Few designers arrive at fashion with a narrative as layered and intentional as Didi Akinyelure. An award-winning former BBC journalist, Didi brings the rigor of storytelling, observation, and cultural nuance into every facet of APRIL & ALEX, the London-based brand she founded to celebrate confident, multidimensional women. Rooted in a family legacy of fashion and sharpened by years in journalism, her transition from reporting stories to designing them feels less like a pivot and more like a natural evolution—one where creativity, purpose, and craftsmanship intersect.

Known for its bold silhouettes, ethical production, and now its striking braided-heel footwear debut, APRIL & ALEX exists at the crossroads of wearable art and intelligent design. From Italian artisanship in Tuscany to reclaimed fabrics and circular standards, the brand challenges traditional ideas of luxury by placing comfort, sustainability, and emotional expression at its core. D

idi, you began your career as an award-winning journalist with the BBC. What inspired your transition from journalism to founding April & Alex, and how have your storytelling skills influenced your approach to fashion design?

My time at the BBC trained me to observe closely, ask deeper questions, and tell stories with purpose. Journalism taught me how narratives shape perception and fashion is no different.

That said, I’ve always been a fashion girl. My mother and grandmother were both in the fashion business, and I learned so much simply by watching them. In many ways, it felt inevitable that I would end up here. I love fashion and I love journalism, and I see myself as a true creative. I’m incredibly grateful to have found a path that allows me to live out both passions.

The braided heel pays homage to Italian craftsmanship and tradition. What was the most fascinating part of collaborating with artisans in Tuscany?

The experience was both eye-opening and exciting. Footwear design is incredibly complex and very different from apparel, where you can make a dress in a day. A single shoe can have between 20 and 50 components, often made by different artisans in different factories, making it a highly fragmented industry. I was fortunate to find the right partners to bring everything together. From the first sketch to final production, it took over two years, working across multiple suppliers. The level of skill, attention to detail, and respect for process was truly outstanding.

Comfort is notoriously elusive in fashion-forward heels. How did your team achieve a balance between visual impact and allday comfort?

Comfort was non-negotiable. This came from my own personal need for comfortable shoes. I’ve always struggled in high heels and wanted to find a genuine solution. We engineered the heel with careful weight distribution, cushioned insoles, and an ergonomic pitch. A woman should never have to choose between beauty and comfort. When you feel physically supported, confidence follows naturally.

You’ve said that your philosophy is to empower women to move confidently through their social and professional lives. What role do you believe footwear plays in a woman’s sense of empowerment?

Footwear grounds you, literally and emotionally.

When a woman feels stable, comfortable, and truly seen in her shoes, she moves differently.

Empowerment is about freedom of movement, presence, and self-expression, and footwear plays a powerful role in that experience.

Sustainability is a major pillar of April & Alex.

What were some of the challenges of introducing

Your new footwear line features a striking thick, colourful braided heel. Can you walk us through the design genesis of this architectural silhouette?

Our signature braided heel was inspired

by April, my 12-year-old daughter, and her experiments with crocheting and weaving. From sole shaping to heel weaving and final assembly, the process reflects a deep understanding of both craftsmanship and ergonomics. Unlike traditional heels that often prioritise aesthetics over comfort, the architectural construction of our braided heel distributes weight more evenly, enhancing balance and stability. I wanted to create something sculptural, in line with the aesthetic of our clothing; it’s wearable art. The braid represents strength through

sustainable principles into footwear, a category often criticised for its environmental impact?

Footwear is inherently complex, involving multiple artisans, materials, adhesives, and processes. We approached it by questioning every assumption and sourcing responsibly without compromising quality. Our goal isn’t to claim perfection, but to strive for progress, making conscious choices to reclaim, reuse, recycle, and conserve resources wherever possible.

Your apparel collections utilize premium reclaimed fabrics sourced in Italy. How did your circular fabric standard come to life, and why was ISO validation important to you?

Our circular fabric standard came from a desire to give exceptional materials a second life.

Italy has an extraordinary textile heritage, and reclaiming those fabrics felt both respectful and responsible. ISO validation was important because it brings transparency, accountability, and credibility to our sustainability commitments.

