Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán in “Wednesday”

On Wednesdays, we watch Netflix: Ortega, regulars joined by Lady Gaga for Season 2

For any viewers who fancy themselves as crazy, kooky, mysterious or spooky, Netflix has good news: Wednesday, the Addams family’s prodigal daughter, returns to the streamer with more action and deadpan humor than ever before. Premiering the first of its two parts Wednesday, Aug. 6, on the streamer, “Wesdesday” Season 2 snaps right back to it with a second part less than a month later, on Sept. 3.

Returning to her most iconic television role, Jenna Ortega (“Scream,” 2022) stars as moody teen psychic Wednesday Addams, who is ready to return to Nevermore Academy after her Season 1 encounters with a monstrous Hyde (Daniel Himschoot, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” 2015), a sinister secret society and, worst of all, several excessively chipper teenagers. And while Wednesday’s fellow students are even more aggressively interested in her following her heroism in saving their schoolmates from certain death, not everyone is happy to see the braid-clad school saviour back in the hallowed halls of Nevermore.

But it’s not all about Wednesday this season. As happens to many older sisters at some point in their lives, Wednesday’s younger sibling, her electrokinetically charged brother, Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez, “A Wrinkle in Time,” 2018), joins her at Nevermore, thus dragging the entire Addams family further into her social circle.

Tudum reports that in addition to Pugsley now studying and learning to control his own powers on campus, the siblings’ parents, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones, “Chicago,” 2002) and Gomez Addams (Luis Guzmán, “Traffic,” 2000), “have reasons to be on campus much more often” than they did in the first season.

Also joining Morticia and Gomez for the occasional school drop-in are Morticia’s mother, Hester Frump (a.k.a. Grandmama), played for the first time by glam icon Joanna Lumley (“Absolutely Fabulous”), and the kids’ enchantingly bizarre Uncle Fester, played once again by “Saturday Night Live” and “Portlandia” comedian Fred Armisen.

Other returning actors include Hunter Doohan (“Your Honor”) as Tyler Galpin; Emma Myers (“A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder”) as Enid Sinclair; Joy Sunday (“Rise,” 2023) as Bianca Barclay; Georgie Farmer (“Evermoor”) as Ajax Petropolus; Moosa Mostafa (“The Last Bus”) as Eugene Ottinger; Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo (“Devs”) as Sheriff Deputy Ritchie Santiago; and reportedly, Christina Ricci (“Yellowjackets”) as green-thumbed teacher Marilyn Thornhill. Victor Dorobantu also returns as disembodied hand, Thing.

What some fans are most excited for, however, is the addition of a beloved figure from the music and horror communities alike.

Lady Gaga (“A Star Is Born,” 2018) joins “Wednesday” as Rosaline Rotwood, a teacher at Nevermore Academy. Although very little is known about her character, Entertainment Weekly reported that the superstar’s role would be limited to a guest role in the second half of the season.

Season 2 of “Wednesday” also features Steve Buscemi (“Boardwalk Empire”), Billie Piper (“Kaos”), Evie Templeton (“Pinocchio,” 2022), Owen Painter (“Tiny Beautiful Things”), Noah B. Taylor (“Law & Order: Organized Crime”), Thandiwe Newton (“Westworld”) and Christopher Lloyd (“The Addams Family,” 1991), among others.

Don’t miss your chance to get “altogether ooky” with Ortega, Gaga and others when “Wednesday” Season 2 premieres Wednesday, Aug. 6. Part 2 will follow as of Sept. 3.

From high-stakes games to rivalry week showdowns and the personal journeys behind the game, this series captures the intensity and emotion of every moment.

Roberts and Grant find love in ‘Notting Hill’ classic corner

Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant star in “Notting Hill”

Screenwriter Richard Curtis already had giant success with a romcom formula — and with star Hugh Grant — in 1994’s “Four Weddings and a Funeral” when he reapplied both to “Notting Hill,” the 1999 hit that Cinemax shows Sunday, Aug. 3, and Thursday, Aug. 7. An extra turbocharge of star power is added by Julia Roberts as, of all things, an internationally famous actress who meets Grant’s unassuming character when she stops in the London bookshop he runs. They soon struggle with how to deal with their blossoming romance in light of her constant recognizability.

