispersal in Autumn 2020. The power and muscling in this female are to die for, plus she is cherry red, pigmented with great markings and a super feminine structure. I will go as far as to say that this female deserves to become a donor cow in future – she has the potential to produce some seriously special progeny whatever the sire she is bred to. To own a Ruby is a rarity anyway, but a female of this calibre, whatever the cow family, is not something that happens very often. A real gem from the Dendor herd. Free of the bull.

The dam of this heifer has now produced two DGS alumni, with a half-sister to Dowager 22 being one of the high-selling females in our 2019 event. The sire of this heifer has had a tremendous year as a producer of top quality stock. His daughter Herberry 1 Lucy-Ray took two National Female Championships in Ireland and went on to sell for ⇔9000, whilst another daughter Sky High 1 Miss Allure won the Calf Show Interbreed at the English Winter Fair. This will be the last chance to invest in a Kohinoor daughter in 2021. Her maternal grandsire is Yalgoo Boulder Z250, an Australian bull that has had a big impact on the UK herdbook. Her dam is likely the best cow in the Burmill herd as time and time again she produces the goods. The Dowager family is historically a Horned line, but it has made its way into the Polled side and by the looks of this heifer that is something to be excited about. Free of the bull.

I’m not sure a pedigree can get more exciting than this. This is the first female to ever sell from the Beth family at Auckvale. The GG Dam to this heifer is WLB 36N Beth 452S who was Champion Female at the 2012 World Hereford Conference in Canada and went on to be crowned Hereford Miss World in the same year. Auckvale imported embryos from her and her daughter, creating the Beth family. Her dam is one of the best breeding cows in the Polled herd at Auckvale. Her maternal grandsire TH Untapped 425X is one of the leading sires in the United States. Her sire Ramesses is a son of the renowned Normanton Laertes and out of former National Junior Female Champion Peach 1443M. With all growth traits in the Top 5% of the breed, this female has been shown at Agri Expo and was crowned Senior Female Champion. To top off her awesome looks and lineage, she is also tested Homozygous Polled. A serious lot from seriously good cattlemen. Free of the bull.

A single entry from Moorside this year but potentially the best they’ve ever brought. Dawn 2nd is sired by the 13,000gns Coley 1 Pilot whose first two daughters sold in Designer Genes 2020 to average £7,140. The Dawn family is one of the most prolific lines in the Polled breed, and this heifer carries some really exciting sires on her maternal side to go with it, including CCR Stamina, Romany 1 Emperor and Baybridge 1 Atlas. This heifer has a total of 9 traits in the Top 20% of the breed. She has been shown successfully this year and has caught the eye of many judges and onlookers alike. A really sweet female with gorgeous looks and phenotype to die for, plus some serious lugs to top it all off. Perfection really is producing the goods at Spartan. Luke has spoken about how this female has stood out from a really young age, so when she was crowned Reserve Junior Female Champion at the National Poll Show this year it likely didn’t come as much of a surprise to the Spartan clan. Being sired by Perfection makes Polly a half-sister to the Royal Lancashire Hereford Breed Champion Spartan 1 Duchess T95. She’s not all about looks though, just look at those numbers! Top 1% for all growth rates and Top 5% for Carcass Weight and both breed indexes. You can just see this girl turning into a big powerful cow with a tidy udder and the ability to raise some belting calves – imagine the cow/calf classes you could win with this one in a few year’s time. Cracking entry from Spartan, one to certainly check out on sale day. Free of the bull.

