MESSAGE from THE EDITOR Dear Friends and Supporters, This has been an incredible summer for the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc.—a season filled with impact, growth, and unforgettable moments.

In June, we had the honor of attending the 39th Annual 100 Black Men of America National Conference in New Orleans.

This was a significant event for our chapter and especially for our mentees. We are thrilled to share that some of our young men earned second place in the national STEM Competition, representing Cleveland with excellence, intelligence, and poise on a national stage. These moments of achievement not only reaffirm the value of mentorship but also strengthen our bond as a community.

In July, I had the personal joy of celebrating my birthday.

What a blessing it is to see another year! I’m especially grateful to do so while serving in this impactful work that uplifts our young men and strengthens our community.

What a moment of celebration that I share with all of you, our dedicated supporters. It was a moment of reflection, gratitude, and renewed purpose.

Just a few weeks later, we marked another significant milestone with the 2nd Annual Drive Cleveland Golf Outing at Highland Park Golf Course. This collaborative event, held alongside the Greater Cleveland Association of Black Journalists, brought together professionals, community leaders, and supporters for a day of golf, networking, and celebration. One of the evening’s highlights was a fashion show featuring designer David Ford, whose golf apparel line was modeled by a cast of Cleveland’s celebrity figures. It was a unique fusion of style, culture, and community.

Behind all these signature events is the steady heartbeat of our year-round work—primarily through our Saturday Academy. Held monthly at Tri-C Eastern Campus, this program continues to be a cornerstone of our mission. From leadership development to health and wellness sessions, our Academy provides a safe, empowering space where young men learn to grow, lead, and thrive.

As we look ahead to the rest of 2025, we are inspired by what we’ve accomplished and even more motivated by what’s to come. We want to express our gratitude for your continued support and unwavering belief in our mission. You are the backbone of our work, and we couldn’t do it without you.

WHO WE ARE The 100 Black Men of America, Inc., is not just a leading African-American-led mentoring organization, but a beacon of hope for the African American community. We believe that every African American should have the ability to create the life they’ve always wanted, and that’s what The 100 Black Men of America, Inc. is making possible.

Our commitment is unwavering. We strive to personify the type of people our children will look up to and emulate, embracing our immense responsibility to our mentees and our communities. We provide these children another choice by being around like-minded individuals with similar aspirations and goals, ensuring a brighter future for African American youth.

As The Network of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. has expanded, we have welcomed more companies and developed new programs to better serve our mission. Our focus areas, known as the 100’s Four For The Future, include mentoring, education, health and wellness, and economic empowerment. These areas guide our efforts to provide the education and empowerment necessary to transform the lives of the children we serve.

Through the expansion, we’ve created 100 Black Men Chapters that deliver unique programs that address specific needs in local communities.

Through 57 years of testing, we’ve created the 100’s successful model—a proven blueprint for mentoring and developing young people into future leaders by surrounding them with a positive network and giving them the opportunity that they may not have thought was possible.

Letter from the Chairman The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland believe in the power of generational wisdom, unity, and leadership. But in today’s fast pace world, each generation faces its own set of struggles and sometimes, misunderstandings arise between age groups. Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z all deal with different realities and challenges, while sharing a common goal. We all want the opportunity for a better life and the best for our community.

In our work with Black youth and families, we know that every generation matters. We all bring something valuable to the table and we’re at our best when we sit at that table together. We don’t have to agree on everything but we must have an open dialogue.

That’s one of the ways understanding grows.

Older generations may sometimes struggle with new ideas and concepts, have a tendency to over-mentor without listening, and feel their message is on the verge of being outdated. But their wisdom developed over the years is invaluable. Experience is still the best teacher.

What if we were to try something different and move beyond one-way mentorship. Instead, foster mutual mentorship where those of us with some life experience share wisdom, and young people teach tech, trends, and share their modern challenges.

