EDITORS NOTE

Happy New Year everyone, As we start the New Year off, I am hoping that gun violence will end. I know that’s a tall order, but that is my prayer. The 100 has had two significant events that positively influenced my life. The local chapter Annual Gala, where we gave away seven scholarships, and The National Organization had a very successful Leadership Summit in Atlanta, GA. This is the month when we all reflect on New Year’s resolutions and losing weight. I never waste my time on those resolutions; I concentrate on improving my life. This month is unique as we celebrate a great leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

must know that they can lead. With this as a goal, we strive daily to make a difference in the youths we mentor.

I learned from his speeches and read about the many accomplishments he made. While in school, I remember one quote: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” That’s a powerful statement.

The mission of 100 Black Men is to improve the quality of life by supporting and enhancing educational and economic opportunities, particularly for African-American youth in the community. However, we know that culture (such as the current gun culture) is all-encompassing, and if it is to remain and grow, its ideas, beliefs, and practices must be passed down.

Dr. King believed in being nonviolent; I wish some of these people today could hear those words and put those guns down. I am hoping that gun violence will end. I know that’s a tall order, but that is my prayer. The 100 realizes that the challenge of social justice is not limited to adult communities.

As our National Chairman says, ELEVATE FOR US MEANS:EMPOWERING OURSELVES – AND OUR CHAPTERS….

As Dr. King and Ambassador Young taught us, we must teach tolerance, nonviolence, and conflict resolution. We want them equipped to be the voices of reason. Empowering youth to lead is critical because their peers sometimes respond to adult voices. Every young person

he 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. has collaborated with The Friendly Inn Settlement, Inc. and presented a Financial Literacy Challenge to 30 children. The Save & Spend Challenge is an exciting game where you have a limited amount of money and lots of things to spend! to Students at Friendly Inn Settlement, Inc. words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. resonate as profoundly today as they did in 1967 when he declared, “The dignity of the individual will flourish when the decisions concerning his life are in his own hands; when he has the means to seek self-improvement.” Mentoring is the cornerstone of what the 100 Black Men do with the youth. The kids enjoyed learning about Financial Literacy, which is understanding and using various financial skills, including personal financial management, budgeting, and investing. Mentoring begins with the trust and ability to see everyone’s potential. Not every person starts at the same stage, but they all could positively impact society, which begins with the guidance of mentors. Across the United States and Internationally, 100 Black Men of America, Inc. is changing the lives of tomorrow’s leaders through the 100’s signature programs: Mentoring 100 Way, Collegiate 100®, and 100 Black Men Chapters. Each of our programs delivers unique mentoring initiatives that help tap into deserving youth annually and change their lives. cycle of generational debt. The goal of the 100 is to leave a legacy of wealth-building, which leads to debt-free living for the youth and communities we serve. Our economic empowerment programs and initiatives at an early age foster financial literacy, career development, financial planning, investment management, and fiscal responsibility. Exposing our youth and collegiate students to the skills, strategies, and mindset of entrepreneurship also provides beneficial, transferable knowledge that will help establish a firm foundation they can later build upon for business development and wealth creation. Today, it is crucial to teach everyone about Financial Literacy. Financial literacy is understanding and applying different financial skills effectively, including personal financial management, budgeting, and saving. Financial literacy makes individuals self-sufficient so that financial stability can be accomplished. According to the U.S. Financial Literacy and Education Commission, everyone should know the five major principles of financial literacy. These principles are: earn, save and invest, protect, spend, and borrow. Continued on next page Real Men Magazine/January 2024

After a short overview of the game by 100 Black Men by member David Taylor, three team captains were picked, and then the teams were selected. Each room had ten children excited to pick out the avatar they wanted. Next, the teams had to choose the career for the avatar they picked; now, this is where the fun starts. You get your monthly net pay for your total expenses. At the heart of financial literacy lies the principle of earning. It’s about developing skills, pursuing education, and securing employment that enables you to generate a steady income. Increasing your earning potential opens doors to financial stability and growth. Your income is the foundation upon which your financial stability rests.

a computer for 2,000, buy a house for 20,000, or save 10,000.00 for the future. Your spending habits play a significant role in your financial journey. Being mindful and purposeful about your spending can lead to greater financial freedom.

