On deadline: Mockumentary
‘The Paper’ dives into a drowning local newspaper

Breaking news: a familiar mockumentary crew have picked their cameras back up and settled into a new office. From the creator of “The Office” comes “The Paper,” a new sitcom premiering its first four episodes Thursday, Sept. 4, on Peacock, with two new episodes streaming every Thursday through September 25. Set in a struggling Midwestern newspaper office, “The Paper” follows the news team and office staff as they try to keep the Toledo Truth-Teller alive.

Domhnall Gleeson (“The Patient”) stars as Ned Sampson, the paper’s new editor-in-chief, whose desperate, earnest attempts at reviving the paper yield Michael Scott-esque (Steve Carell, “The Big Short,” 2015) awkward moments in the newsroom. Reprising his role from “The Office” is Oscar Nunez (“The Lost City,” 2022) as accountant Oscar Martinez, who has left Scranton, Pennsylvania, behind for the slightly more cosmopolitan city of Toledo, Ohio, and a new kind of paper business.

Also starring in “The Paper” are Sabrina Impacciatore (“The White Lotus”), Chelsea Frei (“Animal Control”), Melvin Gregg (“Nine Perfect Strangers”), Gbemisola Ikumelo (“A League of Their Own”), Alex Edelman (“Unfrosted,” 2024), Ramona Young (“Never Have I Ever”) and Tim Key (“The Ballad of Wallis Island,” 2025).

Guest stars include Eric Rahill (“Friendship,” 2024), Tracy Letts (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”), Molly Ephraim (“Perry Mason”), Mo Welch (“Life In Pieces”), Allan Havey (“Billions”), Duane Shepard Sr. (“American Crime Story”), Nate Jackson (“Young Rock”) and Nancy Lenehan (“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”).

In an official trailer for the upcoming series, Ned introduces himself to the staff, who are largely unimpressed by a new regime at their floundering paper. The office exudes an energy that says, “Why try?” The company is more proud of its custodial paper products than the Truth-Teller, which is used inhouse as a bird cage tray liner.

Undeterred by the general malaise he’s stepped into, Ned knows what he’s working with. “It sucks,” he honestly tells one of the reporters when asked for his appraisal of the Truth Teller. “But we are going to make it better,” Ned promises. With a vision for the paper and a set of volunteers who don’t quite have the skills to execute it just yet, Ned takes stock, saying, “Seven highly motivated, tenacious Buckeyes are out there hunting for news. You’d be a fool to bet against that.”

The Truth Teller’s volunteer reporters gather their experience writing middle school essays, tweeting and participating in group chats, and set out to find stories worth telling across Toledo. Over 10 episodes, Ned hopes to transform the paper from something that’s most useful as a janitorial product to a — readable at minimum, must-read at best — source of community news.

The new series comes from television legend Greg Daniels, who adapted the original British series for the American version of “The Office,” created beloved and recently rebooted animated sitcom “King of the Hill” and produced five seasons of “The Simpsons” and the whole run of “Parks and Recreation.” Co-creator of “The Paper” is Michael Koman, who also co-created “Nathan for You” on Comedy Central with Nathan Fielder (“The Rehearsal”), so expect expert cringe comedy in the upcoming series.

The STREAM Scene

“The Runarounds” (Sept. 1)

Starring Lilah Pate, William Lipton, Marley Aliah, Maximo Salas and more, this brand-new series comes from the creators of “Outer Banks,” and follows a high school band post-graduation, as they try to harness the energy, time, dedication and talent required to achieve fame and success in the modern music industry.

“Blood & Myth” (Sept. 4)

A haunting true crime documentary that journeys deep into the Alaskan wilderness to unravel a mystery where legend and reality blur. When a series of violent crimes devastates a remote Inupiaq village, all evidence points to one suspect: Teddy Kyle Smith, a celebrated actor and respected member of the community. Upon capture, Teddy makes a startling claim ... his actions were driven by a chilling encounter with the Inukuns, sinister beings from Inupiaq lore.

Where all the top choices can be found in one place!

“Pokémon Concierge” (Sept. 4)

Season 2 follows Haru, a kind-hearted concierge learning life lessons through her daily encounters with Pokémon guests. She’s no longer a newbie concierge at the Pokémon Resort, and alongside her loyal sidekick Psyduck, they welcome guests such as Tyler, Alisa and Watanabe. Amid sunny and relaxing days at the resort, Haru receives a surprise visit from her ex-boyfriend, Kent. Dan is also checking in, accompanied by his Arcanine and a quiet sadness that follows closely behind. As Haru grows more confident in her role, she handles unexpected challenges and deepens her bond with the Pokémon.

An Oscar-rewarded trip leads to ‘Fargo’ classic corner

Filmmaking siblings Joel and Ethan Coen have earned much acclaim for their typically offbeat efforts, but their 1996 comedy-drama is in a class by itself. An Oscar nominee for best picture, the movie is being shown by MGM+ Drive-In on Sunday, Aug. 31, with Frances McDormand — who earned her own Academy Award for the film for best actress — as a pregnant sheriff who goes to the North Dakota title town to probe several murders connected to the disappearance of a car dealer’s (William H. Macy) wife (Kristin Rudrud).

