Enter, chestburster: Invasive creatures make a crash landing in ‘Alien: Earth’
Before the events of the 1979 film “Alien” terrorized the crew of the USCSS Nostromo mid-journey back to Earth, the blue planet was also invaded by threatening life-forms. “Alien: Earth,” the new prequel series premiering on FX and Hulu Tuesday, August 12, explores the response to a mysterious ship’s crash landing into Prodigy City.
In the year 2120, the world is reigned over by a handful of corporations that crave constant technological advancement. One of them, Prodigy Corporation, is responsible for the latest leap in human-tech fusion. Cyborgs and synthetics already populate the earth and live among humans, but Prodigy is ready to unleash their prototype hybrids — immortal humanoid robots uploaded with a real human’s consciousness — into the world when the crash requires a special team to execute a recovery mission.
Wendy, portrayed by Sydney Chandler (“Sugar”), is the first hybrid child of Prodigy CEO Boy Kavalier (Samuel Blenkin, “Mary & George”). The first class of hybrids, nicknamed “The Lost Boys” by Kavalier, was made possible with the contributions of terminally ill children who agreed to donate their consciousness to the cause, a bleak picture of life in Earth’s corporate era. Kavalier’s right-hand man, Atom Eins (Adrian Edmondson, “3 Body Problem”), serves to deliver his boss’ desires, no matter the human cost.
“Alien: Earth” also stars Timothy Olyphant (“Justified: City Primeval”) as Wendy’s synthetic trainer Kirsh and Alex Lawther (“Andor”) and Diem Camille (“The Wheel of Time”) as human soldiers CJ and Siberian. Essie Davis (“The Narrow Road to the Deep North”) stars as Dame Silvia, Wendy’s human mother figure. David Rysdahl (“Fargo”) is Dame’s husband Arthur Silvia, who develops conflicted feelings about his participation in the creation of the hybrids.
Portraying the synthetics and cyborgs are Adarsh Gourav (“Guns & Gulaabs”) as Slightly, Kit Young (“Shadow and Bone”) as Tootles, Babou Ceesay (“We Hunt Together”) as Morrow, Jonathan Ajayi (“Vigil”) as Smee, Erana James (“The Wilds”) as Curly and Lily Newmark (“A Gentleman in Moscow”) as Nibs. As a voice-over states in the series’ official trailer, five life-forms were collected by the crashed ship on its extraterrestrial ventures, and it is unknown how dangerous those creatures are. What is clear is that Kavalier wants them. Wendy steps up to lead the mission on behalf of herself and Kavalier’s synthetics, saying, “We can do it. We’re fast. We’re strong. We don’t break.”
“Alien: Earth” comes from showrunner Noah Hawley, who also helmed the TV adaptation and continuation of the 1996 Coen brothers film, “Fargo.” Hawley spoke to Vanity Fair about working on the series in the midst of a global debate over the ethics of artificial intelligence, saying, “in the last 18 months, it’s become the issue of the moment. I think we’re all trying to figure it out: Can you trust it? Can you talk to it? Why is it lying to me?”

“Alien: Earth” (Aug. 12)
Based on the “Alien” movie franchise, this sci-fi series is set on Earth in 2120, two years before the events of “Alien” (1979). The series follows Wendy (Sydney Chandler), a hybrid robot, as she leads a team of tactical soldiers to a crashed spaceship on Earth, putting them face-to-face with the planet’s greatest threat.
From writer-director Noah Hawley, the cast includes Samuel Blenkin, Essie Davis, Timothy Olyphant, David Rysdahl, Kit Young, Babou Ceesay and Adarsh Gourav.
“Fixed” (Aug.

From visionary director Genndy Tartakovsky comes this adult animated comedy about Bull, an average, all-around good dog who discovers he’s going to be neutered in the morning. As the gravity of this life-altering event sets in, Bull realizes he needs one last adventure with his pack of best friends. Adam Devine, Kathryn Hahn, Idris Elba, Kari Wahlgren, Fred Armisen, Eric Bauza and Bobby Moynihan voice star.
A
popular “Hunt” tracks Sean Connery
Tom Clancy’s novels about CIA analyst Jack Ryan yielded the first film in a successful screen franchise — and the first of several actors to play the role — in “The Hunt for Red October,” the excellent 1990 submarine drama that Flix shows Saturday, Aug. 16. Alec Baldwin plays Ryan, who disputes the belief of U.S. government officials that a Soviet commander (played with typical mastery by Sean Connery) has redirected his vessel toward the United States to launch an unsanctioned nuclear attack.
With a limited amount of time to prove his hunch correct, Ryan puts himself at risk by boarding the sub (the “Red October” of the title) and questioning the commander about his true intentions as another Soviet craft bears down on them and the rest of the crew. Co-stars include Scott Glenn, James Earl Jones, Sam Neill, Tim Curry, Peter Firth, Richard Jordan and Courtney B. Vance. Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine would have later turns as Ryan in movies, with John Krasinski assuming the part in a Prime Video series.
“Iron Man and His Awesome Friends” - Season 1 (Aug. 12)
With Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) at the helm, this animated series follows Stark and his super genius best friends — Riri Williams and Amadeus Cho — as they work together to solve problems plaguing their city, tackling issues big and small. To save the day, the Iron Friends don their superpowered Iron Suits, which grant them super-strength and the ability to fly high above even the tallest skyscrapers.