The exciting part at this point of the game is that now you have to choose a savings goal to buy a dream vacation for 5,000, a new car for 15,000,

Then the game wheel spins with money dropping in for the savings you gain during the game; many things happen, like paydays, the car

Budgeting is tricky for many adults, including kids 8 to 14. They had to determine what they spent money on daily, weekly, and monthly. A budget is a spending plan based on income and expenses. In other words, it’s an estimate of how much money you’ll make and spend over a certain period, such as a month or year. Or, if you’re accounting for the incoming and outgoing cash of everyone in your household, that’s a family budget.

breaks down, and even if you are lucky, a bonus of some amount of money will pop in. You can lose money when you have to go to the emergency room for $2,000.00. You would have enjoyed seeing the kids get excited to try to play to win. Saving money is the cornerstone of achieving financial goals. A well-structured savings plan involves setting aside a portion of your income regularly, creating an emergency fund, and working towards shortterm and long-term objectives. Competitive children want to win at whatever they’re doing, which can be a huge motivator. Having prizes for kids significantly increases their motivation levels when competition is involved in their task. The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. awarded winners first, second, and third place.

The kids were happy to receive the prizes, but the winning group had bragging rights, telling everybody they won.

Dr. King’s Speech Help Shape My Life By Robert L. Bankston

It Was All A Dream!

D

espite the popular misconceptions, this is not related to Notorious B.I.G. or commemorating 50 years of hip-hop. On April 4, 1968, precisely 55 summers ago, Dr. Martin Luther King was tragically assassinated on the balcony of the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. In that moment, time seemed to freeze momentarily, and the harsh reality of his loss became undeniable. Both individuals were victims of violence; some things have not changed, but the profound impact of Dr. King’s death cannot be understated. At the age of 16, while lying in a hospital bed fighting for my life, I had the opportunity to

listen to the iconic “I HAVE A DREAM” speech in 1985. My grandfather played Dr. King’s speech, believing it could guide him through life’s challenges, and he hoped it would do the same for me. After realizing the importance of life, I decided to make changes and enlisted in the United States Navy. Along the way, I earned my bachelor’s degree, and over the years, I found inspiration in Dr. King’s speeches, which motivated me to pursue my M.B.A. at 53. I am excited to announce that I will publish my first novel this year, motivated by Dr. King. Dr. King rose to prominence in an era of limited population despite facing low approval ratings. The impact Dr. King has on 100 Black Men

Inc. is profound and enduring. The effect of the work done by 100 Blackmen of Greater Cleveland Inc. can be highlighted through local contributions & partnerships and nationally 100 Blackmen Inc., with James W. contemplation transformed his aspiration into a tangible reality. A dream serves as a meager manifestation; even though Dr. King may not have reached the mountain top, he helped us reach it.

The notion of accomplishing this task should not be underestimated, as it is more challenging than initially seems. Nevertheless, individuals who possess unwavering determination, like Dr. King can make consistent progress daily. The experience of Dr. Martin Luther King is a constant reminder that the pursuit of progress to the mountain top can be arduous, both physically and mentally, in the present time. “I Have a Dream Speech” was delivered August 28, 1963; however, Dr. King has several nightmares during his journey. In his heart, he realized his limitation prevented him from being in everything to everyone, and his sacrifice to the ones who loved him most was great. In 2024, we must unite and ensure that our impact is as influential as Dr. King’s, even if it means focusing on just one task. Dr. King’s effect was much more significant than his speeches and movement. Employing his voice to ignite transformation, his true brilliance emerged in his meticulous skill with disciplined silence in calculating his next move. While dreams may not be exclusive, his silent

WHAT DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. ME The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. Martin Luther King Jr.

