The Board Development Committee is commissioned by the chair of the advisory board. This committee is charged with evaluating board member effectiveness, managing the process of recruiting and retaining new board members, and succession planning.

Composition
Committee members are appointed by the chair of the board and will serve a two-year renewable term beginning in January. This committee will meet throughout the year on a regularly scheduled basis. Committee members will be selected from the current board as well as the YMCA’s membership or surrounding community if necessary.
Responsibilities
1. Use a board assessment process/tool to identify the strengths and weaknesses of board members based upon the Association’s strategic plan, the needs of the Atlee Station Family YMCA, and the surrounding community.
2. Based upon the assessment, develop an annual plan for board member education and training.
3. Understand the board recruitment process is a year round function that includes developing board leadership and managing the nominating process to identify future board members.
4. In managing this process, they will utilize the board to assist with identifying potential board members. The committee will prioritize the cultivation and recruitment of prospective members based on assessments and need. A list of final candidates will be brought to the full board for approval.
5. Provide a board orientation program for all new board members.
6. Review the board member expectation list each year and revise where appropriate. All proposed changes will be brought before the board for approval.
7. Monitor board member participation in Y events, community events, campaign events, and attendance to board meetings, committee meetings, and task force meetings. Address board members that are not meeting expectations with the advisory board chair and the executive director.
8. Assist the chair with recommendations of potential committee and task for chairs and members based on the overall recruitment plan for new board members.
9. Work in close contact with the chair and executive director on all areas of board development.
10.Facilitate a board self-assessment as needed.