“The Rookie” (UPtv, daily): As the ABC police drama approaches the start of its eighth season, repeats of its earlier episodes also make it a classic in terms of weekday television. Nathan Fillion stars as John Nolan, who becomes a Los Angeles officer at a later age than most people, having to prove himself against both the demands of the job and the generally more nimble condition of his colleagues. Fillion also is an executive producer of the show, which was inspired by the experiences of an actual L.A. cop. Co-stars include Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O’Neil and Eric Winter.
“The Rookies” (FETV, daily): Not to be confused with “The Rookie,” this show — one of the ’s earliest hits for TV mega-producers Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg — also was an ABC police drama that used Spelling’s proven formula of placing young professionals under the guidance of a seasoned veteran. In the case of this 1972-76 series, Georg Stanford Brown, Michael Ontkean (later succeeded by Bruce Fairbairn) and Sam Melville play novice Southern California cops supervised by Lt. Eddie Ryker (Gerald S. O’Loughlin). Kate Jackson, who also starred for Spelling and Goldberg in “Charlie’s Angels” after her run here, plays the Melville character’s nurse wife.

Alfred eyes double victory in Poland
A thrilling 2025 Diamond League season continues Saturday, Aug. 16, as athletes from around the world make their way to Silesian Stadium in Silesia, Poland, with all events broadcast live on FloTrack.
As the 2025 Diamond League heads to Silesia, Poland, all eyes will be on 24-year-old St. Lucian Julien Alfred, who has delivered scintillating performances all season long to further cement herself among the world’s elite sprinters in the women’s 100- and 200-meter events.
This season, Alfred has demonstrated world-class discipline and consistency throughout all her races. In one of her early 100-meter performances in Oslo Diamond League, the St. Lucian was tested early but managed to pull away to clock in a victory at 10.89 seconds, fending off elite competition that included veteran sprinter Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith.
If that wasn’t impressive enough, she followed that up at the Stockholm Diamond League on June 15, where Alfred clocked a season-best and meet record of 10.75 seconds in the 100 meters, putting up one of the fastest times in the world this year. This season, Alfred has yet to run any 100-meter race slower than 10.89 seconds — a testament to her elite level of consistency.
At 200 meters, Alfred has been equally impressive, with her best performance coming at the London Diamond League meet on July 19 when she once again proved her dominance, winning in 21.71 seconds — a meet record and current world lead for the 2025 season.
Heading into Silesia, Alfred leads the Diamond League women’s 100-meter standings with 31 points (at press time), ahead of Maia McCoy (22) and Ta Lou-Smith (19). With both sprinting events being featured in Poland, Alfred will undoubtedly enter as the heavy favourite.
Jeremy Irvine of “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” on Starz: The British actor’s movie debut came thanks to Steven Spielberg, who cast him in the lead role of the Spielberg-directed 2011 film “War Horse.”
Brittany Snow of “The Hunting Wives” on Netflix: Initially finding fame for her 19982001 work on the CBS daytime serial “Guiding Light,” she then was cast in the lead of the “American Bandstand”-inspired NBC series “American Dreams” (2002-05).

“I kind of have gone into the mindset of, ‘Alien’ is one of my favorite movies and it stands alone. And it will, you know, stand the test of time. And I think what Noah [Hawley] is doing here, which he also did on ‘Fargo,’ is he took the essence of that film and made something completely original that honors the essence of ‘Fargo,’ and that’s my hope for this, as well.” - Sydney Chandler of “Alien: Earth” in a comment with Gamespot.
“Like, Al Pacino and the mafia, it just keeps pulling me back in, I think. When we finished the series proper and Dexter put himself into self-imposed exile, I knew we may well be revisiting him at some point to find out what the hell happened to him.”
- Michael C. Hall of “Dexter: Resurrection” in an interview with Deadline.
“I’m trying to draw from myself as much as I possibly can, and trying not to just emulate James Doohan because that would end up becoming a really wretched impersonation. I’m trying to make it as realistic as possible, so that a modern-day Scottish person could see themselves in space one day.”
- Martin Quinn of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” in an interview with Space.com.