Ethical production is increasingly important in fashion. What does working with lowwaste, family-owned factories in London and Tuscany mean to you on a personal and brand level?

Working with family-owned factories is deeply personal. There’s a real sense of pride, care, and accountability in those spaces. It aligns perfectly with our values, low waste, fair practices, and human-centred production. It’s not just about where we make things, but how.

The relationships we’ve built with our artisans mean everything to us; they truly feel like family.

April & Alex has dressed global stars like Kelly Clarkson and Lucy Hale. How has celebrity visibility shaped the evolution of the brand?

Celebrity moments have certainly amplified our visibility, and it’s always exciting to see powerful, influential women wearing April & Alex. We’re incredibly grateful to the stylists who make

those moments happen. Ultimately, we love all the women who wear the brand and hope to continue creating collections that resonate with them.

You’ve showcased at London Fashion Week and Dubai Fashion Week as a British Fashion Council member. How does each city influence your creative direction?

London fuels experimentation; it’s where ideas are challenged and pushed forward. Dubai celebrates boldness and glamour and offers a truly global perspective. Showing in both cities reflects who we are: a British brand with an international voice.

As you release your first footwear collection, what message do you hope consumers take away from this new chapter of the brand?

This collection is about comfort, versatility, and innovation. We love creating unique products, and our shoes truly stand out; that was always the goal. It’s an invitation for women to step, quite literally, into the next chapter of April & Alex, knowing that craftsmanship, comfort, and confidence remain at the core.

The braided heel is visually daring and distinctly yours. Do you envision this becoming April & Alex’s signature motif in future seasons?

Absolutely, and we’re incredibly thankful for the response so far. Winning a Global Footwear Award in the High Heel category has been such an honour. I see the braid evolving and being reinterpreted across different forms and seasons.

It has the potential to become a signature that instantly communicates our brand DNA. With features in Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, and more, the brand has gained remarkable global traction. What do you think has resonated most with the press and consumers worldwide?

We stand out. From the beginning, we set out to be different and innovative. Stylists and editors are drawn to the brand because it’s editorially strong. That combination of distinctive design,

Your footwear is already stocked at Nordstrom, Wolf & Badger, and The Folklore. What do you look for in retail partners when expanding into new markets?

We look for partners who truly understand storytelling and are invested in long-term brand building. Alignment on values, audience, and vision is essential when entering new markets.

You often describe your designs as comfortable, versatile, eye-catching, and innovative. Which of these qualities challenges you the most during the design process?

Versatility. Designing pieces that transition seamlessly, from day to night, work to social, while remaining distinctive is always the most complex challenge, but also the most rewarding.

Can you share an example of a sustainable innovation or material you’re currently excited about exploring for future collections?

I’m excited by advancements in bio-based materials and next-generation plant leathers, as well as new recycling technologies that allow for higher quality reclaimed components without compromise.

April & Alex rejects the culture of fast fashion, prioritizing longevity instead. How do you

design for timelessness in a rapidly shifting fashion landscape?

When something is made beautifully and thoughtfully, it naturally endures. Timelessness comes from restraint and intention. I focus on silhouette, proportion, and craftsmanship rather than trends.

As both a creative director and entrepreneur, how do you balance business strategy with artistic vision?

I don’t see creativity and strategy as opposing forces, they’re deeply interconnected. Strategy provides clarity and intention, ensuring creativity has direction and longevity, while creativity brings emotion, meaning, and distinctiveness to strategic decisions. When the two move together, the brand can grow in a way that feels both commercially sound and creatively authentic.

Looking ahead, what does the next evolution of April & Alex look like—whether in apparel, footwear, sustainability, or global expansion?

The next evolution is about deepening, not rushing the process. Expanding footwear, refining apparel, advancing sustainability, and growing globally in a considered way. April & Alex will continue to champion women who move confidently through the world, on their own terms.

ucciana, how would you describe your personal style in three words?

Sultry, feminine and confident.

Which designers or brands have shaped your aesthetic the most?

The era of Gianni Versace, when he was alive, his accessories, the gold, the colors, the quality.

But I would say more people rather than brands shaped me since back in the day girls dressed more simple with luxury bags and shoes and big earrings, that’s what I love.