So what role can you play? Reach out to a younger brother and offer your guidance.. Ask an elder to share a story or his experiences. Volunteer for a mentoring event. Share your skills and explore new ones.

Too often, generational frustration within the Black community leads us to critique and criticize one another instead of collaborating. But our ancestors survived by sticking together, so let’s honor them not by staying in our lane, but by building a whole new road together.

Remember our rich history and know that when Black men of all ages unite, positive change happens.

The History of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. The history of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland is rooted in a pivotal moment when Michael Nelson, a visionary leader, decided to convene a historic meeting. This gathering brought together individuals who represented powerful political factions, including Congressman Louis Stokes, former City Council President George Forbes, and the man who defeated George for Mayor, Michael R. White. The location of this momentous meeting was kept a secret until the day of the event, adding to its intrigue and significance.

A date was set, and Nelson invited a number of his friends, including Larry Hines, Gregory Clifford, Curtis Griggs, Tony Smith, Luther Towers, and Julius Singleton, along with Stokes’ rep, Ron Adrine, Forbes’ rep, Daryl Fields, and White rep, Nate Gray to meet with Chairman Dortch and Roosevelt Adams.

The meeting was held at the now-closed Eloise’s Restaurant on East 79th and Carnegie. The National Headquarters approved Cleveland to be established in 1997 and recognized as an entire fledge chapter.

These guys were familiar with the 100 through business, political, or family connections.

After listening to the very impressive Thomas Dortch and about an hour or so of discussion, the decision was made to incorporate formally, set a dues structure of $250 annually, and begin recruiting members. So in 1997, The 100 Black Men in Cleveland was established.

The first significant event was a rollout at the Cleveland Clinic, where over 90 men made a commitment to join the cause, with about 70 of them paying their dues. Mayor Michael R. White, a staunch supporter, pledged to buy 100 copies of the renowned motivational speaker George Frazer’s book, ‘Success Runs in

Our Race ‘, for each member. George Frazer, who graced the opening event with his presence, generously autographed each member’s copy, symbolizing the dedication and support of the early members.

The next major event was a fundraising gala featuring the late Phylis Hyman, a nationally known recording artist. The event was orchestrated by the dynamic Richard Johnson, a significant internet influencer in today’s social media world. Held at the prestigious Marriott Hotel in Cleveland, the gala was not just a success, but a resounding triumph, underscoring the impact of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland in the community.

The funds raised by that first gala supported the Cleveland chapter’s version of the National 100’s Four For The Future programs of Health/Wellness, economic development, Education, and Mentoring. Larry Hines was our first Program Director, assisted by Curtis (Griggs). The parentheses are intentional; that’s how Curtis spelled his last name.

The 100 would continue to grow its brand in Cleveland. The group coordinated mentoring programs in numerous schools, including Daniel E. Morgan Elementary School, Cleveland East Senior High School, John F. Kennedy Senior High School, East Cleveland Shaw Senior High School, Mound, and Warrensville Heights Senior High School. The 100 also held a Saturday morning mentoring program at its offices in Cleveland’s Shaker Square complex. The numerous programs included a reading program at Daniel E Morgan and a stock market competition at East High School. One of the highlights of our plan was the success of our East High Stock Market Challenge team, which traveled to Atlanta and took on some of the nation’s most prominent schools, finishing a highly respectable 3rd out of the scores of schools that competed.

In 2022, a class of 22 new members came in, and in 2023, the chapter is still thriving, celebrating twenty-five years; after seven chairpersons and numerous galas, the chapter you can still find the men mentoring in such schools as Wade Park and Kenneth Clement Boys Leadership Academy, to name a few.

2024 Under new Leadership Gregory Lockhart as the Chairman & James W. Wade III serving as Vice Chairman, the 100 re-instated the Saturday Academy at Cuyahoga Community College, Eastern Campus.

Various new programs and activities were also added.