By Pastor Robert M. Dix, Jr When I think about the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., three words come to mind: JUSTICE, EQUALITY, AND PERSEVERANCE. I wasn’t born until 1971, so I don’t have any personal memories of Dr. King or the Civil Rights Movement. However, through study and the gifts of modern technology, I’ve gained a thorough understanding of what I believe to be his calling through his dream, resulting in the legacy that my generation and generations celebrate. Dr. King was an essential part of history; he dreamed that all people, no matter what color, gender, religion, etc., should judge others by their actions and not their looks. At the height of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. King was able to lead a justice movement through his leadership. Social and racial injustice was at an all-time high. African Americans were subjected to racially motivated violence, housing and employment discrimination, school segregation, and

voting rights infringement. The Civil Rights Movement stands as an extraordinary expression of civic responsibility. It underscored that whoever you are, wherever you are, you can always stand up for others; you can always work in small as well as extensive ways to make progress possible. Dr. King’s commitment and message are why his appeal for social justice remains so powerful today. As we prepare to celebrate Dr. King, nearly 56 years since his death, we emphasize the importance of peaceful resolution to the social issues plaguing our society. There’s still a fight for social justice and equality. We must,

therefore, persevere in our efforts to bring about change. Dr. King said, “We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.” In keeping with the legacy of Dr. King, the holiday honoring his birth is a day of service, where Americans from every walk of life contribute their time in the name of a better future for all.

DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING’S IMPACT ON MY LIFE By: Amyis Glover The legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. has had a profound impact on my life. Though I never met Dr. King, his courageous fight for civil rights and equality has inspired me to strive for justice in my way. When I face adversity, I recall Dr. King’s words: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” His example strengthens me to speak out against prejudice and work for positive change, even when the road seems long. His vision of a just society motivates me to treat everyone with dignity and respect.

“Dr. King called on all people to live together in peace, judging one another by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin” Though the journey continues, Dr. King leads toward love and righteousness. His life mission lives on through those who dare to dream and work to make his dream a reality.

MEET MENTEE CANON RICKEY DRAKE Canon Rickey Drake is a 16—year—old Junior attending Davis Aerospace and Maritime High School. My career goals are currently split between a few interests and career paths. They include becoming a Financial Controller or Engineer, a Plumber, Electrician, or Mechanic, and or pursuing a career in the US Navy. My hobbies include but are not limited to, building gadgets, constructing Legos, playing video games, watching sports (mainly football), cooking in the kitchen, and playing somewhat unorthodox sports such as tennis, spike ball, ping pong, fishing, sailing and bowling. I also enjoy dismantling large objects, vehicles, small boats, and various mechanical items at school and home and learning how to fly and operate drones in Drone Club. In addition, I enjoy spending time with my little sister, teaching her new things, and attending and serving at my church, where I am a part of the production team and the small group of the Teen Tribe.

100 Black Men High School Senior Mentees receive a paid scholarship to the colleges of their choice and to see so many black men and women there to support the cause of the 100 Black Men organization and the Mentee Program.

Being a new 100 Black Men mentee has been a great addition to my life. In my limited time so far, I’ve already had the chance to attend multiple programs and events to better the greater Cleveland community and build my personal development and fitness. Another experience that was a privilege to attend was the 100 Black Men Scholarship and Awards Gala. I was initially reluctant to participate (not knowing what to expect), but the experience was so eye-opening. Not only could I attend the Gala with my mother, but I was also given a tuxedo compliments of the 100 Black Men. At the Gala, I met and became familiar with higher - up black scholars and professionals who reside in the city of Cleveland and work so hard for the community, including Ms. Meryl Johnson and Dr. Terrance Menefee, both award winners at the program. Also, at the Gala, I was impressed to see a feature of the

Going to this Gala was also a fun experience for my mom and myself, that allowed me to dress in fancy attire, eat gourmet foods, take exciting pictures, and familiarize myself with different organizations in the Cleveland area, such as A.S.P.I.R.E. Academy and the “Make Them Know Your Name” Foundation, etc. The Gala was well put together, organized, enjoyable, and hosted at a very well-suited and beautiful location. Overall, the Gala was a compelling and fantastic experience that I am honored to have had the privilege to attend. Being a part of the 100 Black Men Mentee Program thus far has been such a great experience, and I couldn’t be more excited to see what they have in store for me in the future. Thank you. 31