As “Four Weddings” did, “Notting Hill” also benefits from a group of actors cast as Grant’s close circle of friends — with later “Downtown Abbey” co-star Hugh Bonneville particularly notable as a fellow who fails to recognize Roberts when he first meets her, to everyone else’s great amusement. Directed by Roger Michell, the picture takes some sly shots at the media, as when Grant poses as a journalist (for the publication Horse & Hound) to get near Roberts while she’s doing a press junket.

“The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder” - Season 3 (Aug. 6)

From creator and executive producer Bruce W. Smith and executive producer Ralph Farquhar, Season 3 finds Penny Proud and her loyal crew embarking on international escapades, wild adventures, and fantastical stops packed with hilarity, heart, and, most of all, discovery.

more retro rewinds

“The Royal Family” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, Aug. 3): After the success he had with “Sanford and Son” (which it shares a “Binge” day with here), Redd Foxx returned to sitcom work — albeit briefly, as it turned out — with this 1991-92 show created by executive producer Eddie Murphy. Foxx plays Al Royal, a mail-delivery veteran looking forward to retirement with his wife (Della Reese) when their daughter (Mariann Aalda) and her children (Sylver Gregory, Larenz Tate, Naya Rivera) move in for a prolonged period of time. The show was reworked after Foxx’s sudden death early in its run, adding Jackee Harry to the cast, but it didn’t last much longer.

“Daredevil” (FX, Monday, Aug. 4): Movies revolving around Marvel Comics characters were still in their relative infancy when Ben Affleck took the title role in this entertaining 2003 adventure, casting him as blind attorney Matt Murdock, who uses the enhanced senses he still possessed to patrol New York and battle crime at night as the costumed Daredevil. He falls in love with Elektra (Jennifer Garner, who got her own spinoff movie), the daughter of the chief ally (Erick Avari) of the villainous Kingpin (Michael Clarke Duncan). Colin Farrell, Jon Favreau and Joe Pantoliano also star, and a pre-“Grey’s Anatomy” Ellen Pompeo appears briefly.

Byron looks to keep strong hold on top spot in Cup Series standings

The 2025 NASCAR Cup series continues as drivers head to Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa, for the Iowa Corn 350 powered by Ethanol. All the action begins Sunday, Aug. 3, with the race airing live on USA Network.

Entering Sunday’s Iowa Corn 350, William Byron quietly continues to sit atop NASCAR Cup Series standings in a season that’s seen many highs with very few lows.

So far this season, Byron has compiled 11 top10 finishes (at press time), including a huge win at this year’s Daytona 500 that made him only the fifth driver in NASCAR Cup Series history to win the prestigious race in back-to-back seasons. Managing to remain one of the more consistent and efficient drivers in the field throughout the year, Byron has led an impressive 769 laps this season — second only to Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson — posting an average finish of 13.9 (at press time).

As the Cup series returns to Iowa for just the second time in history, Bryon enters with major momentum on his side, and, with the playoffs inching closer and closer, every point matters. Another strong result in Iowa would not only continue to solidify his spot in the standings but also continue the tradition of championship DNA that Hendrick Motorsports has always been known for.

Fans won’t want to miss any of the action as the green flag for the Iowa Corn 350 powered by Ethanol drops Sunday, Aug 3, at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa, with all the action broadcast live on USA Network.

“I care about George and Bertha’s marriage — I like it. Both Carrie [Coon] and I have wonderful marriages that we love, and we both brought some of the care that we have for our own marriages into this marriage. And so, it’s a little bit like, man, I don’t want to see this thing dragged through the streets.”

- Morgan Spector of “The Gilded Age” in an interview with GQ.

“I’ve always been a fan of the Addams family — the movies, the TV show, and I was a big fan of ‘Wednesday,’ so I was very excited to know that they were interested in me to play the new principal of Nevermore. Barry Dort is a bit of a mysterious figure. Something about him is not right, but he loves the school and he has real outcast pride.” - Steve Buscemi of “Wednesday” speaking with Tudum.

“The word ‘culture’ is defined as ‘the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.’ We are so thrilled to eliminate that whole ‘intellectual’ part entirely ... Because while what the world needs now might be love sweet love, it also needs to see an Oscar winning actress and a Real Housewife come together to present a very heavy award to Oprah, if we can book her.” - Hosts of the Las Culturistas Culture Awards Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang in a statement.