Cleveland Shines at the 39th Annual 100 Black Men of America, Inc. Conference

2025 STEM Competition Second Place Winners from The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc.

In June, the city of New Orleans hosted a powerful gathering of mentors, mentees, and leaders from across the nation for the 39th Annual Conference of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. This annual event remains one of the most impactful gatherings dedicated to mentorship, leadership, economic empowerment, health and wellness, and education within the Black community. For the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc., it was not only a time to learn, network, and grow—it was a time to shine, and a moment that filled our community with immense pride and inspiration.

From the very beginning of the conference, Cleveland made its presence known. During the opening ceremony, one of our very own mentees, DeShawn Hester, was honored with a 20 | Real Men Magazine

key role in the ceremonial candle lighting ritual.

This tradition is one of the most sacred parts of the conference, symbolizing unity, hope, and the collective light we pass on to our youth.

DeShawn’s confident presence before the national audience and his powerful message were a proud moment for all who have walked alongside him throughout his journey in the Saturday Academy and beyond.

But DeShawn wasn’t the only mentee to make waves. Alongside him was fellow Cleveland mentee Byron Harris, and together, the two were featured speakers at the Youth Breakfast, one of the conference’s most well-attended youth-focused events. Before a room filled with youth delegates, mentors, and corporate leaders, Byron and DeShawn shared speeches

that were uplifting to the audience. Their journey and growth are a testament to the potential and power of our youth, filling us with hope and optimism for the future.

Their speeches, filled with heartfelt authenticity, deeply inspired the audience, who responded with a standing ovation. This powerful reaction is a testament to the potential of our youth when given the stage and the support to grow.

Their words not only inspired hope but also instilled a sense of optimism for the future, reminding us of the incredible potential within our community.

The conference itself was packed with enriching workshops, dynamic keynote speakers, and a renewed focus on preparing leaders to impact a changing world. Topics ranged from financial literacy and entrepreneurship to mental health, civic engagement, and college readiness.

Cleveland mentees and mentors participated fully, engaging in sessions, networking with peers from other chapters, and soaking up the knowledge and energy in every room.

Another highlight was the STEM competition, where our mentee secured the second position nationally, showcasing the strength of our educational programming and the talent rising in our local community. This achievement was more than just a trophy—it was a reminder of what’s possible when mentorship, dedication, and opportunity come together.

For the mentors who attended from the Greater Cleveland chapter, the conference served as both a significant professional development opportunity and a personal recharge.

Witnessing our young men grow, take initiative, and lead with confidence reinforced why our mission matters now more than ever, and also provided a valuable learning experience for our mentors.

Chairman Gregory Lockhart, who also attended the conference, reflected: “Watching our mentees take center stage and represent Cleveland at the highest level reminded me why we do this work. These young men are

our future, and they’re already leading with strength, character, and purpose.”

As we reflect on this extraordinary experience, we celebrate the achievements of DeShawn, Byron, and all the mentees who accompanied us. Their representation of Cleveland was not only commendable but also exceptional. The cultural experiences in New Orleans, from the local food to the historic sites, not only enriched our trip but also strengthened the bonds of brotherhood and community among our mentors and mentees.

As we reflect on this extraordinary experience, we celebrate the exceptional achievements of DeShawn, Byron, and all the mentees who accompanied us. Their representation of Cleveland was not only commendable but also exceptional, standing out among the many talented individuals at the conference.

to our own Chairman, who was honored with the prestigious Chairman’s Award at the 39th Annual Conference of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. This Chairman’s recognition speaks volumes about LaRese’s dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the mission of the 100.

This is ThisLaRese’s second consecutive year that the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. has brought home a National Award. This remarkable achievement reflects the strength and excellence of our chapter. Last year, I was humbled to be the recipient of this same award.

I couldn’t be more proud to see my brother and fellow board member receive this honor in 2025. He currently serves as the National Treasurer of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc., a role he has executed with integrity, vision, and a deep sense of responsibility. His financial expertise and passion for service have helped guide the national organization toward longterm sustainability and impact.