The panelists urged participants to vote and become part of the political governance process to change unfair sentencing, support effective community policing practices, and advocate for criminal justice reform efforts – and vigorously support those who do at the local, State, and federal levels. Another great workshop was Finance and Chapter Development: Help Your Chapter Build and Strengthen Its Financial Reporting and Accounting Capabilities. It was demystifying the national reporting and compliance requirements. A conversation came through the topic of Unlocking the Power within Your Chapter, right before the National Chairman Milton H. Jones Jr. delivered his State of the 100 speech. “Brothers, along with you, I am deeply committed to helping our committees remain strong, well-led, and elevated,” said Milton H. Jones Jr. He also communicated this message: Let’s be very clear: We need more access to capital in our communities. We also need more businesses that can grow to scale, create more jobs, and help close the enormous wealth gap we experience today.

The three most significant drivers of these disparities are inherited wealth, level of consumer debt, and ownership of incomeproducing assets. We need to increase access to capital and business ownership in our communities. We are working to improve financial literacy, understanding of investment strategies, and hands-on banking. “The 100 Black Men of America Leadership Summit was great for me. The presented topics were right on time and applicable to local chapters. I also enjoyed the opportunity to fellowship and build relationships with brothers across the 100 I had never met. The Leadership Summit is necessary for chapters to participate in to ensure the present and future success of the organization.” said Board Member Edwin Hubbard Jr. Chairman Jones finished his speech by saying: Let me summarize why everything I have discussed is essential today but even more in the future. I want to discuss a term you often hear as you listen to futurists, educators, newscasters, executives, and other leaders. That term is future-proofing.

Real Men Magazine/January 2024

Future-proofing refers to designing and implementing systems, strategies, or solutions that can adapt and remain effective in the face of future changes and challenges. It involves anticipating and preparing for future developments, such as technology advancements, market shifts, regulatory changes, and evolving customer needs. When considering what this means to 100 black men in America, we must ensure that our solutions and programs remain relevant and sustainable. We are the world’s largest network of black male mentors, is how he ended.

and effort. I imagine you all have put in many person-hours to make the 2023 Leadership Summit a total and complete success,” said Lee Fields Jr. - Chairman of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. Leadership is critical in the 100; becoming involved with the Work of The 100 provides the vehicle that enables men to practice a firmly held belief that African American men must be at the forefront of nurturing our children to become scholars in the classroom and future leaders in their communities.

“The 100 Black Men of America’s recent Leadership Summit revolved around a theme of unity and was enforced through team building and training sessions to connect the chapter delegates across our 100 Black Men of America’s network. It was truly a pleasure to dwell together in unity with like-minded individuals. The 3-day agenda allowed us to cover topics ranging from Public Policy and education to Finance and Chapter Development. However, putting our young people at the heart of everything we do, with a strategy that combines the 100’s mission, vision, and purpose, was the highlight of our 3-day summit. Congratulations to Chairman Milton H. Jones, Jr. for your leadership. Thank you to the executive team and planning committee for your hard work

GRADY BURROWS 2023 Cleveland Chapter Member of the Year By James W. Wade III Managing Editor Since the early 2000s, Grady Burrows has been a member of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc., and a great asset to the organization. The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. held its annual Scholarship & Awards Gala on December 9, 2023, to a soldout crowd where he was announced as the Chairman’s Award Winner (Member of the Year) at this year’s Gala. Burrows is an engineer, an IT guy, and the executive director of HIT in the CLE. This organization works with high school and college students to provide greater access to computer and data science programs. Grady embraces the idea that with hard work comes great rewards but knows he couldn’t have gotten to where he is today without a great support network. Burrows has worked diligently with the organization for a long time. Burrows is the Education Chair, and he spearheaded the Wade Park School Tutoring every Wednesday morning during the school year. This past year was the first time in sixteen years that the Cleveland Chapter of the 100 Black Men prepared a group of our mentees to attend and compete in a youth competition at our national conference. Six months before the conference, Grady led an effort with others and convened a group of mentees to prepare them for the Dollars and Sense Competition. “I arranged weekly Zoom meetings with the chapter’s young men and other mentors to

