BY DANA SIMPSON
As famously sung by great American singer/songwriter Bob Dylan: “The times they are a-changin’.” And while this sentiment continues to be both true and relevant to the world in which we live some 61 years after the song’s release, the same is also true for another (fictional) world: the DC Universe.
When American filmmaker James Gunn and British producer Peter Safran (both of “Superman,” 2025) took over as co-chiefs of DC Studios in 2023, they announced that the existing DC Extended Universe would be abandoned in favor of a more streamlined sequence of reboots and reimaginings. Thankfully for fans of the John Cena (“Bumblebee,” 2018) character Peacemaker, the patriot — like DC mainstays Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman — has made the cut. With this in mind, the muscly, no-nonsense hero is back this month in a big way, more than three years after his titular series premiered Jan. 13, 2022.
“Peacemaker” Season 2 premieres Thursday, Aug. 21, on HBO Max, with episodes releasing weekly until the series’ mid-October finale.
As originally described by HBO Max (formerly Max) via its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, “’Peacemaker’ follows the explosive escapades of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of James Gunn’s 2021 film ‘The Suicide Squad’ — a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.”
Now, after Peacemaker, aka Christopher Smith, has recovered from his injuries and waged his own brand of justice for eight episodes straight in Season 1, he “discovers an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be” in the second season.
But as HBO Max press reports, “this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands.”
As for Cena’s “Peacemaker” co-stars this season, Danielle Brooks (“Orange Is the New Black”) returns as Leota Adebayo, the “daughter of Suicide Squad founder and A.R.G.U.S. leader Amanda Waller” (Viola Davis, “How to Get Away With Murder”), along with fan favorites Freddie Stroma (“Pitch Perfect,” 2012) as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland (“Brightburn,” 2019) as Agent Emilia Harcourt and Steve Agee (“New Girl”) as Agent John Economos.
Variety also confirmed that Peacemaker’s racist father, August “Auggie” Smith, aka White Dragon, will return in the form of “The Faculty” (1998) and “Reacher” actor Robert Patrick, who originated the despicable role in the Season 1. Naturally, Peacemaker’s trusty avian sidekick Eagly, a digitally created eagle voiced by Dee Bradley Baker (“American Dad!”), also returns for Season 2.
Additions to the series cast include Tim Meadows (“Mean Girls,” 2004), Sol Rodriguez (“Devious Maids”) and Purge franchise star Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., who has more than likely come to settle the score with Peacemaker (spoilers for 2021’s “The Suicide Squad”), who killed his son, Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman, “For All Mankind”), in Gunn’s canon-establishing “Squad” film.
Don’t miss the premiere of “Peacemaker” Season 2 when it comes to HBO Max Thursday, Aug. 21. And for those who simply cannot get enough of the jingoist mercenary, “Peacemaker: The Official Podcast with James Gunn” launched July 24. Listen and subscribe on YouTube or your favorite podcast platform.

The Jets and the Sharks face off in ‘West Side Story’ classic corner
Richard Beymer and Natalie Wood in “West Side Story”
One of the all-time classic musicals, “West Side Story” has maintained the popularity of its original 1961 screen version though a Steven Spielberg-directed remake was released in 2021. MGM+ shows the original edition Saturday, Aug. 23, as it updates the “Romeo and Juliet” saga with Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as Maria and Tony ... the young lovers in then-contemporary New York who have respective ties to the Sharks and the Jets, rival street gangs.
Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins from a screenplay by Ernest Lehman, the film won 10 of the 11 Oscars it was nominated for — including those for supporting players Rita Moreno (who also was in Spielberg’s version) and George Chakiris. Russ Tamblyn also stars; the Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim music score includes the classics “Somewhere,” “Tonight,” “I Feel Pretty” and “America.” Wise and Lehman reteamed on another of the greatest movie musicals, “The Sound of Music” (1965).
“Disney Jr.’s Ariel” - Season 1 (Aug. 17)
An animated musical series inspired by “The Little Mermaid,” this series follows a young princess Ariel as she dives into exciting, fun-filled adventures with her friends across their vibrant, Caribbean-inspired fairytale kingdom of Atlantica.
more retro rewinds
“Johnny Carson” (Antenna TV, Mondays through Saturdays): Speaking of Mr. Carson, his 1962-92 tenure as the king of late-night TV talk continues to be seen in these repeats culled from his tenure as the witty and dapper host of NBC’s “Tonight Show.” The program is a valuable time capsule now, not only for its showcasing of popular celebrities of the era, but also for the topics Carson hit in his opening monologues. He always aimed to address what viewers were talking about then, and while many of the references seem dated today, they’re solid reminders of where America and the world stood at the time.
“Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” (FX, Tuesday, Aug. 19): Many devotees of the sci-fi franchise deem the first sequel to be the finest chapter of the series, as Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) continues their intergalactic battle against Darth Vader (David Prowse, with voice famously dubbed by James Earl Jones). Irvin Kershner took over the directing reins, but “Star Wars” mentor George Lucas remained heavily involved creatively ... and after some major character revelations (think “parentage”), the 1980 picture ends with a memorable cliffhanger that sets up the next sequel, 1983’s “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.”

Mariners look to close out series finale behind Woo
The second half of a thrilling 2025 MLB regular season continues as the surging Seattle Mariners look to wrap up their four-game series against the red-hot New York Mets Sunday, Aug. 17, at Citi Field in New York City. First pitch airs live on ESPN.
Entering the series with a record of 57-50 (at press time), Seattle sits firmly in second place, just a few games behind the playoff contending Houston Astros — in what has been an incredibly competitive American League West division. Offensively, the Mariners have had some incredible success this year, making their offence one of their most deadly assets.
Catcher Cal Raleigh continues to anchor the offence, putting up 41 home runs, 87 RBIs and an OPS of .981 (at press time), with consistent production from the likes of Julio Rodriguez (18 home runs) and J.P. Crawford (.265 batting average).
After showing flashes of promise last season, Oakland, California, native Bryan Woo has taken significant steps in only his second full season in the MLB. Woo holds an 8-5 won-lost record (at press time) with an impressive 2.92 ERA and 121 strikeouts while maintaining consistency throughout, completing at least six innings in all of his starts, something the Mariners will be leaning on against a strong Mets offence.
The Mets currently sit atop the National League East (62-46), with their offence ranking among the league’s best this season. Boasting a deep lineup led by sluggers Pete Alonso (22 home runs, 81 RBIs) and Juan Soto (25 home runs, 62 RBIs), the Mets will look to establish their game early on, in what has been a historic breakout 2025 campaign for them.
For Seattle, success in this series finale may very well come down to Woo’s continued command on the mound against an elite Mets squad. Seattle’s ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities is something it will surely lean on, as a strong finish to end the road trip would firmly keep the Mariners in the playoff race as August unfolds.