Both LaRese and I are honored to serve on the National Board, representing Cleveland and continuing the legacy of leadership for which our chapter is known. It is not just about titles— it is about the work we do behind the scenes, the time we invest in our mentees, and the commitment we show to empowering the next generation.

LaRese’s award is a win for all of us. It reinforces that when you lead with purpose and consistency, others take notice. Congratulations again, LaRese. Your example reminds us all what it looks like to serve with excellence.

The 39th Annual Conference wasn’t just about leadership and learning—it was also filled with unforgettable entertainment. Attendees were treated to outstanding performances by Pokey Bear, known for his hit song “My Side Piece,” the electrifying Orchestra Noir, and the legendary Doug E. Fresh, who had the crowd on their feet.

Friday night’s traditional Black Tie Gala embraced the vibrant spirit of New Orleans with a Mardi Gras theme, complete with a live band that kept the celebration going.

On Saturday night, the energy shifted for the “Boots on the Ground” party, where everyone came dressed in cowboy boots and hats, creating a fun, laid-back Southern vibe to close out the weekend. From powerful panels to soulful sounds, the 39th Annual Conference truly had it all.

The 39th Annual Conference of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. was a powerful reminder that when we invest in our young people, we’re building more than resumes—we’re creating leaders. And thanks to their courage and voiced brilliance, the future looks very bright.

Cleveland showed up—and Cleveland showed out.

“Well Connected Wednesday: A Health and Wellness Initiative Making a Difference” On June 25, 2025, the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc., officially launched its new health and wellness initiative, Well Connected Wednesday, in partnership with the Warrensville Heights YMCA. The energy in the building was palpable as members, mentees, and community supporters gathered, creating a powerful sense of community and togetherness.

This shared commitment to our health binds us together in a powerful movement.

Well Connected Wednesday, held one Wednesday of every month from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the Warrensville Heights YMCA, is not just a workout session. It’s a unique bonding experience, a commitment to self-care, and a call to action for all who attend. Whether you’re a mentee striving to build better habits, a mentor leading by example, or a community partner offering support, everyone leaves the session enriched and empowered.

This initiative didn’t start by accident. It was intentionally created to align with one of the organization’s Four For the Future pillars: Health & Wellness. These pillars, which also include Education, Economic Empowerment, and Leadership Development, serve as the guiding principles of our organization. The goal was simple yet powerful—create a consistent space where the men and boys in the organization could stay accountable, active, and educated about their physical and mental well-being.

From the very first session, the turnout was encouraging. Young men from the Saturday Academy arrived eager to sweat and learn, accompanied by mentors who stood by their sides not just in words but in action. Seeing a line of mentees running laps alongside seasoned members reminded everyone that mentorship isn’t confined to classrooms or boardrooms—it can happen on a treadmill, during a game of basketball, or while stretching after a workout.

The sessions are designed to be inclusive and varied, offering a range of activities that include strength training, cardio, flexibility, and sports.

The YMCA staff, alongside guest instructors and health professionals, provide guidance and instruction, ensuring everyone is engaged and excited about their health journey. There’s something for everyone, and the variety keeps things fresh and interesting.

For many of the mentees, Well Connected Wednesday is their first exposure to a regular fitness routine, and for some, their first time in a gym. This program is making a difference. It introduces young men to the discipline of health while surrounding them with positive Black male role models who value taking care of their bodies and minds. The impact is tangible— some mentees have started setting personal goals, tracking their progress, and even encouraging their friends to join in.

From a mentor’s perspective, Well Connected Wednesday is a win on multiple levels. It fosters relationships, promotes accountability, and reinforces the notion that we must prioritize self-care to be effective leaders and changemakers. It provides members with another meaningful way to connect with their mentees and demonstrates the power of consistency.