How do you decide what to wear for a public appearance versus your everyday life?

I always like to look good no matter where I go. A public appearance is something I plan an outfit for and doll myself but on a day to day, all my clothes I own truly represent clean sultry feminine and confident even if they are gym clothes or just simple tight jeans and white v-neck.

Can you share a fashion trend you love right now and one you can’t stand?

One that I love is SKIMS because it’s everything I love, and one that I personally hate is eyebrow lamination.

How did your journey in fashion begin, and what was the defining moment?

My mum was Miss World/ Miss Venezuela and my father was an international model and that’s how they met, so it was like I guess inspiration and what made me interested in modeling in the first place.

Which photoshoot or runway moment are you most proud of?

I love that I have been able to work with SKIMS as I said it’s a brand that resonates with me and a runway would be the Miami Swim Week runways I did in 2023.

How do you prepare mentally and physically for a major fashion campaign or show?

Honestly, I have no real tactic but I always push thru the crazy weird nerves you get to be able to get the confidence.

Have you faced challenges in your career where you had to redefine your path?

There has definitely been things that have happened where I have had to stay strong push thru even when it felt as if the hole world was against me but I was taught when bad things happen there’s always something better around the corner.

Which part of the fashion world excites you the most — editorial risk, commercial glam, street‑style edge, or something else?

I love on location campaigns. I love being able to model in an environment where you feel like a flow state of new ways to be able to model something.

Do you ever feel pressure to use your social‑media influence to “sell” a lifestyle rather than just express yourself? How do you handle that?

No, I have always ran my Instagram true to me and who I am, including the fact I don’t ever and hardly ever promote anything or collaborate with anything unless I truly like it, for example SKIMS, most recently.

Do you have a “fashion alter ego” — a version of yourself that shows up only on set or on camera, different from everyday Lucciana?

I always remain the same person and be myself whether it’s a normal day or a work day. However, with respect of professionalism on a work day. I do always what I was paid to, be there on time and do what needs to be done.

As someone with high visibility and access: do you feel a responsibility to use fashion (or your platform) to comment on bigger issues — social, cultural or environmental?

No, honestly I believe that is not my calling at all.

What advice would you give aspiring models or creatives trying to break into the industry today?

Passion is what makes fashion fashion, and hard work and authenticity always work.

lizabeth, your new book reframes anxiety as an energetic signal rather than a flaw. What inspired that perspective, and when did that shift first occur for you personally?

I used to see my anxiety as something broken inside me. But the moment I realized it was actually an alert system, not a malfunction, everything changed. That shift started when I began noticing patterns in my own life as well as in my clients lives. Anxiety always showed up right before a major energetic misalignment, almost like my “spidey-sense” warning me something was off. Once I stopped fighting it and started listening, anxiety became a teacher instead of a tormentor.

Coping manages symptoms; transformation rewrites the pattern. In the book I teach my ReNU method: Recognize, Neutralize, Utilize, which trains the nervous system to stop perceiving anxiety as danger and start translating it as guidance. Transformation happens when you no longer fear the signal but you use it instead. Therefore true transformation is when you can show up free of your own mental limitations and open to infinite possibilities.

You’ve said the soul uses anxiety as communication. What might it be trying to say?

Usually anxiety wants us to know: “You’re out of alignment with your truth.”

Sometimes it’s as simple as “slow down.” Other times it’s “you’re meant for more.” The soul doesn’t shout, it vibrates. Anxiety is the body’s way of amplifying that vibration until we listen. Of course if we don’t take the time to slow down and pay attention, the alarm bells will ring louder and anxiety will increase.

Many of your followers come from traditional backgrounds but are opening to spiritual ideas for the first time. How do you bridge spirituality and science?

By speaking both languages.

Quantum physics explains what mystics have always known: that everything is energy and frequency. Neuroscience calls it neuroplasticity, spirituality calls it awakening.

When we bring the two together, healing becomes both grounded and expansive. Anxiety as odd as it sounds, continues to establish the bridge between our physical body and our energy body. It is the communication between both and therefore is a blessing, not a curse.

You’ve described your journey from Catholicism to clairvoyance. Was there a moment when you stopped fearing your gifts?