A female that really must be seen to be believed; she is one of the most powerful females we have ever consigned. Pulham Diadem 6th was judged to be the best heifer calf in the 2021 MEAHBA Herd Competition by Richard McInnes. Her dam is producing extremely well for the Pulham herd – a fantastic cow with great scale and volume, she already has two daughters in the Pulham herd, and is part of the embryo programme at Pulham, with an embryo bull calf already selling to James & Ellen Lake. Diadem 6th is sired by Pulham Ranger who sold to Trillick & Kye Herefords in Ireland, with semen being retained for use at Pulham. The Vincent family have been crowned winners of the MEAHBA Herd Competition for the last three consecutive competitions and were runners up in the National Herd Competition in 2021. To top of this incredible offering, Diadem will be sold with 1 straw of the $42,000 Mawarra Influential (Terms of semen use to be announced). This is an unreal opportunity from the Pulham herd, do not miss it! Free of the bull.

This is a very special entry for several reasons. Not only is it the first ever DGS entry from Will Awan, but this heifer is also the granddaughter of his foundation female Moralee 1 Kate 2nd who was purchased 6,200gns in Designer Genes 2017. To top all that, she is sired by one of the best bulls in the breed Panmure 1 Henry. The combination of Henry, Knightrider and Frisky in the pedigree of this heifer has really worked its magic on this female. She also has a total of 9 traits in the Top 10% of the breed. Will has built a fantastic reputation in a very short space of time for producing high quality show stock – this heifer is no different. She is super thick throughout and is one of the most eye-catching females in the sale, plus she is dark red and really meaty. What a way to make a DGS debut for the Midford herd. Free of the bull.

(%) George and family have invested in outcross genetics right from the start of the Fardre herd and it has seriously paid off. Several purchases of Canadian genetics have meant that the Fardre cow herd is made up of some incredible female lines. The Maple family is backed up by some of the biggest bulls to come out of Canada including Remitall Super Duty 42S, Re- +1.7 mitall Keynote 20X, SHF Wonder and CB Can Doo 102Y. So, this heifer takes all those performance driven, maternal genet- Mat. ics and matches them perfectly with the power and capacity of the 13,000gns Coley 1 Pilot. Combining North American Cow Wt. and UK genetics has long been the recipe for success behind many of the best animals in this breed. This is no different (kg) for Maple V216 – she is deep, dark, thick, sweet with loads of performance. Not forgetting her awesome EBVs – a total of 10 in the Top 10% including Top 1% growth numbers. It is great to have the Morgan family back in DGS, and even better to +80 have a female from them of this quality. Free of the bull.

It was only three years ago that a 50% share in the dam of this heifer was sold at Designer Genes for 7,500gns – valuing her total worth at 15,000gns. This is the first daughter of the award-winning Coley 1 Clara 418 to ever be offered for sale. Her half-brother is already a herd sire for the Spartan herd. You can see the resemblance between dam and daughter just with her photo. She is sired by Moeskaer Vegas who has had a big impact on the Coley herd in just a few short years. She possesses one of the strongest pedigrees in the sale with big name sires like Remitall Online 122L, HF Beyond 36N, Solpoll 1 Kentucky Kid, Panmure 1 Henry and Blakelaw 1 Calzaghe. For only a January calf this female carries exceptional mass and capacity, she will take some beating next year. She’s got looks, she’s got pedigree and add to that a great set of numbers with 8 EBVs in the Top 10% of the breed, she really is the complete package. Free of the bull.

We started this sale with a first-time consignor, and we end with one too. We spotted this young heifer at Agri Expo and knew she had to come to DGS. Porton House are very quickly building a solid Hereford herd with a solid reputation. By investing in the right genetics, Paul and Vikki have propelled themselves to the fore of the breed – this heifer is proof of that. Amethyst 1st is sired by Dendor 1 Sherlock (Bakgard Keno x SMH Euro) and her dam goes back to Normanton 1 Eastern Promise and Harvie Miss Nylon 1Y (dam of Firefly 51F). She’s also Top 5% of the breed for Calving Ease Daughters. This girl will undoubtedly grow into a big, powerful heifer before she calves down and begins producing the goods. The options you have with this heifer are endless – show winner, big-time cow, donor female, maybe even all three? All we know is that you need to have this heifer marked down on sale day. Free of the bull.