Moreover, mentors are the backbone of this program, and their dedication and support are integral to its success. They have reported benefits, including improved physical health, increased mental resilience, and enhanced leadership skills, as a result of the program.

The name Well Connected Wednesday itself is symbolic. It reflects the core idea of connecting with your health, connecting with your brothers, and connecting with your purpose. It’s more than an event—it’s becoming a movement.

Health and wellness are essential parts of our daily lives—yet too often, they’re overlooked

until a crisis forces us to pay attention. Taking care of your health isn’t just about avoiding illness; it’s about living a full, energized, and purpose-driven life.

Your body is your most valuable asset.

Whether you’re working, going to school, mentoring a young person, or caring for family, everything begins with how you feel physically and mentally. Poor health can limit your opportunities, drain your energy, and prevent you from living life to its fullest. On the other hand, when you prioritize your health through exercise, proper nutrition, rest, and regular check-ups, you build the strength and resilience needed to handle life’s challenges.

For the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc., health and wellness are one of our core pillars. Strong leaders must take care of themselves to lead and serve others effectively.

That’s why programs like Well Connected Wednesday at the Warrensville Heights YMCA were created—to provide our members, mentees, and the community a consistent space to focus on health.

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being intentional. Small changes—such as drinking more water, walking daily, getting enough sleep, or managing stress—can make a significant difference over time. Your health is your foundation. Without it, everything else becomes harder to maintain.

As the summer continues, we anticipate a significant growth in attendance. The word is spreading, and more parents are encouraging their sons to attend. More mentors are adjusting their schedules to make it a priority. And more partnerships are forming to bring additional resources to the program. In the future, we aim to expand the program to other days of the week and introduce more specialized health and wellness activities, giving us hope for a brighter, healthier future.

At the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, mentoring has always been the cornerstone of our organization. With Well Connected Wednesday, health is now a significant part of that foundation as well. Because we believe that strong minds and strong bodies go hand in hand when building the leaders of tomorrow.

A Celebration of Unity, Style, and Purpose at the 2nd Annual Drive Cleveland Golf Outing Hosted by 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. & Greater Cleveland Association of Black Journalists On Sunday, August 3, 2025, the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. and the Greater Cleveland Association of Black Journalists united to host the highly anticipated 2nd Annual Drive Cleveland Golf Outing at the historic Highland Park Golf Course. What unfolded was more than just a day on the green—it was a celebration of community, collaboration, and culture, a testament to the power of unity in our shared mission.

The event welcomed an enthusiastic crowd of golfers—men and women from across Greater Cleveland—who arrived early and were greeted with snacks, refreshments, and warm smiles. As the sun rose over Highland Park, the weather proved to be nothing short of perfect, setting the stage for a memorable day of fellowship, friendly competition, and civic engagement.

From the first tee to the final hole, laughter and camaraderie echoed across the course. For many, this event served as both a reunion and an opportunity to network with like-minded professionals and leaders who share a passion for giving back. While scores were kept, the true victory of the day was found in the connections made and the causes supported.

As the golf portion of the event wrapped up, attendees transitioned into the evening’s program—a beautifully prepared dinner reception that blended elegance with heartfelt appreciation. The dining area buzzed with conversation as guests recounted their rounds and looked forward to the program ahead.

by 100 Black Men Chairman Greg Lockhart and Rhonda Crowder, a respected voice in local journalism and a key leader with the Greater Cleveland Association of Black Journalists. Their words of thanks and acknowledgment underscored the spirit of gratitude and unity that defined the day.

But the evening was far from over. A signature highlight of the reception was the stunning golf fashion showcase, curated by none other

than acclaimed designer David Ford. Known for his sleek, high-quality eyewear and upscale golf apparel, Ford delivered a showcase that seamlessly merged style with sophistication.

His designs weren’t just garments—they were statements, and they came to life thanks to a star-studded lineup of local celebrity models.