At eighteen, I decided fear was a prison. The moment I embraced my extrasensory abilities

Medication and therapy can be can be powerful tools, but they’re not the whole picture. Anxiety isn’t the powerful enemy, it’s communication. The invitation is to get they’re not curious and ask questions like, “What is my anxiety trying to tell the whole me right now?” The moment you shift from resistance to curiosity, picture..” healing begins.

You often describe anxiety as a “misalignment of energy.” What does that look like in everyday life?

Misalignment feels like friction. You might be in a job, relationship, or environment that doesn’t match your vibration anymore, and your soul knows it before your mind admits it. The heart races, sleep disappears, irritability spikes.

That’s energy saying, “You’re off course, make a different choice.” When you honor that signal and recalibrate, the anxiety naturally eases.

In the book, you emphasize moving beyond coping into transformation. What does true transformation look like in mental-health

instead of suppressing them, my anxiety skyrocketed, and then transformed. Facing the fear of my own power was the doorway to peace. Now I help people navigate their own connections and a lot of the time, it starts with anxiety.

You experienced what you call a conscious abduction at 18, a defi ning moment in your awakening. How did that reshape your understanding of reality?

It shattered my belief that reality is purely physical.

I realized consciousness is multidimensional. That experience showed me how interconnected all beings are, and how we truly don’t know anything as humans. It opened my mind like nothing else ever could. Now I help others open their minds to the infi nite possibilities.

You work with celebrities and everyday seekers alike. What common thread do you notice among people searching for deeper meaning?

Everyone wants permission to feel safe in their sensitivity. Whether it’s Demi Lovato or a college student, the ache is the same: “Is it okay to be this aware, this emotional, this tuned in?” My answer is always yes, and that sensitivity is your superpower. When we stop and tune into those subtle messages we begin to feel as though we are a part of the whole rather than separate fragments. Awakening to this truth is always so awe-inspiring.

You’ve built a community of 800,000+. Beyond the content, what do you think people are truly seeking?

Belonging. So many of us feel different because we experience this life beyond the boundaries of what we were told is possible. My community isn’t about answers, it’s about connection.

Connection to themselves, each other, the planet and the energies in between. Once we can all feel that sense of connection the despair and anxiety ease tremendously.

Your first book, You’re Not Dying You’re Just Waking Up, focused on awakening. How does this second book evolve that conversation?

The first book was the cosmic alarm clock: this one is the practical manual. It’s for the people who woke up and said, “Okay, now what?” Your Anxiety Is Giving Me Anxiety translates spiritual awakening into everyday self-mastery. It’s about more than just solving anxiety, it’s about learning how to connect to the depths of your energetic interactions. At a neurological level, it’s about reprogramming your brain, no matter what the pain point is.

Do you believe anxiety is the new epidemic—or the new awakening?

Both. It’s the epidemic that’s forcing the awakening. Anxiety is humanity’s collective spidey-sense telling us our current way of living is unsustainable. If we listen, it becomes evolution, but if we don’t it’s all out anarchy.

Many readers struggle to reconcile spiritual healing with professional care. How do you see these modalities coexisting?

They must coexist. Western medicine treats the body: spirituality treats the energy that fuels it.

Healing becomes complete when science and soul collaborate instead of compete. We should never feel guilty for not being fully satisfi ed with either end, when we give ourselves permission to choose both, all opportunities are opened up for us.

The wellness industry can feel performative.

How do you stay authentic?

By living what I teach. I still have anxious days, I still mess up, but authenticity isn’t perfection, it’s transparency. I share the journey, not just the highlight reel.

Your father introduced you to past-life regression at 16. How did that shape your sense of identity and purpose?

You speak about living in “neutrality.” How does that differ from detachment?

Detachment is avoidance, neutrality is presence

without judgment. It’s standing in the storm without becoming the storm.

When you realize consciousness is vast and eternal, your problems shrink with perspective.

Exploring multidimensionality isn’t escapism, it’s expansion. It reminds you that you are more than your anxiety.

any, can you tell us about your journey into modeling and what inspired you to pursue it?

I began modeling at 14, working freelance while still very young. At 20, due to inexperience and a lack of guidance, I stepped away from the industry. Years later, after moving to the United States, I returned with clarity, confidence, and a deeper understanding of myself and the business.