It isn’t a spoiler to mention that the businessman is directly involved in the kidnapping, which many other colorful characters play roles in. The fabulous cast also includes Steve Buscemi, Harve Presnell, Peter Stormare, John Carroll Lynch, Melissa Peterman and (as himself) singer Jose Feliciano. The Coens shared an Oscar for best screenplay for the project, which inspired an anthological 2014-23 FX series that also was well-received by critics and viewers. (Kathy Bates directed the pilot for an earlier series version that didn’t sell.)

“Lilo & Stitch” (Sept. 3)

In this live-action iteration of the 2003 classic, a lonely young Hawaiian girl, Lilo (Maia Kealoha), finds herself in desperate need of some company. Hoping to adopt a dog from the local shelter, Lilo instead winds up bringing home Stitch (Chris Sanders) — an extraterrestrial entity that crash landed on Earth after escaping an outer space prison. Much to her sister Nani’s (Sydney Agudong) chagrin, Lilo quickly grows attached to her alien companion.

more retro rewinds

“Murder, She Wrote” (Start TV, Sunday, Aug. 31): Before joining “Law & Order,” Jerry Orbach was getting TV exposure on this series (and, for a while, in his own spinoff) as private eye Harry McGraw, one of his appearances being in the Season 7 episode “From the Horse’s Mouth.” He and Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) look into the discord between rival Kentucky horse owners (Kevin McCarthy, Gregory Walcott), to the annoyance of the local sheriff (Robert Donner), and their probe picks up steam after one of the men is found dead. Nanette Fabray, Maxwell Caulfield and famed attorney Melvin Belli also are guest stars.

“Lawrence of Arabia” (Turner Classic Movies, Saturday, Sept. 6): Director David Lean’s lengthy 1962 epic, named its year’s best picture at the Oscars, made Peter O’Toole a star in the title role as a British military officer who goes his own way and becomes controversial — and legendary — for his dealings with the Arab world, and particularly with Prince Faisal (Alec Guinness). Omar Sharif also saw his own star rise internationally from his work here; Anthony Quinn, Jack Hawkins, Jose Ferrer, Anthony Quayle, Claude Rains and Arthur Kennedy are among other notables featured prominently. Lean and composer Maurice Jarre were among individual winners of the picture’s seven Academy Awards.

Dutch Grand Prix set for high drama at Zandvoort

The 2025 Formula One season resumes this weekend with the Dutch Grand Prix at the high-speed Circuit Zandvoort in Zandvoort, Netherlands, promising an exciting contest of pace, strategy and endurance. With the main event scheduled for Aug. 31, all practices, qualifiers and race day air live on ESPN.

In a dominant 2025 campaign, McLaren has been leading the charge all season, entering the Dutch Grand Prix as the team to beat with championship leader Oscar Piastri and teammate Lando Norris looking to continue their strong midseason forms.

While it’s not been the season Ferrari had wanted, the team sits second in the Constructors standings, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc remaining relatively consistent this year following another solid podium finish in Belgium and a top-four finish in Hungary just prior to the summer break. The Monegasque driver currently sits fifth in the Drivers standings with 151 points, earned through five podium finishes and one pole position in 14 races. Meanwhile, teammate Lewis Hamilton sits in sixth place.

With Leclerc still searching for his first victory of the season, he remains confident in the team’s ability to execute a stronger second half and remains satisfied with the team’s plans to remain competitive until the very end — even if it means losing out on test time.

“I’m pretty sure it’s better to finish second than third,” Leclerc told Pitpass. “However, there is also the wind tunnel time,” he admits.

“This is not something we think of too much. When we are on track, we just want to finish as high up as possible, and then we’ll deal with whatever amount of hours in the wind tunnel we have,” Leclerc said.

As F1 returns from summer break, all eyes will be on Zandvoort in what is sure to be a race full of drama and potential movements in an exciting championship battle.

“This has changed my life. It’s a great show that’s more than just action. It’s a love story. It’s a workplace comedy. We’re the long shots, the lovable losers.” — John Cena of “Peacemaker” in an interview with People.

“We all knew that we had a sense of responsibility to do the best we could with the language, to do the best we could with our performance. It wasn’t easy. You had to dig deep, and even though at the beginning I was a little scared, I’m just so glad that we’re here today and very proud to stand along [Thomas] Pa’a and Jason [Momoa]. This is something dear to their hearts, something that they’ve had simmering for a while, and we’ve arrived.” — Temuera Morrison of “Chief of War” in an interview with Collider.

“No more Normies. He really has that Outcast pride. ...With him, there’s always another reason, a nefarious reason that he’s doing the things that he’s doing, even though he really does love being an outcast. It’s a weird dichotomy. And he wants Wednesday on his side.” — Steve Buscemi of “Wednesday” speaking with Deadline.