The runway came alive with appearances by Leon Bibb (WKYC 3), a legendary broadcaster whose grace and presence continue to inspire; Kenny Crumpton (Fox 8), whose charismatic energy brought the crowd to life; and Tiffany Tarpley and Remi Murrey (WEWS 5), whose confidence and style lit up the room. The audience was equally captivated by Shannon Smith (WOIO), Dontae Jones (Fox 8), DJ Krisstyles (WOVU), and beloved community figures Richard and April Scott, as well as other notable guests.

Each model brought their flair and authenticity to the runway, giving attendees an unforgettable experience that was both fun

and fashionable. The fashion show served as a potent reminder that professional excellence and cultural expression go hand in hand.

Beyond the aesthetics, the event’s deeper purpose stood tall. The Drive Cleveland Golf Outing is a joint fundraiser, and the funds raised will go directly toward supporting the missions of both hosting organizations, making a significant impact on our community and inspiring us all to contribute to a brighter future.

For the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc., these funds help sustain and expand vital programming—especially the Saturday Academy, which serves young men between the ages of 12–18 with mentorship, leadership training, education support, and life skills. With each dollar raised, the chapter moves closer to its vision of changing the narrative for Black youth in Cleveland.

For the Greater Cleveland Association of Black Journalists, the event helps fund initiatives that ensure diversity, equity, and representation in media. The GCABJ continues to mentor young journalists, advocate for balanced storytelling, and provide a platform for underrepresented voices.

Together, the two organizations demonstrated what’s possible when community, creativity, and commitment come together in harmony.

The 2nd Annual Drive Cleveland Golf Outing was more than just an event—it was a statement. A statement that Black excellence in Cleveland is not just thriving, but it’s a force to be reckoned with. A statement that mentorship, journalism, and community leadership are not just alive and well, but they’re thriving. And above all, a statement that when we come together, we rise together, proud of our achievements and empowered for the future.

As the sun set on Highland Park and guests departed with full hearts and unforgettable memories, the legacy of the outing was evident: we’re driving more than golf balls—we’re driving change.

First Tee Experience: Introducing Young Men to New Spaces and Life Lessons In July, the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. continued its commitment to mentoring and exposure by partnering once again with First Tee. This youth development organization uses Golf as a platform to teach life skills, leadership, and confidence. This special session was part of the organization’s ongoing Saturday Academy, and it provided a unique and powerful experience for young men ages 12 to 18 who are enrolled in the program.

Held at a local Cleveland-area golf course, the session welcomed mentees, mentors, and volunteers on a warm, sunny afternoon.

For many of the young men in attendance, it was their very first time setting foot on a golf course—an environment that, traditionally, many of them had only seen from afar or on TV. The goal of the session was not just to teach the game of Golf, but to open new doors and challenge perceptions about where young Black boys and men belong.

From the moment they arrived, the youth were greeted with encouragement and structure.

Coaches from the First Tee program introduced the basics of the sport—grip, stance, swing mechanics—but also spent time reinforcing critical life skills such as honesty, patience, perseverance, and respect. The golf course became a classroom without walls, where lessons extended far beyond the green.

One mentor remarked, “Golf teaches you how to recover after a bad shot—and that’s life.

You don’t always hit it perfectly, but you stay focused and keep going. That’s what we’re teaching today.”

The boys were fully engaged. Some approached the game with curiosity, others with hesitation, but by the end of the session, nearly all of

them were smiling and swinging with growing confidence. Small victories—like sinking a putt or driving the ball straight—became significant accomplishments celebrated by peers and mentors alike, instilling a sense of pride and inspiration in the entire community.

In addition to learning golf fundamentals, the young men were encouraged to reflect on how this experience connects to their personal growth. They discussed how Golf requires calm focus, thoughtful planning, and the ability to bounce back—all of which are tools that can help them navigate school, relationships, and life’s challenges. This transformative power of the experience leaves us hopeful about the future of these young men.