This time, modeling felt purposeful. I rediscovered the joy of the work and the ability to deliver with intention. Experience, enthusiasm, and results are what keep me committed today.

Growing up in Brazil, were there cultural or fashion influences that shaped your style?

Are there Brazilian designers or brands you love to wear and support?

I also love the Camila Coelho Collection, both for its aesthetic and for the creative journey behind it. Camila’s story has inspired me for years.

How do you approach selecting outfits for high-profile shoots or red carpet events?

It starts with understanding the concept. Once I have clarity on the vision, I create a mood board that aligns the event’s inspiration with my personal brand, ensuring the look feels cohesive and authentic.

What has been the most challenging part of working in the fashion industry?

Rejection. Even with experience, hearing “no” can test your confidence. Over time, you learn that it’s rarely personal. It’s simply about fit, timing, and vision.

How do you stay confident during casting calls, photoshoots, or runway shows?

Confidence comes from preparation and clarity.

I trust my process and show up fully present, understanding that my role is to fit the vision, not force it.

Have you noticed any major shifts in the modeling world in the past few years?

The industry has evolved in meaningful ways.

There’s more diversity, more dialogue, and a stronger emphasis on respect and safety. Social media has also given models a voice, which has shifted power dynamics significantly.

How do you prepare physically and mentally for a major fashion campaign?

Physically, consistency is key. I prioritize rest and balance rather than drastic changes. Mentally, excitement fuels me. I see each project as an opportunity to collaborate, create, and grow.

Do you have a favorite photographer, designer, or creative collaborator you enjoy working with?

Yes. I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with creatives like Josh Ryan, Joey Wright, Alain Moises, and Jean Philippe, who have each played a role in shaping my path.

Outside of modeling, what are your passions or hobbies?

I love horseback riding, working out, and reading. Books keep me grounded.. I always have one with me.

How do you balance your personal life with the demands of an international modeling career?

Routine keeps me grounded. No matter where I am, I make space for what centers me. As my

career grows, learning to delegate will be part of maintaining that balance.

What motivates you to keep evolving as a model and fashion influencer?

My family and the child I once was, who believed this future might be possible. Remembering her gives me strength and perspective.

I’m in a season of refinement: rebranding, strengthening my digital presence, and aligning with agencies and brands that reflect my values.

HOW DOES OVERSIZED STILL MAKE YOU LOOK GOOD? Article by JUANDA B. RUSTAM

So far, oversized has been a long-standing trend, with the fashion world and everyone still relying on this style. For example, oversized pants and black tops are still a popular style, or another increasingly popular option is oversized pants and crop tops. Sometimes women don't want to constantly expose their figure and elegance; casual moments with freedom of movement are refreshing in fashion. Loose clothing is extra comfortable and has a down-to-earth personality, yet still reflects a friendly luxury.

SHOULD THERE BE A SPECIFIC SIZE COMPARISON BETWEEN CLOTHES AND PANTS?

There are two options when it comes to proportional sizes, whether for tops or bottoms. The first is the oversized size designed by the fashion brand in question, so you can buy it directly. You can easily choose Small, Medium, or Large, then go to the fitting room to make sure the size fits you.

The second method is to create your own size. In this case, you'll likely need to find a top and bottom in a very large size. To compare, you'll need to use a mirror and check the proper proportions between the top and bottom. After that, you'll need to figure out how to wear the top and bottom comfortably, meaning without them being too baggy. For tops, you can roll them up to avoid long sleeves, but for pants, you can narrow the waistline by using a belt. Clearly, there's some manipulation involved in how both tops and bottoms are worn.

SHOULD CLOTHES AND PANTS BE FROM THE SAME FASHION BRAND?

Similar but not the same—that's the philosophy. This means that behind the explicit similarities, there are implicit differences, usually in color and texture.

Typically, one fashion brand has lighter or darker colors.

So there are differences in appearance, even if slight.

The reason is that each brand has its own color palette.

Textures also differ, influenced by the material. One has 85 percent cotton and 25 percent polyester, and the other has 90 percent cotton and 10 percent polyester. While this doesn't affect appearance, it does affect comfort, as the material determines texture, and the texture of the clothing is in direct contact with the skin.