review the competition book, “Closing The Racial Wealth Gap’. I completed the grant application for State Farm Insurance that was a part of the process, arranged parental information sessions, coordinated travel for the youth, attended multiple calls/submitted documents to nationals, and helped the young men prepare a presentation that was video tapped and submitted to nationals,” said Burrows. It was a labor-intensive process, but they all learned a lot as adults during the process, and most importantly, the young men got the opportunity to see world-class Black excellence at the national conference in Las Vegas. The young men earned the chance to participate in several youth development workshops, meet

other mentees from around the country, and were on the program in a 100% youth-run breakfast they executed themselves. Best of all, many said it was “an experience they would never forget.” This has been a stellar year for Burrows, who was fortunate to receive a HIMSS23 Change Maker Award at their International Conference in Chicago. The award recognized his STEM work leading #HITintheCLE and the Education of Black and Brown populations in computer and data science in middle, high school, and college students. Burrows was honored to be in the company of phenomenal award recipients and to have the opportunity to network with health IT professionals worldwide. NOBLE (National Organization of Black Law Enforcement ) Annual Training Conference was held in Cleveland, Ohio, and engaged over 1,500 law enforcement executives and conference attendees around the theme,

“Stronger Together: Reducing and Preventing Crime Through Strategic Partnerships and Collaborations.” This premier conference delivered world-class training workshops and panel discussions, creating an environment where chief executive officers, command-level officials, members, and partners could come together to learn, share, and collaborate. Grady was also honored by NOBLE at their national conference in Cleveland. Just recently, Burrows was accepted to The 100 Black Men of America, Inc. Leadership Institute. 100 Black Men of America, Inc. Leadership Institute’s objective is to prepare future leaders to assume positions of greater responsibility and increased influence at the local Chapter and national board level and outside of the 100BMOA organization. leaders who can take charge and overcome the many challenges we face today. The 100 Black Men of America, Inc. has initiated this process through the development of its Leadership Institute. Members will leave this workshop understanding the importance of nonprofit governance and leadership development, the reasoning behind implementing the 100’s Leadership Institute, the process to develop smaller Leadership Institute groups within their local chapters and communities, and the best fundraising practices to get their local groups started.

Grady Burrows is the Executive Director of HIT in the CLE, located in Cleveland, Ohio. The organization aims to educate, inspire, and open doors for black and brown high school and college students in computer and data science. Before leading the effort with HIT in the CLE, Burrows spent over twenty years in various corporate IT roles with companies such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, National City Bank (PNC), and Kearney (a Global Management Consulting Firm). Grady Burrows has had extensive experience in fulfilling civic roles and volunteerism within the northeast Ohio. He has served as Vice Chair of the Cleveland Metropolitan School Board for six years, currently serves as the Education Chair of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, and is the Secretary of the United Black Fund.

“I am honored and humbled to have been accepted into the 100 Black Men of America Leadership Institute. After meeting the Gamma cohort this past week and having taken part in our first in-person training session, I am confident that I will learn a great deal that will help the Greater Cleveland Chapter to be more successful in executing our Four For The Future as well as enhance me personally and professionally.,” said Grady.

“Support systems are critical because there are many people and support systems to help you,

but you can’t live on an island alone. You have to reach out and raise your hand and say, I need help, or I would like to network and find other people who look like me, who think like me, and who might be able to understand my perspective or where I’m coming from. Many of us have walked those same roads and bridges and crossed some obstacles you might travel. So, believe me when I say that by reaching out and talking to other people who are a little older and have gone through this before, you can gain some excellent insight and wisdom and help navigate some of the challenges you might face as you pursue a STEM career,” said Burrows. Burrows was introduced to the 100 by attending an informational meeting or a social event where he admired various members of the organization, like Julius Singleton, Russell Redmon, Franklin Martin, Mike Nelson, and Curtis Griggs, for their work in the community. “I volunteered for two years with the 100 BMOGC, preparing high school students to compete in the African American History Challenge Competition at the National Convention before I sought membership with the organization,” said Burrows.