The First Tee coaches and volunteers were instrumental in making the day a success. Their presence and patience offered a refreshing contrast to many of the pressures these young men face daily. Their message was clear: you belong here, and you are capable of mastering any space you step into. We are grateful and appreciative of their impactful role in this event.

The outing also highlighted the value of exposure and access. For many inner-city youth, opportunities to explore new environments like golf courses are limited. By intentionally bringing them into these spaces, the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. continues to expand their worldview—helping them to imagine new possibilities for their futures.

One parent later shared, “My son came home talking about Golf—something I never thought I’d hear. He felt good about himself, and that’s what matters.”

As part of its Four for the Future pillars— Mentoring, Education, Health & Wellness, and Economic Empowerment—this event hit all the right notes. Golf provided a healthy physical activity, but also nurtured mental focus, interpersonal skills, and positive self-esteem.

The day closed with a brief group reflection and lots of high-fives. For the young men who participated, it was more than a recreational Summer 2025 Issue | 45

activity—it was a lesson in confidence, a reminder of their value, and a step into spaces that are often underrepresented by people who look like them.

By Jayson Nichols Cleveland Ohio- The beginning of a new journey always is interesting. For Shedeur Sanders, the beginning of his NFL career has been nothing short of... interesting. We won’t focus on Sanders having to wait three days for his name to be called. We won’t talk about him having to endure the prank call from the Atlanta Defensive Coordinator’s son. We wont focus on the team that drafted him, the Cleveland Browns, taking a Quarterback in the third round.

Let’s put all that aside.

Sanders was labeled as spoiled. Entitled. A brat. It was said that he was self-centered. But what is interesting is that Sanders, in his time

in Cleveland, has done something for the community that dispels all of the labels. First, he surprised kids at John Marshall High School.

Not only did he spend time talking to the kids, explaining that he wants to win a Super Bowl for the Browns, he then held an impromptu training session with the kids. All unsolicited.

All unprompted.

Next up, Sanders went to Berea-Midpark.

Sanders went and spent time with the football team and took photos.

Sanders has made several appearances and pop-ups. But none may be more important than the latest one.

On June 23rd, the residents of Cleveland’s Rainbow Terrace in Garden Valley endured a fire that displaced 40 families. In an area that is known not to be brimming with hope, this was devastating. The community raised money, and there were countless organizations that donated time and resources. However, Sanders did even more.

On Wednesday July 16th, Sanders went out to Garden Valley and held an event that brought hope to the families. It was an old school block party. Music, food, fun. In one evening, Sanders did more than just write a check. He did more than just make an appearance. That would have been absolutely fine. He provided hope. He provided a beacon of light. For one evening, the Garden Valley community got to spend time with Shedeur Sanders. Sanders spent over four hours with the community. There was

music from an 11-year-old DJ. There were free haircuts. There was line dancing. The grills were out. There were complementary T-shirts. But most of all, there was Shedeur Sanders.

Sanders played cornhole. He quarterbacked a pickup football game. He was present. In a time when a community needed some hope, Sanders brought that. Speaking with Anscape’s Branson Wright, Sanders said, “I feel a love in the community. I’m enjoying it. I just wanted to come out and enjoy myself with everybody. I feel like Cleveland is home; its normal to me.”

So, I know what the commentators, and some “anonymous” scouts and front office people say. We all have seen those stories. But since becoming a Cleveland Brown, Sanders has been nothing short of team oriented, and community driven. He has said the right things in his media availability. He embraced the community.

And he has shown up in ways that few other players, let alone rookies have. Garden Valley has never had a professional athlete come and publicly spend time there. What will be forever remembered as the Garden Valley Fun Fest will always hold a place in the heart of the community as they were able to spend time with Shedeur Sanders.

Even with the uncertainty of when Sanders will play. With all the scrutiny and media attention just because of who he is, and who his father is.