DOES THE CUT OF A TOP OR BOTTOM AFFECT THE OVERSIZED STYLE?

Typically, fashion brands have specific cuts for tops and bottoms, which directly determine a silhouette. In reality, many people wear tops and bottoms from different brands, so the resulting silhouette doesn't match the silhouette specified by a particular brand. Ultimately, oversized with a specific silhouette is impossible, for example, an oversized with an A-line silhouette.

ARE THERE OTHER HIDDEN ASPECTS THAT AFFECT THE OVERSIZED STYLE?

Literally, clothing covers the body, while everyone's body shape is different, whether they are the same height or equally short. When the clothing is worn, the body will adapt to the desired oversized look. What often happens is that the pants are slightly longer or hang down a little more. This can be done by rolling them up or creating a creative look, such as having a band at the hem. Oversized outfits may look the same on everyone whether tees but they can change after wearing them. That's how a sense of style plays a role!

Your background in science and engineering is unique in fashion. How does that analytical precision manifest in the construction of MABROOK? Science taught me to study structure, tension, and form.

Engineering taught me to refine processes until they become seamless.

In MABROOK, this translates into technical mastery—precision patternmaking, load-balanced corsetry, and draping techniques that allow movement without sacrificing structure. The result is gowns that feel effortless, yet are meticulously engineered to support the bride in every way.

Many of your gowns feature bold cuts paired with intricate embroidery.

What specific handwork techniques or craftsmanship details make this collection distinct?

We worked with artisans who specialize in micro-beading, threadwork inspired by ancient relief carvings, and hand-sculpted appliqués. One distinguishing detail is our “etched embroidery”—a technique that mimics the chiseled textures of Mesopotamian stone.

Another is our use of layered tulle manipulation to create shadowed motifs that appear to move with the bride. Every detail is hand-finished; nothing feels mass-produced.

The result is gowns that feel effortless, yet are meticulously engineered to support the bride in every way.

Many of your gowns feature bold cuts paired with intricate embroidery. What specific handwork techniques or craftsmanship details make this collection distinct?

We worked with artisans who specialize in micro-beading, threadwork inspired by ancient relief carvings, and hand-sculpted appliqués. One distinguishing detail is our “etched embroidery”—a technique that mimics the chiseled textures of Mesopotamian stone.

How do you balance historical inspiration with the needs of a 21st-century bride?

I treat history as texture, not constraint. The inspiration is ancient, but the execution is modern—clean lines, smart construction, and silhouettes that respect contemporary lifestyles.

Today’s bride wants emotional resonance and practicality, so I design with intelligent fabrics, lightweight engineering, and versatility without losing the soul of the story. assumption and sourcing responsibly without compromising quality. Our goal isn’t to claim perfection, but to strive for progress, making conscious choices to reclaim, reuse, recycle, and conserve resources wherever possible.

Is there a particular gown within the collection that feels like the heart of MABROOK—one that encapsulates the entire story you wanted to tell?

Yes—the “Inanna Blessing” gown. It features a sculpted bodice with shield-like beading, a fluid skirt that opens like a river, and embroidery inspired by ancient prayer tablets. It embodies protection, femininity, and power—the very essence of MABROOK. When brides wear it, they often say they feel transformed, grounded, and elevated at once.

Your ready-to-wear designs have appeared on runways from New York to Paris. How did the shift from RTW to bridal influence your creative process for this collection?

RTW is about storytelling through movement and seasonality. Bridal is about storytelling through emotion and legacy. The shift forced me to slow down and design with deeper intimacy. Instead of imagining a runway, I imagined a single moment—the moment a bride sees herself and feels her future. That changed everything about my process.

The aŠady woman is confident, thoughtful, and powerful. How do you design for her on a day traditionally defined by softness and romance?

I give her permission to take up space. My gowns are not about disguising or diminishing; they are about celebrating the full dimension of a woman’s identity. Softness and romance are present, but so are clarity, structure, and presence. Her wedding day is not just a romantic moment—it is a statement of who she truly is.

You often emphasize that a woman can be strong and feminine without compromise. How do your bridal designs challenge or redefine traditional bridal expectations?