“I am honored to be a part of this great organization and blessed to share it with my wife, Melissa Burrows” Being the Education chair, you would only assume that out of the Four Pillars, that Education would be his favorite. “I must say that the Education Pilar is my favorite because Education is the key to financial health and prosperity. Having served as the Vice Chair of the Cleveland Municipal School Board for six years, I know that the playing field is not level for many of Cleveland’s youth,” said Burrows.

Education is the most potent weapon you can use to change the world. We aim to work with parents, families, community partners, and schools to teach African American youth the tools needed to make the world a better place. Beginning with early Education, how the teacher nurtures your child’s talents will determine their path in life. Teachers are incubators that bring out the best in the child by stimulating their minds and inspiring them to do great things. Community and higher education partnerships open doors for our youth to have a better chance to enhance their talents and opportunities. For 57 years, the 100 has educated African American youth, believing that all youth, regardless of race and socioeconomic status, must have access to quality education. “Education is the most critical pillar because if we can open more doors for our youth and community by improving and strengthening Continued on next page

especially our young men, to have positive images that they can model and aspire towards,” said Burrows.

Across the United States and Internationally, 100 Black Men of America, Inc. is changing the lives of tomorrow’s leaders through the 100’s signature programs: Mentoring 100 Way, Collegiate 100®, and 100 Black Men Chapters.

The 100 delivers mentoring training at our annual conferences and regional workshops open to the public. Collegiate 100 and 100 Black Men chapters provide unique mentoring initiatives that impact deserving youth annually. Please support the work of the 100 and explore ways to keep it.

Each of our programs delivers unique mentoring initiatives that help tap into deserving youth annually and change their lives. Mentoring provides support and positively impacts the lives of tomorrow’s leaders today. Grady Burrows has been heavily involved in the mentoring aspect of the 100 organization. “I enjoy mentoring because I think that it is vital for our youth,

“Even after the election of President Obama, there are still not enough positive images for young people to project themselves onto. Suspending disbelief long enough for a young person to imagine themselves as the next businessman, entrepreneur, scientist, etc., is my most powerful motivation at this stage in my life. to save our communities or youth. As black men, we must rise to this occasion,” Burrows explained. Burrows is the Financial Secretary within his church, Mt. Zion UCC, and the Chair of the Bigger Better Business committee within the Cleveland graduate chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. Grady Burrows received his undergraduate degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from The Ohio State University and his MBA from Case Western Reserve University. He is married to Melissa K. Burrows, Ph.D. They have two sons. HEALTH & WELLNESS

100 Black Men/YMCA Health and Wellness Program By James W. Wade III Editor

This program consists of an 8-week course designed to educate our mentees/participants on the importance of being active/physically fit as well as how to perform various fitness routines and exercises to build their strength and endurance, which in turn can lead to multiple health benefits such as improvement in brain health, help manage weight, reduce the risk of disease, strengthen bones and muscles, as well as build their confidence and self-esteem.

I have many happy memories of my childhood attending Hiram House Camp and other great activities. When I was growing up, we had fun doing regular outdoor things for exercise, like playing football in the street or playing basketball in my yard; these things were free. To this day, I never understood how my mother provided so much for me on her income.

Classes are held every Tuesday at the Warrensville YMCA from 5:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. All mentees/participants of this program receive a free monthly membership to the YMCA during the duration of this program, compliments of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, therefore allowing mentees access to the YMCA to exercise outside of scheduled classes.

Realizing regular physical activity is one of the most important things people can do to improve their health. Moving more and sitting less have tremendous benefits for everyone, regardless of age, sex, race, ethnicity, or fitness level. Individuals with a chronic disease or a disability benefit from regular physical activity, as do women who are pregnant. The scientific evidence continues to build—that physical activity is linked with even more positive health outcomes than we previously thought. And, even better, benefits can start accumulating with small amounts of, and immediately after doing, physical activity.

The goal of this program is to provide the participants of the mentorship program through 100 Black Men with the tools to be successful in the gym. This program will increase strength, endurance, confidence, and motivation and can lead to weight loss.