Sanders has come into Cleveland and shown up in so many ways. If he never plays a snap for the Browns, he’s already becoming legendary. But if he is ANY good. And the Browns put him out there and he performs and becomes the starting quarterback…. This entire rookie offseason has been the start of Shedeur becoming just like his brand. Legendary.

July Saturday Academy Recap – A Day of Fitness, Brotherhood, and Growth On a warm summer morning at Cuyahoga Community College Eastern Campus, the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. hosted its July Saturday Academy—this time with a strong emphasis on health and wellness, one of the organization’s core “Four for the Future” pillars. With a palpable sense of community in the air and a shared purpose in every step, our young men, mentors, volunteers, and partners came together, ready to move, learn, and grow.

This month’s session focused on physical fitness as a path to overall well-being, confidence, and mental clarity. We were honored to welcome Anthony Franklin, Cuyahoga Community College’s Athletic Director, as our special guest instructor.

With a commanding presence and a passion for youth development, Mr. Franklin led our mentees through a dynamic series of exercises designed to challenge their bodies and minds.

skills; for others, it was simply a chance to connect and be kids in a safe, structured environment.

But beyond the physical activity, the Saturday Academy remained true to its mission— empowering young men through mentorship.

The day included robust group discussions where mentors shared insights about manhood, responsibility, and leadership. These discussions sparked introspection and growth in the young men, reinforcing the idea that true strength is measured not just by physical power, but by character, integrity, and how you treat others.

As always, our dedicated mentors were fully present—coaching, encouraging, and leading by example. Whether helping with stretches, joining in the drills, or simply listening during conversations, they modeled the kind of leadership we aim to pass on to the next generation.

The class was split into two rotating groups to ensure everyone had an opportunity to experience both indoor and outdoor activities. While one group took to the track and open air for strength and conditioning drills, the other group stayed indoors for cardio-based movement and agility work. After 20 minutes, the groups switched places—keeping the energy high and the young men engaged.

The July Saturday Academy was more than a workout—it was a celebration of growth, resilience, and the power of brotherhood. By the end of the morning, the young men left not only physically stronger but also more connected to themselves, their mentors, and their purpose. Their growth and transformation are a testament to the impact of our collective efforts.

Throughout the session, Mr. Franklin not only led the workouts but also instilled essential lessons about discipline, consistency, and taking care of your body. He emphasized that fitness isn’t just about sports—it’s about showing up in life with energy, confidence, and control.

We extend our deepest thanks to Anthony Franklin, our volunteers, partners, and the families who continue to support this vital initiative.

Your unwavering support and commitment are the driving force behind the success of the Saturday Academy. The July session was yet another powerful example of what happens when community, commitment, and care come together, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

And of course, no fitness day would be complete without a bit of fun. Once the formal training wrapped up, the young men were invited to play basketball, something many had eagerly anticipated. Laughter echoed through the gym as they hit the courts, bonding over the game and cheering each other on. For some, it was a moment to show off their 54 | Real Men Magazine

Gentle Bites of Spring: Nourish Your Soul Without Breaking the Bank

This vibrant spring mix salad is a fresh and healthy option. It features a blend of baby spring mix greens, edible flowers, cherry tomatoes, avocado, cucumber, beets, artichoke hearts, red onion, and olives, all topped with a homemade dressing.

The ingredients include a 10-ounce package of spring mix, halved cherry or grape tomatoes, a medium avocado sliced, a medium cucumber sliced, half a cup of sliced beets, a handful of basil and cilantro, roughly chopped artichoke hearts, sliced red onion, and black olives. For the dressing, you'll need a cup of soaked cashews, 1¼ cups of water, two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice, two tablespoons of tahini paste, one tablespoon of nutritional yeast flakes, a clove of garlic, and half a teaspoon of salt.

Soak the cashews for about an hour or overnight using a standard blender; a highspeed blender does not require soaking.