Across our county, low-income youth are participating less in physical activities than youth from high-income families. This discrepancy is referred to as the physical divide. The result of low physical activity in youth directly correlates to various health risk factors such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, obesity, insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, etc.

The program’s Mentees would be required to have a membership in the YMCA. Our youth/ teen memberships are for individuals up to 18. The monthly cost of this membership is $20/ month + tax. For the year, that comes to $240 + tax. The 100 Black Men, the leading mentor group, is increasingly playing a more significant role in supporting youth in Cleveland by providing confidants and mentors a key to their success; these role models look like those looking up to them. One of the 100 sayings is: “What They See Is What They Will Be.”

The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland has partnered with the Warrensville YMCA to combat the “physical divide” by designing a health and wellness program to get inner city/ low-income youth more active. 74

Real Men Magazine/January 2024

Darian Johnson and Dr. Ernest Smoot have emphasized that (motto), and that’s why they have tried to present a good image for these young people and have them look at what success can be like as they mature and move on with their lives. Health & Wellness is one of our Four Pillars of the 100 Black Men, and we are providing it to our members and mentees. The YMCA program is mainly for our youth. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition, recommend that children and adolescents ages 6 to 17 do 60 minutes or more of moderate-tovigorous physical activity daily. The program teaches the mentee to choose types of physical activity appropriate for their current fitness level and health goals because some activities are safer than others. Increase physical activity gradually over time to meet critical guidelines or health goals. Inactive people should “start low and go slow” by starting with lower-intensity activities and progressively increasing the frequency and duration of activities. Many of the issues that plague our communities stem from the economic disadvantages and generational poverty that many African Americans experience. The 100 is implementing solutions to break the cycle of poverty. We encourage youth to stay in school and deliver support services for students to graduate on time. Additionally, we provide the guidance, skills, and tools necessary for students to find a career that will ensure their financial stability and make them contributing members of society. Beyond that, we need more job creators. To significantly help our communities, we must emphasize entrepreneurship, economic empowerment, and spending our money in ways that will build an economic base. We want to challenge you to become more conscious of helping our mentees and families in the communities we serve to understand better what

75

is required to build generational wealth. There must be a paradigm shift from being consumers only and/or spending all of the income generated. Undoubtedly, the power to build wealth is possible and can be transformational. Today, the national 100 Black Men organization is considered one of the country’s top AfricanAmerican-led mentorship programs and serves more than 125,000 students in the United States and beyond. “We are proud to be recognized as the nation’s top African American-led mentoring organization. “What They See Is What They’ll Be®” is more than a motto. It is a source of motivation for all members in our 100 Black Men chapter network,” said Mentoring Chair Darian Johnson. Additionally, the motto reminds us that we must consistently commit to personifying the type of people our children will look up to and emulate. We fully embrace our immense responsibility to our mentees and communities. The Sports & Fitness Industry Association surveyed that only 24% of six to 12-year-old kids from households that brought in $35,000 or less per year played sports. In contrast, those from homes with $100,000 salaries saw 40% of children participate in sports. So, it’s clear that lower-income parents are less likely than their higher-income counterparts to involve their children in youth sports because of obstacles such as the rising costs of these extracurricular activities. The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. needs the communities to help grow us as an organization; we must further develop key programmatic initiatives like this YMCA program to give our children more opportunities. This will require more excellent resources and commitment from our membership, with ongoing assistance from our partners, supporters, and friends, because our community needs are significant. 100 Member Dalau Press Releases for me and the professionalism he showed will be missed immensely.

The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. is grateful to members who have been part of the chapter. Last month, we were sad to see WEWS TV 5 News Anchor Dalaun Dillard leave Cleveland and the chapter. His parting words were: “I have some incredibly bittersweet news. My final day with WEWS will be Monday, December 4. This is a personal decision filled with a litany of emotions as I bid farewell to a community that welcomed me with open arms from the moment I arrived. I love this city with my WHOLE heart. I am incredibly grateful for every person in Northeast Ohio who has made my time here unforgettable. Your warmth, kindness, and love have been my daily dose of happiness. Anchoring the 5 pm news has been an honor, and I am thankful for your trust in me to share your stories on some of the best but often the worst days of your life. The connections we’ve formed, the challenges we’ve faced, and the triumphs we’ve celebrated together will always hold a special place in my heart. I’ll be sharing more details about what’s next for me later. Thank you, Cleveland and Northeast Ohio, for adopting me, loving on me, and allowing this to be my home for three years.” Delaun came into the Cleveland Chapter with 21 other fine men in 2022 and has worked on the Communications Committee since becoming a member. “I will miss Dalaun on my committee and would like to express my sincere admiration for the outstanding efforts he did for me and the 100. We appreciate everything he has done over the past year since joining us. The endless hours he spent working to set up interviews and writing

86

We pride ourselves on hard work and dedication to making every critical project successful. Thank you again for all your contributions,” said James W. Wade III - 100 Black Men Communications/ Public Relations Chair. Dalaun is now anchoring in Houston, Texas, and you see him at Fox 26 Houston | Weekdays 7-10 am and noon. Wade has talked to Dalaun a few times since he has been gone; they have a solid relationship, and Wade was his sponsor to enter the 100. This was his statement on Facebook he wanted to share: I am so blessed and thankful in this season of my life. The overwhelming and extraordinary love I’ve received in the past three weeks has filled my cup. God has truly blessed me ‘exceedingly and abundantly.’ Between the heartwarming and, in MANY ways, jerking messages/comments from EVERYBODY in Cleveland (even folks in Omaha and Peoria— cities I’ve previously worked in). To the warm, welcoming messages and remarks from everyone here in Texas. All of it means so much to me, seriously. I’m thankful every day that God has allowed me to use my platform on television to touch other people and hopefully make some impact— and that’s why I got into this business, to begin with. Your messages remind me that God has me right where I’m supposed to be. Thank you all for EVERY comment and message; it’s tough to respond to everybody, but please know I’ve read them— and I’m so full.

2023 - 100 TOY DRIVE

The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland Chapter held their annual Toy Drive on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at the Medusa Restaurant & Lounge at 1437 St Clair Ave NE, Cleveland, OH. Special shout to former 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. Chairman and owner of Medusa Terry Maynard, for letting us have the event there.

“This year, we had an outstanding committee; a difference was the location, too,” said Copeland, Toy Drive Chair. The committee comprised 100 Black Men: Michael Copeland, Gilmore Girls Representative Tiarrah Kent, and volunteer Adrianne Sims.

The evening was full of fun, food, and great music. Dedicated member Michael Copeland has been responsible for the 100’s toy drive for a while. The spirit of holiday cheer encourages us towards generosity, and toy drives are a great way to help kids receive gifts they may not get much at home. Toy drives specifically allow kids to think about the children the skills are for, imagining what toys they might enjoy and helping to build empathy. But even more importantly, they show the child receiving the gift that they are loved and remembered.

NATIONAL PROGRAMS

The Brace B. Godfrey African American History Challenge Sponsored by: The African American History Challenge (AAHC) is the intellectual property of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. The program was started in 1995 under the leadership of the late Brace B. Godfrey, Jr., founding chapter president of 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge, Inc. and a former member of the Board of Directors of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. The AAHC Competition essentially is an educational and scholarship program designed to enhance the study of African American history. It is an education and scholarship program designed to enhance and/or ignite the study of African American history among youth and increase their interest in knowing and better understanding the legacy left for them by our African American ancestors. Yet, the competitive spirit is developed within an experience that will engender mutual respect and admiration among the competitors. The National AAHC Championship Competition will take place at the Annual Conference each year. During the AAHC program, the two (2) students who demonstrated the greatest proficiency were asked to represent their chapters during the National Competition at the Annual Conference. Twenty teams competed in the preliminary rounds to advance towards the Final Competition. These teams were derived of seven (7) Junior Division teams and 13 Senior Division teams. Only the final four (4) Junior and Senior Division teams from the Preliminary Rounds advanced to compete for 3 over $8,000 in scholarships, prizes, and a chance to hold the title, African American History Challenge Competition Champions.
